I was recently diagnosed and having some of my 'strange' behaviors explained is cool because now I don't feel stupid for stimming, i.e. rocking, saying a phrase over and over, having music all the time, or videos, mouth popping, and other noises or movements ESPECIALLY when I'm happy and brain go brr and my body just gotta move
That video makes me very angry and sad that there are still so many "professionals" out there that make it seem as if ADHD is a lesser kind of brain chemistry than a neurotypical brain chemistry. And to say that our brain is slower than others make us seem dumb. And that is not the case! ADHD brains function differently. And that is nothing that needs to be fixed. We just have different weaknesses and strengths than others. We have a million ideas, are innovative, think outside the box and are very empathetic. I would not chnage this just to be more neurotypical. Just let ADHD brains stim and if it is disruptive than maybe children can learn to stim in a way that is less disruptive and society should be more accepting of people who need to stim. It’s like I have 100 ppl in my head asking different questions and I can’t focus on one thing cuz I’m trying to do them all. My brain is like awake all the time. I take weed to help slow my brain down so I can focus on one thing. So o have no idea wtf she’s talking about.
True. 1st thing I thought about was this is some new age theoretical stuff that someone pitched and investors threw money at it. You can’t force a neurological problem to get better like that. That’s not how brain science works.

i dont actually know if i have adhd, but im strongly suspicious of it after looking at how people with adhd act like little behaviours and symptoms. i didnt notice how likely it is i could have it because i have a lot of symptoms, i do a lot of things people with adhd usually do like subconcious behaviours and also stim a lot. im scared to tell my mother tho bc i was getting excited at the dinner table and started clapping my wrists together and she called me the r slur, then my dad furthermore made fun of autistic people and people with speech impediments. it made me feel so bad. and my mum has adhd too so i shouldnt even be that scared to ask for a test but i am. what should i do, all i can do right now is watch these videos for help... update: my mum never ended up taking me to get tested but im stuck with the school counselor now D:
I'd say go ask them as soon as you feel comfortable :) your parents can't really be mad at you for wanting to look into something that is a possibility especially if your mom has ADHD as well
Honestly don't let the slurs bother you, cause they are just words. But if you confront your parents, & they are willing to go with you to get diagnosed & receive treatment then you'll be okay. But if they refuse to help you, then I don't know what to say then... I'm sorry if things don't work out for you ://.

When i told her this she didnt understand why i want to get the diagnosis, i dont think she understands how hard for me is doing Basic stuff (i did tried to explain it to her, but she just declines everything and says that all people go thought it) Whenether i stim or just walk from place to another in her presence shes so annoyed at me and making weird faces. A friend from her job (i never talked to them) told me to take the vitamins and exercise outside and that i dont have adhd(she told them that i self diagnosed by online tests 😭) I stim a lot now, and develop more and more stims (i got 2 new ones recently) and im not really sure what to do! That might be by the lack of sleep and maybe strees or something else but i really Hope this isnt my fault Sorry for the long comment, and also potential spell and grammar mistakes
I wrote a whole essay of a comment on how and why I consider the message of this video harmful (regardless of intent) with some neuroscience thrown into it about arousal levels and firing mode and cognition because screw it, but now I'm too self-conscious to post it. So I'll just say this: stimming, unless it's actively harming you or those around you (and no, "looking weird" to others does not count as harmful) is harmless and a great way to regulate yourself and sometimes even a form of self-expression and communication. Everybody does it, but differences in sensory processing and emotional regulation can make neurodivergent people more prone to it. Regardless, it's harmless, so feel free to keep doing it. As for other struggles ... helping people with ADHD usually requires a combination of treatments, coping strategies catered to how their brain works, and self-acceptance. Neurofeedback training can be a part of that. What none of these things do is eliminate ADHD completely - nor do they have to. Yes, ADHD can be debilitating, but living a happy, healthy and fulfilling life is possible with ADHD and does not require making your brain completely "normal." Nor should that be the goal. Disabled or not, given how many brain functions are affected by ADHD, it is more than just a pathology. It is a completely different way for a brain to function. Again, some aspects of it _do_ cause suffering and should be addressed. But it also comes with different strengths and abilities. ADHD brains have value. People with ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions/differently wired brains can display great knowledge, passion, drive, creativity, empathy and new, innovative ideas under the right circumstances, their value deserves to be recognised (though what you "contribute to society" or whatever obviously doesn't make up your value). They should be supported to get to a place where they can be their authentic selves, feel overall content and cope with everyday life through coping strategies that respect how their brain works, and often medication and/or accomodations. ND people are not just "broken normal" people, and they don't deserve to be treated like they're just that. ND and other disabled people deserve to be treated as reliable narrators of their own experience, and they should have a say in _what_ is treated and _how_ it is treated.

I'm sure that some stimming behaviour should be reduced or replaced but this take can easily be interpreted as ALL stimming behaviour being harmful or a sign of your brain not functioning "optimally." (I'd also be interested what optimal would look like to you and how flexible your definition of it is.) (Arousal regulation does appear to be more unstable in people with ADHD from what I've read which makes sense given that both the dopaminergic and noradrenergic system are involved and stimulants are an effective but not perfect treatment. If I understood things correctly this could very well make it more difficult to enter and sustain a phasic mode, optimise PFC excitability and its associated cognitive and executive functions and sustain attention. I was under the assumption that ADHD is more about differences in attention regulation and adaptation of neuromodulatory systems to different situations (e.g. inattention AND hyperfocus, drowsiness AND overexcitability), including both noradrenaline to regulate cognitive functions (amongst other things) and dopamine for motivation, e.g. to see a multi-step task through. Then there's sensory processing (esp sensory gating), emotional regulation, impulse control and other issues that my guess is could be linked to these two systems in particular. This is just me rambling because I like this stuff, I'm still reading up on it because it's kinda hard to find conclusive research about some things and I was just curious which aspects of ADHD you covered and apply in your treatment. I was also wondering how your explanation fits into some common ADHD experiences that can be better explained by higher baseline arousal/a tonic firing mode which lends itself to the idea that the differences in arousal regulation are more complex than just "too little". Also, what's your take on other treatments? One of your comment replies suggests you're against stimulant treatment, but I don't want to put words in your mouth. These are just questions to understand what you said and are going for correctly. I do a lot of mouth stims like whistling or popping my mouth it seems to annoy others which sucks because I don’t know I’m doing it half the time. But now ik why ty!!

I was just diagnosed last year by 5 different professionals cuz I don’t trust anyone. I’m planning on going to get a brain scan to make 100% sure. I tried adderal and something else they didn’t work well for me. Weed is great it helps slow down my thinking.
I was diagnosed with adhd very early in my life which I am very greatful for and have gotten special help in school!! But for the longest time I get accused of having autism because of stimming but it helps with my focusing in school, Im highly affected by adhd but don't take medication because I don't have good affects by it 😬
one time my teacher reported to my mom that i was having "constant" anxiety attacks in class bc i was rocking back and forth and she didnt know it was just my adhd 😭😭 i have an iep and all that so she just misidentified the behavior but i still find it kind of funny
That's exactly what they said about my eeg when I was 13. They told my parents my brain went into sleep mode (while doing the reading test section 😂) it was purposely supposed to be a boring read. My parents were angry with me, because according to them, i "failed the test"!
This is the first time I have someone describe it this way and it makes perfect sense to me now .. I always thought that I had a ' Sleepy Brain ' and even coffee didnt work sometimes it made me more sluggish. Stimulants solved this deblitating symptom .
My husband is like "why are you moving your leg! stop it! but what happens is that later on I'll start verbally stemming which makes me look insane cause ill sing super loud or squeak for like 10 seconds and then I'm done 😂
Psychiatrist or therapist. A Psychiatrist can prescribe you meds if they decide you need to be on them, but a Psychologist & therapist cannot prescribe meds. If you wanna get an honest diagnosis, then see a therapist cause they are there to talk to you & get to know you, a Psychiatrist only cares about your symptoms so that they know what the "best" medication is to treat you with. I still haven't figured out what a Psychologist does, I know back in the day those were the people who did experiments on other people, but I think doing that kind of thing is illegal now lol.
As a kid I used to chew through pencils and eat chicken bones and just have a need in general to be able to bite down on things. Now when the need arises popcorn and kettle chips do the trick

As far as o understand, the main reason relates to the bad communication in our brains. We lack certain chemicals in the brain (dopamine and one other thing) that helps transport communication in the brain. But because we have such low levels, a lot of things feel like they take a lot more effort than for neurotypicals and thats why the brain is just sort of exhausted. It's like the adhd brain is a kid trying to eat an adult meal. It's exhausting and sometimes impossible. So if your brain is exhausted by small, non engaging tasks of course it's tired. That's why we focus more easily in interesting stuff: more dopamine means communication transports better in the brain. But only while you do the thing 😅
The slow brain signals (delta and theta waves) are what she’s talking about, I think. You can look up the connection between brain waves and adhd for yourself cuz I don’t feel like typing all that stuff right now.
"Excessive slowing" this is not true! Our brains aren't slow at all, they are faster than the "normal brains" because they are smaller in one of the halfs and in the back, and because of that the blood circulation increases and information appears and Disappear faster, we also are Hypersensitive (Emotionally and In the 5 senses 🤚👂👀👄👃) caused by that fast blood circulation, but because our thoughs are running like crazy sometimes we cant pay attention to somenting that isnt for our speed, like this doctor long pauses between every single word, we can't slow down our speed, its an effort so big that we feel exhausted and just want to sleep. Now imagine this in every single thing in your Life (in school especially) We stim because doing one thing only is exhausting for our brains, and to be able to focus we create more stuff to do so we don't get stress and give up + ⬇️
Thats why sometimes when somoeme is talking slow we do the "shake the leg " thing, Unconsciously we have hope that it will Increase the speed of her slow talking and ends ups we calming us down. Everything you mention sounds more like severe anxiety than ADHD lol. I never actually had any issues when I was younger, I was just hyper a lot & didn't focus very well. Unfortunately I was disciplined in a negative way for behaving "inappropriately" or just not acting like everyone else, all this discipline caused me to have a seriously low self-esteem cause I'm also really sensitive lol, but then I developed other unrelated issues as I got older. So yeah ADHD isn't actually too disruptive of your everyday life, the way how people treat you when you have ADHD is the disruptive part of your life.
But I was also born in the 90's, mental health has always been a really taboo thing, probably within the last 10 years or so is when people finally started taking all our mental stuff seriously. So I'm hoping things will be different for my future kid as he/she is growing up.

My mum friend who is a social worker told me that only people with asd stim and it’s kind of damgerging Cus I have adhd and stim and my mum won’t listen to me and now won’t take me seriously
What that friend said is totally untrue-- even neurotypical people (folks without adhd OR asd) stim, just for different reasons and in different ways. So sorry your mom believed that misconception. I'm sure it's hard to have to deal with that. Maybe consider showing her this video? Sharing another professional's information might help her learn the truth.
Just like vampberry said...Stimming is not only for ASD, many people do it to offset the needs of their Brain. But...You can improve your brain performance so it doesn’t need to anymore.

hey! im not a doctor, but the difference between stimming and tics is that stimming is a sort of need/'itch' to do the thing (the stim), and tics are involuntary, like blinking.

I'm still a bit confused on this, because there's some things that I just become aware that I'm doing some movements and not realizing there's a need/itch to do it. However, when I stop, it feels like I really need to move it. If I can focus on it for like 30 seconds or even a couple minutes I can get the feeling to subside, but there's still a feeling that if I move the whole body part, I'd end up doing the action I caught myself doing. Would that still technically be called a stim?
I tend to rock badk an forth when I am on the phone esp with doctors or insurance people I get so stressed out I tend to wonder away an my dad had to keep me on the kitchen so I won’t wonder off…it happens at work too I have to stay occupied or I’ll wonder off or take my necklace off an expensive picking (using needles to clean crevices in the chain links) so to prevent that I have music playing in rhr background but I do get annoyed with music so I use a Star Wars sized figure 2-4 of them an fidget with that when ppl don’t notice I’m stimming (I’m 31)
I'm 25 now and my vocal stiming has recently gotten worse and idk what to do. If I keep myself from doing it my throat becomes really uncomfortable, I even stim while I'm eating now

Lots of my family members take prescription amphetamines to concentrate on work/school but that seems like a more bandaid solution. Flooding their brains with dopamine (with drugs or excess stimulation) seems like it will guarantee ADHD symptoms. The same way a type 2 diabetic taking insulin guarantees they will always be insulin resistance.
My brother has this program and it drives me nuts because I don't like any stimulation or the radio on at all. I've seen him fall asleep at church if he is not constantly moving around. He always says he is bored. I feel over stimulated and I want peace and quiet. I think that I have Aspergers.

No it’s not lol, half of what she’s saying is bull shit and panders to one type of ADHD. Most of its really unhealthy and can lead to masking and imposter syndrome for other types of ADHD. Do research about other types of adhd before taking anything this woman has to say seriously.

(Arousal regulation does appear to be more unstable in people with ADHD from what I've read which makes sense given that both the dopaminergic and noradrenergic system are involved and stimulants are an effective but not perfect treatment. If I understood things correctly this could very well make it more difficult to enter and sustain a phasic mode, optimise PFC excitability and its associated cognitive and executive functions and sustain attention. I was under the assumption that ADHD is more about differences in attention regulation and adaptation of neuromodulatory systems to different situations (e.g. inattention AND hyperfocus, drowsiness AND overexcitability), including both noradrenaline to regulate cognitive functions (amongst other things) and dopamine for motivation, e.g. to see a multi-step task through. Then there's sensory processing (esp sensory gating), emotional regulation, impulse control and other issues that my guess is could be linked to these two systems in particular. This is just me rambling because I like this stuff, I'm still reading up on it because it's kinda hard to find conclusive research about some things and I was just curious which aspects of ADHD you covered and apply in your treatment. I was also wondering how your explanation fits into some common ADHD experiences that can be better explained by higher baseline arousal/a tonic firing mode which lends itself to the idea that the differences in arousal regulation are more complex than just "too little".
Also, what's your take on other treatments? One of your comment replies suggests you're against stimulant treatment, but I don't want to put words in your mouth.

I was just diagnosed last year by 5 different professionals cuz I don’t trust anyone. I’m planning on going to get a brain scan to make 100% sure. I tried adderal and something else they didn’t work well for me. Weed is great it helps slow down my thinking.

That's exactly what they said about my eeg when I was 13. They told my parents my brain went into sleep mode (while doing the reading test section 😂) it was purposely supposed to be a boring read. My parents were angry with me, because according to them, i "failed the test"!
This is the first time I have someone describe it this way and it makes perfect sense to me now .. I always thought that I had a ' Sleepy Brain ' and even coffee didnt work sometimes it made me more sluggish.

Psychiatrist or therapist. A Psychiatrist can prescribe you meds if they decide you need to be on them, but a Psychologist & therapist cannot prescribe meds. If you wanna get an honest diagnosis, then see a therapist cause they are there to talk to you & get to know you, a Psychiatrist only cares about your symptoms so that they know what the "best" medication is to treat you with. I still haven't figured out what a Psychologist does, I know back in the day those were the people who did experiments on other people, but I think doing that kind of thing is illegal now lol.

As far as o understand, the main reason relates to the bad communication in our brains. We lack certain chemicals in the brain (dopamine and one other thing) that helps transport communication in the brain. But because we have such low levels, a lot of things feel like they take a lot more effort than for neurotypicals and thats
why the brain is just sort of exhausted. It's like the adhd brain is a kid trying to eat an adult meal. It's exhausting and sometimes impossible. So if your brain is exhausted by small, non engaging tasks of course it's tired. That's why we focus more easily in interesting stuff: more dopamine means communication transports better in the brain. But only while you do the thing 😅
The slow brain signals (delta and theta waves) are what she’s talking about, I think. You can look up the connection between brain waves and adhd for yourself cuz I don’t feel like typing all that stuff right now.

Our brains aren't slow at all, they are faster than the "normal brains" because they are smaller in one of the halfs and in the back, and because of that the blood circulation increases and information appears and Disappear faster, we also are Hypersensitive (Emotionally and In the 5 senses 🤚👂👀👄👃) caused by that fast blood circulation, but because our thoughs are running like crazy sometimes we cant pay attention to somenting that isnt for our speed, like this doctor long pauses between every single word, we can't slow down our speed, its an effort so big that we feel exhausted and just want to sleep.
Now imagine this in every single thing in your Life (in school especially)
We stim because doing one thing only is exhausting for our brains, and to be able to focus we create more stuff to do so we don't get stress and give up + ⬇️
Thats why sometimes when somoeme is talking slow we do the "shake the leg " thing, Unconsciously we have hope that it will Increase the speed of her slow talking and ends ups we calming us down.

Everything you mention sounds more like severe anxiety than ADHD lol. I never actually had any issues when I was younger, I was just hyper a lot & didn't focus very well. Unfortunately I was disciplined in a negative way for behaving "inappropriately" or just not acting like everyone else, all this discipline caused me to have a seriously low self-esteem cause I'm also really sensitive lol, but then I developed other unrelated issues as I got older. So yeah ADHD isn't actually too disruptive of your everyday life, the way how people treat you when you have ADHD is the disruptive part of your life.
But I was also born in the 90's, mental health has always been a really taboo thing, probably within the last 10 years or so is when people finally started taking all our mental stuff seriously. So I'm hoping things will be different for my future kid as he/she is growing up.

What that friend said is totally untrue-- even neurotypical people (folks without adhd OR asd) stim, just for different reasons and in different ways. So sorry your mom believed that misconception. I'm sure it's hard to have to deal with that. Maybe consider showing her this video? Sharing another professional's information might help her learn the truth.

hey! im not a doctor, but the difference between stimming and tics is that stimming is a sort of need/'itch' to do the thing (the stim),
and tics are involuntary, like blinking.

I'm still a bit confused on this, because there's some things that I just become aware that I'm doing some movements and not realizing there's a need/itch to do it. However, when I stop, it feels like I really need to move it. If I can focus on it for like 30 seconds or even a couple minutes I can get the feeling to subside, but there's still a feeling that if I move the whole body part, I'd end up doing the action I caught myself doing. Would that still technically be called a stim?

I tend to rock badk an forth when I am on the phone esp with doctors or insurance people I get so stressed out I tend to wonder away an my dad had to keep me on the kitchen so I won’t wonder off…it happens at work too I have to stay occupied or I’ll wonder off or take my necklace off an expensive picking (using needles to clean crevices in the chain links) so to prevent that I have music playing in rhr background but I do get annoyed with music so I use a Star Wars sized figure 2-4 of them an fidget with that when ppl don’t notice I’m stimming (I’m 31)

Yes. If you stimulate a lot and aggressively it likely means that your brain is running quite slow. You could optimize it with brain training.

Lots of my family members take prescription amphetamines to concentrate on work/school but that seems like a more bandaid solution. Flooding their brains with dopamine (with drugs or excess stimulation) seems like it will guarantee ADHD symptoms. The same way a type 2 diabetic taking insulin guarantees they will always be insulin resistance.
