I posted this AWESOME review to Kelli Moroney's facebook page....I told her you are a big fan! ..... she LOVED IT!!!!! She said OMG thank you so much! That ROCKS! Then she posted it to her fan page!!!!!!! You're a rock star!!!
I didn't know the guy at the end DMK who kept breaking Regina video game records in the movie theatre. It was awesome when one of the bad guys who came to the mall to snatch girls "I'm not crazy. I just don't give an F..".
I like that the cheerleader sister is actually portrayed as a well rounded character instead of a hateable idiot blonde like she would have been in a slasher movie. I also love the utter 80s-ness of this movie and the abandoned city scenes in this are seriously my favorite abandoned city scenes of any movie; if I had to live in a movie's post-apocalyptic world it would no doubt be this one's.
aliensexgangchildren I agree, she wasn't playing the stereotypical stupid blonde, which was refreshing. On top of that, Kelli Maroney is a super nice lady. Really cool.
I love abandoned city scenes, as well. I grew up in the 80s when you could still drive for more than five minutes before you became stuck in a merciless traffic jam. An empty city seems so damn peaceful it hurts a little. It hurts to know that we need an apocalypse to ever feel this sense of calm again.
Thanks! She contacted me to twitter to tell me she loved it. Very cool. Always glad when an actor/actress (or anyone that worked on the movie for that matter) sees one of these.
I saw this in the theatre on a business trip. Bored as hell and there was a theatre down the street from my motel. It’s been a guilty pleasure for years.
@@joshuaperrine2019 Just a term. I absolutely love this film. Wonderful cast. Cary Elwes and Robin Wright were perfect in their roles. And Andrei the Giant….so funny.
I thought that Kelly Mahoney was great, particularly the scene where Reg and Sam are sitting on the police car and she starts talking about her friend and she suddenly realizes her friend is dead when she started talking about the friend flunking algebra. The way she just starts realizing what is happening is actually brilliant. She is definitely underrated. The lead mall zombie was also brilliant. His use of dialogue and his casual menacing nature - a malignant nerd - was also brilliant. As for the people wandering around we should just remember there are zombies wandering around because not everyone instantly died.
Wow, now I know why the makeup effects look so good (I see the resemblance with Freddy Kruger with that zombie dressed like a cop in that dream sequence; obviously done on purpose). I've loved this film since I first viewed it in the 1980's and have only grown to appreciate it more since, due to its breezy storytelling and solid dialogue. Also, I think the overall cast rules!
So I finally came back after seen it and had to see your review again. I'll be hounest. The thing that make this one stand out is how perfect the mainleads are. It's not often women in sci-fi thrillers are interesting, as they usually play the tiny role that the guy in the movie had. But I had a blast seen them perform at one other! Very attractive as well.
Cecil, I just wanted to say that your videos helped me out during the pandemic. I was deeply depressed, working from home, not being able to go outside, but I used to watch your reviews and slowly resurfaced to life. And, of course, you gave me a LOT of awesome movie recommendations. Including The Night Of The Comet, which has become one of my absolute favorites. Thank you so much.
I really appreciate hearing that, thank you very much. I know how hard the pandemic was (I lost my best friend from cancer fairly early on) and the whole thing is kind of a blur. I appreciate that I was able to keep going and to make the world a little brighter for some fellow movie lovers. You are very welcome, I hope you have a great week. :)
I saw this movie on HBO a few years after its release. I was just flicking through the channels and found it just as it was starting. What luck! I LOVED this movie.
How much did you say they made this movie for? $700,000? That's it? This was an amazing movie for $700,000 or whatever it costed. Why did movies from the 80's have that charm? Movies now days just don't have that.
+Paul TheSkeptic I think some of the the charm comes from the fact that movies back then, and even before, weren't all soulless CGI shitfests like most movies these days. Back then special effects were like magic tricks. When people saw SFX back then they'd wonder how they were done. When you see something now, you just know, and most of the time, can tell, that it's just a CGI effect. Don't get me wrong, CGI has it's place, but I think it's overused.
oxyKILLdone I agree. Without the flash, you had to have a good story. We can't rewind though. We can't go back. We can only enjoy the classics and hopefully something new will come out that won't be too bad.
I would argue that the switch from film to digital has something to do with that "feeling" 80's movies gave us that you just don't get anymore. Also everything is so stylized now with full color correction, thanks "O' Brother, Where Art Thou", and an over reliance on CGI. To me it feels so "Millennial"? I"m not sure what to call it. It's like the difference between the feel of the original Star Wars movies vs the prequels. The prequels just have this fake overly stylized and artificial feel to them. It's one of those I can't define it but I know it when I see it kind of things, at least for me.
I remember watching this in the theater, at age 6. It always stuck with me and I never knew what it was.. slowly the internet remembered for me. Thanks!
I thought the actor who played the leader of the mall zombies was good. He was like some malignant geek who just was given the green light to go psychopathic. He handles his lines well and when he takes off his sunglasses he really gets scary. I think this movie just had good writing compared to other movies of this type.
Yeah that's precisely the idea. He makes mention of being "nothing more than a mere stock boy a day prior" (or something to that extent), alluding to his status in his place of employment--as well as in society--as essentially the bottom rung of the ladder. Being skyrocketed to a leadership position overnight, after presumably everyone who's ever made his life a living hell has perished, while he's still miraculously standing, has sent him on a grandiose power-trip. This movie had some depth for an 80's sci-fi/horror romp. I even love that subtle nod to the Hispanic community's eternal love of JFK and RFK when it shows that portrait of them (knocked off the wall) in Hector's madre's home.
@@resofactor I especially thought she was rather fetching in "Eating Raoul"; maybe it was the various costumes Mary Bland wore, her attitude, or that she radiated sex appeal for me there, but I was all in with her in that picture.
I find the DMK thread one of the most satisfying in the film. Before she really appreciates what's happened, Reggie knocks DMK off the scoreboard of her favorite video game, potentially erasing the last evidence he ever existed, since everyone's been turned to dust. At the end of the film, it turns out he's still alive, so she didn't. It's like. . . the unforeseen consequences of our actions, how what feels incredibly important one moment can be not only completely irrelevant but actively harmful the next due to a simple change in uncontrollable circumstances, and how we're all a lot more connected than we often like to think.
Thanks! I didn't notice the folks in the background for the longest time. However recently I was watching on my Kindle Fire and my eyes wandered and I noticed them. They did a great job of cropping out people as well as they did! They couldn't afford to shut down the streets so they just had to film at weird times and hope for the best.
Dude you're probably the most comprehensive reviewer I ever came across. Hilarious, entertaining, informative and insightful all in one. Your reviews aren't a comedy bit like the Nostalgia Critic nor are you overtly serious like Rob Ager (both of whom I respect for what they do). These reviews are a good balance. And you're light years ahead of all those so called internet age 'reviewers' like Jeremy Jahns and the rest of that bunch. This channel should be required viewing for all true film fans
Nice. I had a feeling I saw this movie before. It was during one of the good 'ole Sunday morning Mantinee that would come on the TV. Something this generation of kids will never enjoy or suffer. Ha. The movie was listed on the bill for a local theater's sci-fi movie marathon. Thanks to your video I know more! Keep making videos! :D
Just a small correction, but an important one (if you're a production designer like I still sometimes am). The department store interiors were not shot at the Sherman Oaks Galleria; they were shot in Bullock's Wilshire. It's still there but it's now a law library; at the time it was an up-and-running department store. They shot overnight and had to be out and cleaned up before they opened for business in the morning. If you watch those scenes you'll notice that there's one glass display case and one large shoe display that get shot up, over and over - those are the pieces they built and brought in. Everything else was existing COM.
I seriously need to watch more of your videos, I have, can't remember them all.. this was just one of the first and one of my favorite movies. I know the channel (don't quote me).. Everything Wrong with movie videos.. and I get it, I do like seeing the bad wrong with flicks, as you point out in your videos.. but what I love is you take your time, shows scenes in good lengthy fashion, comment on things that aren't so bad but are a homage to or rift of etc. And then, at the end finish it off with so many fun facts about a movie that have to rewatch it, memorize it, or praise it, or all of the above. And that's what I appreciate most about your videos, is you praise the movie, that I also love. Your videos are best, and so informative for any old, new, or inspiring fan! Sorry.. had to comment. :)
I was going to mention it but didn't for 2 reasons. 1) I had more than enough info about the film and 2) I'm doing Eating Raoul in the future and since I have less info on that movie, I'll take some time out to talk about Chakotey
This is one of those movies that I remember from USA up all night back in the day. I the DVD a few years ago back when Borders book store was still around. When I watch it now it's a bit amazing you don't see female leads like Reggie and Sam. I mean when was last time did you see a female lead character talk what Superman can see through or cheerleader who isn't a bimbo or obsession with cheer leading. I sometimes think of Reggie and Sam when I flipping through the channels and land on The Big Bang Theory or god forbid a Transformers movie. Why can't we get more female characters like them, fun, interesting, human and charming. How hard can it be, after all they did it in the 80s.
Your numbers will grow I'm sure of it. Maybe not as quickly or as exponentially since you do fairly obscure, older movies but I know true movie fans will eventually find this channel. I know you've introduced me to some good, underrated movies and I've grown in my appreciation of obscure 'B' movies as a whole. Cheers man
I've seen this one and I love it! I love good cheese like this! And it has my kind of humor in it as well! I love that bit at the end! "is this your car" "Yes, I got 23 more like it!"
I watched this when it came out (because I'm old) and it's a favorite ... one thing to remember is that Halley's Comet was scheduled to make its rare visit to our "neighborhood" in 1986 so it was a topical subject. I always thought of this as not so much a low-budget horror film but rather a low-budget independent film of that era, like Repo Man, Eating Raoul, The Brother From Another Planet, etc. Also watch Robert Beltran put on and take off his gloves several times in the radio station.
I continue to love this movie. I love that shot of the sun going down over LA with the voice over. It would come on HBO in the mid to late 90s,always a treat.
i do not remeber how i found it bu really glad i did and 1 of my favorite scene its when the shoot is on a rooftop and they turn the camera left to right to show the city, whit the color of the sky i was breataking and wish i was the 1 filming that scene but not the 1 to bring the camera on the roof.
me i believe was La guerre des tuques, the original movie and 1 of the 2 bets movie whit cildren actors and actress and also y favorite franch canadien movie.
You knowledge and insight into these kind of movies is amazing. Love the trivia. A lot of these movies I have never seen, but love watching the reviews, it not only makes me want to watch more, but draws me more into the whole film making industry. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
One of your videos was in my "recommended" and rather than watch that video, I immediately used search to see if you had done this movie. I'm glad you did. And I learned a few new facts about it that I didn't know! Yay!
I really appreciate this. It's not easy to stand out in this overcrowded market but I like to think I am carving a niche in my own way. Unfortunately, I don't have their numbers...yet. Also, I am very happy you found my channel. I've had some of the coolest folks on youtube. It's not just an endless sea of trolls!
I was going to comment the first time I saw this video, but it slipped my mind until I saw it again. Just wanted to say thanks. I watched the movie ages ago on cable and didn't catch the name. I really enjoyed it. Watching this it just dawned on me that it was this movie. It has a really interesting vibe and atmosphere. Glad it wasn't completely forgotten. There's another film I always try to find the name of and can't. I know there was numbers in the title, and it was about this kinda SWAT team getting chased through a warehouse with a creature in it. It's too similar to a few other movies to be able to figure it out.
I never knew this was a 700K budget! That's incredible. A FANTASTIC movie especially given the budget. This director should be given the keys to Hollywood given this amount of creative economy.
That is exactly why I like his reviews so much. Most of the movies reviewed here and on his site are fairly older films, so it's more of a trip down memory lane for the sake of nostalgia and laughs than it is a by-the-book review. If you watch any of the reviews on thatguywiththeglasses or blip, his keep with that tone. I like a lot of the tgwtg reviewers, but none have consistently made me laugh as much as goodbadflicks reviews has.
I've met Catherine Mary Stewart, Kelli Maroni, and Mary Wornov. They all signed my DVD. I thanked Catherine and Kelli for impacting my adolescence.

I loved this movie. As a child of the 80s.
This movie *got* me into horror and post-apocalyptic stuff. I loved this film, and hearing all this stuff just brought back so many memories. Thanks!
Yep, Eve of Destruction is coming soon. Gregory Hines was a badass!

OMG this is my absolute favourite good bad flick. this was shown before ghoulies II at our local and I just loved it.
This movie kicks ass.
Thank you! A lot of work did go in to this but it was worth it, Kelly Maroney approved!
You knowledge and insight into these kind of movies is amazing. Love the trivia. A lot of these movies I have never seen, but love watching the reviews, it not only makes me want to watch more, but draws me more into the whole film making industry. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
I totally remember this movie from when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories man.
One of my favorite movies ever. A staple in my household.
i am cuious can you name 10 of your favorite movie.
Another gem. remember Video Dead
This was so a wonderful recap. Thank you! This movie is a classic!
Better then the multi-million dollar blockbusters they make today
I liked the fact that this film had the song girls just wanna have fun.Classic song for this cult classic.
I feel lucky to have seen this in the theater when it came out one of my all-time favorite movies
Was it "Storage 24"?
I never knew this was a 700K budget! That's incredible. A FANTASTIC movie especially given the budget. This director should be given the keys to Hollywood given this amount of creative economy.
LOVE this movie!
Love how you threw in that imitation at the end.. guess they couldn’t afford the actual version! Lol
I have it on pre-order. I'm super excited to see all the bonus stuff.
The random people seen could be explained way as zombies roaming around.
this review must have taken you forever to do. So much research was required....aces man. This is an excellent film and an amazing review!
The movie is a nice time capsule of the '80s. The vibe is there and so is the attitude. It's just a B-movie, so relax.
Love this film! Had no idea what it was going to be about when I started watching it and was in stitches at the clever humour.
