    Thanks for posting this Stephen! Very detailed. My '08 Burger has been sitting for 6 months and with the battery on a tender, it wouldn't crank at first. Finally cranked and turned over after about 8 rapid hits with the starter button. After that it was hit and miss. I thought the starter motor packed it in since I could hear the solenoid click. I used your test procedure and concluded I had a intermittent solenoid. For whatever reason, it's working about 80% of the time now, but I can always get it cranking by rapid fire with the starter switch. I've been looking all over for how to get the solenoid out of the Burgman's without removing all the front fairing and your post is the closest I've seen. I just need to spend some time with it a bit more to see if I can remove it easily using your method. Thanks again.

    My 2007 is having the same problem. At first I thought it was bad break switches but after replacement of both of those I believe this is the problem. It happens alot when the bike is warm too. So hopefully when my new relay is here it will fix the problem

    I have a 650 Burg and today I was riding with no issues for about 3 hours. It started fine when I started the day. Pulled over to take some pics of the scenery and turned motor off. A couple of minutes later I go to start and no crank. Horn and lights don't work, but battery under the seat works. I thought I heard a click noise while riding just a few minutes prior to pulling over to take pics. Does this sound like a relay issue? I am thinking if it was the battery then I would of probably noticed it lagging when starting, but it started normally.

    Final -- for information, it was the battery. After replacing the 30AMP fuse I blew during troubleshooting (hooked the dang car battery up + to- and - to +), started with the car battery. so bought a new battery. On the road again. I was amazed as the day it would not start, seemed to be cranking over good - had no idea it would be the battery.

    Question, I own an 08 650 I have the same problem and watched your video and used a Pliers to turn it over and it did just that without starting, so I replaced a new relay switch and nothing! Any other ideas what could be going on with it??? Hate to take it to the shop here where I live they rob you blind! Any help would be appreciated!!! Thx!!!

    UPDATE. It's my battery (99% sure). However, I screwed up when trouble shooting (connected another battery to the scooter but reversed the leads. hoping it is jsut the 30 amp fuse damaged???.
    Long Story follows: I finally got to check things (Feb 8 after fail to start Dec 10 -- LAZY). I had been keeping battery on trickle charger of and on (pulsing charger that de-sulfates plates they say). Anyway, I had the charger on for a day before FEB 8. Battery read 13.4V. Turned key on and saw 11.1 v (headlights come on), hit start switch head lights go out when activating start button), saw 8.8v for an instant and scooter started. Happy Day. Turned off and tried to restart and it would not. Unhappy Day, but made me thing battery is weak (it's very old Yuasa battery).
    Did some more battery checks by charging and checking battery with key on, etc.. Even hooked up my Car charger and let it Charge, turned key on (car charger still connected) and had bright lights. Hit start button and had nothing (everything went dead). I was sure it was the scooter battery even thought it would charge up.
    Worried my car charger got damaged - hooked it up to the car (all OK).
    Anyway, to convince myself it was the scooter battery, I took battery from car and sat it on the floor. Disconnected leads from scooter battery and connected jumper cables to the the scooter leads. Then went to connect jumper cable to the car battery. SCREWED up Big Time and reversed leads at battery (+ and -). I had a slight spark when I connected the leads at battery and had a buzz from scooter. Think I turned key on but course had nothing (no lights, etc.). Very frustrated with myself. HOPE it is just a fuse, have not done anything to check it at this time Feb 10.
    This post showing location of the starter relay and fuses along with the schematic is great. THANKS.

    I been searching for - why mine want start. Not a problem with the start motor turning the engine over. I stopped for gas and then it would not start. Guessing Fuel Pump, Spark, doubt it's a compression problem. Having hard time finding how to get to the spark plug (check spark) and to the fuel pump (and how to check if it is working). Plus what needs to come off (seat, covers, etc.).

    • @stephenkcox3891

      Here is some things to check.
      So maintenance things. I put in new spark plug in when I change the oil and filter. it/they are cheep. Check / change air filter and gas filter. if it does not have gas filter one in. Still cheep.
      Find the gas line to carburetor and check fuel pressure.
      You last got gas. May have bad gas or water in gas. Get the gas out.
      Next your looking at cleaning out carburetor.
      If you have the spark plug out you can check for spark. This leads to 50% chance of getting the PI?? shocked out of you. If you get shocked spark is good. Ha.. use plyers and hold it close to a ground. Crank engine. You will need help.
      Sorry you having problems..

      @@stephenkcox3891 Thanks -- I have not looked at it yet. I need to start taking things apart (to find spark plug, fuel pump, etc.). First see if Battery is dying. I did charge it and had high voltage after charge (think was 12.5V). I have never changed spark plug or adjusted valves am at near 80,000 miles. Been running good until the event.

    I got stuck with my Burgman at the grocery store. Dying/dead battery. Could I have had someone with a car jump start my scooter. What is the best way? I heard if I did the ..the car person would have to make sure they did not have their car running. Is this true?

    • @stephenkcox3891
      @stephenkcox3891  Год назад

      Both car and Bike are 12vdc Systems. Car jumps up to 14VDC when running and so does your bike. So its good to have the car running. Obviously make real sure the terminals do not get crossed, +to+ -to-. Make sure center stand is down and side stand is up. If rear tire is down it can lurch forward when it starts.

  • @paulmedley1679
    @paulmedley1679 Год назад +1

    Maybe, I do understand. Think you said the center stand down will bypass the other safety relays and engine would start. So if you are checking start motor by jumping the start relay terminals and have center stand up - then safety relays will be active and since center stand is down the coil will not have voltage and engine will not start (just the start motor will turn). Am I correct?

    • @allenhumphreys2586
      @allenhumphreys2586 Год назад +1

      The Burgman 400 does not have a center-stand switch, it has a side-stand switch.

    • @stephenkcox3891
      @stephenkcox3891  Год назад +1

      Look at the schematic. If you jump the starter relay the starter will kick and may start the bike. Center stand keeps the back wheel off the ground so if the bike starts it will not take off be its self. This id bad..

    • @allenhumphreys2586
      @allenhumphreys2586 Год назад +1

      When you jump the large cable/screw terminals on the starter relay, the starter motor will turn irregardless of anything else, is a direct path from battery to starter. The scooter will only start/fire when all other conditions for a normal start are met, key on, side-stand up, brake lever pulled, engine stop switch on. In either case the position of the center-stand is irrelevant, is just safer to have it down when you are not sitting on scooter.

      @@allenhumphreys2586 Ya what you said. I had an older bike and it took off on me when I jump starter it. I was trying to get it to run and it did. Ha

    • @paulmedley1679
      @paulmedley1679 Год назад

      @@stephenkcox3891 Did you not say center stand up? I reads that statement to mean side stand down. So safety relays would allow jump start relay and hear starter motor turn, but engine not start cause no voltage to coil. Your engine did not start. I also understand if Center stand down (wheel off ground) if motor starts, would not move scooter. My thought would be Center stand down (so wheel off ground) and Side stand also down, so engine would not start if you jump the start relay. I'm getting confused.
      Course none of that is related to my issue (the starter motor is turning engine over). I liked the video as to check to see if starter relay is problem and if starter motor turns over.

    burgman 400:
    I turn key on , snd i hear the clicking of the relay, trying to engage the Starter Motor.
    i jump the Terminal and the starter motor turns the engine over.
    It wont start, just turns over. I double checked the safety features making sure one of them wasn't preventing me from ignition. No luck. Won't strat via jumping the relay only Turns over.
    i have a relay coming if the Chinese ever get around vto put in the Mail.

      the click the the starter solenoid, so all the interlocks are working.
      if it just click it could just be the battery is to week to start it. AutoZone will test it for free.
      Air, gas, spark, starter turning, battery. Its one of these.

      Update: Relay arrived. and installed.
      Charge up the battery %100. And now it turns over, Sounds little weak. But still turning over. Would not start. I Hear the fuel pump sounds weak. Im thinking it should be starting. But still nothing. I put a 40amp boost with the Battery charger Starts right up and Runs fine. I ordered a New Lithium Battery. hope they work better.. Lead acid moto batts always been junk. Cooler outside temps battery don't like.
