In my personal experience with mentors having met 1000s of of them, most mentors seem to genuinely care about new players and for the most part, my interactions with mentors have been positive or not remarkable enough to remember. The only negative interactions I've had have been a mentor giving bad/confusing advice about how to play Astro (they didn't know how new astro worked and apologized) and a mentor that got mad at a level 60 Dark knight for not understanding a mechanic (the mentor left the duty). With 1000s of interactions with mentors, only 2 of them being negative is a pretty good ratio.

I think my best compliment I've received in ffxiv was when someone told me at the end of a dungeon, "yours is not a burger king crown" (a negative implication nickname for the mentor crown). I had helped with advice / etc in a dungeon, though i can't recall which dungeon anymore. Good series, let's go.

"Good Mentors stay silent" Last night, I got queued into Cruise Chaser Normal, I'm with 3 mentors and 4 sprouts. We wiped 3 times, and the mentors stayed silent. Me and another sprout ( I'm positive that was an alt) gave advice and i got 3/7 comms.

You are a braver & better man than I. Your rant in the first part of the video is exactly why I've never bothered doing or even unlocking mentor roulette despite being a battle mentor (I'm also one of the ones who turns the crown off). I mostly play after work, and most of the time I just don't have the spoons to deal with vitriolic reactions to advice.
So good on you for doing what you do for this community because I can't. I hope you keep it up. 🙂👍

15:15 People who emote to leave just gets instablocked. They're so corny for that. I don't even know at this point. You're a Dark Knight in Toto Rak where AOEs clear this dungeon like no other business. You have an ultimate weapon. This should just be another day in the office. This was my biggest takeaway from this.

Thank you for the rant in the beginning. I have been a mentor for a couple of years now, and the mentor hate is real. I have met so many good mentors that have taken their crown off because they do not want to deal with it.
On times I encounter the hate - especially when there have been multiple instances in relative short span of time - I seriously also consider taking the crown off and if it is just not worth having it.
People seem to think that I think the crown makes me somehow special and more important than them. It does not.
I am no different from everyone else, the crown just means I want to help, and give advice to people where needed. The real question is why I still do continue being a mentor and suffer the occasional anguish it brings along with it. It is because when someone wants to listen and ask questions it is just infinitely satisfying to know you have helped their path along in Eorzea.
On that note I want to thank you for your effort in making all your guide videos. Your First Day -series and job guides helped me along immensely during my time as new player during the Shadowbringers era, and especially the Your First Day series is something I often link to new players still when they need a more in depth look on all the options they have in this game.

I want to say a huge thank you for not just this series, but all of your videos. I got my mentor crown a month or two ago, while still having the last guildhest to clear, i feel like this series has given me the confidence and push to actually do the mentor thing. I like helping people, and helpful people are the reason I keep playing this game. 'Mentor of mentors' might be a silly title, but hey, its the truth.
    Thanks again Wesk

To spread some positivity! My fav mentor encounter was back when I was a sprout doing Eden Raids for the first time! There was one where most of the party was new to the raid we were doing. So this lalafell mentor put a dorito on himself to guide us all to the safe spots and we only wiped once! I gave him the comm and thanked him in the chat as well. It may not of helped us "learn" all the mechanics but it helped us clear as most of us were realistically not ever going to come back to this fight.
Also the "I don't main this" or "I'm just leveling this" is almost like a defensive response and I hate to see it. They are not giving advise to embarrass you or call you out! Just advise so you can DPS a bit better or maybe understand the class a little more. I ran Prae my first "real" run with RPR and funny enough the OTHER DPS was a RPR (No mentor crown) and they gave me a lot of tips and I feel I'm decent at RPR now thanks to him. I play it now when I run things as DPS :). Just a small "Thank you" and then attempt to use the advice is a great mentality to have and leads to more positive encounters.

I was running a Endwalker dungeon with my partner (from 1.0) and a mentor pinged in as DPS. My partner was tank and I was Healer. We started by explaining I have severe visual impairment and seizures that we will go slow. All I got the entire run was the mentor crapping on me, being condescending, and running ahead to pull more as we weren't fast enough. When they gave advice it seemed intentionally 'meanspirited'.
I am glad to see nice mentors. =)
I have aspirations to be a Crafting/Gathering mentor.

The guild gave me the mount drop and said I am not to return to that dungeon. I look forward to hearing about that legally blind healer. I'm a WHM main and my partner didnt let me play the game till about 500 days ago. I tire and cant play too long do to medical and each dungeon is a pain, each trial taxing but I am finally about to unlock the Rats has Hand (sp) Aethrite. Oof. I remember a gang of free company sprouts, for some reason, wanted to do the ARR extreme trials synced. (I don't recall if I egged them on or if they wanted to do it naturally) Ifret, Titan, and Garuda were not particularly difficult. But Ramah well, he was certainly a major spike in difficulty. IMO, he shouldn't be hard in a properly coordinated team, as the main thing is basically worrying about resource management, and saving stunned teammates
However, this boss is really rough when you're trying to herd cats. On paper, this boss should be easy. But all it takes is 1 or 2 timmies who don't know what they're doing to make things fall apart rapidly. Either when they eat up too many balls and the tank has none left, or when they get the anti-stun shock circle and proceed to forget to save teammates with it.
After about a good half dozen attempts, and most everyone leaving, we decided to just call it off, and have me unsync it just to get it off their quests list.
Edit: Cut down unnecessary mechanic explanation, as Wesk did it more justice then I could.

Sometimes advice sticks...eventually. Not long after the EW pally rework, I was in a roulette with a friend on his PLD, and a mentor in our group said something to him about not using his free Holy Snowflake. My friend said nothing in chat, but in vc, he was bitching along the lines of "blah blah, i know what i'm doing, why doesn't he shut up. I told him to assume it comes from a place of good intent, and asked if he understood the tip. He stayed grumbly about it, but (surprise!) by the time we played the next day, he had researched what the mentor said, discovered the other guy was right, and adjusted his gameplay accordingly.

I wanted to say "thank you" for the message at the start. I finished my 2000 mentor roulette grind last year. When I first started out, I was happy to try and help people and always stuck around for EXs. Funny enough, my second mentor roulette ever was Ramuh EX while I was on AST with 7 first time sprouts. Not sure how we managed, but we got the clear. However, over time, the negative responses to advice or mechanic explanations, people not reading, and even people queuing for EXs with the sole intent to, in their words, "spice things up for mentors" (I got two ShB extremes like this) it was definitely a strain on my goodwill. Sometimes I still want to go back and queue for mentor again, I love that it's a roulette of all roulettes, but those experiences just made it not fun.

I never understood why people blame the Rolomount on the bad state of mentors, with how low the % of mentors who actually finish it is, I dont get why it should be the problem. They come up with masterful solutions like removing the mount from the rolo, so theres even less intentive to run it.

It would be cool if they had a Mentee roulette. So those of us who want to learn the content we don't know can get into groups with mentors and other folks looking to improve, while doing normal roulette stuff with things we know. Or something like that. I want to get better, but I feel like any content I haven't learned yet is me wasting people's time if I'm trying to learn new mechanics.

As a healer, you can save someone that got terrified by Ramuh but not shocked by using rescue, it won't remove the terrify state but at least, they won't die. The only problem is that you can't save everyone due to the long CD but if the target is your co-healer, it's very much worth it.

Technically, I think it then becomes a great symbol. You went through all that, randomly, without much reward, with ridicule, and you get an ugly crown. It symbolizes the true state of being a mentor perfectly; that is, not a respected job.

I totally understand as someone who recently unlocked mentor roulette, I'm always afraid to give someone advice or correct them on something in fear or being accused of being rude or bossy. Even when the team will constantly wipe I still stay silent. It just sucks feeling like that and its sad to see the majority of the community agree to the whole "mentors are always wrong and shouldn't be listened to". I've seen a lot of kind and patient mentors who are willing to help out and be patient with not only new players but players that just aren't that comfortable with what theyre doing as well. I believe there are more good mentors out there than bad, just most of them decide to stay quiet and hide which is really sad.

  • @Faythe1981

I believe you mentioned it in a previous video in this playlist there is, "no really good incentive to be a mentor with the exception of the mount." This is extremely true as giving good advice to others that are clearly having trouble is not rewarded. Yes, you may get a commendation but if you're a mentor already then those commendations are not needed anymore... for anything, maybe a hit of dopamine for about 0.5 seconds? But yeah, if Squeenix gave more incentive to be a helpful mentor then you'd see many more players being instructive when choosing to put on that mentor crown.
Regardless, I've experienced about every situation you've gone through thus far and I've only done about 85 mentor roulettes LOL. Keep up the fantastic work!

I'm a highly anxious person, like disorder level. As a sprout when I started tanking, I had a macro greeting explaining I was new to tanking and appreciated any help/tips. I got so much great advice, from mentors and non mentors, but mostly mentors! Kind strangers explained how to wall to wall, using cds, efficiently pulling groups, using invulns etc. Was just a really great experience, and now I'm a tank main :) My favorite role for sure. And while I do have mentor status, I do not use the crown because of the stigma. But I still try to pay that advice forward and help where I can, giving advice and such. :) Especially to newbie tanks.

Second one right after as smn (it was even a duty in progress), which was cleared in 3/4 tries. Probably because we had a whole lot of mentors who knew what they were doing and 3 smn'ers in total. I personally tend to try and be decent enough with a majority of all jobs to a point of "I may not be the best to get in a Roulette, but I'd like to think I'm not the worst either" (as I'm sometimes in the mood to let random chance choose the job I play). But even with that in mind, Scholar is probably my least favourite job and the only reason it was my first Healer at 90 was because of Summoner. I don't exactly know what it is, but something about Scholar just feels weird to me.
Also, while I could see the appeal of leaving pre-6.1 Totorak (even if I still wouldn't do it)... current Totorak is genuinely harmless, so that guy leaving was just weird.
And the rooms before the Worm boss in Cutter's Cry DO still have one purpose left that'll primarily affect new players: They contain enemies needed for the Grand Company Hunting Log.

    • @Cherryblossoms110
      @Cherryblossoms110 8 месяцев назад

I think the main thing that puts people off about Scholar is that you need to be very proactive with ALL of your tools in order to have healing output comparable to the other healers.
There's a learning curve, but once you overcome it, Scholar actually has stronger mitigation and healing tools than Sage.
...it is a pretty steep learning curve, though.
Like, just for AoE healing alone, Sage just needs to know when to use Physis, Kerachole, Ixochole, Panhaima, and Holos.
SCHOLAR, on the other hand, needs to know when to use Deploy Adlo (which is already 2 to 4 skills (Recitation, Adloquium, Protraction, sometimes Fey Illumination)), Sacred Soil (and you gotta make sure your party's likely to stay in the bubble during the time you use it, or you don't have a mitigation), Summon Seraph, Fey Illumination (and you need to know whether or not the attack you're mitigating is magical or else it's going to do nothing), Fey Blessing, Whispering Dawn, Expedient... and you need to be far more picky with when you use Dissipation as opposed to Sage's Rhizomata.
Honestly, it's a nightmare, but it's very satisfying once you have it down.

I can 100% attest to the idea that mentors just don't want to be seen as such. I unlocked mentor roulette a few weeks ago and I haven't touched it since I learned that it forces the crown upon queing. I main tank so I'm already treated as a second class citizen, no need to add the bad rap mentors get on top of that.
I do try to help when I'm able but since I don't display my crown I don't have a comparison of how well my advice is taken. Sometimes they take it well and other don't, simply put.

I completed my 2000 mentor roulettes by playing mostly war and mch. Most dungeons go smoothly enough on war since you have the most agency and mch is just good in general since you have access to peloton, to force slow groups to trudge along, and the aoe lb to use on the final mob pack for better time efficiency, and the benefit of "selfish dps"(I dont know the exact term). After sometime I learned that it was best to just completely hide my chatlog unless I absolutely needed it like if someone dc'ed or something. I typed nothing, no matter how menial. I would always make sure to com my healer or co-dps so I could compensate a little bit for being a jerk.

Tbh I share your feelings on this topic. Just renewed my mentor status and started to spam roulettes and honestly ALWAYS scared to give advice on rotations. Like I had Levi EX and was explaining the mechanics, all fine, sprouts learned slowly and we cleared in the last 10 minutes of the instance (also one mentor just left mid instance???) and I saw how our RDM was hardcasting Verthunder and very gently asked about this but were left without an answer and just thought "Okay, don't want the drama, glad we cleared leaving now" 😅

at 12:50, this is not necessarily a bad response.
They might be finding an excuse on why they are playing bad instead of criticising your teachings, in a "oh, I already knew this but was just bad, sorry" kind of way.
I feel like the whole tensness behind "mentors get attacked for no reason" (which is fair) also makes people more prone to interpreting things as attacks.
But I don't have the full context, maybe they kept ignoring your tips, or there was more beyond that interaction

I read their 3 messages as "Sorry, I really am not putting a lot of brainpower into the game RN", "This is an easy dungeon, so that's why I'm not focusing that much" and "My goal here is purely to lvl up, I'll bother learning my character once I actually have skills that I can care about"
Which really feels like an excuse as to why they were in need of an advice, more than saying your advice was ill placed and not needed.

In regards with the bloat of content that the mentor roullet brings, do you think spliting the roullet into two or more sections would work?
Like ARR/HW followed by SB/ShB and them EW/DT(when it's in the game). It would still be a bunch of content to be good at, but mentors could at least pick what they think is duable at their level of experience.

    • @WeskAlber
      @WeskAlber  8 месяцев назад +1

No, I don't think that would work too well. Consider that dude who left Toto-rak. A 10 minute run was too scary so they took a 30 minute penalty? Or more if they leave runs often. That dude sure as hell wouldn't queue for ARR/HW. I feel most people give up on Extremes by HW, and almost 100% by SB. I've never gotten a non-Rath EX from SB.
The real issues are Extremes - since its easy enough to face roll through casual content you've forgotten - and people who refuse advice.

not a mentor myself but i had an.... interresting run as healer with a sprout tank doing ARF in a roulette with a friend of mine (i've been trying to help said friend work on their gear) the sprout tank seemed to be doing fine.... up until Ascian Prime. Every pull, he didn't seem to get it's nearly impossible for me to break the chain between me and him if he stay n the middle of the room for the boss. i politely try to explain to him multiple times i need his help the break the chains and it's okay to reposition the boss after that mechanic is dealt with. he told me to.... "heal through it,". I tried explaining over and over again that the chains keep pulsing untilt hey are broken and no amout of healing on my part would solve the problem. he called me bad for politely trying to help and saying he shouldn't have to do something just to accomodate a "bad healer".
It ended with a vote abandon. said DRK was watching the cutscenes so i assume it's just his frist time witht his fight and just refused to learn it, i hope someone can get though to him in the future that sometimes tanks need to move for mechanics.

i remember vividly mentor roul throwing me into that one alexander raid with the assembler boss. nobody really knew what they were doing aside from three or so people, and the ones who had no idea what to do kept doing the mechs wrong. so we wiped, and immediately, a sprout started accusing me, because as a mentor, i need to explain the fight in full detail or else i shouldn't be a mentor at all... while i was already typing out advice. you just can't win as a mentor. either people tell you to shut up, or they demand a fully detailed guide and if you don't provide it the moment you load into the instance, you're a terrible person.

And...they (the new person) also forget how mentor roulette works. *They* (the new person) actively queued to be in that specific instance. *They* (the new person)queued in ill prepared. *They* (the new person) didn't do mechanics properly. You didn't do any of those things. The game, randomly assigned them a mentor from the Mentor queue. And even then, it's not your job to be an expert in all things FFXIV. Be helpful of course, but very very very few of us, even if we played the content when it was fresh, remember every little detail. Often I'll be in something with other mentors, a mechanic will happen and you'll see a 'lol oh that's right I forgot that'. Some mentors are really good at verbally explaining. Some are really good at visually explaining. Some are good at just being a consistant body. And even then, stuff has changed or maybe that mentor sure, they cleared Zurvan EX....but not in years...or not with having to deal with soar now....or not even every unsync'd. It doesn't make them bad. It makes them human. And they are a good enough sport to queue the most random of all roulettes and give it all a fair go. They might not even be on their main class. (It's a long roulette and somedays you feel like a yolo)

There's...layers to this problem. One of those I encountered a lot is people who have the crafting mentor crown (which should straight up be removed since you can get this one just doing custom deliveries and has literally negative merit in obtaining since you can be a crafter mentor and not even know how to make a crafting macro) and are giving straight up bad advice and when a combat mentor corrects them they go ape shit. Which leads to the next, some people do not handle criticism even when positive/constructive and will tell the mentor they dont pay their subs. Tbh I rarely encountered actually bad mentors. But I did see plenty of toxic sprouts though but everyone say we all love sprouts. I feel the reps both groups have should be reversed. Once I got a Paladin that told me to regen his MP cuz that was my job as a healer because he didnt read riot blade's tooltip and never saw him use atonement. And I told him he should read his tooltips because healer arent mana battery and he rage quit the dungeons 😂

I have a Burger King crown in the game, with over 4,000 comms (which I think is a lot considering I only started in late 2020). However, I almost always wear my Crafting one (and sometimes the PvP one) instead of the Battle or overall one, as I find it leads to less stigma/problems. I am not a particularly great raider (although I have cleared multiple savage fights and gone into ultimates) but I like being on the relaxed side of mentors lol. I usually ask in fights with specific mechanics (especially with a first time bonus) if anyone would like a refresh/explainer, and go from there.

  • @kisparks

Maybe i should turn my crown back on, but the other day I had two different tanks in two different dungeons get mad at me. First one got huffy with me because I asked them to try using mits, turn on tank stance and face the boss away. They claimed I was attacking them. The 2nd was upset and the ypyt type slowly single pulling every thing. We kindly asked to go faster, They rage quit and we got a better tank as a result.

Well then, the intros subject somewhat fits well but on the other spectrum with my recent mentor roulette debacle. I, playing dps, and a healer mentor was in qitana ravel with a tank brand new to the dungeon. The healer mentor obviously was experienced enough to heal so they tell the tank to pull everything, I said to pull as much as comfortable. After the first little mini boss in that dungeon, the tank wasn't up for wall to wall pulls, but the healer asked them to keep it going. They did and everything went well so far, healer is just a bit abrasive but not the end of the world. But mob pull after the first boss is where things get dicey. The new tank still doesn't really feel comfortable doing wall to wall, especially since they were taking a lot of damage with the huge number of bats. Our mentor healer then decided to recuse pull them to try and make them pull more. The tank topped for a minute in justified protest against what they did. That mentor defended their action stating it was to "teach tanking etiquette".
This is just really bad mentor mentality, and I said as much to them. It's one thing mentors generally being viewed rather badly, but when a mentor like that comes around and lives up to that stereotype it's just plain awful. Thankfully not much happened after that and it's probably just a minor offence, but an offence none the less so I did report them after we cleared the dungeon.

On Ramuh, if you're not broken out of seduction, you can still survive if the healers rescue you out of the chariot aoe ramuh does afterwards. We had to do that so many times in my mine static. 🤣 *edit* also something i've noticed now that i've run ARR content alot more, alot of the dungeons strangley enough do not expect the tank to grab the adds. For example, Pharos Sirius will punish you hard for the tank grabbing everything on the first boss, espeically if your damage spawns a ton of the dogs.

also i dont think it would have helped since you were healing for ramuh, but in cases where an ex group is having trouble finding a tank/healer i just leave and queue directly into it as the needed role bc its easier to fill a dps slot. yes it means you dont get credit for mentor roulette but i would rather help some sprouts get a clear over having a number go up lol
