Gjirokastër Castle is a large, historic fortress in the town of Gjirokastër, southern Albania. It has been an important site since its founding in the 12th century, though much of the structure we see today was built during the 19th century by the Ottoman Empire. The castle stands on a hill overlooking the town and the Drino River valley, offering strategic advantages throughout history.
Today, part of the castle houses the National Museum of Armaments, displaying military artifacts from World War I and II, as well as weapons and other historical items related to Albania’s resistance during these conflicts.
With its rich history, strategic importance, and cultural significance, Gjirokastër Castle remains one of Albania’s most notable landmarks.
