He was nothing short of phenomenal, just as was his son. Anyway, just as I've never heard anyone sing Dylan better than Dylan, so it is I never thought anyone could sing "Hallelujah" better than the author, but Rufus and Jeff changed my mind. Two separate artists, two different styles, both give me goose pimples.
This was the first version I ever heard of this song, and after hearing all the others including the original I think this that Wainwright does it justice.
My interpretation of the song is this: It's a song about heartbreak. No matter how painful, emotionally draining and powerless we feel, any love is still better than no love at all. "She broke your throne and she cut your hair, and from your lips she drew the 'Hallelujah'"
