Interesting...Heracles used a rear naked choke which in BJJ is called mata Leon...the lion killer. Maybe it was named thus in BJJ in honor of the Greek account.
Sumerian God King of Uruk Gilgamesh who was 2/3rds divine invented that move. There are statues of him chocking out lions all throughout Mesopotamia. He also fought a ferious bull man with horns. Gilgamesh and Enkidu became bros during the fight
Study these classics thoroughly . I learn new things every time I read or watch something. For instance this is entirely new. This is a new thread , woven in among many familiar figures and stories. Not many people even know what pankration is.
Get into linguistics! It's the key to storytelling. Tolkien obviously did it, but someone else that did it was J.K. Rowling. Latin told her story essentially and gave her characters names along with personalities. Severus for example, means austere or foreboding. Sirius is the latin constellation of the dog. 🤷🏽♂️ She just put them in the same place and it made for a good story. 👍🏽
What if... the original who made Pankration is actually their teacher? Chiron. Chiron use both but Heracles and Theseus use it in their respectively different way?
bruh, Heracles killed the Nemean Lion in hand to hand combat.... 'nuff said....... Whoa, this representation sounds infinitely more plausible than what college taught me....
If I had to guess, outside of the religious and mythical origins of pankration it was created as a martial art in the Pythagorean School Pythagoras established.
How to get started in Pankration. Where can you train? There is some association? You plan to do video tutorials? Thanks and good luck with the channel!
Would it be possible to see a video going in more in depth about the different regions emphasis on different aspects of pankration like you kind of did here. Like you mention here how in Rhodes they focus on boxing And I remember that once you mentioned that the Spartans favoured leg kicks. Also does a bibliography exists of where you guys get your sources and references? Pankration forever!
That´s Heracles with his brother, short after their birth, having just killed 2 snakes that were sent to kill him, and saving his brother´s life. The grown-ups are their parents (alarmed by the cries of his brother), who woke up and came in to see what´s up...
kalaripayattu is actually older style of traditional martial arts. it is an extinct ancient indian martial art before greek and roman created pankration and modern-day martial arts
the difference is that the Greeks are the first culture to compete on terms that were more fair because of rule sets and the dissolution of class separation when competing in panhellenic games. Rules were enforced by a referee in Greece, unlike other traditional martial arts which were performed for the king, or arranged matches against convicted criminals. The way the Greeks practiced and performed (thru competition) their martial arts is unique to their culture. They deserve credit for their accomplishments
Theseus was the son of god Poseidon, AND of athenian king Aigeas, thus entitled for secular power AND demigod-usual heroic accomplishments. Of course, Theseus was a master of PR, often using already existing mythology to make his own mythological achievements seem even greater. So, when the time came, and he became the king of Athens, he banned monarchy, liberated his subjects (1st time in human history), and founded democracy, all thanks to his vast credibility, or else, his subjects would have thought that he is mad, since free persons have not existed before (except of kings), and the need for freedom was yet unknown. Athought a mostly mythical person, some of his deeds from 1500BCE really existed, and were the fundament for the later even more developed democracy.
Theseus invented pankration, or I was never known as Demophon. Pankration comes from yin bagwa kung fu, akido ju jit su, and hapkido. If you believe this indicates a Chinese influence in origin, you are mistaken. It indicates a Japanese origin from Jourrie Ives, otherwise known as God, Hir o, or Gilligan Ghandolf. Believe it or not, Theseus.
greek boxing ....was invented from Spartans....and wrestling and pankration from Theseus or Palaestra the goddess of wrestling. according to the greek mythology... but Hercules also is a huge influence..
Hercules and Theseus may have been the first practitioners of pankration, but are not necessarily the creators. Have you considered Samson and David from the Old Testament in the Bible? I do believe even Samson or David may also be the first practitioners of pankration, but not necessarily the creators. To my knowledge, the oldest recorded fight was Cane and Abel. In my opinion, the oldest teacher of any fighting was Eve. In my opinion, Eve gets the credit for the creator of pankration.
The oldest teachers of martial arts are animals. Shaolin 5 animals Kung Fu. Humans learn fighting from animals. Tiger, praying mantis, crane, snake, bears, monkeys, etc . . . Chinese martial arts are named after animals, because they learned it from animals.
How about neither? The oldest depiction of wrestling in Iraq (2,600 BCE) and of boxing, Thebes (circa 1,300 BCE). Both hundreds of years before the myths of Hercules and Theseus.
In regards to Iraqi wrestling, I'm afraid you missed the part of the title of the very video you commented on, that asks: "Who Invented Martial Arts -- in Ancient Greece -- ". As for Thebes, the scholiast of Pindar was, himself, Theban, and he is a source that mentions Theseus as the inventor of boxing.
@@AMOPankration People learn martial arts from watching animals, like Kung Fu. Tiger, Crane, Praying Mantis, Snake, Monkey, etc . . . Hercules killing a lion up close and personal is myth. Khabib Nurmagomedov learned wrestling by wrestling a bear when he was a kid. That's something straight out of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. And that is not Mythology. It's real, it's damn real!
Still can’t beat 1000 Chinese martial arts combined. These ancient methods are long gone mostly… oh and also there are grappling masters in China who kill judoka and don’t show themselves. Of course olympians can keep their pride and the true stay humble only having what they need.

It's called 'mata leão'. "Leon" is spanish.. This technique is named after the myth of Heracles.
@@basedvorenus7497 fucking sick I learnt something today and I am 100% going to enlighten my fellow white belts about this on the mats tomorrow
In catch-as-catch-can wrestling it was called strangle hold (as in Ed "strangle" Lewis) and later sleeper hold😂😁✌️🙏

I'm in the middle of trying to write a fantasy world with an ancient Greek esc setting. Your videos are going to be very useful.

Good luck bro, hope your story will make it big. Using ancient greece for a fantasy setting is really cool.
