My dad went to elementary school with Kenny Rogers. My dad was a year older, but he flunked kindergarten and had to repeat it. Kind of. He didn’t actually flunk kindergarten, but the school determined that he was too immature to be in kindergarten so they had him wait a year before starting. That put my dad in the same grade level as Kenny Rogers. My dad doesn’t have any strong memories of Kenny - they weren’t friends - but he remembers being in the same class with Kenny a couple of years.
My grandmother used to play bridge or mahjong with Tommy Tune’s mother, who lived in the same neighborhood, and my dad’s youngest sister took dance lessons at Swayze’s School of Dance (run by Patrick Swayze’s mother) in the early 1960s. It’s just funny how my dad grew up with several people who became extremely famous. No one I knew as a child ever became famous…although one person I went to high school with did go on to become an astronaut who traveled to and spent time on the ISS a few years ago.

@@bertroost1675 I know, it’s not fair to knock Kenny. He was a mega talent. I think most people are drawn to authentic performers, or those who sell an image well, like Jerry Lee Lewis’ Killer and Jennings’ Outlaw. Kenny was, in all fairness, a generic city boy, so he took on the trappings of a 19th century saloon musician. Cher did the Gypsy thing. Nothing wrong with it, it just isn’t grounded in reality. It’s show business.

@@bertroost1675 His songs were two dimensional and cheesy, exemplifying the worst of country music, whereas this song actually had an intelligent hook, some humor, and didn't take itself so seriously.

The original recording had Good Time Glen Campbell on guitar. Who would have thought that one of the most psychedelic songs of the 60's would have been from two of the most famous country music legends.

I hadn't heard this song in decades until watching a scene in the movie "Faster" staring Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) when a corrupt drug addict detective played by Billy Bob Thornton arrives at his station a mess and all his colleagues stare him over, while the verse played "I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in" really fit the moment, it was a good movie.

I’d almost agree, but have you ever seen variety shows of the era…. The Buck Owens show for example? Buck would frequently mention how attractive his female singers were. Regardless of how stupid it was, those kind of remarks were generally meant as compliments. If the women cast members or guests were offended by it, there’s little to no push-back that’s evident. Until you get to the insufferable “Women’s Lib” business but those women couldn’t stand men in general.

I'm only here for memorabilia, ole songs like this takes me back to a place I can never return, a place where I was young........
The only song I really liked by Kenny was with Dolly, Islands in the Stream. I wonder if Kenny ever did find out what his condition was in, only Jesus Christ knows........
