    Hi everyone, its Kelsie. Alright, lets talk about something. Ever notice how nice those pieces of artwork look on instagram or tiktok when the artist rips the painters tape off. There is this beautiful border with this lovely painting on it. Ever noticed how straight the paper is? Yeah me neither. Until I tried to paint one on watercolor paper and it was bent as all get out. I did weigh it down with loads of paint, but still. Hello. Its watercolor paper, it totally should have been able to handle it. Wrong.
    So then I got angry and threw the painting. I have anger problems. But then after my fit I started researching different types of paper. Turns out there are tons of different types of paper for different types of paintings. There is paper for oil painting, water color, ink drawings, and gel painting (which is totally a hint for a future video).
    Each type of paper is made for a specific purpose, so you can use your Molotow markers on watercolor paper and that’s okay, but you run into problems. Like in that example, the paint from the markers balled up and left paint turds on the paper. If you try to use regular copier paper, good luck my friend. Your painting will turn into soup.
    Okay you get my point, so I was on the look out for some paper that I could paint on that wouldn’t roll up into a tube when I painted it.
    So first up naturally for me was the cheapest. It was Royal & Langnickel Artist Paper Pad. 8 dollars on amazon. But then the reviews were flat out horrible so I figured I needed something that isn’t as cheap. I'm not trying to waste my eight dollars, I could get a super expensive coffee for that 🤣🤣
    Also, I didn’t want pallet paper. I have pallet paper and it’s shiny. I was under the impression that no one really painted on pallet paper because it’s so shiny and thin and flimsy. It’s poly-coated so it’s coated with a laminate material so it’s really shiny. It has a waxy surface. But I guess if push comes to shove you could paint on it? You could also paint on tin foil, or a potato. But is that ideal?
    Canvas paper is nice. It’s textured just like a wrapped canvas so there are divots in it. I got the strathmore canvas paper from hobby lobby and its a grey tone, so its not white. There is no bleed through because it’s really thick and it does give you that textured look. I don’t think you could wrap it around stretcher bars because it’s not as strong as cotton or linen. It’s nice, but I wanted something white and not as textured.
    Also something to consider is whether it is acid free. Acid free means that the paper was made with alkaline paper making technology. If it’s aside free it will last a super long time without becoming yellow or breaking down. So I definitely wanted acid free.
    I ended up with the U.S. Art Supply Acrylic Paper. It was 9 x 12 so that was big enough for me. The paper is really thick and the textured surface is supposed to act as an adherent for the paint so you can add layers without it wrinkling, bleeding through, or bending onto itself. It was $20.00 on amazon and I got two pads so a total of 24 sheets.
    So anyway, I hope this video helped you pick out which paper would work best for what you want to do!

    Lots of canvas paper on pads, for acrylic or oil painting.

    For any painting on paper that's warped.
    1. Paint the back with water
    2. Place an isolation sheet of paper over the wet surface
    3. Place a weight over the entire back (a piece of wood is good for this)
    4. Wait 10-15 minutes
    5. Flat!

      Can this be done before using the paper for painting? I'm trying to experiment by using cardstock for painting and am looking into different ways to prep the paper.

    Right now I use Strathmore 400 Mixed Media Paper with my acrylic paint I like my paper smooth...but I have to say it is a heavy paper and even that warps. I hate canvas because I would have room for all those paintings. LMAO at 120 years old. I have said the same thing in the past. I guess I have to check that paper out you recommended just will have to gesso it and sand it to get it smooth without the texture. Great video.

    • @TheKayPitt
      @TheKayPitt  2 года назад +1

      Oh for real? I’ll have to try it, I saw that at hobby lobby the other day. I might snatch it when I go back. And that’s a super good idea to gesso and sand it. My only concern is, I’ve been putting painters tape on it and when I peel it back up, the paper sticks to the painters tape a bit ☹️ so it makes it more rough around the edges where I taped 🤷🏻‍♀️ so idk, I wanted you to know that before you got it haha

    • @WrestlingPlayz
      @WrestlingPlayz 2 года назад +1

      @@TheKayPitt Painter's tape you have to peel it off slow not fast. If you do you possibly risk ripping the paper. You definitely have to do that if you put matt medium on the edges of the tape as I have mentioned in the other video for the sharp crisp lines. Other artists told me to pull the tape off very slowly, which works for me. You won't have to sand it much. I usually do like 2-3 coats of gesso, a 2-3 pass sand with 320 grit sandpaper. Sometimes you won't have to sand it if it already feels smooth cause there have been times I didn't sand at all it just depends on the gesso you get. I used the Liquitex gesso.

    • @TheKayPitt
      @TheKayPitt  2 года назад +1

      @@WrestlingPlayz dude I felt like I took it off pretty slow but I also left it on for a long time so that could have been it. And dope! Thank you for telling me what grit sand paper you use because I’ve gotten mixed info on what grit to use 🙌🏻🙌🏻 I’m totally trying this on my next painting

    • @WrestlingPlayz
      @WrestlingPlayz 2 года назад +1

      @@TheKayPitt Glad I could help😀 I never tried it but maybe brushing water on the border before peeling it back may work. I'm going to have to try that when I do another border artwork and see if it makes it softer to pull without messing the paper up or ripping. Usually, since I coat my tape edges with Matt Medium so I have the sharp lines it seems to peel right up when pull back slow but you still have to be careful. I remember when I had trouble figuring out which grit to use until a guy who gesso his paper mentioned 320 grit on youtube... so I bought the 9 x 12 sheets on eBay and cut them down to 4 x 4 size and taped it to a soapbox or wooden block like one of those chalkboard erasers and they work great. LOL! Just don't do a lot of passes cause if you sand more than 1-3 passes it will sand through the gesso if it's the liquid kind. (It really depends on how much gesso you put on.) It's enough to make it smooth to the touch. Let me know how your next painting goes if you don't make a video on it. If you do I'll be around to see it.

      Paint the back first with cheap paint. No more warping

  • @CaptainFutureman
    @CaptainFutureman 6 месяцев назад +1

    Well, good (cotton) watercolor paper will be able to handle countless washes of very wet paint, essentially pools and puddles of water, but keeping it flat is almost an art form in itself. Unless properly stretched or mounted, it will always end up warping or buckling. You can still save it by flattening it:
    Make the back damp, then sandwich between sheets of paper, put a flat water resistant surface on top and weigh down with books. Let it dry overnight and it will be flat. But check if it's really dry, or the last bit of moisture will make it warp again will drying outside of the press. Just replace the sheets of paper and let it dry further.
    Alternatively, since it's cotton, you can iron it. Use a hard, heat resistant! surface underneath, not a soft ironing board. The paper can handle moderate heat just fine, but go easy and don't use steam as that might be too much for the acrylic paint - it is plastic after all.
    But I would recommend stretching the paper beforehand to save yourself the headache. There's lot's of methods explained on the Tubes of You, and they all claim to work, but they lie. Look them up and use the staples on gator board method, or the bull clamps. Those are the best and easiest. Don't forget to let the painting dry completely before unfastening. If you want the paper to have a more acrylics friendly surface, prepare it with a layer of gesso.

      Omg! Thank you so much for all these tips! I’m definitely going to try the sandwich approach haha I can tell you’ve been practicing un-warping paper for a while haha comments like this are so helpful for me and I’m sure other people who watch the video and want to figure out the warping situation so seriously thank you!
      Also I just finished a painting and alas, it warped lololol but that was before I read your comment so I might try your tips first the next painting haha
