This is what cycling should be and not some commercialized activity with fancy gear, fancy bicycles etc. Hats of to Netherlands for making cycling part of their day to day lives. Cycles here are used for shopping, leisure rides etc.. And to hell with helmets, fancy clothing, fancy cycles even simple ungeared cycles suffice. Main thing, enjoy cycling!!

I flew Martinair, courtesy of my boss's Xmas bonus. Her dad put me up for 2 wks & wore me ragged seeing all the sites, all on bike. It was the best vacation to date. Easy access to everything. Calm & relaxing. Still love biking when I can, though not so safe here in the states.

Clues: Notice that the Dutch like bikes for transportation with geometry that puts them sitting upright. Leaning forward puts you off balance with your head down. You are in a position that, if you lose control or hit something, it is hard to keep from cracking your head, because you will rotate head downward. Using a step-through (women's) bike also permits you to untangle yourself from the bike frame when you go down, and you can keep your head up when your body hits. Safer than a helmet.

I too fell in love with cycling when I visited the Netherlands. So when I returned to my country Malaysia ( just above Singapore), i immediately bought myself a bicycle just like your Dutch Bike and began picking up cycling once again after 55years ever since buying my first car. Only problem is, my country it isn’t bicycle friendly like yours and cycling is either for sport only or only the poor who can’t afford a car would ride it. How sad. But after watching yours as well as numerous videos about cycling in the Netherlands, I couldn’t care less. I just love cycling. Thank you

  • @TheMerkat55

Twentynine thousand kilometers of bicycle infrastructure, more people cycling than any other country in the world and, despite the lack of using a helmet while cycling an impressive cycling safety record. What lesson can be learned by the other countries from this. It's all about the infrastructure and the mindset of the car drivers concerning people cycling. Mixing people cycling together with cars is like putting your hand in front of a working circular saw. To prevent accidents you should keep hand and saw separated. To prevent traffic accidents involving bicycles you should keep cars and bicycles separated.

I've fallen more than once on my bike (in winter, when freezing roads can make it dangerous), but have never ever hurt my head (just knees and hands). Only collisions with cars or busses could mean injury to your head, and because our bike-lanes are so safe, it's just folly to wear a helmet.

Of course you can move to the Netherlands, and you are welcome here! How difficult it is to move depends on where you live now, if you live in an EU-country it is pretty easy to come here... According to your family name I guess you are from a Scandinavian country. But as Norway (Norge) and Iceland (Ísland) are no EU countries (yet) and you live in one of these 2 it might be a bit more difficult. But you always can try it...

I'd say it's changing in the right direction. I live in a small town in Midlands (population around 50-60k) and I can see more cycling paths being build every year. Ok, it's not a network yet but it's happening. For instance, I can cycle from my house to town centre 80% on dedicated cycling paths, 20% on quiet streets. Not bad, not bad at all. Couple years ago it was 30% cycling paths, 70% heavy traffic streets.

The Kindermoord campaign took hold in The Netherland before oil became the fundamental commodity of the planet. Unfortunately, the interests of countries like the UK are focused on wealth and not morals. So anyone not driving a car are not financing the oil and automobile industries. That's one if the reasons why little is being done to accommodate cyclists in the UK, despite the fact that the long-term benefits would be huge.

@ptuku Yes, rain & ice are treacherous, more so for a bike. One needs to slow down & be extra careful cornering & braking. But the situation is probably worst for the Danes & the Dutch for example - and they seem to manage fine... There is a saying "there is no bad weather, just bad clothing"...

@uniquedin My grandma used to say when I did not want to go out in the rain: you are not made of sugar :)
When it is raining, you put on a rain jacket. When it is freezing, you put on gloves and cycle a bit faster. I cycled to school all my life, 6 miles to get there in the morning and 6 miles back in the afternoon. No matter whether it was freezing, raining, snowing or what. It's just a mindset to think that you cannot cycle if weather is not perfect.

Notice to the rest of us !
Their system was non existent before early 70's.
They made it happen. They demolished buildings, made roads into bike paths, they thought about it long term ,they worked together.....cyclists, local councils, govt. ,local businesses....everyone together.
See the future, think win win scenarios, dont fight....but work for a solution. TOGETHER.
What I'm trying to say is that the Dutch ( Danish and Germans) didn't inherit a great system.....they worked for it.

the dutch are also the first ones in the world to completely remove overhead powerlines in the 80!

Please let's do this in South Africa. Commuter cycling promotes health, neighbourliness, efficiency, and minimises congestion & pollution. I invite you to come here and see for yourself. You can stay in our guest room if you'd like so you don't even have to pay for a hotel.

lol, i think in Dutch we call a bike with frontloader a Swedish bike but the closest thing to the frame in Dutch would be a grandmothersbike.. closest thing i found after 10 s of google was the : Batavus Old Dutch Plus 3 2013
and btw Holland is not The Netherlands but one of The Netherlands there are 13 more Netherlands(also counted outside of Europe)

Its very impressive, would love to cycle there, but, even without traffic you can still come off, roads are still hard, but does no one wear a helmet?!, wouldn't ride anywhere without mine.
