Rules were enforced by a referee in Greece, unlike other traditional martial arts which were performed for the king, or arranged matches against convicted criminals. The way the Greeks practiced and performed (thru competition) their martial arts is unique to their culture. They deserve credit for their accomplishments

As for Thebes, the scholiast of Pindar was, himself, Theban, and he is a source that mentions Theseus as the inventor of boxing.

In my opinion, the oldest teacher of any fighting was Eve. In my opinion, Eve gets the credit for the creator of pankration.
