Prelude in G Major from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1

- When I began this project of playing through Bach's Cello Suites on the Moog, I put my iPhone on a small tripod, put that on a stool, pointed it at the keyboard while I played and took a video that mostly featured the back of my right sleeve. It was rewarded with more views than I expected, and many kind comments, but now that I've learned more about video production and synth technique I wanted to take another crack at it. I'll probably do this for the other iPhone videos that I took as well, in time.
The Gigue from the E Flat Suite is on the way, but needs a bit more practice time! Following that I will need to spend a good amount of time getting to grips with the fearsome Prelude in C Minor.
Keywords: Prelude in G Major, BWV 1007, Moog Sub37
Bach has clearly composed this piece with the Sub 37 keyboard's range in mind.
Haha!
Absolutely. I saw it once in Wikipedia.
I think he actually composed it on a sub37, then went back in time and adapted it to cello
proof even synths cant ruin bach! the voice of god.
😂😂😂😂😂
So beautiful. If J. S. Bach was alive, I’m sure he would write music for synths. Thank you for the inspiration.
I’m sure he would! Thank you for listening.
By the way: ruclips.net/video/rmJeXhcQQa0/видео.html
Or some crazy microtonal stuff
I never considered that before, but I'm sure he would have been elated to work with synthesizers. Damn, awesome thought exercise.
proof even synths cant ruin bach! the voice of god.
These immortal masterpieces played with the synth release all their enveloping harmonic divinity.
Great job and performance ⭐
Beautiful!
That’s a follow!
comment because this deserves the engagement
Cheers haha
how did you get 3 note polyphony on the sub37 on the last chord? amazing stuff :D love this rendition
Cheers! It’s still two-note polyphony, but arpeggiating the chord and adding reverb gives the idea of all three notes.
Impressive. Subbed.
Much appreciated!
I don't see the point. What's so great about it?
I am sure Wendy Carlos would be proud if she'd hear this.
i love that there's not really an attempt to sound like an acoustic instrument and the timbre just celebrates the moog for what it is. Much preferred to some of the stuff from the 70s
Thank you! Yeah - and we’re lucky that if we want to hear something that sounds like a cello playing these pieces there are many videos of great cellists playing them already on RUclips!
proof even synths cant ruin bach! the voice of god.
I think that’s part of what’s great about where synths are as an instrument. We are able to celebrate our past, and our great sounds, and don’t need simply to emulate acoustic sounds now.
@@mdmoran007 I agree!
Lovely. As a cellist and synth player myself I think you did a great job. You could take more time to slow down in certain sections to add intensity and emotion. Bach is meant to be savored!
Fair
Yes!!! We need more Bach on synth
I'll do my best to oblige!

Listen to "Switched-On Bach" by Wendy Carlos 😊
This is kinda techno piece with no kick.
A lot of classical music can be transformed to techno quite easily if that’s your thing!
@@NoiseSupplyCool! Do you know which artist have done this?
@@_CoasterNinjacheck out Sythoney
from what ive seen, its pretty weird that modern music now usually has atleast some form of drums..
and again from what i see it is almost _the_ thing that separates between _classical_ music and _modern_ music
sure classical music uses some snares and probably other percussion stuff but afaik they dont use it in the same way as modern music!!
@@_CoasterNinja Guy called Tremor has some pretty cool classical inspired melodies!
top. you have a perfect legato. i could only achieve that in solo/portamento mode. maybe
Thank you! The Moog has a good keyboard but it can be a bit unforgiving at first - I think I know what you mean.
Ooohhh, alright... Yup. There are many Moog performances of this Prelude out there, but I think this one is now my favorite. It's really clean and well performed! Are you opening the filter with a foot pedal?
Have you considered trying some multi-track organ pieces? I think there's a serious lack of synthesized Bach Fugues out there (performed, not just midi-tracked). When my keyboard chops improve to the point where it's possible, I want to try 1-video-per-voice on my Moog Little Phatty. Moogs can really roar, it's a shame they haven't been used much for pipe organ works!
Thank you so much! Yes, I’m using an expression pedal to control the filter. I have thought about recording some fugues but have found that recording anything polyphonic requires heaps more production time! I find that I need to write out individual parts so that I minimise mistakes while recording monophonically and that I need to make a click track to keep things in sync, which is a bit annoying. I am an organist though and know and like many of the fugues, so watch this space perhaps…
Instant sub. Handling such a wonderful organism with such a beautiful and lovely played harmonic IS real...thank you
What a beautiful sound. You have a new subscriber. I really appreciate how you seem to take careful consideration when you play it on the moog without butchering it. Great automation at the end. Keep the live automation coming, they are so beautiful when you modulate the envelopes. Keep it up 👌
Thank you for your kind words!
Superb!.. Like new Wendy (Walter) Carlos :)
So very enjoyable, thank-you for sharing. People can hit the notes properly, but you were able to add emotional content to the piece which enables it to touch peoples hearts. Well done!
qui il synth è usato solo come fosse un organo elettronico senza modulazioni o filri live
Sounds like something on the Portal 2 OST
It's like something Rick Wakeman would do. Awesome!
Thank you, and thanks also for getting me to look up Rick Wakeman - cheers!
Beautiful playing on a beautiful machine
Fantastic! Thanks so much for making this new version! Especially the final crescendo was beautiful with the slowly opening filter!
Thank you! I definitely thought it might be something you’d approve of 😄
Hey, great video. Could you try to do Fur Elise ? Anyway great vids keep it up :)
I'd think I'd make lots of very serious piano players angry if I did that! Might be worth it.
Did he mess up a little bit there around 1:15?
I have a Bach ache and the only cure is more moog
I really want the low end to have more sustain. The performance was great but on the cello the low end rings out more than in this version
You are of course correct - Bach was very deliberate about the way he took advantage of the open strings on the cello.
Love this video! And the sound especially. I am super curious if this is a preset or if I zoom in and check the knobs I might be able to reverse engineer the sound design 🤣 shucks
Looks like its a preset?
Thank you so much! It's not entirely a preset, but the knobs won't be entirely useful either as I am using an expression pedal in this video to control the filter without using my hands. I'm afraid I can't remember very easily exactly what I did, now, but I think I mentioned it to other commenters!
Beautiful! New subscriber ✌🏻
Thank you!
Bach spielt auf dem Minimoog 🙂
Thanks for posting, what was your main reason for chasing that synth?
When the Sub37 first came out I was a young adult with his first proper job and some disposable income. There was a fair amount of hype around and it and that was enough for me! I then found I didn’t use synths very much in the years that followed so while I kept this one I also didn’t buy any others. And then I had the idea of starting a RUclips channel…
Three hundred year old jazz 🤓
Beautiful patch! Is your modwheel sticky too? I have a tribute sub37 from 2015 and it's hella tacky
Haha yes; it's impossible to clean!
@@NoiseSupply I put saran wrap on mine 🙂
Jean-Michel Bach or Jean-Sebastien Jarre ? 😊
That’s a name I had to look up! Thank you for the encouragement.
Tik tak
Sound like Muse
thus needs to take advantage of the velocity more
You need to be hired for gear demos.
Because you’re making me want to buy this synth
Haha! Cheers.
very good y te lo digo en castellano también, MUY BUENO.
Absolutely stunning
I just wanted to say thank you for getting me so into Bach. I started playing piano not long ago for personal enjoyment and just learned this prelude in G, my first song. Feels like riding a bike for the first time. I bought the Barenreiter Cello suites and the Telemann flute solo fantasies books and looking into the Subsequent 37. That Moog tone is unreal. This channel means a lot to me, thank you very much for getting me into Bach.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! If you’re just starting out it’s important that I suggest you have a look at Bach’s actual keyboard music too: the notebook for Anna Magdalena is a good beginning album and the two-part inventions are good for a more advanced student than that. Have fun and let me know how you go!
@@NoiseSupply I just got the Anna Magdalena notebook and the 2 part inventions. Thanks for the recommendations! I have a lot to dive into now
Excellent!
Wirklich schön! Danke!
Le son n'est pas celui que je choisirais mais la performance mérite d'être saluée !
Nice 👍🙏!
That was transcendent. Automatic sub!
Thank you so much!
This is so amazing, so cool. You play a beautiful piece an gorgeous instrument. I had one and I still miss it! Very nice to hear someone with your playing skills
badass
Beautiful!
🤟
Feels very Droogish. Love it!
Nice but the piece sounds way nicer on cello.
(insert that one J.K. Simmons gif)
Wendy Carlos would be proud 😀
Beautiful! Also what kind of camera are you using? Great quality!
Thank you! It's a Fuji XT3 that I've stuck on the end of the heaviest C stand I could find.
i remember my music school lessons with this song and how i was freezes on exam and was totally not able to play it) was shackled by fear of live playing
Exams are hard, for sure. Thanks for listening!
Finally. Some music in a synth demo and not just some electronic noise and playing too much around with the filters.
That's how the classical musicians and the founding fathers of contemporary music intended their compositions to be played. Only with a Moog.
Haha!
they switched on bach in 2024
If you ever make a video going into the details of arriving at the settings and the automation I would definitely watch
Thank you! I’ll bear that in mind for a video idea.
Just lovely. Thank you for this.
Great job, sounds good !
I love this moment!
This player is fantastic❤
I thing today’s Bach would love to play this on Moog
I think he’d have loved to try a Moog!
너무 좋아요!
I'm blissed! 😍
This is going to be my go to video if anyone asks whether or not 37 keys "are enough".
Haha!
Very nicely played 🙏🏻💎
Seriously brilliant work on this classic N S !
Thank you!
Beautiful
This is amazing
👍🎹👍
Beautiful.
💢Muito Legal! Tem a Partitura p Compartilhar? 🙂
Thank you! If I understand you properly, this is what you would like: imslp.org/wiki/Cello_Suite_No.1_in_G_major%2C_BWV_1007_(Bach%2C_Johann_Sebastian)
This was very lovely. Can I ask what the effect is.
Thank you! It's a modified version of the modulated reverb setting from Logic's Silververb.
Pure excellence!
nice
Looking into getting a synth soon, any recommendations?
Awesome! Without knowing what you want to do with your synth, hardware options are great for the tactility when playing and for gigging; software synths are more budget-friendly and can give you more options. Often there is not much difference in sound quality when you compare high-end software to high-end hardware. This Moog Sub37 is a nice instrument and I’d recommend it to anyone who doesn’t need a polyphonic synth.
I'm always a huge advocate for Bach on synth! Bravo!
Thank you! I’ve always thought that it’s not too dissimilar to playing Bach on the organ, and Bach himself was all about organ music.
Sensational
Very nice
🎂 🎊 🎉
This was amazing
Really beautiful. Nicely and thoughtfully done.
Thank you for your comment!
Awesome ❤
just awesome!!!!
Toll gespielt und toller sound😂😂❤
Danke!
Lovely! 🥰
Amazing!!
wonderfull prelude
Yeah, this is pretty great. Love it.
Thank you!
Awesome!
So beautiful

Bravo 👏
Wow - the RARE keyboardist who also plays synth! Thanks for sharing 👍
Moogs look a lot cooler than they sound. The main reason this sounds good is because it's Bach, not because it's played on a Moog.
it sounds way, way better on the cello, sorry...
Albeit that I love synthesizers, I agree and I think it comes mostly down to the continuous dynamics of the cello and the resonance of the bass strings. It sounds on the Cello lile you can feel the strings resonating in your fingers. I'm also more used to the Cello version which could also be why.
