- Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the middle ages and crusades continues with the first video in our series on the Second Crusade. Previously, we have covered the First ( • First Crusade - Full S... ), Third ( • Third Crusade 1189-119... ) and Fourth Crusades ( • Fourth Crusade: From S... ) and our coverage starts with the battle of Ager Sanguinis - the Field of Blood in 1119, as the rise of Ilghazi of the Artukids threatens the Crusader states leading to the clash with Roger of Salerno and the Principate of Antioch ( • Ager Sanguinis 1119 - ... ). In the aftermath, Ilghazi continued to attack the Crusader territory, leading to the battle of Hab, as king Baldwin counterattacked ( • Battle of Hab 1119 - B... ). In the third episode we described the fate of Ilghazi and the battle of Didgori ( • Battle of Didgori 1121... ), Baldwin's captivity, Venetian Crusade of 1122-1124 and the Battle of Tyre ( • Venetian Crusade 1122-... ), while the episode 4 will cover the battle of Azaz, during which the Crusaders managed to turn the tide ( • Battle of Azaz - Crusa... ), while the 5th described the Damascene Crusade, as the Crusaders attacked the Emirate of Damascus in another failed crusade, as well as the appearance of the Nizari Assassins in the region.

I have some sympathy for Baldwin II. He wanted to expand his realm only to become frustrated at every turn. Nice video.
Balkdwin II got stopped by a mere bridge. Shows how he was not a military genius.
Saladin is considered a military genius by some even though he lost more battles than he won even though he always outnumbered his enemies. I'd say the bar for being a military genius is pretty low.
@@zjeee Saladin was a master of the "Fabian Strategy" which involves not directly engaging the enemy until you have worn down their supply and their morale, such as at the Battle of Hattin, or the subsequent 3rd Crusade against Richard the Lionheart, though Richard kept winning battles, he couldn't change the strategic situation enough to counteract the effects of Saladin's Fabian Strategy.

@@zjeee---I read the Encyclopedia of Military History once and it said that Belisarius was the last military genius to come along in many centuries. It said that Saladin and Richard the Lionhearted were both competent military leaders. Not genius's.

Zengi was the founder of the Zengid Dynasty, and Nur ad-Din was one of his sons.

A defeat in major battle but certainly good news for the crusaders for a change, finally succession is secured, reinforcements arrive from Europe, new heir to antioch seems capable enough, victory at Marj al Saffar, Capture of Marfaniya,Banyas is taken without loss, the assassins come to the frankish side rather than the sunni side, civil strife between edessa and antioch is avoided.

Again in the thumbnail it says "The Second Crusade". 2nd Crusade started 1147 and ended 1150. Come on Kings And Generals you can do better than this.
We have explained it numerous times. Yes, the Crusade starts later, but our series on this crusade includes its prelude. Similar to how we talked about Manzikert before the First Crusade.

Only the Ayyubids are a dynasty of Arab origin. They are a Turkified dynasty because they were slaves of the Zengi Dynasty. They are a failed, thieving, immoral, liar dynasty. They have no success other than taking Jerusalem. And They will give it back to the infidels in the 5-6th Crusades. What really saved Jerusalem were the Khwarezm Oghuz Turks who survived the Mongol Oppression.
