    My LSD spider gears ground themselves to dust.. Replaced gears.. Main pin broke and dropped spider gears.. Destroying ring and pinion gear. Got a rear end from junk yard that ended up having the g80 in it.. Only paid 170$. Im really happy with it. Got it dirt cheap

    I've got the locking differential on my 2017 Chevy Colorado with the diesel engine. Recently drove through some thick mud that was covered with vegetation so I wasn't able to tell right away how deep the mud was. The differential kicked in when my tire started slipping and I was able to get out. Works great and I'm glad I have it.

    It works fine until you abuse it. WOT takeoffs on dry pavement kill em quickly. When one tire is spinning and that pawl catches it can only take so much shock before shit breaks.

    • @donr416
      @donr416 3 года назад +2

      That is exactly correct. Do not abuse it on dry pavement and it will last - even with a chipped Duramax. Mine has kicked in hundreds of times on mud and snow - sometimes even towing and 11 years and 150000 miles later still works perfectly.

    • @huntert6452

      So wot takeoffs on dry pavement kill them quickly? What if both tires have traction (no spin) and you take off at wot?

    If you're going up an incline that curves, will it be locked up? If it's locked, won't one of the rear tires bind up and hop since one wheel isn't traveling as far as the other as in the case of being in 4X4 mode and on dry pavement?

    • @mitchellhanelt5689
      @mitchellhanelt5689 Год назад +3

      It's not engaged by torque, it's engaged by centrifugal forces from the spinning tire, so unless you lose traction to one wheel while going up the hill it would be unlocked

    • @kx8960
      @kx8960 Год назад

      No, the difference in wheelspeed has to be 120RPM for it to lock, way more than you'd get just going around a corner. Now, it will be a "thumper" (all or nothing, not like an LSD), locking and unlocking suddenly, so, there's that.

      Yes it is completely possible.. BUT all you need to do is look in the glove box for a sticker with three to four digit codes on it, one of those codes will say "G80" and boom you already have it, which you should cause its a standard feature for all GM trucks, even my 05 Cadillac CTS has it..

      Same old junk. My 2016 2500 locked up for no reason once in a parking lot, then unlocked and drove fine. Warranty was about to expire so i took it in and they found pieces of it in the bottom of the diff housing. Never abused since new. I figure there are many broken G80s driving around unbeknownst to the owners. If it wasn't covered under warranty, I definitely would have replaced it with something better. I put a Lock Right in my old 98 once I found the factory unit to be NFG. It's really the worst kind of locker; Too slow and it won't lock, too fast and you dig holes or break it.

    The G80 "GovBomb" is trash as far as longevity is concerned. The aggressive 'at speed' gear engagement is a terrible engineering principle, and it's crazy that GM promoted it so hard. Torsen had a better design. Eaton even has another design the TruTrac (or however they spell it) is infinitely better.
