Unpopular opinion, but I'm all for TC. I think it makes plants accessible to those on lower incomes (like myself!) as well as gives us the numbers needed to keep garden centres open for the masses. And as you said, it helps to potentially avoid poaching

And to all the haters here. If you still didn't get her message... Don't even waste your breath trying to upset her 😂😂
Tissue culture is an awesome thing. I took an orchid class from a local greenhouse Owner... who just happened to be a retired professor at a prestigious college that did the groundwork on the tissue replication that is used for the common day "cloning" experiments with living creatures (Dolly the sheep) The technology started with orchid tissue culture. This professor was "obsessed" with orchids, and traveled all over collecting rare and engaged orchids hoping to TC them and save the species... well it worked and now that technology developed for orchids has now been main streamed. You do not know how tough this TC plants are until you see how teeny tiny these plants start and what they overcome to survive, they truly are survivors. As you said Kaylee Ellen, the ending plant is only a good as the mother plant. I wish I could get you in touch with this gentleman... he still TC's some orchids in his greenhouse in test tubes... it's AMAZING! Pennsylvania USA
Hi Kaylee thank-you for explaining the tissue culture myth so well. As I biologist I despair when people slag off T.C plants. As you say, it’s cloning on a micro scale not really any different from taking cuttings and it’s the genetics of the mother plant that matters. Well done you!
Have you ever considered moving back home and opening up your shop there? When you next need to move to a larger unit? That way you have the support of your family and friends, they can occasionally help out if needed, your mum might start working at your shop and you have at least some kind of support system and not only working all the time? Especially now you're no longer a programmer, your shop could literally be based anywhere with a large unit. Just a thought 👍
I like the spirit of the shirt but JK Rowling is a huge TERF. If she didn’t get any money from the sale of your shirt, cool. But there are way better groups or businesses to support, as well as cute designs as you mention in the video.
If you’re looking for pride merch, you should support small, queer owned businesses! This isn’t meant to be pushy, It’s just extremely important to support these people, especially since a lot of us are also donating proceeds to non-profits! Plus it’s extra gay when made by gay hands ❤️❤️ Also I LOVED this video, it’s so fun to just listen to you talk!
Please if you know of any charities in SWFL let me know. I am the supervisor of a nonprofit organization which gives all kinds of patients free eye care, medications and surgeries. I would love to partner up. Thank you
Yes, agreed! And while I too used to love Harry Potter, I'm hesitant about supporting its author, who has expressed her very clear transphobic views in a multitude of ways. I really appreciate Kaylee's open support of the LGBT+ community as a whole, I just think that the Ts are often unintentionally neglected in the grand scheme of things!
Since I can’t respond to your current Instagram-Story and I know you’re reading the comments: Kaylee I just just want so reassure you - and I’m sure you do know this yourself- you are amazing! Please don’t let those haters get you down, I know it’s easy to say. I’ve never seen anyone this passionate and determined. And thank you so much for sharing your knowledge 🙂 Greetings from Cologne, Germany
Darcy… Lol what is that supposed to mean? “She only shares it if it doesn’t hurt her purse..” are you serious right now? If you owned a business, would you tell EVERYONE EVERYTHING about where you get your shit? Well, you probably would since you don’t understand why she doesn’t share every little fucking detail. If she were to do that, people would start trying to buy from her sellers and that is going to create multiple problems for multiple people. One, her sellers might just be bulk sellers and they aren’t going to sell to someone who is just looking for a couple plants..therefore, that particular seller is going to be more than likely pissed that so many people are trying to buy one or two plants from them and it will eventually probably come back on Kaylee. TWO! She loses business…? Duh? The whole point of owning a fucking business is to make money. 🤦🏼♀️ THREE! Even if her sellers DID sell a plants in smaller quantities for everyday houseplant lovers to buy, she is still losing business and that completely defeats the purpose of owning a business. No she isn’t going to share “trade secrets” because, again, it would create multiple problems with multiple people. If she tells the entire world exactly how to TC a plant, for example, the plant business would probably fall apart. Your comment really shows how ignorant you really are. Fuck off.
I think the issue people have with TC is that the plants are being produced in a lab. A lot of people are opposed to lab work in general, like GMO food, vaccines, etc. Which is lack of education on the topic, in my opinion. Of course, the rumor about plants being weaker may have come from the fact that weak mother plants are being used, but the lab thing is something to consider as well.
It’s just propagation on a tiny scale. As Kaylee explains in her video the lab part is just to bring on the tiny plants till they are strong enough to survive ‘normal’ conditions. Think of it like a premature baby in an incubator.
Hoya stressed with light, heat, lack of water and high humidity will bloom more. If you have it in more shade you'll have greener leaves but it won't really bloom. Many varieties also go through monsoonal dry spells in their natural environment. So going from wet to dry periods will induce growth. Gotta research the variety and see what that variety desires. There's not one clear answer except more shade will result in less blooms and greener leaves but less or no flowers.
Thanks for these tips. My hoya shooting star was about to bloom, had 6 penducles. I watered it and all the blooms blasted the next day 😭. I was so proud of myself..then disappointed
They say it is a sign of stress*. The way we put spider* plant under the sun and they give babies or orchids with too much indirect light give blooms... but I did not know about lack of water, now I am happy that I am scared of overwatering and rootrot and check them a lot before I water.
There was a major Thailand Hoya collection the curator of some 400 varieties talks about them growing pretty much all their Hoya in 60% shade cloth. They look super healthy and green but bloom very very little. Those in direct sun look sickly and their colors are muted green to yellowish green minus the ones that show amazing reds in sunlight. Those stressed and neglected tend to bloom more but don't look healthy. To keep them healthy they leave most of them in more shade.
hoya love to be root bound with high humidity and warmth, they come from countries like the philippines where humidity and warmth is super high to the point where you’ll be sticky while ur sleeping, that’ll help them a lot,
For hoya blooms most like being semi or mostly root bound. Different varieties like different temps but most like heat, one that many people find grows/blooms better in a bit cooler temps is polynura. I have also heard other hoya growers say that sunstressed hoyas dont bloom in as much quantity/frequency. I personally dilute my fertilizer a LOT and water with fertilizer once every 2-3 weeks in growing season and, at most, once a month in off season. If anyone wants more info/clarification I would love to have a convo!
Finally finding your own style is the best thing ever. I found my style around 2012ish and have never been more confident in my own fashion. My style is probably very dated now (as it’s early 2010’s fashion that everyone hates!) but I still love it. I’ve had most of my clothes for about 8 years now so definitely got my money’s worth. I’m also learning how to make my own clothes (I also found a vintage sewing machine at the weekend so best day ever). I only wish I had the confidence earlier. I was always drawn to the more boho style when I was younger but never thought I was pretty enough to wear it when I was a teenager so I used to just wear lots of black and jeans and a T-shirt most days. It was so stupid as I’ve found it’s really helped my confidence levels. I really recommend anyone to try clothing choices they’ve been intimidated by in the past. I’m turning 30 next year so have definitely been feeling that I’m too old to wear my style now (even though 30 is still young, I’m just very aware I won’t be in my twenties anymore). I’m still going to keep wearing things I love. X
Thank you so much for your information! Very much appreciated. It takes a strong person to share rather than hoard information. One who shares is confident while one who hoards is fearful of their position or knowledge. Love you lots!
Hoya's want to be root bound to bloom. Only repot Hoya when you have to, otherwise just leave them alone. My grandmother had a Hoya Compacta in an east facing window of the back kitchen that bloomed every year, and the scent almost knocked you over. The thing was wild, and large, and took up the whole entire window. Friend of the family has a large plant from that original. She's given me two planted cuttings. Killed both. I'm going for my 3rd this year, with my knewly gained planty wisdom under my belt.
OHHHH, is it, really? 🤓🤔🙃 *Reconsiders getting hoyas, as I'm allergic to it's scent* 😳! I love the way they look, but if it blooms, I'm out with bad cluster migraines😢 report it ever year, twice a year it is! Hahaha
Hi Kaylee. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge on TC. I always wondered about that. You are a good person. Hopefully others will look in their own yard/life first, before throwing stones. 🙏🏼
Definitely interested in a Rare Plant Shop t shirt or tank top ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜!!! Edit: My thoughts on TC is that it’s fine for houseplants and I love that it reduces poaching. Only downside is that it cannot do genetic diversity for actual endangered species conservation.
You are one of the few talking about supplier behaviour and holding Back their Stock. I adore you for Your big Balls and Your honesty. Very much appreciated. 😊 I love the EU TC but I also love the Hands On approach in America.
Watching this again 10 months later is so surreal. From the Obliqua and Var. Adansonii prices to the biggest variegated plant now being the Var. Spiritus Sancti, it feels like I've jumped into a different universe.

I love your video. I watch it every time you release it. I’m an indoor plant lover and I have collected more than 350 indoor plants including all the rare ones. I find you very honest and straight forward when you speak. I fully support your opinion on gay right or racism. Looking at all your videos give me a great knowledge of indoor plants. I think of you and summer (from US) as my plant guru. Thank you from Australia
Haha, your accent is so cute! Every time you said apparel I thought you were saying Aperol (as in Aperol Spritz), and I was like, dayumm yes, I'll have as many Aperol as you're dishing out!
This popped into my head... Propogation operation. Not sure that its wholly accurate but its catchy 🙂. I love your videos and I find them so intriguing and informative as someone who doesn't necessarily keep rare plants but enjoys plant keeping in general and having conversations about it. Keep up the good work!
My Hoyas are going mental too and the room I have them in is very warm too (26-30) so you could be right with that! Humidity level is around 65. Average light levels in a west window.
YASSS DESIGNER HANDBAGS!! It's the other thing I collect besides Houseplants, so I totally agree with what you said about them :). I can't wait to see the new bag you got!
I've found that my 2 Hoya that bloom (Krimson queen and Krimson princess) bloom when water stressed. I water mine once a month fully.... Where the water runs out. They're also still in their original plastic nursery pots. They are probably root bound. I've heard both water stress and rootbounded-ness helps with blooms. I could be wrong though. 😅
Love your videos! Whenever I have to drive 1-2hours, I always put you on Bluetooth so I can hear what you say even if I don’t see you. 😅 You’re one of the very few youtubers I actually trust with Philodendron care tips. Can you please do an in depth video on how to grow Philodendrons in Leca? Do’s and don’ts when growing Philodendrons in Leca. Thank you Kaylee ❤️
OMG! Your T-Shirt is amazing! I would also love to get The Rare Plant Shop T-Shirt! If you made The Rare Plant Shop Pride T-Shirt, I would get soooo excited and get it right away before it sells out! :)
Greetings from Florida. Hope everyone has a great day. Philodendron atabapoense grows into a beautiful plant. Its my favorite. There are many TC labs and I sense there will be competition to create p. spiritus-sancti at a better price.
My intution would say growing them vertically 🤔 the thought behind it? Well... The runners run on the forest floor and they keep searching for a tree, and as soon as it reaches a vertical element it starts producing leaves and growing up. .. so maybe vertically growing them will work🤷♂️.. and ofcourse there might be some behind the scenes growth hormones doing their thing.
LOVE this, love you, thx so much!!! Happy Pride 🏳️🌈 ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🤍🤎 Also - yes to t-shirts! The classic b&w would be great, as well as a Pride version if there’s time to get them out 😀
You could call these videos “shop talk” or “work with me”. I all ways feel like I should be doing plant chores or helping you when I watch these videos.
Completely understand how you feel about not really having nice things, all my teen and early 20s I had pretty much nothing and thrifty all my clothes, only now I'm a bit older am I able to buy a few nice new things 🙂 glad to hear you are now comfortably earning to be able to do this 💜
I just think that everyone has right to their own opinions and thoughts, but that doesn’t mean the we can’t have love and respect for one another regardless of our differences. No matter what, we are one on this small planet and let the small amount of time we have on it, make it a hell of a ride. Don’t waste the time on hate ✌🏽❤️ Thanks for another video 😍
Re: Getting lucky finding variegated plants in big box stores….I can attest to that, as well. Just found a variegated MD in a mass produced MD pot at a big box stores in the US (assuming it’s a Thai Constellation). The variegation is all along the stem and every leaf coming off one of the plants is variegated. Super exciting when I found it.

Opinion on TC: if it reduces poaching, I’m not angry about it
Great point!!
I'm with you, but wonder how much it will reduce poaching if the supply is being restricted and prices are staying high.
Yes! This! People don’t understand that TC lends itself to reducing habitat loss and destruction for capitalist purposes!

I think of you and summer (from US) as my plant guru. Thank you from Australia
Kaylee i feel like I’m listening to super confidential information every time you explain how the prices are going down. 👁👄👁
My Hoyas that have bloomed the most are in my south facing window(zone 5b). They have bloomed constantly since spring vs the Hoya in my greenhouse.
❤️😜👍You have direct sunlight on them?
Haha, your accent is so cute! Every time you said apparel I thought you were saying Aperol (as in Aperol Spritz), and I was like, dayumm yes, I'll have as many Aperol as you're dishing out!
its Chewsday innit? also happy pride kaylee!!!!!
Love your content. I could spend hours watching your videos!
I agree, the cloning isn't bad. It's helping prevent poaching of rarer plants. Some plants don't prop well or are slow to come back after cutting.
Love your shirt. Love the message. Love the video!
I love your videos Kaylee!!
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤 Also had good and bad experience with imports.
Can’t wait to see what happens when you go into full nursery! That’ll be amazing. I also totally bought that shirt.
Ooh, someone let me know the trade secret of getting runner nodes to quickly sprout a leaf!
Basically 100% humidity, heat and light
I’d wonder about applying rooting hormone. Often that can stimulate growth in other ways.
Prayers

Yes, please add the Rare Plant Shop tee to your merch! Been dying to buy one for a while :)
I just think that everyone has right to their own opinions and thoughts, but that doesn’t mean the we can’t have love and respect for one another regardless of our differences. No matter what, we are one on this small planet and let the small amount of time we have on it, make it a hell of a ride. Don’t waste the time on hate ✌🏽❤️
Thanks for another video 😍
I would love to see a live video of Kaylee. Reading the comments below, yes her voice is wonderful.
I love you for using your voice to promote all kinds of love. Love is never wrong!!!
I love you even more now! Thank you for your support and thank you for making a public statement! 💕💕
Omg the unsubscribe part 😱😍😁🙌🏼 yes queen!!!!! We love you!
I’m currently crocheting a jumper of your merch. Currently making ones from other plant tubers as well 🎉
