    Much of the first mvt is played a little slower than other performances I know, and it gains a lot, especially given Debargue's poetic reading of it. He's consistently the most interesting of today's young pianists.

    Debargue and this ensemble bring full justice to this concerto in a way that I don't think has been done before. I own the complete concertos and have always liked this one a lot, but upon hearing this opening, my jaw dropped at how superior this interpretation is to the recordings I've heard.

    Ce superbe concerto No 5, également nommé l'Egyptien, a été exécuté à la perfection. Camille Saint-Saëns a souvent séjourné en Egypte et ce beau pays l'a fortement inspiré. Nous avons eu l'occasion d'apprécier l'immense talent de Lucas Debargue lors d'un concert et cela restera un moment inoubliable.

    • @kennethdower7425

      Ignored, virtually unknown? Hardly. Certainly French pianists (like here) have been playing the work for many decades, throughout the 20th century and into the 21st. Others come to mind, like Richter who made a specialty of the Saint-Saëns 5th concerto and played it many times. I'd say the first and third concertos are not played or heard often.

    • @paolohudson
      @paolohudson 4 года назад +5

      It could certainly stand to be played more in music schools instead of the usual suspects (i.e. Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, etc)
      The one that gets me the most is Saint-Saëns' 3rd concerto. It is completely ignored by pianists and there are almost no live performances on RUclips, meanwhile it has some stunning melodies, an extremely catchy third movement, and is tough as hell.

    • @62pianoguy
      @62pianoguy 3 года назад +5

      Debargue does play this passage beautifully (it reappears at 20:34), but the unique effect is due mostly to Saint-Saëns' ingenious chord voicing and dynamics. The leading melody--marked to be played mf--is actually in the left hand (moving stepwise up and down an F-major scale, starting on the third scale degree: A, B-flat, C, D, etc.). The right hand, more than an octave above--and marked pp--is delicately adding the remaining pitches of a major triad above each melody note, treating each note as the bass of a root-position chord (e.g. A major, B-flat major, C major, D major, etc.) rather than producing chords drawn from an F-major scale.
      The effect is that of the natural overtones of the melody somehow magically being reinforced; normally in that register of the piano such overtones are too weak to hear. The parallel chord movement (especially the parallel fifths) also has a deliberately archaic quality, not unlike medieval faux-bourdon, although the actual timbre sounds more as though the strings of the piano are being partially stopped--a clever illusion.
      The music for this passage can be seen starting at 12:21 in the Thibaudet recording here: ruclips.net/video/OVZcDkJ3-bQ/видео.html

    The right tempo, unlike Thibaudet's break-neck fast tempo, which I dislike. But still, the very end of the final movement here is faster than is really required, which takes points away from this performance. Jean-Philippe Collard and the Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by André Previn is the reference performance to judge by.
