This is really good to hear the raw sounds without effects so people can actually hear how simple most sounds are hopefully giving them a bit of inspiration to build sounds from scratch, just like when you see the actual ingredients in a recipe and realise it’s not as complex
This video shows how important good effects especially reverb is for the CS80 sounds we know from these classic songs. On the other hand it's interesting to hear the CS80 dry without reverb.
Thanks for your feedback - i am not trying to sell the CS80 - I am showing you what it is really like - however - you check any digital synth & take off the fx & eq!!
Excellent video! And well played! In regards to added effects, I understand that the patches may have originally been played with lots of reverb and delay but personally I like hearing them here in their dry form. Well done!
@AndyWhitmore Very nice. I recall in a review of the CS80 the actual sound isn't anything special but when you add the real time play controls with say a lexicon reverb unit or Roland space echo the synth truly comes into its own.

Yes, I'm used to hearing these riffs drenched in reverb, but they still sound rich and alive and organic coming directly from the CS-80s line out. Just try that with any VST or modern clone.
Yes - the raw power of this synth - out of the box - is amazing - not bad for 1977 - & the vst sound the same - but don't feel the same - the beauty of analog synths is they add a thickness to the mix that digital synths can not achieve
I like listening to synth sounds like this. Raw, without any FX or post processing. It really helps to see how every synth it's good on it's own. I mean, yes you can hear it's a CS-80 and it's great. But there are lots of synths that can replicate sounds made with different synthesizers, by using the right effect and mixing technique. Really helps keeping the GAS under control.
@AndyWhitmore yeah I saw that video too! Great playing, by the way. The CS-80 is still an iconic synth with good capabilities. And it really looks elegant to me. I'd give anything for a synth that looks anything like it. I would even love a midi controller with the same layout as a CS-80

Reverb is what air is for etheric oils and without sniffing on the bottle itself : this micro-drop scents needs to be spread out into space and combined with the air itself. Only in this way it gives literally oxygene to that scents which than can travels through the rooms. For me reverb is not an effect but something that is crusial embedded into and for every sound(design) itself as a sonic sculpture. Any sculpture needs a space to be put in and to reveal itself... This fact is also true for sonic sculptures. In reality, "dry sounds" don't exist, except in the world of sounddesign-synthesizer machines. For any performance it would be better to give it that... oxygene... Just a thought. But hey : don't get me wrong : very well reverse engineered re-sound-designed (on the level of the dry sound)! Awesome!
I only wish I had a chance to play one of these myself, when you weigh how apparently blissful it was to play in the late 70s when it first arrived, how many hit records it has been used on and the part in which its appeal is so endearing that Stevie Wonder was still playing one of his eight years after it was introduced in 1977 *(In Square Circle)* against how rare it has become since then and how cumbersome it was to maintain even when it was still being manufactured. Hello hello.. super addictive video.. just to comment on one detail.. the CS80 was not used by ELO on their LP TIME.. almost all the synth sounds on LP TIME (from 1981) are based on Oberheim, not on the Yamaha CS 80.. the intro Prologue, the main riff of Twilight etc etc, everything is Oberheim, not CS 80. the ELO LP in which almost all the synth sounds are from the CS80 is the 1979 LP Discovery.. if you listen to this LP, you will surely be able to hear and recreate any synth part or riff from that LP with a CS80 but not with the LP TIME, for TIME, ELO had already left the CS80 behind and had given itself over completely to Oberheim, Oberheim being, as I say, the almost main source of all the synth sounds on the LP time.. Of course it is certain that you can recreate parts of the Time LP with any other synth than the one the ELO originally used (Oberheim), even if it sounds similar but not the same, but the ELO did not use the CS 80 either in the recording of the Time LP or for the subsequent tour (Time Tour 1981/82) As I said, the ELO used the CS 80 intensively on the Discovery LP in 1979, and live, the year before, in the final part of the tour of the previous LP (Out Of The Blue in 1977), the Out Of The Blue Tour in 1978. Some CS80 can also be heard on the ELO tracks from the 1980 LP Xanadu I would like nothing more than to hear your recreations with CS 80 of ELO songs from the Discovery LP.. Greetings from Spain..
That's a lot to take in - I have saved your message to my job list so I can further research this - however - I did a fair amount of research before deciding that ELO had used the CS80 on Time - but I will check your feedback & come back with a follow up video - thanks for taking the time to educate me!
@@AndyWhitmore Hello, hello.. Thanks for your comment, my friend.. I understand that preparing and making this video involves a huge amount of work, and I congratulate you for all of it.. I just wanted to tell you that I'm a die hard fan of the ELO world and its relatives for 44 years.. Here in Spain, I'm the biggest collector of the group.. I'm a historian of the group and a great connoisseur of the entire ELO world.. I frequently write about ELO and its relatives on websites specializing in ELO.. In the ELO world I'm known as heavyheadrecords If you can research the 1979 Discovery LP, you'll discover that it was on that LP that the CS80 was the main synthesizer.. You can see video clips from the Discovery LP, (obviously in playback, not live) in which our beloved and recently deceased Richard Tandy appears with the CS80.. Here you can see Tandy with the CS80 in the video clip of the song Confusion from the LP Discovery: ruclips.net/video/1jUvhJ_Tgzw/видео.html In all the other music videos on the LP Discovery, you can also see Tandy with his CS80.. You can see them here: ruclips.net/video/GJuTIxwQw0k/видео.html Tandy used other synths since the beginning of the group in the early 70's, such as of course the legendary mini moog, various ARPs (2600, Odissey, Quadra, etc.), various other Moogs (polimoog, memory moog, etc..) and from the 80's, specifically from 1981 with the LP Time, is when Oberheim became the main synth both in the studio and live.. On the LP Time (from 1981) Oberheim is practically all the synths that sound on that recording. Tandy had already left aside ARPs, Moogs, Yamahas etc, to use more modern synths at that time such as Oberheim, Sequential Circuits, Korg, Roland etc.. although he still used some Moogs in small details and little else. As I say, if you have the chance, listen to the Discovery LP or look for videos of this Discovery, and there you will be able to hear the legendary CS80 in great detail.. Greetings from Spain
I can see where you're coming from! Many modern synths offer great sounds at a lower price point, but the CS-80 has that unique character that’s hard to replicate.
Also stevie wonder plays on his albums but not on songs in the keys of life he had gx1 dream machine large polyphonic synthesizer with three keys like a organ then he had cs80 late 70s through journey secrets of plants and 1980s hotter than July Jermaine jackson let's get serious
Funny you should say that but you are right. I remember back in the late 70s Stevie Wonder used a synth that was "unavailable" to us mere mortals - which I later found out to be the legendary Yamaha GX1! Well spotted - & yes - Wonder used the CS80 for about 8 years after purchasing it shortly after completing "Songs in the Key of Life"

CS-80 no SAGA?? Missed opportunity. About 10 Vangelis no SAGA
Well Sorrry!! no offense - but I'd never heard of SAGA - having said that - I have done some research & can see that ames Gerrard Gilmour is a talented player & well worth a tribute! Look out for Saga in my next CS80 video - thanks for watching!
@@AndyWhitmore Just kidding. Hard to do that on text. Love that cs80.
I discovered the cs-80 with Saga. Listen to “Dont be Late” by Saga
@@pedrosura what an awesome band - adding to my playlist
For such a sought after synth this video isn't selling it for me.Too heavy, lack of memory banks, too temperemental. I got a Korg Modwave recently that blows it out of the water.
OK - well b4 you write it off - check this video - the same synth with fx - which TBH is on all new synths - ruclips.net/video/uhGZS1OO0uk/видео.html
Hello hello..
super addictive video..
just to comment on one detail..
the CS80 was not used by ELO on their LP TIME..
almost all the synth sounds on LP TIME (from 1981) are based on Oberheim, not on the Yamaha CS 80..
the intro Prologue, the main riff of Twilight etc etc, everything is Oberheim, not CS 80.
the ELO LP in which almost all the synth sounds are from the CS80 is the 1979 LP Discovery..
if you listen to this LP, you will surely be able to hear and recreate any synth part or riff from that LP with a CS80
but not with the LP TIME,
for TIME, ELO had already left the CS80 behind and had given itself over completely to Oberheim, Oberheim being, as I say, the almost main source of all the synth sounds on the LP time..
Of course it is certain that you can recreate parts of the Time LP with any other synth than the one the ELO originally used (Oberheim), even if it sounds similar but not the same, but the ELO did not use the CS 80 either in the recording of the Time LP or for the subsequent tour (Time Tour 1981/82)
As I said, the ELO used the CS 80 intensively on the Discovery LP in 1979, and live, the year before, in the final part of the tour of the previous LP (Out Of The Blue in 1977), the Out Of The Blue Tour in 1978.
Some CS80 can also be heard on the ELO tracks from the 1980 LP Xanadu
I would like nothing more than to hear your recreations with CS 80 of ELO songs from the Discovery LP..
Greetings from Spain..
That's a lot to take in - I have saved your message to my job list so I can further research this - however - I did a fair amount of research before deciding that ELO had used the CS80 on Time - but I will check your feedback & come back with a follow up video - thanks for taking the time to educate me!

Hello, hello..
In the ELO world I'm known as heavyheadrecords
If you can research the 1979 Discovery LP, you'll discover that it was on that LP that the CS80 was the main synthesizer..
You can see video clips from the Discovery LP, (obviously in playback, not live) in which our beloved and recently deceased Richard Tandy appears with the CS80..
Here you can see Tandy with the CS80 in the video clip of the song Confusion from the LP Discovery:
ruclips.net/video/1jUvhJ_Tgzw/видео.html
In all the other music videos on the LP Discovery, you can also see Tandy with his CS80..
You can see them here: ruclips.net/video/GJuTIxwQw0k/видео.html
Tandy used other synths since the beginning of the group in the early 70's, such as of course the legendary mini moog, various ARPs (2600, Odissey, Quadra, etc.), various other Moogs (polimoog, memory moog, etc..) and from the 80's, specifically from 1981 with the LP Time, is when Oberheim became the main synth both in the studio and live..
@@heavyheadrecords Thanks for all your knowledge - I will use your research to come back with another cs80 famous sounds video - THANK YOU!
@@AndyWhitmore 👍
Pretty simple sounds pretty easy to get from the much cheaper synths.
I can see where you're coming from! Many modern synths offer great sounds at a lower price point, but the CS-80 has that unique character that’s hard to replicate.
Italian and German string machines created the similar sounds.
@@marguskiis7711 I agree
Also stevie wonder plays on his albums but not on songs in the keys of life he had gx1 dream machine large polyphonic synthesizer with three keys like a organ then he had cs80 late 70s through journey secrets of plants and 1980s hotter than July Jermaine jackson let's get serious
Funny you should say that but you are right. I remember back in the late 70s Stevie Wonder used a synth that was "unavailable" to us mere mortals - which I later found out to be the legendary Yamaha GX1! Well spotted - & yes - Wonder used the CS80 for about 8 years after purchasing it shortly after completing "Songs in the Key of Life"
@@AndyWhitmore right
You have a beast and u can't even try to explore the amazing possibilities that it offers. You replay the hooks of The Genius but with the same or more or less similar wave and sound. Sorry. Best luck next time.
I have done several videos on the CS80 exploring it - please check the rest of my channel - thanks for watching
@@AndyWhitmore Maybe you could try adding reverb, echo,delays...
@@winterland2011 here are the same licks with FX - please check - ruclips.net/video/uhGZS1OO0uk/видео.html
Get a CS80 and show us how it's done
@@jumpingman8160 So the talent here is the pocket size, aham...If I had the chance, please don't cry, I would enjoy taking from that treasure MANY FAR BETTER SOUNDSCAPES. Even you could do it.
No.
I appreciate your feedback! If there's something specific you'd like to share, I'm all ears!
