Graham isn't just known for building Pintos and Classic Ford engines, in this video he is building a NEW 3L engine for BMW E30 M20 Race Car.
What are the racing limits? 3000CC upper capacity.
What specs does the current engine have? 1987 E30 325 - original M20 engine, 12.25 : 1 compression ratio, Shrick 300 Race Camshaft, 285BHP.
What specs will the new engine be? 3.0L M54 Crankshaft, Custom JE pistons with low compression height, M20 B25 Engine.
I love that you keep the m20 alive, underrated engine imo
"My M20s make more than most people's M52s" badass man, love these motors.
Thank you for sharing guys! I built a 3.0L M20 for my 89' E30 Touring. Its a lovely engine, but its so costly to build, I dont see many people building their own. That being said.... So happy I did. Thank you for sharing more info with the world on this lovely and unique engine choice!
Hi Graham I read your forum about the e30 race car and it led me here 😊 I too play with m20s, if your going to use that m54b30 crank don't spin it over 7250rpm as they seem to brake, harmonic issue, we just finished a m20b31 and made 206rwkw and 340nm of torque, very healthy, I'm just finishing a 2.9 ATM that should make 330-340hp at the crank, the 84 or 86 mm cranks are the best to use for a race car that will do sustained revs
I only spin the current engine to 7200 as its on standard rods. Which fortunately is where it peaks, making the engine bigger will lower where the peak occurs anyway. Without a close ratio gearbox it wouldn’t make sense to make it more revs anyway
would love to see more coverage of this.
We put an m52 head on bandsaw in the early 2000s trying to see if we could get 9/16" headstuds to fit . Ended up just using 1/2" and o ringed the block. Alot of trying n failing but we succeeded in having the 1st 1000whp m52.
More M20 stuff..This is very intersting
Nice build.
Racehead RHD also do intakes for itbs. theirs is a nice straight shot extension of port and better than Dbilas.
Rhd is a tad long and a little small for 3+ literes
Can we see the torque curve it sounds so balanced too
This is one to watch and follow ....
Fancy bunch of bananas 😂
Nice car mate, really like that 2002 too 👍
Thanks 👍 at one point the 2002 will get back on a race track, will do some video on that once i finally get back doing something on it again
@@PenguinMotors
Nice 👍 such a cool car they both are.
Great video and engine
Would you conciser it worth going itb’s on a m20b23 323i
I thinking more power.
A cleaner engine bay.
Better economy.
Is that possible within a reasonable budget really.
Thanks
My 2.8 m20 gained over 20bhp going to ITB but costs a fortune to do, I think you will find gains much smaller on a road spec engine.
@@PenguinMotorsthanks I’ll stay away from it for now. That makes me feel much better about staying with the Bosch k-jetronic for now.
All the rest of the car can be made sound again.
Then maybe go itb in the future.
Thanks for the reply and input👍🏻👍🏻
Really amazing power from m20. Can you say more about head porting, what is done, what rocker arms, any photos? Thanks
Head is fully ported, oversize Ireland engineering inlet valves and Ireland rockers
@@PenguinMotors Thanks
Really nice, want to see the rest!
Love that m20 project do you use racing fuel ? For that type of compression ration can use normal fuel from gas pump because of the nock?
no i just use 99 octane pump fuel, which in the USA/canada would be about 94 octane
@@PenguinMotors ok thanks, i am making in a m20 stroked too and mine will be 11.56 to 1 and iam using the m54b25 pistons that are flat top piston with 885 head and i am afraid of the fuel because of the nock and the squich, 95octane and 98octane is what i have here in Portugal, what are the best to use in my case ?
98, my engine has full hemi chambers so no squish,
@@PenguinMotors ok thanks for the info and that just a massive powerfull m20 engine 👍👍
@PenguinMotors I have one question you still have original oil pan or you have any change for avoing air in oil pump?
What type of qautre mile times do you get and what's 0-60 like, just trying to compare if its worth me doing an m54 swap or going down your route. Will be for streer use mostly. Would be amazing to see the car in action.
No idea on quarter mile or 0-60 as it’s circuit racing car so it’s setup to corner, traction off the line is poor so it’s never been down the quarter or done a 0-60. One of the videos does have some on board footage from the first half of a race at Thruxton
Without opening up the engine. How can I tell if I have a 2.7 or 2.5 bottom end?
I know I have the 885 head on my car.
Without opening it up your never going to know. If the car or engine haven’t been messed with it’s unlikely to be a 2.7 as the only bmw made 2.7 was the eta engine which as standard doesn’t have a 885 head
How you getting on with that m54 crank?
not very far too busy doing everyone elses engines!
Mate, if you use the 2.5l 885 Head on this Build with this flat top pistons your engine will be proned to knock, because you will eliminate squish area.....
thanks for your input, in most instances i try to run a tight 0.030 squish, but its not possible with all engines, there are quite a few which don't have any. In this case the set up you describe is the same as my 2860cc engine which is on a standalone ecu and properly mapped, it makes 285bhp and has proved totally reliable, bearing in mind its in a race car so is only driven flat out.
@@PenguinMotors Maybe it's a try to go with 2.0l Head. Squish would be there and a quiet high cr.....good porting would be needed ... difficult but doable.
Hello, nice build i have my self a 2.8 stroker ! I have an issue that my timing belt at the camshaft pulley has the tedency to go near the head instead of the midle. Actually 1 2 mm ar out of the pulley. Have you ever had this issue?
Also nice build !! Looking forward seeing your build. Before going max flow on the head check out some forums cz max flow on the bench dosent guarantee performance.. you need air velocity also. There is one guy that supplies itbs that he also does porting on cnc with proven results.
that would suggest to me something is bent or out of alignment, my guess would be an issue with the tensioner, that can force the belt towards the back of the cam pulley. i agree a small flow increase does not always give more power
Nice build! What headgasket you used in the 2.8 engine?
a standard elring one
@@PenguinMotors thanks for the reply
Please help with the piston or link to where I can buy those Please
JE pistons freely available from the USA. You could talk to Cambridge motorsport who are importers. Within reason they can have whatever you want made
What stroker kit did you go for when you bored it out to a 2.8l?
its an m54 crank, on standard m20b25 rods with JE pistons
this is badass
no more video about this engine... ?
no actual progress but im still collecting parts, progress and videos will come, but unfortunately i have to work on clients engines first
@@PenguinMotors i totally understand. I'm myself free-lance worker.. and work goes first ! I'm also collecting parts haha same deal for everyone haha
Whats the rev limit? Also, what rods?
the 2.8 is on standard bmw rods and is revved to 7300. the 3.0 will be on Farndon steel rods
@@PenguinMotors niccee. What valve springs are u running on the 2.8?
@@PRINCEkris01 i think they are schrick ones
I am building a E30 with an M20 for the CSCC future classics. What ECU are you using? Motronic 1.2 with a chip or standalone? Also what injectors are you using?
i run an emerald ecu, sorry i cant remember what the injectors are, other than they are terracotta colour and emerald supplied them after i had issues with other suppliers. but as long as you don't use Chinese junk , any 250-300cc will support anything a naturally aspirated m20 will ever need
@@PenguinMotors thanks for the reply and I have been in contact with emerald. Also, what Gearbox do you use and do you have a close ratio kit installed? Looking to run the car at Anglesey in May stock then plan upgrades throughout the year
@@tomwhite2749 i run a bog standard 325 getrag with a 4.1 lsd.
Nice build for m20. I am also going to build a 3.0 M20 with 288 camshaft and target compression ration is 10:1 for daily drive , would you please share detailed information about rod and piston spec. Or could you suggest build information? Any reply would be greatly appreciated.
You can spec these from ireland engineering. If you want to go 3.0l You'll be looking at 86mm bore and up which is getting close to the limits of the M20. Rod length for an M52B28 crank is generally 135mm.
I built a 2.85L stroker, 84.5mm bore, 12:1 compression (Or thereabouts, slightly lower due to thicker headgasket), 288 schrick, ported head with oversized valves with 40mm throttles etc etc and it made around 240hp at the wheels on Australia 98 octane fuel.
@@midnightzero2173 Thank you . Is your ecu stock bosch ?
@@oldman66 I'm using an ECUMaster classic.
@@midnightzero2173 do you have 1/4 mile time?
I ran Molnar 135mm H-beam rods. Best bang for the buck in my opinion. Comes with ARP bolts as well. I got 86mm wisco pistons from metric mechanic. They have massive valve relives so now it's a non-interference piston. I was lucky to find a euro m52b28 crank. Has the smallest counter weights and this weighs less. It has an 86mm throw.
It's a stout motor and hauls hard. Running megasquirt with a fully custom new harness. This has so far been the biggest challenge. Lots to go over and sort out with tuning and de-bugging.
Its expensive, a great motor to learn on, and has a great final feel. It's certainly more special then a swap IMO. Just be prepared to pay a lot more then a m52b28 swap for similar power results
What ratio diff are you running Sir??
4:1
Can you rebuild my m20 for me?
Yes but it’s not a cheap engine to do, especially if your looking for upgrades
@@PenguinMotors I want it pretty much standard. Maybe upgrade cam, bigger throttle body.. and all looking brand new . Approx how much would it cost?
