Gary, when's the best time to drink a protein shake to make muscle gains? I get this question all the time inside my 1-on-1 coaching program so I thought I'd break it down in today's new video.
I am a 61 year old3 firefighter and I use 3 different approach. I weigh 205 so per the research I have read I make sure I get 205 to 225 grams of protein per day, leg days being the high days. I wake up and immediately take my pre-workout. Ten minutes later I have a protein shake. Once I finish working out I have a two scoop protein shake An hour later I have a six ounce sirloin burger with 1 cup of protein spaghetti. This routine is six days a week because that is how often I work out. I have learned over my forty-five years of lifting experience that eating around 100 to 125 grams of protein close to working out works best for me
Your advice is always good. But I've noticed that none of the people who contribute to the actual videos seem to look over 65yrs old. I am and I've been a bodybuilder since I was 13yrs old. Digestion makes some drastic changes once we reach a certain age. Things slow down and we have difficulty eating the amount of food that we once did to maintain muscle density. Would you please present a video on this topic? Trying to force 250 grams of protein into your system at age 65 is extremely difficult.
Hi Gary, I’m 62 and I’m an ex triathlete and always did endurance sport for almost 42 years. I did weights training on and off to support endurance sport/training and I’m 6’4- 186 pounds. I began seriously weight training 3 months ago to add some muscle. (I’m a really hard gainer). I upgraded my amount of proteins to 150-160 g/day. I also upgraded my carbo/ amount of food in general. The thing is that, I now have stomach and bowel issues. I wonder if, lower my amount of food an protein at around 130 g. and taking creatine supplement would be a good thing ??? I love really appreciate your work and your videos. Keep up the good work! 👌 God bless 🙏 Jean
Hi, just want to say, I hit 40 a few days ago, but I have been hitting the gym 3x a week for the last 3 or 4 years, with a few months break once a year. I don't push hard at the gym, I feel the burn after the workout & I could do a little more but I don't, because I'm type 1 diabetic & that causes issue's with nerve damage & frozen shoulder. So I have to balance things so I'm not in agony for days after. But I recently started doing progressive overload. However, I have a big appetite & it's really bad when I sit & relax in the evenings. So I have a light snack in the mornings, more so pre gym workout so my sugars don't drop whilst I'm working out. But I keep doing it every day & then I have a larger meal late evening so I'm full for the rest of the day & don't snack. So, what's your advice for a say, 1 meal + 1 snack guy like myself? Should I keep doing the post workout protein shake & then a top up in the evenings after I've eaten to stem any peckish desires, or could I improve things doing another way? I should mention, since switching to a progressive overload, I'm seeing better results. Just to put things into perspective. I was 17.8st, now I'm 16.4st. I'm 178cm tall with a body fat % of 30 & muscle mass of 38%. So my calorie intake is about 25-35% less than I need to sustain my weight. Thanks in advance & I have just followed & liked :) P.S.. I'm English, in case my language sounds odd lol
I really appreciate all of your videos, especially this one! I’m 64 and do full body weight lifting every other day switching between dumbbells and also using an old Universal stack weight machine and do 30 minutes of HITT cardio on an elliptical on the days in between. I only usually eat 2 meals a day and snack in between so figure I should start drinking a protein shake post workout and before bedtime to make better muscle gains. (Three questions) (1) What do you think about Plant Based Protein Powders? I purchased a brand from Costco called Orgain Organic Protein. (2) On my Cardio days should I also drink a protein shake post workout and at bedtime? (3) Do you think what I am doing is a good workout routine? I really like cardio! It really helps to keep down stress levels and also wanting to lose more body fat.
@@jeanc4431 I also had issues with Whey protein and really like the Orgain protein. It’s nice that they’re coming out with a strawberry cream flavor....
First thing thanks for all the videos I really appreciate it. :) Sò I do intermittent fasting I eat twice a day from 12 noon to 6pm trying to reach 180 lbs right now im at 184 ive lost 32 pounds:) I'm doing light workout but focusing on muscle gain. I only drink water since I don't want to break my intermittent fasting my question is can I drink whey protein shake outside my limits? I'm 52 yrs old
Very well said sir about this topic and keep it up and keep training hard and be strong always sir and stay safe and stay healthy and be positive and happy always
Thanks Gary! Great advice. I use Orgain plant based Protein because I can't do milk. Still 30gm x4/day? Or is it not as effective as whey? I thought amino acids were amino acids.
I was told by a doctor that protein is only, good to take the day before a workout. He explained that protein foods energizes the body all day. Protein supplements work slowly getting to the muscles. Therefore, not eating before a workout works best. He advised that if, you must eat hv oatmeal and sleep is most important. What you say, about the doc's advice? Shalom.
Wonderful help 8 thank you so much I really appreciate it really appreciate it as escalating up in age I feel that these are very helpful tools again thanks.
You never menton body size vvs protein consumption... I am 6 foot 250lbs ,so i should consume the same protein as a guy my age that is 180lbs.???.. to me this does not seem logical
If the body repairs itself during sleep then surely as long as you meet your daily needs of protein all will be fine. You will have a constant supply of amino acids in your bloodstream.
Another great video. I eat lots of meat, lots of chicken. Not because I am a lifter or muscle guy, but because I like to eat lots of meat. Carnivore.... Is there too much protein?
Ummm it's been agreed that the general "rule" is...1g of protein for 1 pound of body weight. The older we are the more per gram..even 1.5g per pound of body weight. 200 pound man 200g of protein minimum per day. More the better. After workout. Yes. Before sleep. yes.
Best time to consume protein for exercise is 24-48 hours prior to the workout, as protein ALWAYS goes to your liver, FIRST. And protein takes 24-48 hours to digest - in your liver.
Hey Gary, thanks for sharing vital information to us training guys in the 50's and 60's... but best of all that I took from this video of yours is what you have in the background, and that is Jesus in your life! 🙂 He's the best protein source anyone can have!
Just eating protein will not increase your testosterone levels. Study prove it. And if men are overeating calories in a day that will almost certainly have negative affect. Eat the 1 gram per pound of idea body weight, spread it out is fine, but also important to remind everyone to stay at or close maintenance calorie intake. For many guys there will be major benefits avoiding all nuts, seeds, almond milk, high oxalate veggies, Lectins and gluten (regardless of intolerance or not). For many guys, irregardless of protein intake, if they would get more sleep and better sleep it would raise their test levels. Reducing stress, different job, more relaxed life, more human contact,..stop smoking and alcohol, get some exercise will have the biggest increase on test levels.
@@carlor.s.4742 awesome, but for most people seeds done not digest well. Many times the fiber is actually pulling nutrients out of the body and not adding a actual quantifiable value to the body. Some people are very healthy but not at optimal health.
@@DrAJ_LatinAmerica Agree, we are not all the same. I follow Dr. Ekberg & Dr Berg for info & I am very careful about what I eat. As for whey powder, I have started using keto whey which has more fat in it, although I use only half a scoop as the scoop is humongous.
Where is your evidence for this stuff you're putting out? At present all that's coming out it anecdotal and testimony. No scientific evidence just means this is "your" way but not necessarily the "best" way.

How About Blueberries does that do anything for you
Yep,blueberries,a powerful antioxidant, also helps in kidney function …
What is your suggestion for those on a vegan diet?
Casein is great if you enjoy constipation...
IM 76 years young I work out in the AM with a pre-work 30gm of protein should I have another 30gm at post-work workout?.
A recovery type protein shake. Never drink one an hour before bed time.
Keto is that a good program
I thought casein was spelled with a 'C' instead of a 'K'?
Correct. It is definitely spelled with a 'C'

If your looking for a good protein powder to gain weight and get protein. Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass.1250 calories. 50 grams of protein. It works!
How much sodium is in the product? My Doc. put me on a diet of 2000mg a day.

There's also soy protein powder. :o
2 meals is tough 😔
A protein shake within an hour after your work out and a protein shake prior to bed. There, I saved you 8 minutes of monotony.
Thanks!!
