I remember the pop-off body panels were actually an advertising/selling point when the cars were new. Saying the owner could up-grade the looks every few years to keep the car's styling looking fresh and new.
Commenting at the start.. This will be good.. Fieros are a riot...And I personally think the late models looked amazing... Toss a 3800SC in one and you have a lil rocket
That's crazy! I thought the Zimmer was built on the Ford/Mercury chassis and some of the curvy Mercury Cougar body particularly the 'sedan' style back half, as opposed to the Thunderbird's swoopy body. Never knew it was based on a mid-engine Fiero.
You're not completely wrong LOL there were many cars like that made on the Mercury cougar chassis, usually keeping the same door , windows and upright rear roof/ window but grafting on a long Hood with big round headlight treatment looking like a 30s car. Zimmer did sell these as well under the name Golden Spirit , if you search for Zimmer cars you will see many of them made on the much larger more comfortable cougar platform that comes with a plush comfortable interior and a back seat that the fiero interior lacks. Plus a trunk. Lol You also can find other similar cars that use the cougar as the donor, such as the Tiffany.
The "spaceframe" of the Fiero is not have aluminum. I have a few including a 3800sc swapped one. They're fun and can still be had for cheap. #fierojesus
Ah, my mistake for calling it aluminum, I misread somewhere. Thank you for the correction, and very cool! The 3800sc swaps always seemed like a lot of fun. Recently I found an interesting one that had the 2.8L bored out to ~3.1L. Never know what you'll find with a Fiero it seems.
That two plus two prototype is owned by Fred Bartemeyer. I got to see it and meet him at the 40th anniversary event in Pontiac Michigan in July of '23.
I've been around kit cars my entire life and with Fieros entering the collector car market a lot of these well done kits are being bought by people who could afford a real countach just a few years ago but now that's becoming a seven figure car most people are gonna be looking at these kits as alternatives
Also the first year fiero had the main wiring harness too close to the exhaust manifold therefore causing the fire, something GM had recalls for to relocate the harness to avoid fires I was working at a shop that specialized in "fiero conversions" at the time, that's how I learned about this
@jerryjones2818 Congrats on not watching the video. The Fiero is not a kit car, and I never claimed it to be. This video also covers the topics of the Mera Fiero and Zimmer Quicksilver, which I make some arguments for not being kit cars also. A segment of the video is, however dedicated to the various bodykits available for the Fiero and the variety of custom fake Ferraris and Lambos that Fieros get turned into, i.e. kit cars. 👍

Ha, That was a fun vid. Thanks. Fiero's rule!
Thanks for watching! And yah they're fun to drive, I'm always considering getting back in one someday!
Great video, I learned a lot. Lot of good information.

I recently saw a Lambo Countach that was done on a 1988 Fiero. It was nice, very well done, and looked close enough to fool some people....
btw the fires were caused by people not properly maintaining their engines oil and letting it run dry
Also the first year fiero had the main wiring harness too close to the exhaust manifold therefore causing the fire, something GM had recalls for to relocate the harness to avoid fires

@@MrChopp3r oh damn, didnt know that. the v6 engines get quite toasty, good to know!
Wrong.
The Fantastic Plastic!
Hah! Pretty cool! I think the Aldino was also loosely based on a Ferrari. Maybe an F40? But there were some truly fugly kits out there, too. #Raydar
💯👍
Great video. However, the fiero is not made of fiberglass the panels are SMC, plastic
Ah yah, my mistake! Thank you for the correction!
@@velocemidwest the technology used to develop the fiero panels was later passed down to Saturn aswell
So who did the Miura kit car, please?

Here's a link to the build thread on the Pennock Fiero forum
Sh yes. The American MR2!
I only got to "space age ALUMINIUM frame" and I was done. Jeez!
What are you calling kit cars? The fiero was not sold as a kit. Althouggh many wish it were.
