This is one of those songs that when we sing along, we all have the best English accent. "Getting bettah, oh'all the time. We saw Modern English at an 80's concert. They were great.
My husband and I dated in the early 80s. We broke up and led separate lives but reunited in 1999. I Melt With You is our song. On Jan. 6, 2001 we were married. A group of our friends went out on New Year's Eve to have a pre wedding party. When midnight came the first song of course was New Year's Day. The second song was I Melt With You. No one requested it. It was just fate. After more than 21 years, we would still melt with each other.
Robbie is such a wonderful man! We’ve spoken many times and he is honest and sweet. He also saved me from making a really bad decision in music . Thank you Robbie! All my love, Teresa Terry
This is one of the songs that defined my adolescent years back in the 80's when I was 14. This song was so huge here in the Philippines. I was so happy when I found an original used Sire maxi-single vinyl in a thrift shop four years later in a box of old records. Bought it for just a dollar in our local currency and became one of my most cherished record in my collection 'til this day and it never fails to brings me back to my teenage years whenever I listen to it. Thank you for featuring this timeless classic.

I have said for a long time that if I had to describe '80's music with one song, I would play "I'll Melt With You". I'm one of the lucky ones whose entire high school and college years were in the '80's decade. I experienced it all at the perfect age. This is the song that still stops me in my tracks every time I hear it. It brings so many memories back... Thank you for this video today. Made my day.
I met Robbie and the rest of the band at a record store in the spring of 1983, Austin Texas. They were all super nice guys. Still have photos and autographs 😀
I can’t believe you have Little Queen on your shelf and you forgot to mention Sylvan Song when you were listing rock bands who used mandolin! One of my favorite mando songs, it’s so beautiful and kick-ass.
Can you dig into an Australian 80's band called Kids in the Kitchen? 3 Big Hits with Change in Mood, Bitter Desire and Current Stand. They could have been another INXS global chart topping Aussie band, but it never came to pass. Bottled Lightning indeed.
Every time I've updated my playlist since the 80s ( back when you would wait for a song on the radio and press play/record on your cassette player ) This is one of the songs that I have always kept through the years. I never tire listening to it.
Valley Girl is on of my most favorite movies!! It just encapsulated that exact time in the 80s! Our parents were either weirdo hippies left over from the 60s, or Reagan conservatives that thought we knew nothing. We were all looking for our own “Randy or Julie”. Love was life’s great adventure! We all have our own soundtrack that goes with it. 😃

My childhood was also spent listening to my parents and older siblings boyfriend's albums sitting in my room alone in the music. Something i wouldn't change for the world. My first memory of this song was in high school. A local cover band had done their take on this song. It was a single on a cassette given away at promotion for our prom. This was in 1994. I really like the song and began looking into it. Everytime I hear this song it takes me back to my senior year of high school. What a fun memory. Interesting interview. Cool knowing what the song is about.

Professor, you are so humble and earnest about your love of music. I always look forward to your episodes. This " so called" 80's expert here learns something every time. Keep making the world a better place
Adam you do a wonderful job in these interviews. You treat these artists with respect with your informed questions with the right amount of nostalgia. It’s great how these artists open up and genuinely seem to enjoy their time with you.
Wow. I had no idea this was a Cold War song. Now that makes sense. New Wave Cold War songs were scary but comforting at the same time. It indeed felt better to dance the fear away. "Two Tribes" mix always gave me the chills with it's narration of a nuclear war protocol. "If your grandmother or any other member of your family should die whilst in the shelter, put them outside, but remember to tag them first for identification purposes".
I first heard this song in the movie Valley Girl and instantly fell in love with it. It's still in my top 5 of all time songs, I'll never tire of hearing it.
The song always reminds me of Valley Girl and Deborah Foreman’s infectious smile. It has your typical eighties sound of emphasizing the off beats and echo.
when i had my skydiving video made there were 3 choices for what song i wanted played in the background i picked panama from van halen because it was the least cheesy song in the list, this was my birthday gift from the coolest boss i ever had, on september 1st 2001 10 days before 911 8 days before my father died and my boss a few days later caught me tearing up on the roof and yelled at me get off the roof go home and come back when you're okay then he paid me for the 4 days i worked and i went home drank myself to sleep woke up saw the smoke from the first plane into the tower watched the second and tried to call the first person i could think of that i knew would be watching, my dad, my sister had come up from phoenix for the funeral and she was supposed to leave that afternoon when she answered i remembered... bad couple of days for me, but my skydiving video came out cool as hell
This tune is on my playlist that I use when I am doing exercise. Just finished a 58km bike ride, listened to it today and ironically it was the topic of your video today. It’s my Life is a must play on my exercise playlist too. Great 80s music
It was used in Valley Girl in 1982 and when they first came to the U.S.A. they were surprised that people knew the lyrics. Thanks for the Berlin " No More Words " T-shirt
After all this talk of end-of-the-world anthems, it occurs to me that "The Walls Came Down" by The Call deserves some attention. Unlike "Melt With You", there was nothing ironically cheerful about it, but it was still a work of art. It would also be interesting to know what happened to the members of The Call, whoever they were.
"Dream of better lives, the kind which never hate".... We are all still chasing this dream which makes this song both hopeful and heartbreaking at the same time. Thank you Professor for covering this classic!
It brings me back to the beginning of MTV: One Step Beyond & Our House (Madness), Living In A Ghost Town (The Specials), See You On The Other Side (Brian Briggs), Praying To The Aliens & Cars (Gary Newman), and so many more! After the Snow and Ricochet Days are filled with incredibly written songs. I Melt with You is so astoundingly excellent that all other songs by Modern English are underappreciated. Play these albums on your next road trip, and you'll have an an amazingly ethereal experience. Personally, I put Modern English right with Tears for Fears. Tears for Fears had more radio hits, but they're on the same page lyrically and with creative easy listening sounds.
Hey Professor, great tee! Berlin: their track 'You Don't Know' is head n shoulders above 'Take My Breath Away' IMHO. 100W+100W isn't enough for it. Keep up the great work
Modern English played on my campus (University of Maryland, College Park) I think either in the fall of 83 or the spring of 84. I was a DJ at our campus radio station at the time and the band came by the station on the day of the show to promote it. I had a total crush on Robbie Gray and I fan-girled all over him at the time. I have photos of me with the band from that afternoon. I was in the front row of the concert that night and got to go backstage for a bit. It was a total blast. “I Melt With You” is one of my most favorite songs to this day.
I think I was only introduced to this song at the turn of the 2000s with that Burger King commercial. I think I would remember hearing it when it was new if I had. I also wasn't aware it had been recorded in 1990. That it was more successful then ties in loosely with how successful The Cure were with "Friday I'm in Love" 2 years later. My favorite cover is the one Bowling For Soup did for the Sky High soundtrack in 2005. They made it sound corny and tongue-in-cheek, but it still worked.
If you could also do a video about the Valley Girl soundtrack and all the awesome songs, that would be epic. I keener the soundtrack didn’t exist for a long time and my fired and I searched high and low for it. Valley Girl was our favorite movie, being girls from Southern California.
