- Francis Ford Coppola's Youth Without Youth stars Tim Roth as Dominic Matei, an aging professor of linguistics who finds his youth miraculously restored after surviving a cataclysmic event. Dominic's physical rejuvenation and apparent immortality is matched by a highly evolved intellect, which attracts the attention of Nazi scientists, forcing him into exile. While on the run, he reunites with his lost love, Laura, and works to complete his research into the origins of human language. When his research threatens Laura's health, Dominic is forced to choose between his life's work and the great love of his life. Youth Without Youth also stars Alexandra Maria Lara, Bruno Ganz, Alexandra Pirici, Marcel Iures, and Andre M. Hennicke. It is based upon a novella by Mircea Eliade and produced by Coppola for American Zoetrope. Anahid Nazarian and Fred Roos are executive producers.

The novel is also called ,,Youth without youth" and is written by the Romanian historian of religion, fiction writer, philosopher, and professor Mircea Eliade. He is one of the greatest Romanian and his fiction writings surely worth reading!
agree legends
If this movie was a failure then we need more failures.
First of all this movie was released in 2007 and benjamin button in 2008, and second this one is an actual screenplay of Mircea Eliade's novel "Youth without youth" which was written in 1976.
Eliade's novel is based on the Romanian folk tale "Youth without aging and life without death"
who is watching this year? :)
This film is a modern classic, such great style. Great to see some new Coppola. Is it just me or did most of the country miss this film? The concept is similar to a 'Benjamin Button' transmogrification thing, but predates it by almost 2 years...
in 1976 eliade wrote a book with the same name, this film is based on that.
Eliade's novel is based on the Romanian folk tale "Youth without aging and life without death"
The Myth of Eternal Return by Mircea Eliade ; )
this Movie is included so many chinese philosophy like tao or metempsychosis!!!
It may not be too familar for many people unless you've heard these concept before. However, this is a good movie indeed!!!
This is one of the most OUTSTANDING big production films made since the WATCHMEN, and yet it got limited release in North America & Australasia. This film should've received several Oscars. Yet it is relegated to special interest, cult-film status amongst officianados. Hollywood are morons! This was Coppola's best since the first two Godfathers. And he did a fairly faithful rendition of Eliade's masterful novel.
See it!
u familiar with eliade? at one point I wanna make a film on another novel of his, you might have heard about it's translated even in russian, it's called 'la tiganci'
Greatest movie I've seen
Aaaaaaagh! People! Netflix™ this gem. It's awesome! Thank you, Sony, for uploading this trailer! Two hours well spent ~ (•8-D
@zarathusa888 Of course I don't mind. I see what you mean with your comment. Sorry,I tend to be very patriotic sometimes...but you see, I cannot help to be very proud of Eliade's Romanian origin.
Based on my compatriot Mircea Eliade novel
Esti roman?
the interesting thing is this was filmed in bucharest romania
and quite a few of the actors are romanians , at least everything else turns to rumble , arts are still doing great in romania( from the creativity point of view )
my no.1 movie
im here because of that girl Lara *she played traudl from downfall* :P
Disagreed with a passion. This movie was genius, and has scaled to the top of my favorite films.
curious case of benjamin button here, lol, but with the lie to me guy, so weird ;)) thanx for posting ;)))
his name is tim roth and he´s a very good actor, check him out in reservior dogs
He's good in everything. Even the bad stuff.
and it's inspired by Eliade's book tinerete fara tinerete
Shamanism by Mircea Eliade : )
iv just finished watching this and i really liked it.im a big tim roth fan anyway but i just thought the story and acting were superb.
Does anyone know the name of the song that begins at the 1:00 minute mark...?
Well, that was a rhetorical question.
You folks have internet access? Wow, you're soooo cool, Brewster...
Why it had limited realease?? is a good movie, underrated
yes it is.....
What are the name of the songs please ?
yea i know
@kondurperusix do you know if it came out in Canada? It looks like a great movie! Plus, I love all of Tim Roth's work!!!
a iesit filmul sau inca nu?
incredible film
wow
What`s the name of the guy from the minute 1:27?
@kondurperusix This movie is amazing.
@jerichogirl30 i would alow myself to do a litle corection..i hope you dont mind..i have read prety much everything eliade ever wrote and i dont think im wrong when saying that he is one of the greatest man that ever lived on the face of the earth...he created the history of religions out of a desire to make the knoledge to all human kind
is that matt damon I see in the trailer wanting to hide his identity?
Is it tue this never gota a wide release in the US ?
Is it supposed to be such an uncommercial dreck no majors picked up ? Or there is just no more room in North American theatres for almost anything that's not a remake of a horror film nor is it helmed by M. Bay?
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (1921) from F. Scott Fitzgerald- obviously i really dont think that ...plagiary; but the trailer gives an air...
@nutzw1 the movie just went nowhere, the storyline just seemed to be sporadic with no central idea. i enjoy watching movies that are a bit twisted or take a little time to understand but this was just all over the place.
becose this movie is special
ca de obicei... romania
no real connection to romania, except the fact that eliade was born a citizen of romania at that time. he was arrested in romania, put in sanatorium etc, he fled at some point and lived abroad, died abroad, he died in chicago. romania has brought nothing as an added value to eliade, on the contrary. same goes for constantin brancusi, his grand-daughter lives two streets away from 'mantuleasa' street, where eliade lived, on 'avram iancu' street. you can literally go to talk with her, she is old but she is gonna tell u how he why did romanian most revered sculptor, left for france. let's not get drunk on cold water.
Watched this film to my chagrin. Someone on imdb summed it up well - "Muddleheaded, self-indulgent and not much else" - Compared to the likes of Mulholland Drive and The Fountain this pales in the magnitude of bizarreness. Those who revel in self-indulgent, fashionably-arcane films like these I cannot say much. For the rest as bad as the editing is the musical score stellarly sucks.
Osvaldo Golijov has no eye for the moving image.
A sprinkling of Sanskrit lines doesnt resuscitate a film!
i dont now why but it reminds me the movie of benjamin buttom, like this was a plagiary
this came out a year before benjamin button though
apreciez ca ai scris ma-ta corect, in rest totul e incorect
@kondurperusix Sorry ... but this film WAS bad. Nothing to do with "Idiocracy"
@nutzw1 in the nicest way possible, this movie was a masterpiece of shit
no just no
i think even einstein would have struggled to follow the story, very very boring movie, coppalla really should retire
