  • I got back into practicing scales and sight-reading from the grade 2 book. 5th Avenue has come along nicely, but I'm still having difficulty with three points in Dig Those Earthworms, where the little finger of my left hand just can't seem to coordinate with two other fingers to play three notes with a swing. Hopefully another week of practice will help.

Shane, swing is a pretty subtle rhythm concept or skill to be doing in Grade 1, since you don't seem to be doing serious rhythm training yet. I watched a classical chamber quartet try to add swing to a jazz piece they were learning and they all found it hard. As a programmer, you may use 'hard' and 'easy' to talk to laymen (at least they used to do that with me.) I've had a piano coach for four years, who puts rhythm first and I have never swung.

Thanks for that insight - I'm not too worried about it (working through difficult/tricky situations/tasks is just part of the journey - in my experience most of life's journeys :-)) but interesting to know that even much more experienced players than myself struggle with it. But I'll get there - may take a few more weeks, but I'll get it sorted. Other than those three places with the left hand, the swinging in the right hand is becoming more consistent so that's positive.
