Love that you make it a point to just make one large moss pole for your plant. Don’t think about the small stage it may be at now, think about where you WANT it to be and give it what it needs to get there successfully and easily. You don’t want to have to annoy your plant every time it grows taller, all in all you AND your plant will appreciate it very much ❤ another great video!

Hi Jan, Bev from Adelaide here. Thanks for including my plants at 6:37 😊 Yes, you’re right. I did repot the El Salvador when I extended the moss pole. The growth has slowed a bit but I assume it may be concentrating on root growth in the bigger pot. Great to see everyone’s plants. Love this idea.

Very inspiring. You have impressed and taught many people! I really loved the person in Lyon, France, who transformed the staircase into a living wall. I loved that it was getting a bit wild, jungly, you could hardly see the poles..
I coulld tell you were impressed with the person, whose collectioon and style was the closest to yours. He even had a comparable oxalis! Your reaction was so funny!
But rest assured you will always be the best teacher and plant parent. Your sincere wish for people to succeed, and plants to be well cared for comes through in every comment you make.
All plant people have their own charm, even the ones who aren't getting everything perfect. It's incredible how global and huge the plant-obsession has become.

I found you on RUclips because I'm trying to learn how to arrange my lovely collection of mostly tropical plants into nice combinations. I'm so glad I did, because now I'm learning how to in a practical, hands on way. I'm fairly new to indoor plants since about December '23 when I had a sudden vision for a tropical indoor garden. I have always grown plants and flowers, vegetables outside. I'm so glad for the inspiration. Thanks. Your communication skills and the pleasant person you are really come through in your videos. I'm now up to about 100 with around 30 phaleonopsis orchids. Love this hobby and love seeing a truly talented person such as yourself so excited about it too.

"The plant whisperer", yes great name for you Jan. I'm here in Minnesota, the weather here can be -20f in the winter and 108f in the summer, and backwards to the weather you have. So, I'm collecting ideas and care instructions from you, then I'm going to find the 'right plant' and try doing what you do. One of these days I'll be brave enough to find a plant and start, but, being a senior on a fix income I don't want to kill an expensive plant practicing on it. I have tried growing a pothos on a pole. The leave are bigger and it seems happy so far.
Pothos and monstera are great & inexpensive to start of with :) happy growing :)
The 3D castle pole would be great as just a topper for regular poles. As in, they just fit on the very top and act as a funnel to pour water into the pole, or to hold a bottle for pouring. That way the castle if functional and removable. Could be multiple sized diameters too.

Or it could go along the back of the pole, in a semicircle, covering the solid sheet backing of the pole. This way the roots wouldn't tangle into the building making propagation difficult, but the intricate building would make the back side of the pole interesting.
Thanks for including my pothos video. I agree completely. I've turned it around towards the window and the leaves have corrected. My future moss poles are much larger and sustain the moisture much better. Love your videos. Looking forward to continuing my learning and growing more large leaves ❤

Hi Jan, I love your channel and have learned so much from your videos. In response to Octavio from L.A., I switched from GT Foliage Focus because it is difficult to get and is really expensive in the US. I'm about a year into my plant journey. I started out using GT Foliage focus but switched to Superthirve Foliage Pro about 6 months ago and my plants are still thriving. There has been no decline in growth at all. Superthirve Foliage Pro is more cost-effective, and it gives me the same results as GT Foliage Focus.

Fantastic video Jan, and all of those who contributed - thank you! The long form videos are always very engaging, and it helps to have a virtual 'chat' about whats going on with your/our plants when you don't necessarily have a plant buddy to ask questions or get advice from. I live in Wichita, KS I loved seeing what others are doing. I have always loved gardening, but with the extreme heat and drought, I have had to garden on porch, patio and now indoors. What made me come indoors was a result of having to bring in some plants during the winter. I have added grow lights due to a very dark house. After watching your video I have decided to try a moss pole. I have a velvet heart philodenron and a friend recently gave me starts from her Pothos. Right now I am leaning towards getting starts off my Philodenron and using that for my moss pole plant. Thank you for the inspiration and sharing.

Mississippi - Alabama - Louisiana - Florida are all on the Gulf of Mexico (Gulf Coast) and in the USA is part of the Deep South. The State of Mississippi borders the Mississippi River. The state of Mississippi is made up of many different landscapes including forests, wetlands, barrier islands, prairies, and coastal dunes.
The Mississippi River is the primary river, and second-longest river, of the largest drainage basin in the United States. From its traditional source of Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota, it flows generally south for 2,340 miles (3,766 km) to the Mississippi River Delta in the Gulf of Mexico. With its many tributaries, the Mississippi's watershed drains all or parts of 32 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces between the Rocky and Appalachian Mountains. The river either borders or passes through the states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
The climate in the Deep South is humid and hot with abundant rainfall most of the year. The further south in these states you are the more tropical the climate becomes. These states are USDA Zones 8 - 11 and get little snow. When the Deep South has freezing temperatures the roads can become sheets of black ice. These states experience hurricane season.

This was so fun to see everyone's plant collections. I do hope you continue with this as part of a series. I hope to submit a video myself after my plants recover from this Winter's struggle to keep warm. ( Furnace died during unusual freezing weather 🙀) As well, this first peak at submissions gives me a better idea of video style. Short and concise seamed to work best, which i tend to blather on... Since your last video about anthuriums, as you suggested last week occasionally I got small clarinervium. And seeds of anthurium gracile were for free, all of them are doing very well by the by!

So, plant wise, everything is bigger and better in Australia!!!! Just wow!!!! Just curious Jan, have you ever considered using large mirrors in the courtyard to redirect the light back into the the house? Just wondering if that might do anything for you.
Keep in mind Australia is a very large place with climates ranging from snowy mountains to deserts ;) when growing insite we’re all facing similar issues, australia or not ;) the mirrors would just be a hazard with the strong sun causing potential fires but light exposure should improve as the sun gets lower in autumn :)
@@sydneyplantguy, I get that. I live in Washington state and everyone thinks I live with constant rain and clouds. Lol, I live in the desert region of Washington, so not great for growing tropical plants. It does make life with plants interesting though;) I'm looking forward to part two!!

I was looking forward to sending in my video to you, I had colored lighting picked out on my aquarium light, the right time of day to film, and all my favorite plants in their prime positions 😅 but vehicle failures and my general bad luck threw a monkey wrench in my plans a usual

It's a long weekend here in the US. I am going to switch to a chunky aroid mix with my plants (mostly syngoniums) this weekend. Wish me luck! I'm excited to get in on this the next time you do it.

Such a great idea for a video. I loved seeing everybody's plants. So cool. I'm just surprised no one mentioned mushrooms growing in their moss poles. I have these yellow mushrooms growing vertically in my moss pole and I'm just wondering if I'm the only one. Can't wait for part 2!
Mm I’ve never encountered that. There must have been some spores in the moss you bought. Might also indicate that there is insufficient airflow. In general though, fungi are natural & a big contributor to soil health … just not sure about them in your moss pole 😐

Another comment/warning about plugged in lights near bathtubs. I have the same desire about experiencing my jungle near the tub. But make sure any grow lights are secured and/ or far away from chance falling into filled tub. Very dangerous.
42:30 I tried the cups before and had to go back to the bottles with holes in the caps because the open air above the cup allows the water to flow way too quickly through the holes; I wasn't able to rehydrate overly-dry sphagnum moss with this method and found it made more of a mess. With the bottles, because the air has to back-flow through the holes the water flows out of, it slows the rate considerably to a trickle that's much better for rehydrating moss.
Great point!! The cups might work well if you just want to walk around and water a little bit every day or so, so that the pole never even dries out :) Suppose I’ll stick to the bottles then :P

Mississippi may not scream tropical, but it is in the southern U.S., so it's mostly warm and definitely humid!

Do you ever get flowers on your plants? Does flowering actually hint that plants are stressed? My biggest philodendron is 10 feet tall with 3ft size leaves and roots coming through the 8 ft. tall moss pole. I had to move it away from the East facing window when it covered the whole window. I gave it 3 grow lights and now philo has produced 5 flowers.
Other question is what is difference between LED grow bulb and traditional daylight led bulb. Can I convert my whole house into grow lighting?
With aroids flowering is usually just a sign of maturity … so you’re doing well :) normal LEDs can help plants photosynthesising but grow light are optimised for the spectrum plants can use, which is different so the spectrum humans see :) i have a more in depth video on light linked in the description :)

Hi Jan, I am watching this video in parts, just saw the huge plant cabinet at 34:30.. If you're looking for inspiration for something more like what you describe, have you seen the Ill Exotics shop in America? I believe they have closed down, but Summer Rayne Oakes went there more than once, they made something with sliding doors normally used in living rooms.. You can see it in her tour videos :)

question for ya.
i have a stiletepecana growing vigorously, and it puts out the odd fensetration, but leaves cap put around 5-8 inches and doesnt get a whole lot of silcer. do i not have an el salvador and if not, do the regular ones size up?
im thinking it just needs more light.
