In Italy the child soldiers who preceded the armies playing the drums were called *"tamburini"* , and when they weren't employed to spread orders, they carried stretchers, assisted the injured and performed other support tasks. Unfortunately their task was very dangerous as they were positioned next to the front lines and the presence of the drum made them an easy target, in fact many of them were injured or died.
In Italy the story of Edmondo de Amicis *" il tamburino sardo"* (the little Sardinian drummer) is very famous. During the Risorgimento he was a boy of perhaps 14 years who was given the order to deliver a letter during a battle against the Austrians, as unfortunately his battalion was in great difficulty. He was chosen because he was small, healthy and fast and had more chances to pass unnoticed among the enemies, so his captain asked him to deliver a message asking for help. The boy beginned his journey, was injured almost immediately but he didn't give up and two days later reinforcements arrived. At that point the captain decided to go to the camp where the wounded were admitted to see the condition of his soldiers and among them he finded the little drummer, lying on a bed, pale and wounded and with horror he saw that he no longer had a leg and was dying. A doctor sayed the boy could have saved his leg if he had been treated immediately after being wounded, but he had continued his journey to deliver his message and this was the result of his act of courage. The captain (a rough soldier used to war) was moved, he bringed his hand to his forehead and sayed to the boy *"I'm just a captain, but you're a hero"* , so he hugged him and gived him three kisses on his heart.
People always remember soldiers but often don't know the important role these children played during wars and their often tragic destiny. In Italy their role instead is known by a lot of people and will always remain in the memory thanks to the little Sardinian drummer.

My grandfather's father was part of n army band in WWI, the last"traditional" war. He was injured and died of wounds as he was supporting comrades of his regiment of the Austro-Hungarian army, playing his clarinet on the battlefield. Just imagine....he was barely 21 years old.

It would be so nice if the BBC would make these entire episodes available to watch by people who don't live in the UK. I LOVE this show (UK, US, Australian versions), and am always so frustrated by the inability to watch them unless someone uploads them illegally. Hard to understand why these aren't made available to a wider audience. I would be happy to pay a subscription fee (if it's not sky high) to watch these shows here in the U.S.

Colquhoun isn't an Irish surname. It's a Scottish one. It comes from an area around Dumbartonshire. The name is pronounced Co-hoon, with the emphasis on the "hoon" part. The spelling is an older Scots rendition of a Gaelic place name. In Middle Scots spelling an "L" lengthens the vowel before it and is not pronounced. The "quh" combination is "wh" or a guttural "h" sound. In older Scots texts you can find combinations like "quhat" (what, pronounced hwat) or "quhar" (where, pronounced hwar). It's not that common a surname, so maybe you are related to Kate Winslett.

Children in the early 1800s were put to work even younger than 11. Childhood was not regarded as it is today; most children were regarded as little, wild people who needed strong discipline and training for work (unless wealthy). Schools were considered places to give children the ability to read the Bible and learn a trade or occupation. Kate apparently was unaware of the ubiquity of child labor even into the 20th century (and still today, in many places). Her ancestor did well to place his son where he did, setting him up for a better life.

If you are not a hero in Hollywood movies or on magazine pages, then the life of soldiers is completely anonymous and meaningless! I've seen a lot of pain, a lot of fear, so please don't take soldiers as executors don't learn of will. They are people who believe in something and try to help! If Kate Wisnslow's ancestors were vocalists, I take the fact that mine too as a positive. Although at a different time in a different social setting. Kate, I wish you good luck and love in the next life!

I think Kate’s at her most beautiful now! She’s aged so well.......not that she’s old, but bear in mind she became well known in her early 20s!

Éamonn O'Keefe, such an Irish name! 😅

The person telling her Colquhoun is an Irish name got it wrong. The Clan Colquhoun's lands are around the west bank of Loch Lomond in Scotland.
Any Colquhoun's in Ireland are descended from settlers in the Ulster Plantation.

@@targets1000 Oh, I don't know anything about that name. I'm from down south in Ireland (Munster), and don't have much knowledge of Ulster surnames. I just know that Éamonn O'Keefe is a very Irish name. 🤷🏻‍♀️

If anyone can be loved and admired in today's crazy world, it's Kate Winslet. Think what you want! It's just like that! If she didn't win more Oscars, it's just that the commission is a completely unjust bunch of incompetent dilettantes! Kate, you are our inspiration, keep working, because he is absolutely brilliant! By the way, I'm an officer for 20 years, and so are my ancestors, so we have a similar past! But I'm from the Czech Republic, but I don't think it means anything in our globally occupied world!

He may be American, Canadian or from somewhere else - so what? Seriously, so what? This country takes the best and the brightest from everywhere (just as we do in our NHS, football/soccer, financial services, etc. etc.). When I saw this, I didn't even notice it, so thanks.

The Drum Major's "cane" as the historian cutely calls it... is generally referred to, much more in the Martial Spirit, as his Mace. There are camps for young DMs and competitions for the creative use (twirling) of said mace. Very cool he became a DM !

The prevailing terms employed during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries were cane or staff, not mace - hence my word choice.
