  • Who is not aware of the fate of Sita, the Queen of Ayodhya, who was sent into exile? Her pain, and her angst is so beautifully captured by Toru Dutt in her poem 'Sita'. Dr. Indira Nityanandam presents to us the next poem, 'Sita', where she brings in the double-layered misery - of Sita, and of the young poet remembering her dead siblings. Through the brilliant technique of storytelling, Dutt takes us on a journey of pain and loneliness, of rejection and banishment. ‪@thestorycafe1602‬ brings to you yet another poem, that will leave a deep imprint on your minds.

To listen you explaining something immediately awakened the state of student within and that student also recognise the disguised student in you also who is acting as a teacher ... Whenever you explain something Ma'am It feels like while explaining eventually you very smartly and beautifully removed yourself from a Poet and a Listener and build a direct connection between both of them. it feels like poet himself/herself is explaining his/her poetry. How beautifully you have always captured a core of a poet's mind and potrey it without disturbing the soul of it. Always bow down to you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

When I see sita or the title 'sita' here I don't see her from the Ramayan rather here I see dutt embodying sita through the narration of sita and becoming sita herself.
Now this might sound absurd in many ways but according to me, and as you mentioned she lost her siblings at a very young age where she herself didn't even know the meaning of grief or agony but life taught her that. And why she relates the most to sita here is because she feels the sense of loneliness and agony that sita went through when she was forced to leave her home behind and everyone she loved behind... In the similar manner toru dutt also had to leave India and shift to England on her parents course she wasn't just leaving her country but she was also leaving the place where she spent half of her childhood growing up with her siblings listening to these mythological stories and most importantly spending the most beautiful moments of her life with them. And to leave that behind is not something anyone can do because that place has been a place where your soul rests and a body without a soul is equivalent to a dead person.
And this is not the only instance where she relates the most to sita but the fact that sita in the midst of that agony found her solace in that forest also is something which is familiar to dutt. Because even dutt found her solace in nature, take any of her poems you would always see glorification of nature. Because in the midst of that state of loneliness, where the darkness called for her the only thing that was consistent throughout was nature. The trees , the birds, the flowers etc.
So when you ask me why I think that the sita in the title is none other than toru dutt then I will tell you because dutt understands the agony of sita, she understands that state of loneliness that sita was surrounded with in the forest and it is because of that she knows to her core what agony is! And yet again it is the reason why I believe that she is the sita through the narration of the sita in the Ramayana. She is the sita.

    The paraphrase is very good.
But it feels that the story of Toru and Sita are juxtaposed.both seem incomplete inconclusive ,the conclusion left to the reader’s imagination.
    My opinion of course.
