    Hi Gittemary, Im form Mexico so i thought i would correct some misused words here. First, its not only form South America (because that division technically starts from around Colombia) and Mexico is technically a North America country, however, if we concentrate in the areas rather than modern division of countries the correct word would be Central America or Latin America to be less specific. Now, the aztecs refers to a bigger group of indigenous tribes, the correct word is mexicas (the x is pronounced as sh) which is the ones i believe you were referring to. Then, the name theobroma cacao is the scientific name i believe coming form greek; cacao comes from the mayan name meaning something like red strength or fire, and the word chocolate comes from the Nahuatl name (spoken by the mexicas) xokolatl but there is a bit of confusion about its meaning, it can be between the color brown or bitter water. By the way, loved your reaction to colonialism!! Great video!

      Colonisation is a big part of history. Not just England either, Spanish colonised Mexico, Mexico tried colonising America but failed, many people invaded and colonised but only whites are made to feel guilty or like we should feel guilty of what some Englishmen did.. weird being Irish and being made to feel guilty for what Engand/US/Israel have done, especially after what they did to the Irish too, colonised and stood over us for centuries.

      @@chrisom4699 México tried to what? when exactly did Mexico tried to colonise America???? Wow, I'm impressed with the amount of information, you've presented in this video! Did you maybe think about doing similar video about coffee? There are different segments of market (like domestic, premium, specialty), many coffee plantations use monoculture farming system and I'm personally wondering, how sustainable is drinking specialty coffee. Anyway, great video!

      My uncle produce coffee, they often use a lot of pesticides (unless it's like an organic farm or sth) and most of it is grow in monocultural expecially if it's for exportation, some people have the habit of burning down the coffee trees to 'clean' and get the area ready for new ones, in my region most of the farms are old so at least there's not much of destroing native old forests for it (as there is for meat for exemple). That's why I can say for how it's produced in Southeast Brazil (country that exports it a lot)

    So many countries deserve to be filthy rich because they produce these things that we love ex: cacao, sugar, ect
    Honestly if these have to become luxuries to be sustainable, then so be it. I'd pay a premium price to know that the proper people are receiving the money/it's being produced in the best/most sustainable way possible
    (I currently try to only buy chocolate, sugar, and coffee, that is Fair Trade Certified)

    Hi Gittemary! Have you by any chance thought of making a video on environmental impact of collecting - accumulating huge amounts of the same objects as a hobby and how it is overconsumption at its fullest? I have stumbled upon a tiktok where a collector of Kinder Surprise toys has a whole room showered with those tiny plastic figurines and thought of their symbolic value to this person in particular vs. real impact.

    I don’t really like the taste of dark chocolate so it’s been hard to find any that are vegan and actually tastes good so that already cuts down a lot of my consumption there, unfortunately a lot of the sweet-ish ones I can find also have palm oil so that also cuts it down a lot, I think I found a good one that uses oat milk though there’s still that extra resource to worry about, and they also help endangered species! I don’t know what goes into their labor but it definitely seems like a better alternative to mainstream chocolate even though it may just be like you said where it’s better than a big brand like nestle but that’s also not hard to do

    Thank you for this video. However I work in this industry and this concept of direct trade is purely a marketing term. Even if a farm sells directly to a chocolate manufacturer, the way logistics work these days, there are at least two governments (from both origin as well as destination) as well as customs, certifying bodies (the more certificates the product needs, the more expensive and cumbersome this process becomes), banks to process transactions and all of these middle men take a huge percentage of money and also decreasing the ethical standards of a product. These certifications are more of a pain for farmers than a way to protect their rights. Because the certifying bodies are also for profit companies.

    What about the positive impact from the absorbed co2?

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  2 года назад +4

      A positive impact would assume that the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the cacao trees is greater than the amount emitted, which, sadly it isn’t, and a central aspect in this is that there is an overall problem with how farmers are organised/administrated. If an area is dried out from cacao plantations, the farming practise moves to a new location, chops down wild vegetation and plants cacao trees, which then also dry out or mature, and then the land is left bare. From what I can see, older plantations are not used for replanting, which will inherently result in a negative impact 🌿

  • @purringlion
    @purringlion 2 года назад +4

    The CO2 per produced kg seems like a good way to compare different things of the same kind (different meats/proteins, for instance) but it seems a little weird to me to compare a kg of chocolate to a kg of apples this way. We easily eat a kg of apples in a week but definitely not a kilo of chocolate. :D Is there a better way to measure environmental impact, one that may reflect a "per portion" (though what you count as a portion is another great way to cheat the numbers... hello food industry) impact?

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  2 года назад +2

      The comparison was also just meant to provide somewhat of an overview, a ballpark if you will - overall it is really difficult to compare different products in terms of impact because sustainable are measured on many parameters and we use different products in different ways, like you mentioned with quantity vs impact per kg. So the purpose of as simply to determine in which end of the impact spectrum chocolate can be placed, but perhaps comparing it to other sweets and snacks would have been more helpful 😅👌

    • @purringlion
      @purringlion 2 года назад

      @@Gittemary Yeah, that was part of why I asked, it seems like an incredibly difficult thing to measure. The ballpark positioning makes perfect sense on an industry level, I think that was super useful. Comparing it to other sweets & snacks would've been a nice addition, yeah, but it's still an awesome video. Heck, everything that makes me think is an awesome video!

    •  2 года назад

      I don't quite agree with you.
      I more easily eat a kilo of dark chocolate than a kilo of apple in a week. I eat chocolate every day whereas my consumption of apples depends of the seasonal production. And lots of people I know also eat chocolate every day but not apples.
