- Un-boxing and installation of a 128 GB M.2 next gen form factor solid state drive. The Lenovo Flex 15 comes equipped with a vacant bay for this very small form factor SSD and is definitely worth the $100 upgrade. I've included a link to the SSD as well as link to the service manual for this laptop. Pg 35 shows how to remove the back.

Thanks for posting this, as you confirmed that there is an m.2 SATA port in the original Flex 15. It'll help me upgrade. One tip: the SSHD in the Flex is a Seagate, which means you can download the free Seatools software from Seagate and use that software to clone the partitions from the original drive onto the m.2 ssd (as long as the o/s, programs and data don't exceed the size of the ssd). This will save a lot of time in migrating from booting with the SSHD to booting with the m.2 ssd. Also, to get the Seatools migration software to work, you need to first go into the BIOS and deactivate the UEFI/safe boot and enable legacy boot. UEFI/Safe boot is there to prevent unauthorized takeovers of your computer. After you've migrated, make sure to turn it back on again.
Good shit. The hardest part, which is taking apart the bottom part is omitted. Awesome video.
do you know how to take the back off?? Pleas share!!!
Joshua Abbott
+1
Joshua Abbott just unscrew the screws on the bottom of the laptop, and pry it apart. if you hear snapping, its okay
I ended up doing so, and It went well, I used a thin credit card, and worked ok. You think this guy will show that part...
Thanks for sharing your journey on installing the mSATA ssd -
Thanks for watching!

After installing you should go to Control Panel/Administrative/Computer Management and format the new SSD so it can be recognized and mounted as another drive.
+kanehi +1980norcal was going to suggest this as well but its a year later
Hi. Is it a 2242 SSD? Or mSATA? My computer is Lenovo ideapad flex 15
Hi! Do you know if Can I put an 80mm SSD and skip putting the screw?
Any news on that? I'm not sure of the exact length of his ssd (is it a 42?). Did you have any luck with the longer m.2 drive? If just a length issue I thought about adding some silicon to hold it in place.
You can’t put that length because it doesn’t have the screw hole for it, it only fits 2242 ssds, and it has to be mSATA (don’t quote me though, not sure if an NVME ssd can work)
try start+x - that'll show a system menu, pick computer management and you should see the hard drive there (in the disk management). You can create a file system on it and use it as "thumb drive". Or you can use a tool like Acronis Migrate easy to just copy the data over. The only problem I can think of is the SSD drive is smaller then you're current one.
How did you get the back off? It looks like there are screws under the keyboard, but I'm cautious to pull the keyboard without any insight? ..... Nevermind, I found I had to remove the two rubber feet, pull those screws, then things would pop apart properly.
Hi, sorry for the late reply.. Yes the back is a major PIA to remove. Take out all of the screws. Also need to pry off the two rubber pieces closest to the hinge to access screws there as well. Under the battery there are more screws, so the battery must come off. Don't forget the screw close to the center in the back as well... Once all of the screw are removed you will need a spudger or a butter knife to basically break the cover loose. I started at the USB 2.0 ports and worked my way to the right. Be careful not to damage the boards or connections inside. The back will need some force to be removed the first time and unfortunately a few of the small plastic tabs that also hold it on may break in the process. Not to worry as long as everything goes back together and nothing vital is broken. Ive added a link to the description for the service manual. Pg 35 has instructions for removing the back.
Thanks, I got it. Love these tools: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008B02YW8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
just wondering... does the Flex 2 come with the M.2 SSD slot?
Was it upside down?? Please show ho to open up next time I have a 8GB ram siting next to my computer
How do you install (clone?) the OS on the SSD and get rid of the main HDD when there is no DVD drive?
You mention the difficulty in taking the back off yet completely miss that part out on the video ... Thanks
I have a Lenovo Ideapad Y700 gaming laptop, and it also had the vacant M.2 slot. It's really nice having the ability to put two drives in the laptop like that, but I'm curious..... how come they actually _have_ that extra slot anyway? Are there configurations you can get of the laptop where it comes with two drives pre-installed? o 3o
Lodmot originally it was designed to be used as a cache for the HDD but I don’t believe there was any option with an ssd AFAIK
Hi 1980norcal I've watched this vid several times but still having a few issues:
1. I've put the ssd into my lenovo and its recognised but how do u know if it is installed? if not how do you install it?
2. Did you take out the hdd completely? and how did u change the BIOS to boot from the ssd. (I can't find how to do it when I restart the laptop into the BIOS menu like how you showed in the video)
3. I've cloned my hdd to my ssd using macrium reflect so I don't have to buy windows 8 again, I'd prefer to do that then re install everything again but if so did u actually have to buy windows 8 again? and what do u mean by OEM install?
sorry for all the questions its just this video is closest explanation to installing ssd into lenovo ideapad flew 15 on the internet, thanks.
2 - you put your SSD on your boot priority list to the first place.
1M$ question - will it work with the flex 2? I mean does the flex 2 have the mSATA port?
Ire Min Mon No, FLex 2-15 does not have mSATA port. So this method cannot be used.
WarriorHannibal Thank you, they should have included this option though...
Ire Min Mon Flex 2-15 has optical drive option. You can put a HDD/SSD in optical drive's compartment. Flex 2-15 I'm working with came with "dummy" optical drive - plastic bracket in drive's compartment, but a small chip - optical drive connector board (Slim Sata to Lenovo non-standard Sata motherboard port adapter) is missing. That connector board can be found on eBay or in local PC repair shop where people sell parts from used Lenovo laptops.
Otherwise Flex 2-15 is a great price/performance laptop. Especially it's IPS screen.
WarriorHannibal Thank you, I know that optical drive can be replaced with SATA SSD. I like this laptop and its' price/performance ratio, but if they managed to put an mSATA port inside along with the optical drive in the first version I see no point in disabling this feature for 2nd gen.
Can anyone share their recovery USB with me? I've got the flex 15 with an i5 4100U processor, hardrive died and my backup USB recovery is missing miracously.
Hey, I know it's a long shot but I just found out that there's this m.2 slot on my lenovo flex, and I was wondering if you or anybody in the comments could tell me the exact formfactor of this ssd (is it a 2242 or a 2230?). Thanks in advance.
nunokblo the unit in this video uses a 2242 but watch out when buying that it must have a central screw, because there are options with two screws which won’t work
Is this the same motherboard as flex 2?
I beleive that IS a flex 2.
I'm asking the same question myself. I dont belive this is the flex2 model. I want to do this replacement to my flex2 (I want to purchase this model) and I also wanted to know if it has the same motherboard. 1980norcal, can you please answer us? Thanks!
Dvir Nosrat Flex and Flex 2 have different motherboards. Flex 2-15 doesn't have mSata port, but it has optical drive option. So you can install second ssd / hdd in optical drive bay.
Just an FYI It is an NGFF M.2 SATA connection not mSATA. mSATA will not work for this application.
hello. i have the lenovo flex 15 can i extansion my ram to 8gb with out removing my 4gb????
No. Lenovo Flex hav only one memory slot.
video disassembly. that's what i was hoping to see... (((
can we upgrade for flex 2 14 model
rajiv9702 same question ? anyone can answer please ?
Good Job,Thanks
Eh, the most important part - removing the keyboard and cover - is not shown.
