This album was huge for VH, so many copies sold you'd end up with a tape in your car, didn't even buy it, no idea where it came from, perfect production in Ed's studio he built at his house, they could take all the time they needed for this release and it paid of in spades.

    One last comment suggestion.
Your next live reaction video of Halen needs to be Van Halens "Live without a net" concert you can find on RUclips.
It's right after they split with David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar joined. Eddie and Alex were peaking.

When I was 18, my best friend stood in line all night for Van Halen tickets in Detroit for the 1984 tour. We got 3rd row main floor, center stage. That concert was absolutely epic!
Drop Dead Legs was my favorite but it never hit the radio airwaves, you had to own the album. That song is called "LIVIN"!!!!!

  • @NotBenCoultry

23:24 - yeah it's the difference in Eddie and then the addition of Sammy (advice: listen as though it's a new band/diff experience) on the next 3 albums that makes this my favorite era, that and this is the one I grew up with. Had my nose pressed against the TV glass at 6 years old when Jump was new - the synth, an Oberheim Ob-Xa: thats a set of chords played over the same bass note (that's what's called a pedal tone, refers to a function of pipe organs but became the name of the technique.) 2 and half mins into the music video is a clip of Eddie playing arpeggiated chords over a shifting bass note in his left hand, synth's all dusty lmao. Just found something awesome on the "doctor mix" channel: "Van Halen "Jump" Synthesizer Reconstructed"
    - Panama - That bridge and b-part before the final chorus has been one of my favorite moments in music since I first heard this as a mini-ben.
Damn it "the snow white is snowin" made me cough out a whole hit lmaooo
34:45 Eddie is just in top form on this album. 37:30 arguing with his guitar over which key to play in. From now on I'll be thinking of Drop Dead Legs as the spaghetti sandwich of 1984
House of Pain feels like it was written during the Fair Warning sessions.

Hey Mug, I missed the Livestream, but I'm here watching the whole thing.
I have an idea that would be unique and interesting for us VH fans. You're going to listen to Van Hagar. That's good. The first 3 albums are good.
But, what you could do is compare the first album "5150" with David Lee Roth s first solo album, "Eat 'Em and Smile". I think everyone would love to hear your comparisons to those head-to-head albums.

It was energized cuz this was the 1st album recorded at Eddie's house at his 5150 studios where he had the complete freedom to do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted without Warner bros records breathing down their necks plus they had over a year to record it whereas Diver Down was basically slapped together in 3 weeks cuz the label demanded it.

Thanks, Mugs, for the trip down memory lane. You've reached my end of prime VH. Sure, there's good stuff beyond this era, but the DLR voice and producer Ted Templeman's touch on the VH tone was never matched. Sadly, what was left of DLR's voice was laid down on solo records. I always wondered what a couple more records with DLR and Templeman would've been consdering DLR's solo work. Onward and upward. 😉

As time goes by you kinda get to wondering if you don’t look back at the music you liked when you were younger and think maybe it was just you making it out to be more than it actually was. Danny Carey and Steve Vai are joining with 2 members of the 80's lineup of King Crimson. Adrian Belew and Tony Levin to celebrate the 3 albums that they made with Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford, who both declined involvement, but gave their blessing. You don't know how right you are about Eddie and Alex taking center stage on this one. Since the studio was on Eddie's property, he and Alex practically lived their during recording which sort of boxed Dave, Mike, and the producer out somewhat. Dave had to do all his co-writing offsite.

The first time we heard Edward on the keyboard. This is a great song, the guitar solo and drums during it is badass! Hey Mug! I've totally enjoy listening to your videos about VH. Your intuitions are so right on about when they are "not feelin' it" and when they are totally VAN HALEN and all involved. You have a keen instinctual feeling for this. And it is a pleasure to watch you enjoy this fabulous band because I feel the same way! Now that you are coming up to the Sammy years, it would be amazing to have you react to the "Live Without a Net" live concert video in New Haven, CT! (renamed 'New Halen' for this concert) However, since you say you have not seen live David Lee Roth performing with Van Halen yet, we can suggest a few live videos to watch to see DLR's amazing charisma. (Your intuition about him was totally correct- he was totally a ladies man!) Their live concerts were epic!
