I can remember watching this as a schoolboy on TV - very special to see it again 43 years later - it is noticeable as to the lack of arrogance and good spirit between them all
@@markw5420 me and my brother say best show ever and we watched them in the last few weeks, i saw them the first time round, you have not seen the right ones, try superstars 1980, and superstars superteams [geoff capes]
I would have been eleven back then and moving from junior to senior school that year! Remember the programme and the theme tune well (which is in C major).
I agree rurimino. All for a colour telly too. Love the fact he all shared the same weight lifting belt and passed it around. A bygone era. Brian Jacks autobiography out now. I've just started it. All get yourselves a copy.
They bought it back a few years ago.then it went again, the golden days was the 70s,the mid 80s is when it started to go down.t they could still do it but make it computer simulation, like rowing, cycling swimming, running, etc.like games masters
I noticed that Brian Jacks wasn't wearing the Adidas gear supplied to the other competitors. I wonder if this was because he had a sponsorship deal with Puma? In those days Puma were very strict on their big signings not showing the logo or branding of Adidas on any official kit they wore. There is a picture of Pele with Bobby Moore in the 70s both playing for Team USA who were playing in Adidas kit. Pele who was one of Puma's biggest stars has the three stripes on his shirt and shorts taped over. Similarly Johan Cruyff another big Puma name famously wore only two stripes on his Dutch 'Adidas' kit in the 1974 World Cup.
Canadian Superstars were cancelled 10 days prior due to a camerman strike....there was 1 athlete who did not get to compete who may have won the whole thing.
Has this been edited down? The original timeslot on BBC1 was 1hr10mins. I know that programmes may have been a few minutes longer or shorter than the Radio Times/genome timeslot suggests... but almost 20 minutes shorter?
actually Fielding had a shocking start and had run a time .5s quicker previous so he underperformed on the day. Given Malcolm McDonald was injured, Fielding was favourite on the day not Hemery s he alluded to in the interview.
I would gave won that race be ayse around that time I was a 10.8 sprinter, so tjete would have been very little to stop me beung the Superstars champion except I would have sunk in the pool, Im useless at football, I can't use paddles , do weights, lift my iwn body weight on bars. What a theme tune whenever I hear it I still believe that I can do the things I did as a young man.
It's in the key of C major, Neil. I have a very good memory for tunes and possess perfect pitch!
magnificent
Who wrote the theme tune

These men were Gods of their time unlike the primadonas of today. And they seemed to love doing it without the snare of big money contracts.
rurimino yawn... this is awful tat . Nobody would watch this muck today
Mark W - you’re watching it aren’t you?

I like how the most important thing to them was the new friendships they made

Pickering & Vine the best sports presenters anyone could wish for!
I agree.Both great blokes.
We are the Champions!
Brian Jack's century of dips legend
40 years on... and I still know who Brian Jacks is. That's some pretty impressive celebrity.
So do I (eleven at the time of this footage). I moved from junior to senior school then!
If you were in a fight and Brian jack trained you then you’re lucky…very lucky
Used to love this. Why aren’t programmes like this made any more?
Apparently health and safety.

Brian Jacks would have still won the dips but the judge's arm was the same height for everyone and BJ hardly had to dip compared to others
Great show mate
Brian Jacks always had a very suspect technique on the dips and the squat thrusts. Never fully extends. Maybe I should let it go after 40 years....
Agree - suspect techniques. Like I could do better mind......
the really dodgy one in the squat thrusts was Jonah Barrington.
I seem to remember Jody Scheckter using vegetable oil for the squat thrusts or something, maybe I just dreamt it
@@jj9749 yeah I seem to remember something like that.

There must have been hatred between the two companies since the original creators of both companies were brothers that fell out.
Wow 😳
rugby league great.Keith fielding
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!
No, cricket is my game!
Daley Thompson should have been in this... but I guess he was still at the top and didn’t want to get injured.

It was probably cut down to fit in ad breaks, which obviously weren't in the original BBC1 airing.
And after losing…Jacks never competed again.
Was that Lyn Davies who went on to become the English language Rugby Union commentator for BBC Wales from 1989/97
No a different Lyn Davies
But he did commentate for ITV when they had athletics.
Why do I hear the MNF theme?
Because it's the same theme, Heavy Action.
Of course Hemery wins the 100m, he is a sprinter after all? 13.4 sec 110mh is world class now

His knees had gone by 1981, had retired from football by then. In mid 1970s would have won that no problem
