I like that there’s actually meaning behind the level and it's not just "hard level that looks cool." Not that every level needs to have some deeper meaning, I just think this level pulled it off really well
Something I think is cool is how the difficulty of this level is a big part of why it makes it so cool, there's a lot of levels in the top 150 where you can nerf and you don't lose much of the level itself, but Menace just feels like it couldn't be any easier than it is, it's meant to be hard and if it becomes any easier than it loses a lot as opposed to all other levels, if you get what I mean??? I also believe this level deserved Legendary because of the amount of effort and passion put into it, you made the song, poem, and entire level all on your own with deep thought behind all of it. Menace is my favorite top demon and I don't see that changing, incredible work!
7:43 This humility towards one's own belief, and tolerance towards others, is the single most admirable aspect of Menace imo. And that's really saying something, because I could glaze the deco and song all day if I wanted to.
this is the level that started a chain of events that led to me lending my friend money so he could buy thigh highs and wear them to school. Good times.
i thought knew of the meaning before this, i thought i knew it was a fall in morality due to some hints. it's fucking awesome that you're not generic and it has a good theme
for a while I never noticed the poem, but when I finally did I thought “wow! that’s really intelligent, i wonder who he quoted.” that’s so cool that you wrote it yourself!
I’m genuinely floored by your thought process in constructing this level. I myself have always found struggle and dissatisfaction in the search for some form of objective basis of morality, a search that always led to a dead end. It’s a sort of insanity that the truth drives me into, the truth ironically being that there is no other truth. Especially in my case as someone who was religious in the past, it’s a sinking feeling to deal with the idea that “we are meaningless, and there is no absolute morality nor meaning to morality.” I feel like this level perfectly represents that desperate search and downwards spiral into losing sanity that is the search for morality without deity. Usually I do the wherewin thing of being at a distaste for levels that rely on text for whatever story or meaning it contains, and instead looking for the way the level inherently represents its meaning. In this case however I feel like the text/poem (I would also not consider it a poem) just provides context for what the level already does well at portraying the emotional aspects of. The man in the background and the bright lights provoke a sense of humanity, divinity, morality, which as the man dissolves into something that is not-man, progresses into an intense nine circles ahh orange thingy that makes me feel like I’m going insane on drugs. The music also delivers; the way the chord progression starts in minor iv and ALSO ends in minor iv emphasizes that idea of beginning in dissatisfaction and remaining dissatisfied. And, that is what this level is describing for me, a search for truth but ultimately failing again and again. It really shows how worth it was for you to compose the music yourself, especially with a level this complex. The second drop is always a hitter for me; The spiral is so creative both in its inherent self and in the way it represents the inward spiral of insanity, and it goes really well with the intense and“wobbly” music. I actually didn’t notice the “thing” in the background until I did a practice run of the level, but it fits really fell and again to me it represents that unrecognizable blob that it feels like we become when we realize the meaninglessness of ourselves. Although I did find the gameplay of this second half of the second drop a little underwhelming. Especially the very end, as I find that the last obstacle of a level is very important so an abrupt ending at some spider orbs felt kind of odd or weak. Otherwise, in general the level feels so well thought out, and it’s almost mindblowing to hear that there was indeed intentionality in the way I interpreted each detail, or maybe the way I was driven to interpret. Maybe it’s just because my interests lie so heavily in philosophy, music, atmospheric art and unconventional storytelling, but this is genuinely one of my favorite levels of all time, up there with other masterpieces like Lonely Travel, Nhelv, kodak moment, etc. It definitely feels the most meaningful out of all in my opinion, and it was great to hear your insights/thoughts on your process of creating the level and your intentions behind it. Thank you for constructing this absolute banger of a level!!
When I first saw this level I was like “finally a unique extreme demon” now watching this video I’m like “this level has more to it than I thought” cool level dude =)
This is insane, how can someone represent it's thoughts in a gd level? And not only that, how can someone do it in such an amazing way? Once again, amazing job Manny, i like to know that my favorite level has a whole backstory
This is straight up my favorite level in the game, gameplay, deco, music and meaning included. I would really love to be skilled enough to beat it, maybe someday...

I am a philosopher and since many years I was interested in Truth, but two years ago I started to actively pursuing it by methaphysics, the study of the nature of reality, I swore I would believe in anything if it was true. I thought nihilism was absolutely true, and I suffered too much because of that, but then I for many months I was realizing I was wrong the more I was investigating (the trigger was realizing that consciousness isnt an emergent property of the brain but the fundamental substance that permeates the entire reality) the more fantastical it was becoming. I had a spiritual transformation because of my own conclusions, became a much better and more sensitive person and my mental health has vastly improved. I realized that the world is perfect and Love is everything, we are Truth itself. Yesterday I realized that Truth isnt objective or subjective, it is the integration of both, it is transcendental. I am not as interested in pursuing Truth anymore because I realized it is a massive rabbit hole, but I wanna finish my philosophical system, I love building it and fall in love with every new idea, how everything comes together, it is perfectly harmonious and rich. I am even discovering new ways of psychoterapy now. Don be afraid of Truth, Truth is moral perfection, full of meaning and supreme Good. The world is colossally much more gorgeous than what we were being taught.
Thank you for being a person with deep thoughts, one of the things I want the most is to listen to interesting people who share their thougths. Wish we weren't as few.
the poem was actually the part of the level that stood out the most to me, and not once did I think it felt contradictory or confusing. Perhaps it is because I share similar beliefs, but it spoke out to me and I was able to grasp what you were getting at immediately. This is a poem I would have written in another life (besides the menace line)
I really like this level and your explanation of it, it reminds me of some lyrics by David Bowie. “Don’t believe in yourself, Don’t deceive with belief, Knowledge comes with death’s release. “
This level has a very deep meaning, but the coolest part is that you managed to portray it so well - even being able to create something that represents so much at all would be amazing. This level is absolutely perfect in every way and I think that it should be legendary or even mythic.
Love how there’s big philosophical questions and emotion being expressed through gd. This is the type of shit that makes game so meaningful to me. it’s an art form and being around for over 10 years now allows me to appreciate how far we’ve come as a community and connect with the experiences of the creator as expressed through their works. Incredible stuff
I think that the poem being contradictory really encapsulates the search for meaning. Regardless of how its interpreted, I really enjoy that you are bringing philosophy to the masses, even if it's just 9 year old GD players lol. Amazing creativity, song, effort, deco, gameplay - everything. There's nothing else like it and your effort is greatly appreciated.
That's why you're my fav gd creator. I like your way of expressing your thoughts through your songs, levels, poems... You're just fantasitic ! Love the subject also.. Bangerrr
I tried to give meanings for my levels too, I'm honestly really glad that there is a well known figure who thinks like me. A lot of people do not think about artistic intentions, so thank you for making this video.
this is - easily - my favorite level in the demon list, and one of my favorite levels in general. thank you so much for this inspiring level, and i hope to make as abstract decoration/meaning as you.
I really love how in depth this poem goes. After watching this video, I built a whole theory/interpretation of the lore behind Menace. What got me thinking the most in this video was your quote "There is no absolute truth = a truth, therefore it is a paradox", which literally blew my mind!! This then made me think about how in the beginning, the character goes from going up the stairs to being flipped upside down and going down the stairs, and then later in the level when he says that his belief is "one of a menace" (basically calling himself a menace), the icon splits into a dual, as if the paradoxical nature of his belief is simultaneously helping him discover the truth, whilst also having that discovery actively destroy him. He is a menace because he is good and bad, right and wrong, and therefore through his discovery of what truth is and isn't, he himself becomes it. A man who has gone so far down the depths of truth that he incarnates it within himself would be seen as a deity, therefore breaking the cycle of denying the existence of the divine by filling up the lack of divinity with his own existence. THAT is a menace; one who denies truth so much that he comes back around to discovering that the only truth that exists is the one within, making him all powerful, yet ultimately meaningless. Honestly one of my favorite levels of all time, kudos to you for your extensive amount of work behind this project. Trust me, it truly paid off.
The level, when I saw it for the first time, reminded me a lot of Albert Camus novel The Stranger. The strong rejection of Divinity and that feeling of losing humanity is definitely a theme of The Stranger. I really enjoyed the level
Bro I did not realize how deep this level goes, this story is probably my top 2 story on every level at least, whymewhymewhyme and white space are the only levels to keep that up
Thank you for this Manny! Not many pieces of media manage to hold themselves in my thoughts for as long as this level and its poem did. However, I'm still not feeling at ease with the explanation you gave here. I will definitely rethink my views on the poem after this.
I can't really put into words what this level makes me feel. It's bold, its beautiful, its rich with theming and decoration, that perfectly bounce of each other with the song. Most Geometry Dash levels don't really have a story, and the poem in Menace, not only going for a deep idea, but being in the level in the first place makes me appreciate the level even more for what it is. Definitely my top 3 favorite levels of this year, and my favorite creator of this year.
Though I don’t completely agree with ur atheistic/agnostic beliefs, I found this incredibly interesting to listen to to hear another perspective that I’m not necessarily surrounded by as much. I may disagree but it is no secret that you are gifted, intelligent, and that you have enormous potential and I can’t wait to see what your next big project will be down the road
Honestly ive always enjoyed levels that are quite vague in their meaning, like you know there is a meaning but youre not quite sure what it could be. Most levels that make me feel this way tend to not use any text, they just let the level speak for itself, which is the case for lets say congregation, ballistic wistfully or legalize nuclea bomb, but some levels that have text also make me feel like this, because the text is very vague, it sort of leads you towards the right path when thinking about what it would be about, but it still leaves a lot of room for interpretation. Levels like that have become some of my favorite ones of all time, your level menace, minus 15327 degrees and our fountain are my first thought when i think of a level that invoques an emotion in me. After having analyzed why those levels work so well for so long, i've realized that a lot of it just comes down to connecting with the level, some creators will try to make their levels have a very specific theme, story, which leaves a lot less to think about. This is one of the reasons levels like change of scene, waterfall, ispywithmylittleeye and rage quit have never really connected with me, they are just happening and you're just watching it, you dont feel like youre in the level, you dont feel anything, youre just like "oh that's cool" and then you move on. But more vague levels don't have a specific theme, they leave you with more questions than answers, and so you think about them a lot more, you think about what it could mean, what the creator was thinking when they were making it, and you develop your own answers to those questions. The creator doesn't even need to write a good story or anything, because youre naturally going to connect with it if youre writing the story yourself.
this is the level that started a chain of events that led me to build a Caravan Palace layout with the help of the legendary Manny himself. Good man that Manny is!
We can't prove anything's true. There may not be a God. There may be one God. There may be hundreds of Gods. I try to respect all people regardless of religion, beliefs, etc. because, at the end of the day, there's no way to know the right answer.
Gonna say that all of mannyheffley's gameplays are such unique. They use ordinary mechanics, but when i watch menace or adelucid i just think "it is beautiful and easy to make, why the hell didnt i made this?" Its like, i mostly understand how it works, but when I try to build smth, i havent so much ideas
Not religious in the slightest, but it’s always interesting seeing others discuss their own beliefs, and how they interoperate that into their passions, or even life as whole.
this is the level that started a chain of events that led to me lending my friend money so he could lend money to someone so that they could buy thigh highs and wear them to school. goated level.
i found the quotes included in the level intresting. i barely see players talk about them but i forgot. but it kept me thinking. i dont think you did bad, but it might be offensive, but personally, it sounded like this level was made in your passion, and also in your idea of sharing your thoughts and representations
Susan: Okay guys, Time to head to church! Manny: great level btw, probably my favorite top demon currently. now that ive learned more about the level itself and the message behind it, i like it even more. 👍
ALSO if you like meaning like this (clearly you do) listen to the 47 minute piece of music Catch Thirty Three by Meshuggah. You’ll really enjoy the lyrics and if you’re capable of understanding large ideas in musical composition you’ll very much enjoy it. It is metal though. So give it a few listens :)
It's funny how I watched a network by VanDerVals Showcase right before this video and one the soundtracks used in this video was the one used in the level, what a coincidence
Greg: everyone hates me and my life is meaningless

Not religious in the slightest, but it’s always interesting seeing others discuss their own beliefs, and how they interoperate that into their passions, or even life as whole.
finally i understand what the actual heck is that text and the man in menace thank you
this is the level that started a chain of events that led to me lending my friend money so he could lend money to someone so that they could buy thigh highs and wear them to school. goated level.
incredible video for an incredible level (by far my favourite lvl of all time lol)
Keep in mind there is a reason as to Why its so well recieved. And also getting insight into the meaning behind it, makes it so Much better
This is the reason this is my favorite level.
i found the quotes included in the level intresting. i barely see players talk about them but i forgot. but it kept me thinking. i dont think you did bad, but it might be offensive, but personally, it sounded like this level was made in your passion, and also in your idea of sharing your thoughts and representations
Gregory could never 🙏
Using GD as more than a video game and also as an art form is really inspiring
i relate to this message way too much
there were multiple times throughout this video when you said something and i went to check if i already liked the video or not. double likes when
One of a menace (grewt video as always i respect your beliefs Manuel Heffley)
Susan: Okay guys, Time to head to church!
Manny:
great level btw, probably my favorite top demon currently. now that ive learned more about the level itself and the message behind it, i like it even more.
Damnn, it's literally an art
The one absolute truth is that Manny is goated
Good to know you named a level after yourself, Manny.
i really love when creators inject meaning into their works, thanks for being a menace
i am muslim thank you for this advice
".. menace leans towards the good" - nobody ever
i dont exist

This is a good backstory
Thank you manny for inspiring my username
bro i was gonna do a poem analysis on menace for school earlier this year.
But then I didn't because i forgot.
It's funny how I watched a network by VanDerVals Showcase right before this video and one the soundtracks used in this video was the one used in the level, what a coincidence
Probably one of the most meticulous levels to ever grace GD
Gotta dl this before it gets taken down like neltharion's lament vid
3rd best level on the demonlist, IMO
STOP PLAYING THE HOOD IRONY GIF LOL
