I do not own a fiero, always found the car interesting. However, I am not a big fan of the big three cars in general. After watching these videos I decided buy my first fiero. Thanks, I cannot believe that gm discontinued such an amazing little car. I would love to see the conclusion of this project, I cannot find the other videos that put the engine into the car. I find the supercharged engine interesting. Thanks for getting me excited about the fiero.
+daniel yel Awesome! I'm glad that I could sway you to the dark side ;) I think Fiero's are an under appreciated car with lots of potential. Jalopnik wrote a very cool article on the history of the Fiero from when it was born to when it was killed off that might give you a better understanding of the politics involved in it's demise and why GM wouldn't allow a more powerful engine or handling option. You can do a lot with a Fiero. I was in the same boat as you when it came to looking for swap engine videos. I put off doing a 3800 swap for years because I wasn't sure if it was to complicated. I would always search for videos in hopes that somebody would post something I could see. After years of research and waiting I figured I'd step up to the plate. I'll post my how-to build on my very first swap so that others can follow along. Hopefully I can show others that they can do it too. Lemme know if you do get a Fiero and if you ever have any questions. Fiero's are cheap and 3800 engines are cheap. When you put the two together you get a respectably fast car for a lot less than what others pay for theirs. One video I like to show people is RUclips user L67Fiero has a 3800 (turbo) Fiero that races against an E85 GTR and holds his own until the Fiero tops out. His other videos shows his car blowing the doors off of everything else that he races. In the case of the GTR he probably only spent a 10th of what that GTR cost to have a car almost as fast. Here is his video:ruclips.net/video/lSAT6lNpnI8/видео.html
Nice job...! I referred to your 3.4 video when I did that swap, and now I'm going to use this one to help me to make sure I don't forget anything and keep me going in the right direction. I already am this far ahead of your video, except for the belt, but I really enjoyed it and was able to confirm that I did everything right. I suggest that you show how to plug the LIM and timing cover coolant holes with a 7/8" and 1" soft plug, then use a modified Fiero stat housing to replace the 3800 one, and run the heater hose and coolant hose off of that connection. BTW...I'm swapping a Bonneville SSCi 3800sc with 100k on it. Except for the oil filter adapter, everything else makes for an easy swap prep. I'm going to follow your other 3800 swap videos to complete mine, so thanks for providing such a good how-to video...!
Sorry for the delay in New videos. It's been a tough couple of months. In May I got laid off from my job and don't ya know a week later my computer crashed. I had 4 videos ready to upload to RUclips and another was half edited. The edited videos are gone but the raw footage is fine because I keep it on a separate drive. So now I have to start all over in editing them all. I got a new harddrive and reinstalled Windows 7, then decided to try the free Windows 10 upgrade. Kinda regret that now. I was originally using Pinnacle Studio 15 to edit the videos but now I got Studio 19 which is WAY different so I had to re-learn it. I have the Fiero 3800 lower intake gasket replacemt video edited but for some reason after about a half hour of rendering, Studio 19 crashes and I only get about 3 minutes of video rendered. That on top of trying to find a new job has slowed me down a ton. I may end up trying to call Pinnacle support sometime to figure it out. Hopefully I'll get videos posted soon. Thanks for checking in and I hope to be back on track again soon. This is such a fun project and I enjoy sharing it with everyone. New videos posted will be slightly different because features I used in Studio 15 are not available in Studio 19. Thanks again for checking in. I'll try and work on the video tonight and see if I can actually work out the render issues.

Sure wish I had known about this video before I installed my Roger Peter's belts, because my engine came out of an '03 Bonneville, and I was unaware that I had to use the cast iron SC idler and tensioner pulley set-up.
These videos are great. I have an 87 GT that's getting this swap and I'm learning sooo much by watching. I've learned more watching your videos than I have in a month of trying to piece things together online. Youre the man. Do you not need to strengthen the cradle?
That's a 97-98 L67 not 99. In 97 and 98 the alternator bracket/tensioner piece had a cast lower coolant elbow. They changed it over to a plastic elbow in 99. The older cast elbow would break or easily crack the side cover when removing to replace the plastic upper elbow that often failed. Good thing you didn't break yours using that crow bar.
while changing water pump;change crank sensor remove harmonic balancer to get access.you can rent the balancer puller from auto part store such as auto zone.
Good video, although one thing. I'm no 3800 expert, but I do know a thing or two about them. And you should have used thread sealant on the 13mm W/P bolts as they will weep coolant over time if they have nothing on them.
Subway Guy I am glad someone mentioned this to you. A couple of those 13mm bolts go into the coolant galleries and need to have a thread sealant coating on them. I'd go back and do it now so you don't end up with a leak shortly after installing and running the engine. I just finished a cam and lifter change on my L67 (Australian version) engine with RWD.
+JohnWPB Thank you John!!! I'm a little late posting the next one so I gotta make myself get it up this weekend. I also enjoy reading up on your PFF build thread. You definitely have a WAY more active thread than I do so I'll be keeping up on your build too ;)
I found that when I installed my front motor mount bracket, that I had to buy three new A/C bracket bolts 1/4" longer to make sure I got enough holding thread depth, as both brackets use the same bolts. Since the motor mount bracket is 1/4" thick, I then had to add two 1/8" washers to fill the space left under the last A/C bracket bolt, where the motor mount bracket does not reach. You will have to do the same I think.
I have a 87 GT...getting ready to start restoring it...looking to put the grand prix 05 series 3 in...would the series 3 work...also, what about trans...want to keep the 5spd...would the 5spd that's in it work...if not what standard shift to get.
You can use the stock 5 speed Getrag from the 2.8 Fiero for the 3800. You just can't do burnouts. The general consensus is that once the wheels are turning you can get on it as much a you want but burnouts snap the gears. Another option is the F23 5 speed. It can take the extra abuse.
Thanks for checking in, not finished yet. I was laid off last spring which put the brakes on the project and videos. I was in the middle of two Fiero engine swaps at the time and my garage was really congested. I barely had room to work let alone place a camera and a light in there. I'm back at it and almost finished a 3.4 swap now and once I get that Fiero out of the garage I'll have the space to start up again and get the 3800 videos flowing. The next 3800 video will be a fuel rail & valve cover conversion. Mostly edited and just have to film a few more parts. Then a misc parts install video which is mostly edited but I want to post the fuel rail video first. Then installing the engine onto the transmission. That one is edited but I need to film an intro and then it will be in line to post after the fuel rail and misc install videos. After that the videos will be caught up to where I'm actually at and I will have to film the next segments.
When you buy a salvage engine they sometimes come with a warranty so you have a chance to confirm it runs. I bought mine and took it to an engine shop where they gave it a look over and did a leakdown test. The cost of an engine really depends on the area you live in and the condition of the engine. I thought I got a good deal paying $600 but some people say they get them for about $450. Others will pay closer to $1,000. As I mentioned I paid $600 for mine and it has 53k miles on it. Shop around your area and see what they are going for and what fits your budget. I wanted one that was in good shape so I didn't have to put a lot into it. This is my budget build to see if I can do it. Once I get this in and running I'll work on building up a more powerful engine to swap in.
He does still make these brackets. Feel free to email him anytime with questions or to place an order. Let him know that you saw the install video using his brackets on RUclips. It's always good to let him know that the videos were helpful.

I am in the process to swap the engine to a 3.8 from a Buick Park Av I got the Rog Braket also I got the pulley but I miss one form you video the one to the left you show the one from the left above the alternator you said that it is a ford 1995 3.8 but for the one in the right you do not specify from which vehicle you get it nf I have not clue If you can or some one can tell me which re the model so I can finish my pulley project and move to the next step . Thank you
Christopher Earl The lower intake manifold gasket is prone to fail. GM used a plastic gasket the becomes brittle and fail. Fel-Pro makes a metal gasket to correct the issue. It's good to change that gasket before swapping in the engine. I have a video on changing the gasket too.
Hey, another great video! Your water pump looked gross, hopefully it doesn't cause any future issues. I own a 2000GTP and had a recall done on my car recently. They changed the front valve cover gasket because of a leak. Apparently that is a rather normal thing for these engines. I'd highly recommend putting new valve cover gaskets on both sides, and the oil pan gasket as well. Are you going to be painting the engine?
+zzzhuh Yeah I had some concerns about the water pump too. I'm sure that if I didn't change it out and never discovered the gunk it probably would have over heated the engine rather quickly or pushed that gunk throughout the cooling system. I did do the valve cover gaskets back in March. That video is tied in with the custom fuel rail swap video. I'm still waiting to get that fuel rail in so I can finish filming the video and get it posted. At some point you'll see that video post. The next video I'll be posting this weekend will be replacing the lower intake gasket which is another highly prone-to-fail part. I haven't done the oil pan gasket so I'll have to add that to the list, thanks! I wasn't planning on painting the engine because since it's my first build I wanted to make it more of a budget build. That way if I fail I'm not out a ton more money than I already am. However I do feel like I should have painted the valve covers and supercharger now. Originally I wasn't planning on removing those parts so I never bought any paint for them. Then people told me about the leak issues and I ended up pulling them anyway. Maybe sometime in the future I'll pull them off and paint them.
Tyler Liegey Yep. You can use any year Fiero. If you are going to have an automatic transmission then you'll want to pick up a 4t65e-HD transmission. The stock Fiero auto transmission can't handle the torque of the supercharged engine. If you have the V6 5 speed Fiero manual transmission you can use that or go with an F23 or F40 transmission which are more reliable under heavy acceleration.
The oil filter bracket for the GTP was also used in the Buick Regal GS. Those are the ones you want because they will clear the Fiero engine craddle. There is a different adapter used in the Pomtiac Bonneville SSEi and Buick Park Avenue. Those would need to be swapped out.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. That video hasn't been posted yet. It was supposed to have been posted two weeks after this video but my computer crashed. I still have the footage but had to start all over with editing it. I will hopefully have the pulley and spark plug video re-edited and posted in a few days from now so check back soon. Thanks for your patience ;)
Hi Rafael, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You can email FieroRog for the brackets. His email is FieroRog@GMail.com. Let him know that you saw the video on RUclips using his brackets and were interested in a set. Good luck on your build. I've enjoyed working on mine!
The aluminum coil pack/SC pulley bracket used in my 2003 Bonneville will not work...won't fit in the Fiero engine bay. Must use the cast iron bracket, like out of a Grand Prix and others like them, and cut off the dog bone bracket part. Same with the oil filter adapter...Bonneville won't work...must use the Grand Prix style.
I have pontiac fiero automatic1984. I do swap 1998 v6 3800 gran prix engine i do aceleretion cables i need fiero automatic transmission cables pontiact granprix transmission
which freeze plugs did you use for the LIM and pump? I thought I saw it in one of your videos but I cant find it. If Im not mistaken they were Dorman? Thanks in advance and keep up the good work
David Carr I used a freeze plug to cap the water pump. That part number can be found in the video Fiero 3000 How To: Installing the Oil Pressure Sending Unit, Thermostat & Plugging the Water Pump. I didn't plug the LIM because I heard that cause issues with the supercharger not being able to circulate the heat out. I used mine to run the heater core. That hookup can be found in the video Fiero 3800 How to: Hooking Up Fuel Lines, Vacuum/AC Lines and Hoses. Let me know if you have any other questions.
The coolant return line is attached to the passenger side metal coolant tube that runs to the front of the car. Right near where the engine's rubber hose is connected there is a smaller hose that attached to an offshoot line.
Hey David; I just spent a few weeks ordering miscellaneous freeze plugs until I got one that worked. I'm not too concerned about supercharger heat since I have a phenolic intercooler. The plug in the manifold and in the timing cover are two different sizes - I believe 7/8" and 15/16", the larger one in the cover and smaller one in the manifold. The one in the manifold is a little difficult to hammer in there. Dorman sells plugs of different sizes, part number 555-01x. I think -016 and -017 are the correct sizes, but double-check before ordering.
Yeah that would work fine. You would need to swap out the coil pack/dog bone bracket and the oil filter adapter for one from a GTP or Regal GS. Those parts fit better in the Fiero. If possible also try and get the trans, a less, harness and PCM if possible.
Tyler Liegey Yes, these were made by FieroRog who is well respected for the quality of his brackets. A good portion of the 3800 Fiero's out there are using his brackets. There is a link in the RUclips description to his PFF thread where you can request a set or his email can be found in the beginning of my video. I would definitely recommend his kit to anyone.
Yes, I'm not a welder so I rely on the craftsmanship of other Fiero enthusiasts to create the custom parts needed to make this work. If you contact FieroRog let him know that you saw his parts on my RUclips video. He's a great guy to talk to and deal with so I want to try and help drive business his way so he'll keep making these kits.
What kind of price range in total am I looking at to do this engine swap? I currently have an 88GT 5 speed. All stock. Want to keep the manual transmission. Total cost for a used 3.8 SC engine, the brackets, mounts, adapters, wiring harness, ECU, etc.
That's a very good question. One I've asked a lot before starting mine and the price range I've heard was usually between $3,000-$4,500. Right now I'm in it $4,900 and still have a few more things to pick up. There are A LOT of things that create a variance in your cost. How much are you able to buy and engine for is a big one. I paid $600 for mine but also had to buy a new alternator, AC compressor, water pump, tensioner pulley, lower intake gasket, flexplate and other misc brackets & bolts. That was just to make the engine run and nothing to do with the conversion or upgrades. To date the FieroRog brackets are $425 and I paid $750 for a new custom wiring harness. Those three things along put me at $1,775 and that does't include the extras I mentioned. I paid $350 for an auto trans but you'll pay more for the manual trans because even though you already have it you will need custom shift cables, flywheel and clutch made. It's a great project and fun to work on. My suggestion is check out my PFF build thread and see what I'm buying and what I paid. When I'm done my videos my last one will be a 3800 Q&A on my experience and in the text will list everything I bought with prices and links. Hopefully my videos, when all put together, will be the most helpful tool in building a 3800 Fiero and finding parts anywhere.
Great. I bought a 2000 Buick Regal GS and drove it home for $900. So I have the complete engine, and ecu and wiring harness. I've pulled engine. And got to order motor mount brackets to put the engine on the Fiero subframe. I plan to make my own wiring harness then have the ECU flashed. So far I'm only into it about $2100 including the car.
I do not own a fiero, always found the car interesting. However, I am not a big fan of the big three cars in general. After watching these videos I decided buy my first fiero.

+Fiero86CL Your very welcome!! I try my best to contribute to the Fiero community in my own little way. Gotta keep those Fiero's alive ;)
I like it at 11:30. A chili cooled motor. That’s the first for me I’m doing a series’s 3
Great videos! Getting ready to disconnect my 2.8 tomorrow...

Where did you get your front battery swap kit, and how much...?
how much roughly is it for the mounts and brackets do you have a video about the computer
Man where u located these guys out hear giving me the rum around
I you lived closer to me I would help you out when not working.
Where did you get the custom harness? Or did you make it if so could you please post a video of it.

Pete Hunter the series 3 would Work but you would need to get a throttle body adapter from ZZP so you could put a series 2 throttle body on it

So how important is a torque wrench for bolting on these parts? I didn't see you use one. Why? or why not?
What belt did you use with the 3.4 supercharged pully
Did you ever finish it? If you did is there an install video?
Thanks for checking in, not finished yet. I was laid off last spring which put the brakes on the project and videos.
Nice video!!!!! Question I have is how do you know if the 3800 will fire up ? And if you don't mind what's the average cost of a used motor??
Once I get this in and running I'll work on building up a more powerful engine to swap in.
does he still make these brackets? I might have to order these for later
He does still make these brackets. Feel free to email him anytime with questions or to place an order. Let him know that you saw the install video using his brackets on RUclips. It's always good to let him know that the videos were helpful.

I am in the process to swap the engine to a 3.8 from a Buick Park Av I got the Rog Braket also I got the pulley but I miss one form you video the one to the left you show the one from the left above the alternator you said that it is a ford 1995 3.8 but for the one in the right you do not specify from which vehicle you get it nf I have not clue
If you can or some one can tell me which re the model so I can finish my pulley project and move to the next step . Thank you
i believe the one on the right is from the buick 3800 if that helps
I am going to look at a fiero with the L67 swap in a few days does anyone know of any common problems with these that i should be wary of?
Christopher Earl The lower intake manifold gasket is prone to fail. GM used a plastic gasket the becomes brittle and fail. Fel-Pro makes a metal gasket to correct the issue. It's good to change that gasket before swapping in the engine. I have a video on changing the gasket too.
I need a coil bracket. I have the flat one, I need the one that's more of an angle.
Maybe sometime in the future I'll pull them off and paint them.
can i do this to a 86 fiero se with the 2.8 v6 and what transmission did u use for the build
Is that the right oil filter bracket? I have the same one and my buddy was telling me to get the gtp one..
The oil filter bracket for the GTP was also used in the Buick Regal GS. Those are the ones you want because they will clear the Fiero engine craddle. There is a different adapter used in the Pomtiac Bonneville SSEi and Buick Park Avenue. Those would need to be swapped out.
Can't find the 3.4 pulley and spark plugs video
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. That video hasn't been posted yet. It was supposed to have been posted two weeks after this video but my computer crashed. I still have the footage but had to start all over with editing it. I will hopefully have the pulley and spark plug video re-edited and posted in a few days from now so check back soon. Thanks for your patience ;)
did you end up swapping the coolant elbows ?
Also get rid of the plastic idler pully
coil pack/dog bone mount/pulley bracket
Hi guys my name is Raphael where can I get those brackets for the engine
Hi Rafael, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. You can email FieroRog for the brackets. His email is FieroRog@GMail.com. Let him know that you saw the video on RUclips using his brackets and were interested in a set. Good luck on your build. I've enjoyed working on mine!
The aluminum coil pack/SC pulley bracket used in my 2003 Bonneville will not work...won't fit in the Fiero engine bay. Must use the cast iron bracket, like out of a Grand Prix and others like them, and cut off the dog bone bracket part. Same with the oil filter adapter...Bonneville won't work...must use the Grand Prix style.
wow...thank you..i have a 87 fastback...and i will kill my bonneville 97 supercharged 95milles.to put in my gt😃😁 next year
how do we order fiero rog parts in the year 2017?
Thanks for the reply. I saw how you secured the aluminum elbow to the LIM but where does the heater core return line plug into?
I think -016 and -017 are the correct sizes, but double-check before ordering.
what year fiero are you doing this to
Tyler Liegey This is going into an 87 GT.
Would a 3.8 from a 03 bonneville work
Yeah that would work fine. You would need to swap out the coil pack/dog bone bracket and the oil filter adapter for one from a GTP or Regal GS. Those parts fit better in the Fiero. If possible also try and get the trans, a less, harness and PCM if possible.
and you had all these motor mounts built
Hopefully my videos, when all put together, will be the most helpful tool in building a 3800 Fiero and finding parts anywhere.
i recently acquired an 85 4 cyl. it drives fine for now but should the 4 fail, how much would it be to do it?
So far I'm only into it about $2100 including the car.

i can not email a google ghost?
You should flush the cooling system out before you start your 3800sc for the first time.
Man thinks hes kewl in shades, and flat brim hat, uķ uh!
Hi guys my name is Raphael where can I get those brackets for the engine

hey Raphael is there a reason you posted the exact same question 3 times?
