    Reading should definitely not feel like homework. Good for you for recognizing and changing some things up. I have joined a few challenges and hope to just have fun with my reading while reducing my unread owned books. I have discovered over the last year or two that the fastest way to put me in a slump is to create a TBR for myself. Thus, the challenges. I’ll take the prompts each month and pick a book from my shelves. No lists and no piles. Fingers crossed! And congratulations on 4K! Well deserved. You’re a joy. 💜

      Thank you so much! And yes, definitely agree- as soon as I feel like it’s required reading, I become a bit of a stroppy child who doesn’t want to do it anymore aha
      Good luck for your 2024 reading!

    I’m starting an opened length project of reading first all Joan Didion in publication order, first the novels and then the nonfiction and then all of Oliver Sacks in publication order. Previously, I’ve read about 1/2 of Didion and 1/3 of Sacks.

    I start way to many projects. Every year. It's not that I don't learn, it's just that I want to read everything 🤪 So I just make very sure not to total up the number of books I'd have to read in order to complete all my projects. Instead I just pretend that it's doable 😅 Congrats on 4K subscribers!

    I love this, Bob. You’re like ‘less projects less homework please… so here’s a list of my projects for 2024!’ I’ve done the same though.. no projects just fun reading and then I’ve made project plans immediately. Congrats on 4k, have a good one!

    One of my new long term goals is to read all the winners of the Booker Prize so I was a bit blown away by your goal of reading all the short lists. I really enjoy reading projects as long as there aren’t specific time constraints because I’m a mood reader - so I definitely understand that homework feeling. Congrats on hitting 4K and I look forward to seeing more of your content this year.

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  6 месяцев назад +1

      Aha, I’m not sure if I would recommend trying to read all the shortlists! It’s a lot more books than I think I realized at first 😂 but some real gems!
      I hope you like reading the winners! And definitely feel you on the mood reader thing!
      Thank you so much, and here’s to a great 2024!

    I’ve been keeping book journals since I started following book tube in 2015? It means I have lists of books I never got to in many different years.
    I’ve made a list of 24 books I’d like to read in 2024. However I know that I have a pattern. If things are going well, I’m reading literary fiction with no problem. As soon as I get ill ( like now) I only want to read romance/crime fiction or something light and fun.
    Since Christmas I’ve been reading the fun stuff. My brain needs the rest.

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  6 месяцев назад +1

      Oh wow, that’s great- that must be useful! And definitely agree with that in terms of energy levels- I think a mistake I made a lot in 2024 was trying to push through with some literary novels when I was tired or stressed.
      I hope you feel better soon! And yes to fun reading!

  • @scallydandlingaboutthebook2711
    @scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 6 месяцев назад +2

    More fun. More crime. Absolutely! I can't help myself getting sucked into goals but try to avoid too many of them being time-bound so I don't get that homework feeling. I still find there are things I really want to read that keep being edged out because they don't fit some project or reading event. So this could be my year for getting to those. And yes, some more frivolity and crime.

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  6 месяцев назад

      Aha, yes! And totally fair- the timing thing is a big part of that pressure, I think! I hope you have a good one!

    I definitely feel the push-pull of larger form projects vs. the feeling of homework in reading. I tend to be v loose about my projects -- I'm amazed and a little aghast at the booker project that I have to assume gave yr channel its name, for instance. may the balance be a fun one to find in the coming year. happy new year & happy reading! also, congratulations on 4k!

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  6 месяцев назад

      Yes! It’s such a difficult balance at times, because there are some Booker books I wouldn’t have read without the motivation of the project, which I then went on to love!

    I've been putting off reading Discworld for soo long. I've read Good Omens and I'm pretty sure I will love him as an author but he always ends up on the backburner.
    Reading in French and German is so cool.
    My multi year goal is to read a book published every year in the 20th century and it has been steadily going over the last two years.
    Ohh, talking about Margaret Atwood. Have you read the Edible Woman, her debut? I'm in the midst of it and I have so many thoughts but barely anyone has read it.

    • @BobTheBookerer
      @BobTheBookerer  6 месяцев назад

      Ahh, yes! Same here- I love what I’ve read but I need to make it a goal so I actually sit down and have fun with his work!
      Ooh, that is such a fun goal! How has that been going?
      Ooh, yes! I loved The Edible Woman! So surreal in the way that I love of Atwood’s!

      @@BobTheBookerer I have 18 years left. (7 of which are begore 1920. It is super hard to find books in print in the 1901-1907 especially). It's so funny as I have read so much in the 1880s and 90s. But no one likes the Edwardians apparently). Other than that I pretty much have one or two years a decade to fill in. The ones that are so strange to me is when I've read four books published in 1962 but none in 1961 and I'm like why is this happending to me? I am not in a huge rush to finish and I enjoy it!

    Hoping to stick with established classics and nonfiction books in my current areas of interest. "Stick" being a pretty key word. I have been much better at starting books than finishing them. I've also fallen into chasing the latest and not so greatests that are popular one month then more or less forgotten the next. I've written up several TBRs for 2024 and already abandoned them. So I'm hoping to mood read while maintaining my general goals. I've started "Beloved" and that's going well so far--making decent progress. Also want to finish off some of the books I started last year then abandoned.

    • @BobTheBookerer
