Thank you for the comment, Cris! Kimoro also mentioned the coins from Roam in this same comment section for this video! Sorcerer City coins are my favourite of any I own, including all of the Scythe coins. They stack, nesting, so it is really easy to pass them around the table for any game which uses trading.
Haha, came here to watch your video and recommend the Maracaibo coins. 🙃 Great examples! Metal coins add so much to the game, and for me are a great way to enjoy a game even more (instead of buying another game which might end up on the pile of shame).
Aren't they, though? ⚓ My only complaint is that the Maracaibo set doesn't come with more 1s! I'm glad you liked the examples I used, and I totally agree with you about the value metal coins add to a game! I'm at the point of my board game journey where I'm starting to prefer to "deluxify" a game I already own and love than buy a new game. (That's been applying to expansions more as well, lately!)
I love the metal coins by Broken Token for the Agra game. Each denomination is a different colour and size and the value is printed on both sides. So handy! I also love using the Iron Clays with Dicetown. So thematic! Thanks for the video!
Ooo! Those are really nice! I love the ancient aesthetic on the coins... they look almost like hieroglyphics in the background! Very nice coins! And yes, something about those Iron Clays screams Wild West to me! 🏜 Haven't had a chance to play Dicetown with them yet but the next time I see my cousins I'll use them!
Haha, at first I thought you meant you use the Iron Clays for 7 Wonders and I was going to have a hard time not saying anything about the thematic disconnect! 😂 Yes, those Agra ones seem perfect for 7 Wonders!
Oh, it was perfectly clear! It was just me skimming through our conversation at first and remembering that we had talked about the Iron Clays! 😂 I might get a chance to play Dice Town with my cousins tonight!
I’m not really that big into board games, but I like collecting all sorts of coins and some of my favorites are the scythe coins and the red dragon in coins. I love their weight and their sound because sound has always been a big thing with me since I have no site and just hearing and smell I definitely will look out for some of those coins for sure
Thank you so much for your comment, Chloe! I’m so glad you also appreciate nice metal coins! (I made a video about a real Spanish coin from 1718 that my girlfriend gave me! You might like that one!) You’re right that it’s not just about the look: the feel, the sound, even the smell of metal coins adds so much to a game! I’m not familiar with the Red Dragon Inn coins; I’ll have to check them out! ☺️
Those are nice and chunky! There are only 10 in the set, though? (I've never played the game, but I guess you don't need many!) And the Seafall ones are very nice as well! I like that that set comes with 100 coins and they're nice and generic! Good recommendations! 😊
@@blueseqperl Oh, that's odd! All the sets I'm seeing online come in a 10 pack but I guess you could always get multiple sets! They do look great; if I had more sci-fi/space-based games I'd consider getting them! 🚀
@@BoardGameDave there is the bronze 2,000 coins that come in a 10 pack. In the base game, they provide 40 coins (30 silver 1,000 coins and 10 blue 5,000 coins). Embers expansion adds 10 additional silver coins. The metal coins are included in the core game along with painted minis. It is definitely an overproduced Kickstarter game that I love.
@@blueseqperl Oh, I see! I should have just looked at the BGG page to see that the game comes with metal coins already! That game has been in my want-to-play list for a very long time... hopefully someday I'll be able to give it a try! (Nothing wrong with overproduced Kickstarters!) 😉
I got some amazing metal coins from etsy that are generic but nice enough to fit any game. They have 1s, 5s, 10s, and 25. I just wish they had some 2s. The shop is TLAMAgames and I would 100% recommend them to any board gamer. Their quality is fantastic and I have never been disappointed!
I'm on their Etsy shop right now and I've actually seen those exact coins pop up in conversations and searches about generic metal coins for board games! Very nice! They've got a whole bunch of really neat component upgrades... that's so cool! Thanks for the recommendation! ☺
My friend Gary has those coins and we've used them for MANY games over the years! My preference is to use coins that match the specific theme/setting of the game if possible, but those are a nice generic set! ☺ Thank you for the recommendation!
Wow, those are beautiful!! 😍 It’s hard to find good pictures online but are they really that colorful? I played that game once two years ago but I don’t think my friend (whose game it was) had the metal coins!
Great video! I was looking for a comparison like this and was happy to see the differences myself in the video over different coin sets. I am on the fence for Scythe coins which would be lovely to have but have a set of coins coming along with Mosaic. I have also been keeping an eye out for metal coins from Skybound's Sorcerer City which look good and are stackable too. If you have had a chance to try the Mosaic and Sorcerer City coins, I would be glad to know your thoughts.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, Rutvik! I will say that the Scythe coins are absolutely fantastic and I can't imagine playing without them! 😍 I didn't keep up with the Mosaic Kickstarter at all but it looks amazing... and the coins look great! The Scythe coins do have a very different (and unique) style, though! I did get a chance to play Sorcerer City with the metal coins once and they were really nice! I liked that they were stackable although they were maybe a little generic for my taste!
The Maracaibo ones are great indeed. I also have the Iron clays which is my stand-in replacement for games that do not have fancy coins or money. Special mention Villagers has wooden coins and Streets has wooden bills which are also very nice. I've also been using the Charterstone metal coins in our Gloomhaven campaign
The Iron Clays and Maracaibo coins are both amazing! So glad I have both in my collection! I didn't know about the wooden coins/bills in Villagers/Streets! I like the look of both of them, although I prefer the wooden bills! The Charterstone ones look nice and generic, but are there any denominations? It's nice to have a standard 1-5-10 set (which is what I use my Clans of Caledonia ones for, typically). I'm also a stickler for the coins matching the theme of the game, which is how I ended up with so many metal coin sets! 😅
I actually bought In the Hall of the Mountain King when I held the metal coins in my hand. I didn’t know anything about the game but I had to have these coins. No regrets
The coins are not the biggest but they’re very hefty. The game is fine. Lots of interesting mechanics blended together. I wouldn’t table it as much without the coins though 😁
Their downside is that they are everything BUT generic and I can’t think of another game to use them with. My other favorite ones have the same issue : Lords of Waterdeep. Amazing heft with unique shapes, but a little too unique…
Haha, you don't have another subterranean troll-based board game to use those with? 🤣 And the Lords of Waterdeep ones are amazing-I've seen those before! Those could work with any sort of magical/mystical game, right? 🌙
Except for Scythe and Viticulture, there seems to be a sudden dearth of metal coins. At least in Canada here, at the usual boardgame stores. Maybe something to do with the global supply chain issue?
They are gorgeous coins! I don’t know much about Pax Pamir but every time I see a picture of that game, I’m intrigued! You’ve played, I assume? What do you think about it?
@@BoardGameDave That is one of my favorite games from the moment I have played it the first time (despite I've lost and didn't catch everything). It's not too complex in rules - you just have to remember several nuances and pictures on cards - but it's really hard to master when you want to WIN. I'm mostly the eurogames player but this hits directly into my hearth. So tense, so much interaction (but not a stupid 'take that') and ways to win - every game feels a bit of unique. For 4-5 players it becomes more chaotic and harder to follow your plan (like more of tactical than strategic game) but much more diplomacy can be added there. For a 2 player game it could feel like a chess a bit - a battle of wits when the cost of a mistake is very high. And the theme is great even for an european (eastern) who wasn't involved into the history of that conflict. A lot of interesting flavor text, illustration, card design... Oh, and the components - that gorgeous clay bricks, tissue field, lacquered wooden region control discs...
@@romanandrusenko9489 You're really selling it, Roman! I brought Pax Pamir up with some friends at game night this week and after watching a few videos it does feel more like a euro game than a war game... at least from my limited experience! It's definitely a game that's high on my want-to-play list! Thank you so much for the great overview! I appreciate it! 😊
Quick note: a keen-eyed viewer (scratch that: probably the smartest, most handsome, well-dressed, all-around "man of the town") pointed out that the 7 Wonders Duel coins I showed in the video are the Broken Token brand coins, not the official Repos Production coins. I had no idea! They're very similar and I love the look and feel of the ones I have! ☺
They are fantastic coins! Unfortunately, it seems like they're out of stock across many vendors right now! It might be hard to find a set at the moment, sadly! I wonder if people are buying the coins now as they receive the Uprising expansion for the game... but hopefully that means they'll make more coins to meet the demand?
I haven’t joined the deluxification craze part of the hobby yet (usually opting to add a game to my collection over upgrading the bits) but the thought of getting a set for all games that use coins is starting to appeal to me. Just not sure which set would be most versatile! 😂
For the longest time I would have definitely said I'd rather have a new game than upgraded components/coins but at this point I really think I'd rather "deluxify" a game I know that I'm going to play a lot instead of getting another game! ☺️ I'd check out the Clans of Caledonia coins-they're super versatile and generic and I've used my set at least 90 times since I got them!
I've not played it yet, but the metal coins for OATH are really good. They have these 'teeth' on the faces so that you can stack them nicely. And yeah, I've always been confused by CENTURY GOLEM EDITION having Copper worth more than Silver. It's weird. 😆
I'm looking at them now and they DO look amazing! I like the way they stack together neatly... the only other coins I can think of that interlock like that are the ones from Sorcerer City but those didn't make this list! Yeah, that is weird, right? For the longest time I was just teaching the game with silver being worth 3 points and copper being worth 1 point but lately I've been putting them in the right place and just calling the silver coins "tin" to justify them being worth less! 😅
I really like the look of the Pax Pamir coins but I've never played the game! (All of the components in that game look really nice-it's the main reason why I'd like to give it a try!)
There are actually official metal coins for 7 Wonders Duel from Repos Production! I’m not sure how easy they are to get ahold of, though… but my friend got me the ones by The Broken Token and they’re almost identical! (You can see them at 3:53 in the video!) @@BoardGameDave We must have been on the same wavelength as after I sent it, I wondered if you would interpret it that way as I was not clear. Haha….
I would recommend checking out the metal coins for Xia. If you want universal metal coins, I would recommend the Seafall metal coin upgrade.
Those are nice and chunky! There are only 10 in the set, though? (I've never played the game, but I guess you don't need many!) And the Seafall ones are very nice as well! I like that that set comes with 100 coins and they're nice and generic! Good recommendations! 😊
@@BoardGameDave there are definitely more than 10 in the base game. It increases if you got the Embers expansion.
@@BoardGameDave You're very welcome!
Rise to nobility ones, my favourites.
My friend Gary has those coins and we've used them for MANY games over the years! My preference is to use coins that match the specific theme/setting of the game if possible, but those are a nice generic set! ☺ Thank you for the recommendation!
Check out the coins for merchants of the dark road. Hands down my favorite.
No regrets
Whoa, I just looked them up-they're awesome! 🧌 I'm glad you also appreciate a nice set of coins! (How's the game, though?) 😅
The coins are not the biggest but they’re very hefty.
The game is fine. Lots of interesting mechanics blended together. I wouldn’t table it as much without the coins though 😁
Yeah, they looked chunky! And I get what you mean about not playing a game as much were it not for the coins! 😅 It just makes any game so much better!
One of my favorite coin sets is the one for Waterdeep.
Those are lovely coins, and so unique! (Although the square ones always make me think of Cheez-Its!) 🧀
Except for Scythe and Viticulture, there seems to be a sudden dearth of metal coins. At least in Canada here, at the usual boardgame stores. Maybe something to do with the global supply chain issue?
I’m sorry to hear that, Paulo! I would assume it has to do with that, yeah… seems like everything is totally out of whack these days! 😕
Take a look at Pax Pamir coins. Despite there is only one denomination there, that single coin (Afghan rupee) fits the theme just perfectly!
@@BoardGameDave Wow! Nice to hear that. Yes, it's more euro than a war game. Hope you wouldn't be disappointed!
@@romanandrusenko9489 Thanks! Now I just need to find someone who owns a copy and would want to play with me! 😅
I was really surprised to see metal coins in a relatively cheap edition as RAIDS by IELLO.
Ooo, those are some nice coins! (I'm looking at them right now on BGG!) 🪙 Is Raids a good game? I love a good Viking theme! ⚔️
I like the metal coins for maracaibo. Where can I get my hands on those?
They are fantastic coins! Unfortunately, it seems like they're out of stock across many vendors right now! It might be hard to find a set at the moment, sadly! I wonder if people are buying the coins now as they receive the Uprising expansion for the game... but hopefully that means they'll make more coins to meet the demand?
I just love metal coins!!
You can't beat them! Do you have a particular favorite set? 🪙
Great list! Metal coins 4 life!!!
Haha, I do think I'll always be obsessed with them! What are your favorite metal coins? 🪙
@@BoardGameDave Tin. That's brilliant. 😆
Thanks! 😅 I just figured if I called it Silver, everyone would think it’s the higher-valued coin! It really was a weird design choice!
Best coins a ever seen have Khora: rise of the empire. They are huge, heavy and simply looks amazing
Whoa, they’re super nice! I’ve played Khôra before; didn’t realize there were metal coins for that game! Good choice! 👍🏼
Pax Pamir metal coins have unique aesthetic in it
I really like the look of the Pax Pamir coins but I've never played the game! (All of the components in that game look really nice-it's the main reason why I'd like to give it a try!)
Can any one suggest best brand of coins have a nice weight and great for 7 wonders duel
There are actually official metal coins for 7 Wonders Duel from Repos Production! I’m not sure how easy they are to get ahold of, though… but my friend got me the ones by The Broken Token and they’re almost identical! (You can see them at 3:53 in the video!) Here’s a link to the coins: thebrokentoken.com/products/dueling-metal-coins-31?variant=44608344588580¤cy=USD&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAACLn4edMJuO6SKVHYZybeN8tEEiU_&gclid=CjwKCAjw0aS3BhA3EiwAKaD2ZUyZjhgJT3Gkt6mXdVz0CkD0J7pKhnB1c1LsdPvBVJSDin_SCL75zhoCyjwQAvD_BwE
what you think about the ones for Gloomhaven?
Ooo! Those are pretty cool! (I like the bag!) ☺️ I used a medieval-themed set from The Broken Token when I played JOTL!
@@BoardGameDave thats cool to hear, thought about getting them.
would have asked about the ones in Oathsworn, but not sure if u got them (and they seem simpler)
@@otakuofmine Just looked them up! Those are really cool, too! ☺️
@@BoardGameDave good to hear, i take that as the coin expert approvel hehe ;)
Haha! You may absolutely do that! 🤣
Where did you order this maracaibo and clans coins from?? I can't find them anywhere 😞
Unfortunately, I think the Clans of Caledonia ones are completely sold out! (Which is a bummer because I’d love to have another set!) But I think they’re reprinting the game next year, maybe? So maybe you could get the coins then? 🤔 The Maracaibo coins seem more available! Tabletop Merchant has them in stock, it looks like!
@@BoardGameDave thanks Dave!
@@BoardGameDave ah bummer they only ship within the us (I'm in canada) oh well, dave do you remember if your maracaibo coins are from capstone games or moedas and co??
Oh no! My Maracaibo coins were from Capstone Games-I got them well before I started this channel! ☺️ But it looks like Moedas & Co. partners with Board Game Bliss for distribution in Canada and they've got one set left in stock! www.boardgamebliss.com/search?type=product&q=NOT+tag%3A__gift+AND+maracaibo+coins*&product_type=
@@BoardGameDave thanks Dave! Yes I saw thaf but hard to justify at twice the price since they appear to be the exact same as the Capstone games version
A pity you dont say anything about if you can stack up the coins or not. Cause some you can't, like the stonemaier coins for Viticulture or Scythe... A pity you can't get the broken token coins for decent prices in Germany. I'd have to import them.
I really didn't think to mention anything about the stackability of the coins... that really wasn't a consideration for me although it's nice when they do stack! (Like the Sorcerer City coins!) I'm sorry that the shipping costs are so expensive for you!
the best metal coins ever are the ones from Roam! :)
I remember playing Roam but I’m pretty sure we didn’t have the metal coins! (They look nice but they’re REALLY expensive online!) 🐸
@@BoardGameDave they’re worth it!! you would love them 😎
@@kimoro9643 I'd have to think about what game they would work with thematically! I'm a stickler for the coins matching the theme of the game! (Although I suppose I could just buy the Kickstarter edition of Roam!) 😅
@@BoardGameDave you can use them for any Arzium game (Roam, Above and Below, Near and Far, City of Iron, The Ancient World)!
What would be your best suggestion for coins to use with medieval-y games like Orleans? :) (maybe the Clans of Caledonia ones hey?)
@@kimoro9643 That's a good point! (We used the metal coins for The Ancient World... those were really nice, too!) I've actually been looking at Orléans a lot lately and the metal coins for that game by TMG look just like the Clans of Caledonia coins! I'd say go for whichever is cheaper... they're virtually interchangeable! 👍
Sacagawea Golden Dollar Coin!
I don’t remember the game Lewis & Clark coming with metal coins! 🤔 Haha, I haven’t seen one of those in ages! They were only minting them from 2000-2008, apparently! (You can get them online pretty cheap!)
