Thank you for watching Ramona and I appreciate the super thanks as well!
I miss Bordner's and A&D Food-A-Rama in the Massillon/Canton OH area....and Haine's in Pittsburgh......
The stuff sold at grocery stores back then tasted better than today.
Farmer jack had great potatoes salids & barbecue chicken
*I freakin’ LOVE this channel. ALL of your vids transport me back to happier, simpler times.* ❣️
Thank you for watching and I'm happy to hear you are enjoying the channel!
Times where u weighed a lot less.
Great memories with people who are not with us anymore and ya ...... Slimmer
Yes I love this channel
Now I've got the blues!!!
Pantry Pride and A&P both bring back sweet memories of my childhood. Thank you for taking me back, Rhetty!
Thank you for sharing ones you used to go to.
@@river4462 😊 There's nothing like fond memories.
Same here, Now most of the A&P stores are now ACMEs here in NJ.
@@CrossOfBayonne 😔
i remember both Eagle and Pantry Pride. though Eagle is long gone, i am (almost) certain one PP still remains. i think it's in Bloomington IL though i could be wrong.

I still get A&P's 8 O'Clock Coffee in my grocery store :)
That is really interesting. Thank you for watching Adventures in Modern Recording!
I had no idea 8 o'clock coffee was A&P coffee. I can buy here in Tucson, AZ
It’s good coffee for the price.
8:00 coffee ☕ is the best!! Hard to find in San Diego.
I didn't know that was A & P either
What I love about this video is seeing the clothes and the cars back then.
Thank you for watching Jennifer!
Fuzzy Memories has the Museum of classic television whole taped episodes of news, soap operas, tv shows, commercials included! I love watching them, I was just noticing that on a newscast from 1979
They need to bring back the old car styles. They had character back then, now they all look the same.
I was a kid in the 1950s so I remember all this. It was a different world back then for sure.
When mom dressed up to get ready to go to the store, we would go to "Rosco Tempo", "Pantry", "Lucky" or "Farmers Market"....I always liked going to Lucky because there was a Chinese food restaurant next door with direct entry and Mom would buy some chicken fried rice on the way out ..... love those memories
People did dress up then. Even for a store. It was nice.
When I was a baby and toddler, my grandmother would take me shopping. We lived in Las Vegas, and it really was an entirely different world back then! The store we went to was called "Mayfair". It was at the corner of Tropicana and either paradise, or Maryland Parkway, I'm not sure. That was for canned goods and produce. Then we'd go to this little Italian deli to buy cheese and cold cuts. Then to the bread store, and lastly to Schulman's meats for beef, chicken, pork, etc. A shopping day was a full day for grandma and me. I'm going to be 55 in 2 days, but I still remember our shopping routine. ❤
it does suck that small stores are overshadowed by big Walmart, Albertsons, Kroger or whatever your regional store is.
Yes it does. Thank you for watching Flash Music Archive!
Yeah it truly is. Too bad we didn’t realize what our spending dollar would beget us in the future. We were lucky enough to have experienced it though!
@@bmonster some have no choice but to raise prices just to make ends meet, especially if you spend more just to keep your business up and running.
Giant Tiger is the one we went to when I was a baby in the mezzazoic age. Then Pick & Pay and Heighnien's (however you spell it), when I got older.
@@presmasterflash7555 Tell me something that's better now than years ago .
My mom shopped at Dominick’s in Chicago. She was saying the other day she would have liked to have grocery delivery back then because she didn’t drive until she was 34 and we moved to the suburbs. She used to get a lot of exercise that way.
Wow! She was a late driver! Thank you for watching and telling us about your Mom Lisa!
@@RhettyforHistory Thanks! It’s probably why she doesn’t look 73 now.
I used to shop at Dominick's too in late 90s and early 2000s before they closed. Two of them opened up as Jewel in my area.
@@gooniesgirl1979Lansing had one until 2001
I remember Dominick's!
When I was a kid there was a grocery store called Red & White that was approximately 2 to 3 minutes from where I live. My mom, my brother and myself would go there almost daily to buy groceries. We were sad when it went out of business so they could make room for CVS Pharmacy but we do have fond memories of the store. Thank you for the trip back down memory lane ❤😊.
In TX, we had Skaggs Alpha Beta as well as the A&P and Piggly Wiggly. Food Lion tried to enter the market but failed miserably leaving behind a ton of large empty buildings repurposed as churches, call centers and antique malls mostly.
In my part of DFW everything was Minyards or Safeway. when I was old enough to be shopping for myself, I loved Food Lion...for the simple fact it was always empty! I could get in and out in no time.
Food Lion is really big out here in The Northern VA atea
I love seeing the advertised grocery prices! And look at those old cars!
I recently got a reprint of a 1906 Sears & Roebuck catalog at a thrift store. It's a riot! The crazy medicines, the hats, violins.
Thank you for watching Scott!
@@chichi9851Remember the candy counter at Sears back in the day? The smell of chocolate and popcorn......uhhhhh
As a kid, the very small town we lived in had yet to have a Wal-Mart move into it (or nearby anyway), so my granddad would always shop at the local IGA. Really good memories of that.
We still have an IGA near us in Dublin PA
We still have a few IGAs in our small country towns. 5 for $25 for meats is the best! ❤
We still have a couple near Camden, SC, they beat Food Lion when it comes to meat, fish and produce
@@kirkmorrison6131 Man, all I have near me are a local chain that's SUPER expensive (though it's the only place around that carries good cheese curds for when I make poutine), a Winco, Wal-Mart and Aldi. That's about it. Things like Food Lion and Publix might as well be in another country to me.
@@Dorelaxen Well they are spread out over about 20 miles, but I live kinda in the middle so none of them are that far.
I remember as a kid helping my Dad packing shelves he worked for Nabisco years ago. And many of those stores are long gone like Grand Union, Pantry Pride, Save-A-Lot, Basics, Sun, Treasury, Jeffersons and Phar-mor. This was in South Florida back then. Miss those days so much.
In the Detroit area, through the 1970s and 80s, we had Great Scott, Chatham, Danny's Foods, Foodland, and up until 2000 or so, Farmer Jack was a big name! Sad to see them disappear, especially when now I see a big sign with faded shadows of what used to be the Farmer Jack logo with some leftover wire and pegs still in the sign
Thank you for watching and telling us about some others you had in the Detroit area Randy!
I remember all those except Foodland.
@@dannydaw59 Foodland had the best fried chicken. You could buy the family bucket cheaper than KFC, and it was better quality.

Growing up in San Antonio; my parents frequented Piggly Wiggly. Kind people, clean stores. It was awesome
A&P. I remember my mother getting the stamps and filling up the cards to redeem for household items. Every time I went with she’d buy me a pack of Fruit Stripe gum. 😂 2 chews and that stuff as done.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories Slamgod!

Green stamps? Or was that just a Publix thing?
@@kristinwood8884 Yep! It was a green stamp thing. A&P near me closed in the very early 80's. I have not seen anything the likes of green stamps since. Jewel and Dominick's had promotions along the same lines, but nothing like the A&P
@@Slamgod in Sussex, NJ the main grocery store forever was A&P, up until 2002, it may still be there.
I'm from a town in FL Vero Beach, that has at least 6 Publixs.
I recently moved to upstate NY, Wegmans is as close as I will get to Publix.😔

A&P reminds me of Winn Dixie, Kroger, now in NY Tops.
I'll always miss Publix..
Hinky Dinky… Seriously! I can’t stop laughing! Yet Piggly Wiggly survives.
Growing up in Detroit, we had Farmer Jacks, Wrigleys, Chathams and Great Scott stores, all of which are gone now.
Thank you for watching and mentioning a few more for us to remember Rick!
Thanks rhetty. Growing up in NY, those grocery markets do bring back memories as I walked the aisles endlessly with my mom and sisters. Other grocery markets on Long Island I also grew up on was Finast, King Kullen, and Pathmark.
I forgot about those. My Nan & Pop lived on LI. Used to shop at Bohacks & IGA
Some of these forgotten grocery stores should make a comeback
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories in the grocery store AJ!
@@samanthab1923 Bohak off the rack! Modells had an attached supermarket
King Kullen is still around on Long Island but with very few stores .
I remember as a kid growing up outside of Buffalo, NY and the local groceries were Bells and Super Duper.
Go Bills!
Thank you for watching and sharing a couple more for us to remember JayKayZed!
I also remember the Bells store in Lewiston NY. I recall that there were Super Duper markets as well, but I don’t recall the locations.
I have very fond memories of shopping at Magruder's and Memco in Northern Virginia every Saturday with my dad. My mother hated grocery shopping but my father, who had grown up quite poor and become quite prosperous, absolutely loved filling our cart with quality food. He was a foodie and also stopped at various ethnic markets for exotic treats. Delightful memories.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories with us Marie. It is interesting to hear about the differences of your mother and father.
I shopped at Memco!
Anyone remember Fedmart? Hired as a bagger during high school in Phoenix Arizona in 1981, worked until 1982 when it went out of business. It was located at the south entrance to Metrocenter shopping mall where Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was filmed inside.
I miss how buildings used to look all different and had interesting architecture.
I once watched a RUclips video about a man [whose hobby was visiting dead malls and abandoned buildings] looking outside a long abandoned Kohl's [grocery]. I was in awe of the overall architecture but became sad when the man peeked inside with his camera
They sure did and I miss that too. Thank you for watching Foxy Lovelace!
That's called character, for lack of a more catchy term
It seems like what kills stores is that when the original owners retire or the store gets bought by a new owner, things go south. Often new management tries to run them differently, rebrand them, sell off their real estate, run them into debt, or other means. It just seems like we have let too many mergers and buyouts happen. This killed the local flare and local ownership, and the store becoming part of the local town culture aspect.
The original ownership does usually have a different vision than what others think should happen with the business. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts Stephen!
Who remembers the Frankford Unity Stores?
Excellent comment and well said.
I,live in Detroit, Michigan. And I still remember when Detroit had 6,major supermarket chain stores and they are:
1.A&P
2.CHATHAM COMPLETE FOOD CENTERS
3.FARMERJACK SUPERMARKETS
4.GREAT SCOTT !SUPERMARKETS
5.KROGER/BI-LO SUPERMARKETS
6.WRIGLEY'S SUPERMARKETS/PACKERS
Right now, there's only 3 ,major chain stores and they are:
1.KROGER
2.MEIJER SUPERSTORES
3.WAL*MART,SUPERSTORES.
Smith’s has seemed to utterly disappear. Other stores 🏬 have merged into other companies. Montgomery Ward’s, Lamont’s, Carr’s 🚗, Radio Shack 📻 and Sears, have utterly died. Your friend, Jeff.
A lot have disappeared. Thank you for watching Jeff!
Thank you for featuring Minyards. I've watched a handful of these type of videos and NO ONE ever mentions them. They were a pretty big deal here in DFW when I was growing up, and they're still missed. I had one within walking distance. 👍
What is DFW?
I figured it out. Dallas-Fort Worth.😊
My daughter's first job was at Minyards here in Texas. DFW area.
I had one by my elementary school when I was a kid!! And my house was 4 blocks away!😊Now the place is called FOOD-RITE.. 😢
They definitely were a huge player in the market down there. I loved going to them. Thank you for watching Russell!
Wow,look what prosperity looked like...

I remember Market Basket, Lucky/Thrifty, Stater Bros, and The Giant in Anaheim, The Boys in Huntington Beach, Mayfair Market in Silverlake, and McMahan's Market in the Inland Empire back in the 70's and 80's. Market Basket had those automatic coffee and soda machines with paper cups and ice. I thought they were so cool!
Long Island, NY has lost a ton of grocery stores over the years. I believe now it's down to only Shop-Rite and Stop N Shop (there's probably a Whole Foods somewhere as well). I never in my life thought I'd see Pathmark go down but it did.
Thank you for watching and telling us a little more about the Long Island area!
I used to live on Long Island and I now live in Houston. I got upset when I heard about PathMark and Waldbaum’s closing down. I used to go grocery shopping every weekend with my mom.
Nassau county here, experiencing childhood memories of Bohack and AnP.
I remember A&P growing up. When PathMark went I was surprised.
I remember Big Star, they were in the Atlanta area. That was where my mom shopped in the 70’s and early 80’s .I can’t remember when they closed their doors.
Growing up in the Detroit area, my mom shopped at Great Scott, Packer & Farmer Jacks. Great memories!
Thank you for watching and sharing some your mom went to Brian!
Growing up in the 1960 , every Saturday night my family of 6 would all pack ourselves into the family station wagon and head out to A&P , under $ 100 dollars would feed the whole family for the week including the stop at the local butchers aww the good old days ☮️
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of your family and A&P Pink salt!
I remember when may whole paycheck was $100 😆
Big Bear 😢 I loved that store. I still remember this donut the bakery made called dreamboat. It was the best donut I’ve ever had.
We went to the Big Bear on Broad Street in Lincoln Village in Columbus.
When I was a kid my mom used to take me shopping at Alpha Beta, Giants, and then Smiths in Southern California. Giants seemed huge and Smiths had a lot of tasty sandwiches and Chinese food.
Growing up in North Myrtle Beach, SC I remember going to the A&P with my parents back in the 80's. I always thought it was neat seeing that big red 8 o'clock coffee grinder at the end of the check out. Today, the former A&P is virtually unrecognizable. Currently it houses The Grill House restaurant.
Do u remember the big yellow chicken at the front that would lay an egg w a gift for a quarter??😁💖❤ our Pa store had it!!
@@phillyjilly Are you talking about the Lucky Eggs machine? It seems like I vaguely remember something like that. I do remember those huge round HVAC vents on the ceiling. As a young kid I always thought there were huge fans behind those vents. The bathroom was in the very back of the store, below the main office. I do remember it was underneath the wooden stairs.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of A&P!
A&P had a few locations in my town.
-- One behind a bank
-- one that was built on farmlands. The building grew by New York-based IGA in the 1990s. It's currently owned by local pharmacist as a pharmaceutical store/grocery store/delicatessen. C&S Grocers does supply some items to this store.
You'll still see A&P bags around.
Thank you for watching and sharing your memories of the store Nigel!
I don't.
A & P I went with my parents when I was in elementary school. Liked the H & K green stamps and licked the stamps and paste it in the books! It was around the middle 1960's.
it's great looking at all the good old days grocery stores, in addition I thoroughly enjoyed looking at the cars...boy does that take me back...great video...thank you..
Oh, definitely room for a part two on this topic! Northern California had several small to larger chains that went by the wayside over the decades! Food Villa, Fry's, PW Super and Gemco to name a few! Where I went to high school there were two almost identical large retail lot spaces right across the street from each other! One housed a full Alpha Beta and the other had an Albertsons for some reason! A funny thing about the Fry's Supermarkets. When they decided to go into electronics in the 90s they didn't change the font on the signs from the grocery stores and the old mascot that was a smiling grocery bag then became a smiling computer chip! Haha!
Fascinating!
Louis Stores , too
Back in the early eighties there was a store called Skag's Alpha Beta in College Station Texas. Never saw a one anywhere else in Texas and that store was rebranded as a Houston-based Gerland's soon after. It's now part of the A&M campus.
I only know if Fry's as an electronic store and didn't realize they were once a grocery store. That is fascinating. Thank you for watching and telling us a little more about them. I do need to do a part two and Frys was on my radar for being an electronics store.
*laughs* God I remember Gemco. They had those yellow pricetags. I think we still had some unopened 'new' Kodak film rolls found when cleaning out the garage a few years back.
Sad you did not mention Humpty Dumpty Stores in and around Oklahoma City. Worked for them prior to entering the Army in 1966 doing maintenance of all stores including the one in your home town of Moore.
@@TammieR-B Bless you TammieR-B, means a lot to an Army Veteran and a life long cop.

We had a Skaggs Alpha Beta here in Waco, TX in the early 80's. The Alpha Beta name was dropped at some point but it stayed Skaggs until it closed. The building still exists in the form it was when it was a grocery store except the delivery dock is was closed in. It is now a private school.
Thank you for watching and telling us about the Skaggs in your area Robert!
The one in Midwest City, OK became Skaggs Albertsons, then Jewel Osco, then just Albertsons before all Oklahoma locations were closed (many then became Homeland). Wal-Mart had a location behind the MWC store that moved to a super center location and built a Neighborhood Market on that site.
Born in 1982, grew up in RI, the defunct grocery stores I remember are Almacs, Ro Jack's and A&P.
We had Kash n’ Karry here in Australia but it was spelt Cash and Carry.
It opened it 1923, I haven’t seen one for many years, so I think they are finished but I’m not sure.

I remember Dominics because my Dad used to work for Jewell Hillfarm for years out of Melrose Park Illinois and Dominics and Jewell were competitors. One time I had the audacity to suggest we go to Dominics due to a sale on something or other. OMG did I ever hear about it. Two local food stores in Milwaukee that disappeared were Sentury Foods and Red Owl Foods. There's a Winn Dixie in the Florida keys, in Marathon but I usually shop at the Publix across the street.
A&P, Big Bear, Marsh's, Delchamps, Jitney Jungle. Those are the ones I have patronized down the years in this video. I now work as a contractor employee in the offices of a large supermarket chain. I know how hard it is to keep a profitable grocery business going. The margins are thin. Thanks for another look at some old friends. I knew what a jitney was in 1992 when I moved to Hattiesburg MS (it's slang for a nickel), but another episode in this series explained how the jungle got there (a newspaper typo for jingle). It is very interesting to see these.

We shopped at Delchamps in Fort Walton Beach, Florida when we lived there in the 1980's.
I remember shopping at Gemco. It was like Vons or Albertsons.
Florida had a couple of grocery stores that need to be remembered. My mother worked as a meat wrapper for Thriftway, which was a smaller store that operated as neighborhood markets. Big Star was an early box store where customers brought their own bags and products were stocked in their big cardboard boxes, before Sam's became famous. I also remember locally owned IGA stores that usually operated out of small buildings in poorer neighborhoods and sold what the local people wanted. My mother spent several decades working for the grocery business working as a meat wrapper, starting at Thriftway, then moving on to Publix, then to Big Star and then she retired after almost 20 years with Winn Dixie. When the meat departments became more automated she moved to the front of the store as a cashier at Winn Dixie where she had many customes who would only checkout through her lane.

@@growlie2676 I thought he missed Piggly Wiggly too, but, they still exist just not in my area, or yours I guess.
@@CaseAgainstFaith1 Where are the Piggly Wiggly located at?
🎉 greetings from coastal Mississippi. I remember these stores. I miss A&P...Piggly Wiggly.... Winn-Dixie...😢 Very good job on your research. Enjoyed memories.....
I remember "Lucky Food Store" in San Marcos California! 😊
Interesting video. My favorite store growing up in Tulsa in the 1960s was Sipes Food Barn. Sipes had a small movie theatre in the store for kids. They would show silent movies and cartoons.
Thank you for watching and telling us about that one Chris. That sounds like a really good one with the movies.
Thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful look into the past.
You're welcome and thank you for watching Paul!
Marsh was my go-to for my high school lunch break in the 80s. Good memories. I have ready-to-go meals delivered to my home these days. So busy. Lol
I'm sitting here looking at pictures of old grocery stores from before I was born, in a country I've never been to. The older car styles were so much better than today.
I do love looking at the old photos. Thank you for watching Avalon!
I remember the old A & P market in Wolfeboro N.H. I shopped there with my mom when I was a little girl many years ago. In all honesty, she preferred a little corner store call the Market Basket which was more expensive, but smaller and easier to navigate. I know A & P is long gone but I think Market Basket still exists as Harvest Market.
Thank you for watching and telling us about some of the places where you and your mom shopped Ellen!
I remember that A&P from the summers when we'd stay for a week or two in Wolfeboro. My mom liked to shop there for the cottage we rented on Rust Pond.
How about Lucky grocery stores? You briefly mentioned Lucky at 1:33. They were here in Southern California but now gone.
It is a good one to mention. There are a lot more both big and small that could be in another video. Thank you for watching Sidd!
Thank you. I also remember the neighborhood Red and White small grocery stores.
It was bittersweet to see Big Bear on here. I grew up shopping there with my parents in the late 80s and can still remember the basic layout of the fruits/vegetables section. Never saw the live bear, but certainly remember the advertising jingles and bear-themed art on the paper bags. Thanks for the memories!
I enjoyed watching your video. Two grocery stores I can remember were Foodtown, and Acme, also Super Kmart, and Valley Fair.
Thank you for watching and sharing a couple others with us Jeannette!
Thanks for covering Delchamps. We still talk about them today. 😊
You're welcome and thank you for watching Traci!
A&p and Loblaws left buffalo for Canada in 1975 and the last time I was in Canada back in early 88 both supermarket's were doing quite well there. I always felt the reason they moved to Canada, is because they were fed up with new York and all it's taxes a red tape! In 1969, 1970, a&p shopping carts had 7 in wheels on the back of the carts and I'd steal them to use as wheels for the gas powered go carts I used to make. I steered it with my feat and ran the throttle on this 1936 Briggs and Stratton side shaft, 4 stroke engine! I knew a kid 3 blocks away who was selling pre WW2 lawnmower engines out of his parents garage! 5 dollars per engine!
I loved Alpha Beta as a kid. I had a steel toy semi truck, complete with the trailer with the Alpha Beta logo on it. That was my favorite toy truck.
Pantry Pride was my favorite. They had the best grocery prices and doubled the face value of coupons.
Thank you for watching and sharing which one was your favorite teasea3152!
One you missed was Penn Fruit. I believe this may have only been local to Pennsylvania/New Jersey area. Another, Shop-N-Bag, was my go to store when I left home and got out on my own.
Thank you for watching and mentioning a couple more. Someone else mentioned the Penn Fruit. Was that a chain there in the area or was it a single store?
I grew up in Northern California, our family always shopped at Safeway!! Vons in Southern California, both are still going today 👍
Living in Michigan,my favorite store was 'Farmer Jacks'..surprised you didnt include that...and also 'Chathams'..
Definitely room for more episodes. Thank you for watching Kim!
There are about 4 Foodfair supermarkets still in West Virginia that I know of.
Very interesting. Thank you for watching and telling us about that one serlissa!
Yeah we still got some food fairs around us up in Northeast Ohio
I have some fond memories of Grand Union. There used to be one in a town I used to live, until it was taken over by CVS. 😠 I remember residents of the town had tried boycotting it, and I likely would have too if I had been older. It was the only actual grocery store in the town. After it closed, some like my family were forced to go to a grocery store in a nearby town that was more costly. 🤦♀️
Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories of Grand Union. Was that store small or was the CVS just big? They seem like they would be two different sizes.
I lived in Prince George’s County Maryland. We had Grand Union grocery stores,A&P,Jumbo
@@RhettyforHistory The store was average size, I think. Wasn't the biggest, but not small. When Grand Union left ); CVS took over the building, which is unfortunate still there and operating. /:
Grew up shopping in A&P in KCK.
Moved to Texas in the early 80s and shopped in Weingarten’s.
Fond memories of both. ❤
Growing up in NJ, I remember Grand Union, Path Mark, Foodtown, Shop-Rite and the A&P supermarkets. I also remember the Woolworth's department store.
