I don't think it's true that the subjunctive is dying out. Maybe we have this perception because we hear more and more people speaking "casual" Italian on the media and we use a more simplified language when texting, but the subjunctive is still the standard for written Italian in books, newspapers, the news, dubbed movies etc. and the only acceptable way of speaking in higher education. It's not going to die anytime soon.
A use of the subjunctive that wasn't mentioned in the video is in subordinate clauses like "penso che..." (I think that...), "voglio che..." (I want ... to ...), "sembra che" (it seems that ...). Those are very common phrases where it's just natural for Italian speakers to use the subjunctive and using the present instead just sounds wrong. You can spot a non-native speaker immediately when they use the present in those clauses.
I believe it should all be "If I were..", not "If I was...". It's the English subjunctive.
La mia lingua materna è il portoghese e c´è anche il congiuntivo e condizionali quindi per me non è molto dificile, e non trovo che sia cosí dificile per i parlanti delle altre lingue.

Nel portoghese il congiuntivo del futuro ancora si utilizza. Per esempio, "Se chover, ficarei/vou ficar em casa" (Si piove, resterò in casa)

Bad news for students of the Italian language: subjunctive is NOT dying out. You’d better learn it if you want to communicate correctly when constructing hypotheses. If an Italian native speaker does not manage to use it correctly he/she is considered ignorant, it is not regarded as something “normal”. Obviously, Italians will be a lot more tolerant with a foreigner who is learning!
Ma che cavolo stai dicendo , mettiti nei panni dei pischelli che si rivolgono a dei loro coetanei , anzi nello 'slang' italiano uno fa a meno del congiuntivo soprattutto in circostanze familiari. Poi se fai un colloquio di lavoro , oppure prenoti un tavolo , fai qualsiasi cosa dove parli dando del lei allora usi anche il congiuntivo. È inutile al 75%
Gegio groß si vede che frequentiamo ambienti diversi. A casa mia il congiuntivo si è sempre usato anche in casa e se lo sbagliavi ti correggevano...
E no, non sono d’accordo. Il congiuntivo è estremamente utile quando si costruiscono ipotesi, specie se complesse.

Io, personalmente, riprendo sempre chi lo sbaglia, non sono esente da errori e sono abituato ad essere ripreso quando sbaglio, in famiglia parlo dialetto e nel mio dialetto il congiuntivo non esiste, quindi li il problema non si pone.
@@matt04eldorado76 se utilizzi prevalentemente lo 'slang' nella vita quotidiana, al momento di sostenere un colloquio di lavoro sarai impacciato il triplo; come per tante altre cose ci vuole esercizio costante, non ci sono pulsanti che puoi premere all'occorrenza. Poi, volendo ci si può intendere anche a gesti, ma quello è un altro discorso.

I may be one of the very few, but as a learner of Italian I like the subjunctive and don't find it too difficult. I found the best way to learn it for me was to get a list of a dozen or so phrases that "set off" the subjunctive and learn them well to start to understand why and in which contexts it's used, and it helped so much. As you go on from there, you will pick up more and more phrases that set it off and get a natural feeling when it should arise. Elfin is spot on that it has it's own sound. Also, there are plenty of ways to avoid it too (ie "secondo me" vs "penso che") so you don't have to jump straight into the deep end if you don't want. The language could probably get by without it, like we almost have in English, but I agree that it would make the language a bit blander, a bit less poetic.
I'm fairly certain that the English translation was wrong. The English subjunctive should be "If I were king" instead of "if I was a king". Common English mistake
"If I was king" is just as correct as "If I were king". Americans say the former, British say the latter, generally.
@@acrxsls1766 Can't agree with that. It's definitely not a regional difference here. If Americans tend to say "if I was a king" more frequently, I'd assume that they just speak English less correctly in general. I do recall hearing grammatical mistakes like "less people" more often in the states than in the UK. If you're going so far as to claim that "the way the majority of people speak should be deemed the correct way", that's fine with me, and even many linguists would argue for that. But then there's also no need for us to discuss grammar anymore.
@@acrxsls1766 According to literary standard English "If I were" is correct if you are describing a hypothetical situation and "If I was" is wrong. There are a lot of things deemed incorrect in written language that are common in spoken language.
I actually hear and read “if I was” more in British English. It seems to be perfectly standard there
@Саня Фаня As a linguist, I can say with 100% certainty that you are absolutely correct. ''If I was a king'' is incorrect. Unfortunately, English grammar sometimes doesn't get much respect.

Sono Olandese, ho imparato l' Italiano trenta anni fa a Siena, a me mi piacievano molto tutti questi formi verbali. Uso anche parrecchio il passato remoto, coppiavo piú o meno il parlato dei Senesi. Certamente faccio errori. Adesso sto studiando lo Spagnolo, quindi insalata latina nella testa, peró il systema dei verbi é molto simile. And yes, I did ask for a donkey on my toast.

I don't speak Italian, my native language is Spanish and somehow I understood what they were saying. Italian and Spanish are so similar!
only fonetically, but the writing is more similar to french than spanish, in fact italian is a little more close to french than to spanish as a whole, some ancient italian words that are not used anymore were even more close to french.
From the spanish point of view Portuguese and Catalan are the closest, then comes Italian and then French and Romanian. I would say that you can learn Portuguese and Catalan in a month, Italian in 3 months, French in 6 months and Romanian in about a year.
Hispanics are lucky on that since we also have subjunctive in spanish and then it's already easy when learning Italian.

L'inglese non è l'unica lingua importante al mondo. Parlare l'italiano è tanto importante in Italia quanto lo è l'inglese "in Britain". Che alcuni utilizzino male alcune forme grammaticali lo si sa, ma che quello non sia un problema..... è una cavolata. Gli stranieri che vogliono parlare l'italiano come si deve possono leggere la rivista "Internazionale", i testi di Italo Calvino e "studiare" i libri di linguistica italiana dell'edizione Zingaretti secondo volume. Ma attenzione, il libro non è una passeggiata e molti insegnanti (compresa la ragazza che dicessi 'insegnante di italiano') potrebbero essere in difficoltà a decifrarlo.
Could someone please explain me whats so difficult about the Italian conjunctive!? As a French, Portuguese and Spanish speaker I don't get whats the big deal about it. We also use the conjunctive a lot in those languages and it's not difficult.
Meanwhile im here as non-native speaker of english wondering what 'conjunctive' really means.
@@el3743 its an special verbal form used to express wishes or irrealistic situations. There's also a conjunctive form in English, but it's very simple and most of the time we don't notice any difference at all, only in some case, as for example: "if I were a cat, I'd sleep all day". I was = indicative simple past. I were = past conjunctive. In the romance languages it's WAYYY more complicated and if you don't use the conjunctive correctly, you may sound uneducated or even stupid. It seems to be even more complicated in Italian, but I don't get exactly why...
@@Juniorfoxnetdude well that's because you are used to it. If something doesn't exist in your language you struggle to understand its reason and usage and how and when to apply the rules. I have a Germanic background (German, English, Dutch...) and I struggle severely with the condizionale/congiuntivo because I just don't get the point.
Porque no existe en inglés. Pues, existía y sigue en un par de verbos pero hemos perdido como usarlo.

Cosa penso di congiuntivo..sono polacco, noi non abbiamo il modo come congiunctivo quindi devo forse ricordo quando si usare questo. Nella nostra lingua, per dire qualcosa come congiunctivo in italiano, noi usiamo il doppio condizionale - per il primo e secondo verbo. E noi ci capiamo ;)

No entiendo dónde está la dificultad del subjuntivo. Una cosa es usarlo, todo el muy lo usa sin problema. Otra cosa es que te pregunten ¿Cuál es la primera persona del singular del futuro pluscuamperfecto de subjuntivo del verbo comprar? Entonces, quizás no sepas decir: yo hubiera o hubiese comprado. Pero ningún hablante nativo de lengua romance tiene dificultades para su empleo. Así que no comprendo realmente el contenido del vídeo.
Personalmente, penso che il congiuntivo sia facile. Ho amici che non lo capiscono a causa dei tutti i cambi dei verbi.
Da tedesca avrò per sempre delle difficoltà con la differenza tra il condizionale e il congiuntivo e quando usare passato prossimo o imperfetto.

è vero che sta scomparendo e, in molti casi, viene usato il condizionale al suo posto: "se io farei" mi fa rabbrividire.
un vantaggio dell'estinzione del congiuntivo è che farà tirare un profondo sospiro di sollievo ai futuri studenti della lingua.

It would help if your English subtitles were in the subjunctive as well... e.g. "If I were king". It does exist in English, but it's less frequent than in Italian (or French and other romance languages I imagine), sometimes barely noticeable and many learners are taught that the present (indicative) form is also acceptable. What's interesting is that the subjunctive is more common in formal U.S. English than in British English, which I find funny given the stereotype that the Brits are (usually) way more formal than Americans ;)
But I think it's crucial to learn it in Italian (and thank you for making a video about it with real, 'street' Italian speakers) once you get to a certain level, whereas in English it is usually reserved for formal writing and speeches. The Guardian styleguide says this: "As with the hyper-corrective misuse of whom instead of who, however, using the subjunctive wrongly is worse than not using it at all, and will make you look pompous and silly".

For me it is a lot about sound. English is all about ease and rhythm. We prefer shorter easier words and drop as much grammar when speaking as possible. We speak with so much slang and imperfect grammar but it suits it's purpose. Italian is all about sound, flow and beauty. That's the whole reason why it has masculine feminine, it just sounds nicer and more poetic. Most of the time it is about sentence flow. Penso che e' possibile is horrible and catches in your throat. Penso che sia o se avessi avuto flows much better and sounds nicer than penso che e' or se avevo avuto. It would be such a shame if you were to lose it and become like us imbicile English losing our great language haha. You will end up like us haying 'a bin' instead of 'I have been' or a nice come va o buongiorno into what you sometimes hear from kids now that say just 'come'.
Penso che il congiuntuvo sia molto importante. Tutte le forme gramatticale in italiano sono importante per la struttura e storia della lingua. Penso che il passato remoto sia molto bello e importante anche. Ho letto il libro 'Eragon' tutto in italiano e mi e' piacuto un casino. Mi sembra piu' poetico, piu' bello e giusto perche' la storia fu tante mille di anni fa. Fu costruito invece di era costruito lui mori, ando' taque ecc. Ovviamente quando si parla sembra un po' strano dire 'una volta io andai blah blah blah' ma segonda me ha un funzione. Quando una persona dice se fossi, se avessi e' chiaro cosa vuole dire. Se dicesse 'se ero, se avevo, non sarebbe chiaro se vuol dire una cosa vera o ipotetico.

Anzi, è piuttosto una caratteristica unica dell'inglese di non averlo.

Ciao, pur esssendo in sostanza germanofono il congiuntivo non mi ha mai posto problemi,
il congiuntivo italiano è molto più logico di quello francese (orribile dal punto di vista della concordanza dei tempi) e quello spagnolo (anche lì delle incongruenze logiche). Ciò che veramente è un problema per germanofoni è la distinzione tra passato prossimo e imperfetto. Questa differenza si deve in molti casi intuire, ma il congiuntivo lo si può studiare e poi si deve applicare i criteri (d'accordo sono parecchi, ma la cosa è fattibile).

Good video! My brother studied languages at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in California. The pace of study was intense. Students had to master the language course in 36-64 weeks. Psychologically it was very difficult, but fortunately he was helped by Yuriy Ivantsiv's book "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages”. The book " Polyglot Notes" became a desk book for my brother, because it has answers to all the problems that any student of a foreign language has to face. Si dice: "Io so che la tal cosa è..." (col presente).
Ed invece si dice: "Io penso che la tal cosa sia..." (col congiuntivo)
Questi sono i due casi in cui anche molti italiani fanno confusione e sbagliano, quasi nessuno invece sbaglia nelle costruzioni verbali ipotetiche, che sono semplici ed ovvie ("Se io fossi ricco...").
La differenza sta nel fatto che nel primo caso una determinata cosa è certa (la si sa), nella seconda che è possibile (la si pensa) ma non certa al 100%.
Quindi usano il presente tutte le frasi tipo: so che; sono certo/sicuro che; ecc.
Mentre usano il congiuntivo tutte le frasi tipo: ritengo che; penso che; é probabile che; ecc.
Eh se non sbaglierei il congiuntivo ci mancheresse

Funny, questo discorso mi riporta trent´anni indietro quando studiavo alla scuola di lingua per stranieri di Siena, dove mi hanno fatto leggere un articolo sull ¨ uso modale dell´imperfetto:
¨Se lo sapevo non ci andavo¨.
Certamente ci si risparmia un bel numero di sillabi rispetto a:
¨Se lo avessi saputo non ci sarei andato¨
L'uso del congiuntivo da parte delle persone di madrelingua dipende dalla formazione linguistica che abbiamo ricevuto. È una questione di logica e il consiglio che posso dare, da insegnante, è di non averne paura e nello stesso tempo di non voler semplificare la lingua (come fanno, purtroppo, molti miei connazionali!
It's more interesting than difficult because for instance in my language there isn't such a one. It's interesting also to think how to translate it in my on language in different connections. Your site is wonderful! Great to learn from it!

Il congiuntivo fa parte del dialetto.
Se lo sbagli si capisce che tu non sei di origine toscana.
Ma attenzione: è storpiato dal dialetto. Es: " bisogna che "andìa" dal dottore. In italiano è " bisogna che VADA dal medico.
Ma se non lo usi beh non sei toscano no no.
Inoltre vorrei aggiungere che nel congiuntivo il soggetto non può essere sottinteso alla 2ª e alla 3ª persona singolare perché non cambia la declinazione.
Se dico "Bisogna che vada dal medico", sono solo IO che ci vado per chi ascolta. Perché se sei tu che ne hai bisogno o lui/lei devo per forza dire "Bisogna che TU vada o che LEI vada ... se no non si capisce.
E poi vorrei sottolineare di nuovo che per un toscano le frasi con il congiuntivo sbagliato non "suonano" all'orecchio. Sono pesanti. Perdono di musicalità.
