    **IMPORTANT**:
    1. If you lived ‘ON-CAMPUS’ or ‘NGO HOUSING’ in 2023, you CANNOT claim the Renter’s Deduction on SCHEDULE C.
    In this case, you simply need to skip the Schedule C and don’t send it with your documents but fill out and send other forms as applicable!
    2. If you haven’t already sent your documents, also fill our FORM IN-W. This is not mentioned in the video because I figured that out later.
    Please feel free to reach out at patil107@purdue.edu if you need to discuss anything!

    Apart from the forms you mentioned do we need to attach W2, 1040NR from federal filings and 1042s forms as well to mail documents

      Hi Pranjal. You don’t need to attach Federal returns with your Indiana State tax. Attach the Indiana forms and all the W-2s.
      You can refer this video: ruclips.net/video/AtaYcmMyUpo/видео.htmlsi=AH8qwzWeIWB2tGZU

    From where did you get that 2444 figure for col. B. I mean from which form and also tell the location in the form to pinpoint for this figure. 7:42

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  3 месяца назад

      Hi. I had two separate W-2s in 2023. One for California and another one for Indiana. I earned $2,444 from Indiana (you can find it from Box 1 of your W-2) which is the amount I entered in Column B.
      IMPORTANT: In Column B, only enter the income that you earned in Indiana!

      Thank you for your kind words!! I’m really happy to help you in your tax filing!
      So as per a video uploaded by Purdue, if you lived ‘On-Campus’ or lived in ‘NGO Housing’, you CAN’T claim the Renter’s Deduction!
      So in your case, as you lived On-Campus in 2023, you don’t need to fill Schedule C as it won’t be applicable to you. You can simply skip this Form and fill other Forms and Schedules.
      I hope this helps. Please feel free to reach out at patil107@purdue.edu if you need to discuss this further.

    In IT-40PNR, I got Minus(-ve) value in Line 5. Should I keep "- value" or "0".

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  2 месяца назад

      Hi. I assume that the value on your Line 7 is zero. If yes, you have 2 options:
      1. Enter ‘- value’ in Line 5 and then 0 in line 7.
      2. Enter 0 in Line 5 as well as Line 7
      Both of the options have the same meaning: Your Indiana taxable income is zero. I think it shouldn’t make a huge difference. If you ask me, I would prefer the first option.
      I hope this helps!

      If you didn’t have any income in 2023, you don’t need to file the Indiana State Taxes!
      You still need to File the Form 8843 with the IRS: ruclips.net/video/gAQ4lPV3yYs/видео.htmlsi=Rp3KpE2IoCUw58BE
      I hope this helps!

      Hi Rohit. Thank you for your kind words! I just found that out after reading the instructions that it’s recommended to attach Form IN-W if you are filing by paper.
      Purdue didn’t mention about this form in their list of forms until now.
      If you haven’t sent out the documents already, please consider attaching this form as well!
      Thank you for letting everyone know about this. Appreciate your help and attention to detail!!

    Is the rent paid valid till dec 2023 or if my lease was till feb 2024 should I count those months as well

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes. You should only count the months you stayed in Indiana in 2023 (Jan-Dec). Any rent paid in 2024 will be included in next year’s tax filing.

    Hi! Thanks for the informative video. I had a question: I currently hold stocks via robinhood but have not been given an 1099 DIV form (Dividends are below $10) or the capital gains document (I have stayed less than 183 days). Do I still need to show that I own stocks either on my state or federal tax forms? (I haven't sold any stock yet either, just purchased)

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  2 месяца назад

      Hi Soham!
      Did you receive any dividends in 2023?
      You DON’T need to report any stock purchases on Federal or State taxes. You only need to report if you received any DIVIDEND income or SOLD stocks during any financial year in Form 1040-NR Schedule NEC as a Non-Resident Alien.

    • @sohamagarwal00
      @sohamagarwal00 2 месяца назад

      @@PiyushPatil1512 I received maybe less than a dollar, thus I didnt get a 1099 DIV. It mentions we only get it if we earn more than $10 through dividends. Do I still need to show that amount on the 1040-NR?

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  2 месяца назад

      In an ideal scenario, you should report everything. But I think less than a dollar isn’t worth putting in as you would also need to fill Schedule NEC and tax is negligible.

    What if the subtraction of line 4 from line 3 in IT 40PNR is a negative term? Should we write the absolute value or do something else?

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  2 месяца назад +1

      Hi Roshan! In this case, you have two options:
      1. Put Line 5 as negative value, proceed with the calculations and then put Line 7 as 0
      2. Put both Line 5 and Line 7 as 0
      In any case, the meaning remains the same: “Your taxable income is 0”
      So it shouldn’t make a difference on which option you choose!

    I have Standard Deduction - US-India Income Tax Treaty on my federal tax return. Where should I include that on my Schedule A in section 2?

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  2 месяца назад

      Hi Gaurav. To clarify: ‘STANDARD DEDUCTION’ due to US-India tax treaty is only applicable to “FEDERAL TAX” and not for STATE TAX.
      Each State has their own deduction rules. For example: Indiana has Renter’s Deduction (Schedule C), Exemptions (Schedule D), etc.
      So you DON’T have to enter standard deduction anywhere in Indiana Tax Filing.

    • @gauravv912
      @gauravv912 2 месяца назад

      @@PiyushPatil1512 Section 2 of schedule A says to enter in column A the deductions claimed on 2023 federal income tax return. Would that deduction not go in there?

    • @PiyushPatil1512
      @PiyushPatil1512  2 месяца назад

      We don’t have to add the standard deduction in Indiana forms. Section 2 is only if you had Schedule 1 with your Federal Tax.
