Silly chat regarding the 10 situation, Crowley is number 1, we want to be giving others opportunities, we want coaches that review performances based on how they implemented the game plan, made decisions and how they adapted when needed. So Crowley is going to be held to a higher standard. Crowley has all the attributes and the drive to keep getting better, his defence is rightfully highlighted as top quality. It’s likely in six nations he will play most of the minutes so if we don’t give game time to other 10s now we would not see them much again unless there is an injury or until next summer. I think not having Furlong has been a blessing in disguise.
Irish supporter here.....kinda feels like Ireland are entering a similar phase to the end of Joe Schmidts' ireland coaching career. The dynamism and creativity are gone. Hopefully this is not the case and they are able to re-set. I disagree with comments about Prendergast not being ready to come on in an Autumn test. The coaches are obviously seeing him, Frawley and Crowley in training regularly and are probably are of the opinion that he has a higher ceiling and more potential than all of them.
At the first 15 mins of the poscast so maybe it comes up later but I think the attack looked a bit clueless in the second half when they got within 5 meters of the line. This is probably down to having a new attack coach. It took Catt a good 10 games to implement his system hopefully Goodman can improve in that respect but he wasn't that great in his season at Leinster. I also agree we are really missing Sheehan and Conan. I'm just hoping we get through these next two games without losing and gradually improving and then really fix the issues (poor lineout, misfiring atack, discpline, average ruck) by the time the 6 nations comes around. Another point is, if it wasn't O'Connell would the lineout coach not have already been changed by now?
Andy Goodman is just not a good attack coach though in my opinion, when Lancaster was in Leinster there attack was the best in club rugby, he left last year and immediately standards dropped and they were the most inaccurate they had been, similarly Goodman comes into the Ireland set up , Leinster look accurate again and Ireland don’t…
Hilarious. We're either too conservative with young players and not following "if you're good enough, you're old enough." Or we're far too willing to throw a young player in because he hasn't played enough at a high level. Which is it, lads?
@@davidwalker2402 the only caveat to that is the kickable penalties which kept Argentina in the game and ultimately won NZ the game but I do agree it wouldn't be my primary concern
In my view, this has been the best, most insightful and balanced podcast since the game. Totally agree with the 10 position as well as the other comments. Well done guys.
Crowley is the current number 1 with Sam in training as the #2. Sam has been picked to start on Saturday according to the prophet Thornley, so I think Farrell sees him as the 10 eventually, depending on how he progresses. A lot of the penalties came from lack of focus. Joe Mac going offside, Lowe 's silly push, and Bealham's croc roll being the 3 that stand out most to me. However, I think Ireland's big problem now is the lack of carries from the front 5. 40 meters in the game last week is a poor return from them.
I really don't understand the hype around Prendergast. He done nothing when he came on, few left and right passes, tried a line break & got turned over, missed 2 tackles as well. He's way too light, he needs to bulk up. He has great potential but that's all it is, potential. He was class in 6 nations u20's but the step up to international massive.
Would you ever just sit back and say, maybe Andy Farrell, the man behind one of the top attacking game plans in the world the last few years, knows a bit more than you about a 10?
@@bejaysus7388 He is 21 years of age, has played way more minutes than other players his age in the Irish system. Listen, you know he’s better than Crowley, you’re a Munster fan and it’s going to sting when Crowley is dropped. I understand the frustration, but we don’t need to be silly here.
@eoinh3816 is he better than Crowley though. Crowley got a full house v Argentina...... try, conversion, penalty & drop goal. Prendergast came on against the same team with tired legs & scored nothing. His best achievement was he passed the ball left AND right. I hope Prendergast does well today but more importantly hope he doesn't get injured. He's got a very light frame & he playing against the mighty Fijian's, they'll target him.
One of you said that something Farrell said after the game was kind of strange ... I have been wondering about him lately as well. I don't understand what he is doing with dangling Prendergast over Crowley's head at this point and, from all of my years in rugby playing and coaching, poor discipline is almost always a signal that something is wrong on the coaching front.
Crowley for now is first choice, but Frawley and Prendergast need proper test time, this is smart by Farrell, for a couple of reasons, the big one being dept. Ireland needs to get dept in the key positions, with younger talent.
Luke Fitgerald never shuts up about the fact we don't have enough depth. Now he's complaining we're trying to build depth. How do we build any depth without making any changes?
Some of the penalties were purely selfish behavior by the offenders - Lowe, McCarthy and Bealham come to mind. As for the Prendergast hype it seems media driven, with everything Crowley does ‘wrong’ is highlighted. ‘Crowley got removed/ pulled after error’ typifies the media remarks, whereas Casey or Murray come on for the ’livewire JGP’
I agree a lot with what you say about the Prendergast hype, but then you have the really negative talk by Farrell maybe contributing to that ... also, I watch a lot of these podcasts and there are quite a few, obviously Leinster favouring, talking heads who are just dying to get the ten shirt to Prendergast for some reason.
I disagree on the James Lowe one the new laws are there to allow fair contest a blocker got in his way and he pushed him for me that’s a penalty to Ireland.
Interested to know what the lads think of the Doris WPOTY nomination. Based on the past 12 months, it's a bit of a joke. That error he made in the CC final, effectively costing Leinster the game, was braindead stuff. He's also been outplayed by his opposite number several times in big matches. To be fair his breakdown work is top class, but overall he's been nowhere near consistent enough to deserve a nomination ahead of other back rowers.
Andy Farrell seems to be driving the Prendergast hype train. His post match comments - bigging up Prendergast and slagging off Crowley were bewildering.
Lads these are the games to test the other 10s. Crowley is first choice and will play all of the 6 Nations but we need to give experience to the backups.
Far too much focus on finding a single replacement to Sexton. Other top nations have the facility to use any number of 10s without a drop in quality. If we have Crowley, Frawley and Prendergast as quality 10s then they should all compete to get the starting place in e very game. We relied too much on Rog and Sexton respectively in the past, let all 3 10s thrive so we aren't reliant on one.
Why is Farrel angry at Crowley, That's what you can't understand? Its quite simple, Crowley acted like a child after being hit in the head. Andy Farrel is old school, i'm sure he was absolutely furious to see a player behave like that. It makes us all look bad. The fact that he doesn't get a HIA and scores a try immediately afterwards doesn't help.
ireland are terrible. The hooker can't throw. The scrum is laughable. Definately not a weapon. Hanging on every game. The lineout is a disaster. Cian Healy and Peter O'Mahony are the impact players. Are we serious? The 10 is inexperienced. Every other team have figured us out. This will be a bad season for Ireland. If I was Farrell I'd be worried. But he's probably got his mind on the Lions. Ireland are going to ship a lot of heavy defeats in the Six Nations. This team is going backwards.
Be patient, in a few yrs Ireland will have 2/3 quality flyhalves. Sexton should step back and let these new guys develop on their own. Why try to create clones? He was a good game manager and kicker but he was not dynamic or mercurial.
Not being together for five months and then play the all blacks is a weak argument it’s just an excuse mate…. This Irish team is being together in the same system for nine years… !!!
In Ireland, If you don’t get an inter provincial contract your rugby career is practically over. The All Blacks play Super Rugby AND the NPC counties is full of ex All Blacks, future All Blacks, All Blacks that are working their way back from injury or momentarily dropped and making their way back. We’ve got the AIL. We don’t have the depth and unless we create an infrastructure to pick natural raw talent from the thousands that play junior rugby across the country & poach GAA players, we never will! Our four Provence academies are great but not sustainable to compete against NZ & SA consistently. IMO
Good to get a break from Ruadhri O Connor and good to see Ruadhri getting some well deserved stick for being a complete and utter drama queen and cheese ball with his own writing and reporting
Like the answer is obvious lads. This team is fucking wrecked. The minutes these guys have played over the last two seasons has been crazy AND in big games. Andy should be using more players to rest his big game players, but he keeps starting the same guys.
Mike Sherry- ‘He (Jack Crowley) is first choice. If there was a World Cup final tomorrow, he would be starting’. He definitely wouldn’t be starting because if there was a World Cup final tomorrow, Ireland wouldn’t be in it.
Rubbish about Pendergast. Casey and Crowley straight into Ireland squad from U21S and quick lads tour to SA.. don't think they had even had a start for Munster. Frawley to unreliable. Seen to many mistakes. Looks OK when Leinster dominating and going forward against weaker team.
He's been there a long time. I suspect the IRFU are eyes wide looking for his replacement after the World Cup. Hopefully not from inside the camp again . Farrell’s been an asset but been there possibly too long??????
Andy Farrell is moving closer to the England job and once he's finished with the Lions he'll be gone within months. O'Gara will be in. Borthwick is a dead man walking.
