  • Lakeside Mall is a Detroit-area mall, specifically located in Sterling Heights. Lakeside Mall has fallen out of favor as of late, and is expected to be demolished anyday now in favor of a fake downtown streetscape.

Those fountains used to be much higher and would go up or down with the elevator. When the elevator would go up the fountains would raise along with it, reaching a good height, when the elevator went down, the fountains slowly went down with the elevator until they disappeared completely, quite a treat for the late 70's/80s it was very cool back in the day. So many memories at this mall :(

I love the spaceship look of the ceiling in this mall and a black fountain is a bold statement. Such a nice 70s mall. The fountain also looks like she could have been in Logan's Run. Quite a SciFi looking mall.

I honestly don’t know why they are going to waste so much money, tearing down and re-developing this mall. Like they could use the building for offices and recreation. “Lifestyle centers” are not always successful.

The people “redeveloping” are making big money. There’s typically not as much money in renovation or repurposing of properties people have become bored with for years. Money to be made is always the reason, but it’s also similar to a bin full of toys we could play with, but we want the new toys…

When I used to work for Hudson's Eastland Mall from 1975,until 1980.
And I remember when Lakeside Mall and Fairlane Town Center Mall both opened up. I still remember going shopping at Lakeside Mall.
The Eastland Mall where I worked at Hudson's Eastland was located in Harper Woods.I remember the mergers between Hudson's and Marshall Field's and now Macy's.
After when Eastland Mall was demolished. The old Eastland Mall is going to be an Class A Warehouse and Distribution Center. And I remember after when Lakeside Mall demolished and J.C.PENNEY and Macy's will be remodeled and free standing stores.
I'm going to miss Lakeside Mall when it gets demolished. The old Eastland Mall opened up in 1957,demolished in 2022.
And when you get a chance to,would you do a video about Fairlane Town Center Mall in Dearborn. That's another Mall that opened up the same time Lakeside Mall opened up in the late 1970's.

Just coming here to say, this mall isn't closed. It will be redeveloped with mixed use public spaces, residential, commercial office space, restaurants, and JCP and Macy's will remain, along with a number of other current tenants. At last check, there are still 60 retailers operating at Lakeside. The mixed use public spaces are supposed to include a park, walking trails, and other pedestrian friendly attractions like a dog park. This mall sits on 110 acres. It is definitely not as busy as it once was, but as of now it is not closed nor slated to be closing, just downsized from its current footprint.
Another point, this mall is a full 20 miles away from Detroit proper, so the location has nothing to do with it. Also, maybe visit Downtown Detroit, it might change your mind. Some of the neighborhoods still need some help and I hope they receive it soon (Detroit is huge, 148 sq miles), but the days of a blanket statement like Detroit=BAD are receding. There is a TON of new development and/or restoration occurring in Detroit as we speak. The once infamous poster-child of Detroit ruin-porn, Michigan Central Station, has been undergoing a full restoration by Ford Motor Company. It will serve as a hub for the future of mobility. One or two floors of retail space will open to the public next year.
I'm not trying to pick a fight, I just want to add context to what I perceive as a misleading video title.

Job well done. As a mom of a RUclipsr who knows the work involved in editing a video and the hours put in it's all worth it to have a quality video. I loved the mall. It was an upscale mall in its heyday. Unfortunately we lived across town so we didn't get there often. It's sad what's happening to retail in America. Truth is if you ask, most people don't want to see their malls close. I hate shopping on line. I'd rather try it on in the store to see how it fits rather than sending it back for another size. The wait time for returns also sucks.

This was my mall growing up. There was a two story water slide here at one time (The Hydrotube), then they made that space into a two story arcade (Tilt). Christmas shopped here for at least a decade. Went to the Rocky Horror Picture Show at midnight at Lakeside Cinema at least a million times. In the 80's/90s you'd have to park on the lawn during Christmas sometimes. Many of my friends worked at stores in the mall, I worked at a restaurant in the parking lot. The Dad of a kid I grew up with helped build the place. End of an era.

Yeah, 'de-malling' has been the city's heart's desire for a while, but it's been slow going in the actual bureaucracy. Which may not be a bad thing with such a big, expensive undertaking. Meanwhile, with Lakeside being well kept-up despite its genteel decline, it's not a source of urban blight like some other dying malls are. It helps that the area is still highly dense with retail and leisure businesses.

  • @hazeldavis3176

What I love about older architecture is that it isn't minimalist. It's not the cheapest thing, the easiest thing, the flat-pack of design. There are angles that took craftsmen to build. Creative multi-tiered layouts. It feels like someone gave a damn about the space. Nowadays it just all feels cheap and 'board approved'.

Plans for redevelopment are NOT finalized, in fact the plan was almost derailed by the Sterling Heights city council early this month but at the last minute the mayor made a deal for a representative to change her vote from no to yes to save the plan for now. So far the city is in the process of setting up a special tax district so property taxes collected within it will go towards the infrastructure for the project, such as streets, sewers, and utilities. They will also borrow $45 million in a bond. No demolition or building permits have been filed. The renderings shown by the city show the Sears replaced with a hotel, offices, and apartments, but the owner of the Sears building stated that it will remain and is marketing it for lease.

Years ago I owned property in the downtown area of a small town. The powers that be decided to revitalize the area. They did this whole marketing thing with a artist rendering of how it would look. Funny thing my buildings were gone and replaced by a parking building. I spent years battling them as they tried every shady trick to get my properties. I was willing to sell for fair market value but they were only offering pennies on the dollar. The project fizzled out.

Too much retail in that area (Hall Rd), even the fancier outdoor mall Partridge Creek is most likely on its way out. The redevelopment might succeed but I'd rather see that land turn into a park, same with Partridge Creek. We have enough retail in Metro Detroit, don't need more.

I wouldn't consider 'near Detroit' a relevant thing for Lakeside, by the way. Never was. Lakeside was done in by the rise of online shopping and its own success - a ton of retail popped up around the mall and up and down Hall Road such that it wasn't 'the' place to shop to get it all in one place any more. Partridge Creek - well I don't know. I've been there and I wasn't particularly impressed, but I don't doubt it hoovered up some business, especially from people living farther out that way.
