  • Starbucks brags about offering health insurance to workers. But workers say the plans are unaffordable. Some face crippling medical debt. Others are on Medicaid. And some don’t go to the doctor at all. Now Starbucks is threatening abortion and trans benefits to bust the union.

They claim to have a seat at the boardroom table that represents their workers, but that is an empty chair. Why can't they have an actual representative of the workers sitting at that boardroom table? Unionize and demand access to your seat.

This is a huge thing no one seriously asks for. People accept their pay will be dictated by the executive suite but not the reverse. If labor could deny or chop down compensation packages my guess is we'd see a lot fewer contracts dragged out and strikes.

Did Howard Schultz really think employees are saying Spotify is the biggest benefit Starbucks provides? Even if he was kidding, it's kind of insulting to their employees. I wouldn't subscribe to Spotify even if it was free. With any company, the benefits employees are looking for are: Good wages, good health insurance that's inexpensive with no strings attached, a good retirement plan, good sick and vacation time, and obviously being treated good at the job. If an employee mentions Spotify, they need to use their mental health benefits.

@Brenton Carter While I agree it is paid for with the productivity from my husband, at least they are compensating him more than any other job he’s had before. We don’t live in a system where workers receive the full compensation for their productivity. So in the meantime, the goal is to get the highest compensation for said productivity.

as a former starbucks worker: It is nothing better than any other predatory corporation. Pretend to care, call you a "partner", but are just completely full of shit. Even their fake "sustainability" pledges are ridiculous. Hundreds of Gallons of milk used over a day or two, recycle not a single carton. Everything goes to the trash. Stock options are abysmal, healthcare is pathetic, short shifts, PUNISHED for getting overtime, etc. Working for a small local business has increased quality of life for me 10fold

So some employees don’t use their health care because it sucks and is expensive. While others feel they’re being threatened they may use it and how much that will negatively impact them?
The problem isn’t Starbucks. It’s the massive insurance scam we call our health care system. They would love for you to believe this is a specific company choice and not the system.
Don’t chase the symptoms, go after the actual cause. We need more competition within healthcare and simplified billing. Until then, this will continue.

I can't believe that poor guy with UC has been working there for *a decade* & he's spending half his paycheck on medical bills. Why do people stay with shitty, selfish employers like Starbucks for years & years? He knows Starbucks doesn't "listen to" it's employees, that they are not "partners" -- he should have been out of there ages ago. I'm glad so many of their locations have unionized, but it's all for nothing if Starbucks refuses to agree to a contract. I don't believe there is any legal action from the feds that will be taken after a certain # of months elapses & the employer refuses to make a good faith effort to settle on a contract. Ditto for the Amazon site in SI.

I'm an IBD patient that works at both Amazon and Starbucks. Sbux promised me it was different, it's the same shit, and honestly, Amazon is a little better (it's still fucking terrible). amazon's benefits start on day one, Starbucks makes you work 500 benefits hours and be employed for 90 days. Coward shits is scum and more stores need to put Starbucks in check. They've union busted my store constantly for the last 10 months, mandatory meetings where they imply if we organize we will lose the few benefits we have. It's disgusting, I'm so jaded and honestly at the point of breakdown. I just want to cry all the time

This whole video is upsetting. First of all, we choose our coverage. When you sign up for benefits, you are given a choice of various plans that explicitly detail what you pay for copay, what is covered, and where will take your insurance. As a single person, I pay about $100 a month for 80% coverage. Yes there are cheaper plans for the same coverage with other companies but it’s one of the best. Regarding Neha, when you unionize, the union is your middle man for everything the company will provide for you. If they are saying “you may lose your benefits”, it’s true, the union could say, “we can drop this benefit for other things”. It’s all based on what is negotiated

Walk off and find another job, they don’t provide these comprehensive medical benefits because you will stay without them. If more people are willing to stay than leave this will continue. These high level plans are extremely expensive and how many people are willing to pay much higher price so workers can get covered?

    • @sapphicmorena5791

Better benefits and pay for employees does not translate to higher prices for consumers at all. This is a common myth perpetuated by anti-union propaganda. And just telling people to "find another job" is asinine, you have no idea how difficult it can be for some people, and even if people are able to leave, you're damning some other poor person to replace them and put up with shitty working conditions. Have some generativity, goddamn it.

For that last part where this guy says "They can afford it...", I would be really interested to know if that is something he has a very good reason to think, or if it is just a "big company means they can afford shit" kinda thing. As much as I sympathize with these people, Starbucks has an enormous amount of employees. A marginal increase in cost per employee just might be an unsustainable when you try to apply it to that many employees, so my opinion on the matter would very much hinge on how true that statement is.

    • @mathiasmies7341

Their net income (revenue - expenses) for 2021 was something like $4 billion. Even with a highly liberal estimate of about 500,000 employees (only record of 138,000 but there's a strong likelihood many of them aren't considered to be employed by Starbucks), that's $8,000 per employee which they could throw at medical bills or just raise wages/ disperse bonuses. So yes, Starbucks can afford it.

    • @sapphicmorena5791
      @sapphicmorena5791 2 года назад +3

This is a common misconception for mega-corporations. They try to make it seem like providing better benefits to their employees or paying higher wages is unsustainable, when worst case scenario, it might mean they don't have a 200% profit increase from the year before, maybe only 150% instead. Part of the problem is this constant obsession with growth and exceeding last year's numbers.
