[671] The Slowlane is the rather unfortunate name for a fast cycle route in Eindhoven in the Netherlands. More information in the blog post: bicycledutch.w...
if the world has to learn from the Dutch is this bike lane management, no other country on earth can match this. I am not dutch btw, but I admire what they do with the biking culture. Love it so much.

Your cities are so beautiful! I'm full with joy every time one of this videos is loaded and also so sad to be so old and poor to ever travel there... it's wonderful to see places in the world changing to a more friendly and intelligent environment within the cities.
Changing ? The Dutch are riding bikes since the bike was invented. But things really got going in the late 60's / early 70's. This a nice video from this channel to see how it all started: ruclips.net/video/XuBdf9jYj7o/видео.html
We and the Danes are now slowly making Northwest Germany nice too. We've got them in a pincher. Munster and Bremen have fallen a long time ago and in Dusseldorf there are just some snipers left who are being dealt with (www1.wdr.de/nachrichten/rheinland/duesseldorf-cdu-hartnigk-parkgebuehren-fahrraeder-rueckzug-100.html). In Hamburg (and many other cities) the offensive is going well (kursfahrradstadt.wordpress.com/kurs-fahrradstadt-faq/). After that the rest of Germany will follow. The Germans will then convince themselves that it was all their idea to begin with and it will get exported all over the world through an urban planning blitzkrieg. You salvation is at hand!
I didn't know pedestrians had priority on that one crossing, I always stop for the cyclists. Either way, it usually seems less of a priority thing and more of a 'everyone kinda slows down or speeds up and people miraculously don't hit another' kinda thing
Peter Knot the change in road surface height means you must yield to pedestrians, despite the sign not having that meaning. This is, of course, a balancing act. Most of the time you end up avoiding each other without either party slowing down much, or simply the person who arrives first taking priority.
Good to see that Eindhoven invests in a more liveable city where cycling plays a prominent role. Eindhoven has primarily developed after WOII because of DAF and Philips, so the city is quite car-based. One of the car routes towards the city centre (Vestdijk) is also currently being redesigned: one of the two car lane has to make way for a very wide cycle path.
i just asked my friend yesterday why the little lines are in an "s" shape at the part of the cycle path at the TUe and she didnt know either. suspicious that this video shows up in my recommended a day later though

Weird choice for a name for this lane which apart from the name seems perfectly suitable and nice. Having such a "bad" name I have a feeling some people might not like the route because the name makes the route feel inferior, very odd.
I cycle there every day, never knew the name before this video. Also the "s's" are depicted on the flag of Eindhoven, so not sure if they are meant to mean slowlane.
I didn't know it had a name until now. And it's not a very good name. I think something like "Dommelfietspad" or "Dommelroute" would be nicer because it describes how the route follows the river.
I don't remember the exact brand but it is one of the digital home video recorders. He just holds it with one hand and holds the handlebar with the other. I don't know if you know that he now has to use a 360 degree camera because in the Netherlands it is either going to be or it already is illegal to cycle whilst holding something such as a mobile phone? The handheld camera would be the equivalent of using a mobile phone. :')
Toch grappig, iets wat zo normaal is en wat ik dagelijks gebruik, getoond in zo'n video. Die oude man bij de middelbare school was mijn oude biologieleraar. It's funny to see such a familiar and normal place put on a pedestal in a video like this. That elderly man at the middle school was my old biology teacher.
Slow lane ruined my favorite bike path, the one next to the canal. It used to be down low next to the water and it was peaceful and quiet. Now it's high up and you hear the freeway most of the time.
There are 2: 1. Your body limits. I just can't go faster than 25 or 28 or so on my current bike because it is heavy to do so for extended time 2. You control: You still need to make the turns and stop at those few traffic lights. Good luck doing that if you were to go 100.
@@mennoltvanalten7260 In what unit, you measure those 25 or 28? My average speed is about 24, km/h or less, it depends of conditions.. On country road, downhill, it sometime still exceeds 60km/h also. I ride a cyclocross bike, that I have equiped with long mudguards and all other necessary for pleasant time on bike. I'm from Tartu, Estonia. I never been in Netherland, or to any country, with really good bicycling infrastructure. And probably I never go there, because I hate traveling. These videos are a good way for me to get know about bicycle roads in Netherlands. Here on our modest bicycle ways that we have . I often fail to chose appropriate speed. Our bicycle ways seems to be designed, to be dangerous on purpose. I would like some speed limits on some places. I would even not mind speed bumps, to wake me up, before reaching to children playground hidden behind bushes. We got this traffic law, that says that when bicycle road crosses a road, then cyclist who rides on bicycle road, must cross road on the speed of pedestrian.. by road I mean the road where cars ride. Why they made such law.. I guess, that I can't even guess. Or perhaps I should not, because I might get banned by RUclips, if I do guess. :D. I often chose to ride with cars instead of shared bicycle ways even when there's no pedestrians on those shared roads, because I don't like the crossings. Doesn't matter who has priority. I have to slow dow, but also all cars slow always down, even when they have priority they stop, because they are afraid of cyclists.. It's so nerves wrecking.. I really prefer to ride with carts, because there everything usually works as it needs. ^_^
@2:30 as I responded to the video from 30-11-2020, this is an old part. This works fine, 'because it has been like this for more than twenty years now: some people walking / biking there have literally grown up with the situation there.

I live there and never knew it was a slowlane lol, tbh I dont think anyone there knows its a slowlane
I've never heard of a slowlane. A cycle path is a cycle path.
exactly this lol I had no idea
@@sjoerdvelzen8255 ore a bicycle lane 🤣😂
Its just a name: The slowlane. Its not an indication for speed. Not the smartest name for a (bi)cycle path.
Het heet de slowlane omdat het parallel ligt aan de "fastlane" namelijk de autoweg. Fietsers zijn langzamer dan auto's.

I didn't know pedestrians had priority on that one crossing, I always stop for the cyclists. Either way, it usually seems less of a priority thing and more of a 'everyone kinda slows down or speeds up and people miraculously don't hit another' kinda thing
They actually don't. The upside triangle means you need to give way to other drivers. Pedestrians ≠ drivers.
Peter Knot the change in road surface height means you must yield to pedestrians, despite the sign not having that meaning.
This is, of course, a balancing act. Most of the time you end up avoiding each other without either party slowing down much, or simply the person who arrives first taking priority.

We are hoping to visit some family there this year, if travel is permitted. They always have a spare bike for me, I'm looking forward.
LOL @ "4 metre wide" - in the UK, 1 metre is considered sufficient for a bidirectional cycle path (which is shared with pedestrians}
Weird choice for a name for this lane which apart from the name seems perfectly suitable and nice. Having such a "bad" name I have a feeling some people might not like the route because the name makes the route feel inferior, very odd.
Nobody cares about the name. It’s just a bike lane. People use it to get from A to B.
I'm sure 99% of the people don't know this is what it is called. For us, it basically is a bike lane like any other.

In km/h. Of course, that is the maximum speed I could get on flat ground in no wind. Usually though I go slower, perhaps 18-20 as a maximum speed.
