- This Economy engine has been in the shop for a while just waiting for some more attention. I made a base for it and fitted the ignition underneath, let's fire it up and see what else needs to be done to make this old girl a good running engine. This will give us a chance to look a bit deeper into its past and the way it was built. Thank you all for watching, commenting, and subscribing. You guy's are great!
Most likely too much cylinder oil in the past. I'll bet just cleaning and freeing up the ring(s) is all that is needed to restore compression. Give the cylinder a hone too. Great video!

They are a fun hobby especially if you enjoy tinkering with things. The HM-01 engine from Stirlingkit has been the best new ready to run (or kit form) that I have seen for sale so far 👍
Mr 212, love to see this again and anticipate it running well. If it was me, I'd get the ignition much closer to TDC for maximum power at slowest rpm and therefore that single big hit before the nice long miss (spring permitting). Is this an ebay purchase? Would be expensive, what range?
I can't wait to get her running properly again, I'm sure there will be some fiddling with the timing and the governor spring also coming up. Yes this came from ebay. To be fair the seller was a 3rd party that was selling it for the family of the builder who had passed. The seller knew nothing about the engine other than it turned over, and me (loving a challenge) turned out to be the highest bidder. When it arrived, the box was in terrible shape, the rear axle on the truck was snapped in 2, the oiler was broken off in the cylinder, and the crankshaft was bent. I contacted the seller who offered to file an insurance claim with the shipper but I knew that they would just reimburse the cost and destroy the package (including the contents) within the box were a couple of clippings from when the builder displayed it. After seeing and reading them, I knew that I couldn't let that happen to this little engine. The seller offered to refund the shipping amount and I agreed, the engine is still here and in some ways STILL being displayed which is the way I think "he" would have wanted it. Honestly when it comes to the cost, I probably could have found a full size one (in comparable mechanical condition) for about the same price. But this one needed our help not to mention that it's much easier to move and store 🙂. @@inventivemachinist8747 That would be great to have if I ever run across another one. I did get this one completed and running but I am not 100% happy with the crankshaft. Maybe I will need to make a new one for it.

good day. this brings me back to an earlier question i had about the fuel used in these. after looking at the amount of carbon residuals on that head and the rings i had a thought related to an old memory. i remember a washing machine that my great grandmother had that she kept going for some reason known to her and her only (lived in the great depression). it was one of those two stroke units. my great grandfather mixed the fuel for it. 95 ~+ alcohol and regular mineral oil. supposedly to keep the 'gunk' down inside the engine. that memory goes back 55 years. i have to wonder if these little wonders would run on that kind of mixture.
That sounds like a fantastic experiment (I don't know why it wouldn't work) I'll get this one back together and running right and we'll give it a shot. Thanks for the suggestion

Hey if you are looking to buy a beginner hit and miss engine, I would recommend a fairbanks morse dishpan 1.5 hp they are real nice engines.
I felt so sorry for this engine when I opened it up "oh no, you poor little thing, we'll get you feeling better soon" Are you looking for a model hit and miss or a full size one? Like Kevin said Fairbanks Morse built great engines that are pretty common to find still but Hercules hit and miss engines are another great option. If you're looking for a model engine though, I have been really impressed with the HM-01 from Stirlingkit.
@steam212 Yes you are correct Hercules is also a great option, as well as the hm 01 I got one and it is a great model! Definitely the best one they have made. Just had to put a softer govn spring and a softer spring on the exhaust pushrod and she runs nice and slow now.
