I think the hesitation from the crowd to clap wasn't out of rudeness but honestly if I am totally encompassed in Chances speak, I think the audience is in awe of him. A beautiful thing. I enjoyed listening to him and learning about his understanding of his experiences. Just beautiful.
You are right. We need to fight the stereotype that rappers are barely literate. I'm 75 and not black so I never connected with rap and therefore never experienced the real people behind the rappers.
@@barbaradavis393 he is the first rapper I connected to thanks to Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me on NPR, years ago. My children have since taught me that rap is poetry and very instructive. It doesn't mean I like it all, but I do like Chance.

I think there's a middle ground between making sure our kids know about the reality of the world and avoiding traumatizing them. Kids absolutely need to learn about this stuff but at the same time I'd be really worried about triggering trauma that could last a lifetime. I'm an adult and I still struggle with coping with the horrors of the world like the Tulsa massacre.

his grandmother is a wonderful person, I'm sure..but 6 is still too young to 'educate' children about certain issues re: their DEVELOPMENTAL STAGE, psychologically & what they can handle, *full stop.* and older generations - unless they live in that world of information re: UPDATED psychology facts re: babies, toddlers, children, teens - they don't understand: that certain issues presented to children, when they're too young, does more harm than good...and as there are ways to *age appropriately* educate them & as they grow older & THEN bring them up to speed. as our mother, a professional educator & many of her teacher friends, who were also parents, did: supplementing our USA black history knowledge because the schools were so lacking re: the topic.
