The Ascona was well liked here in Ireland and sold quite well. A good solid car, with a bit of style. If your Dad bought one new, or nearly new, he was doing well. The Rekord of that time was a very impressive car, especially when fully optioned. What a nice channel, very entertaining, especially when you can remember the cars new.
I had a sapphire blue Ascona 1.6s GLC166T as a company car. Persuaded my boss that the standard issue cavalier wouldn’t fit my garage. Only rep in my firm with a foreign car. Such a good looking car. Twin choke carb. I added the chrome wheel rims to make it look like the Berlina. Could get 90 mph on a flat stretch of motorway. Only downside was no power steering and it needed strong arms to turn at low speed. On leaving the firm I bought the car at 2.5 years old fully serviced for £1600. Kept it as a second car for another five years before passing to my brother in law who ran it for a further five years. Loads of boot space and rear seat room for baby seats.
There are a few models missing from that brochure that maybe came later. I had a '80 V reg 2.0 SR Berlina 4 door, an '82 X reg 2.0S Auto and an '81 W reg 1.6 DL. A fantastic car.
Being from ireland I was a bit confused on why a UK channel was covering opel instead of Vauxhall .here opel is the republics version of vauxhall.good interesting video
I had a Manta B, the 2 litre injection proper one, not the 1.8 single point injection thingy. It was very quick, weighed nothing. The engine was basically a 4 cyl version of the Monza 6 in line. Cam in head, so not OHC, followers but the cam sat in the head? And was chain driven? I had to change the springs and the shocks, in 100,000 miles? What a car! I actually still have dreams about her.
I do remember the Ascona very well a mate of mine had one it was red with five spoke 13 inch alloy wheels of a similar aged Manta 4-door,4-speed manual, 1.6 engine, it was a v-reg (1979-80) he had it from 1987 to 90 I think thank's for the video😀🚗👍
Hi 👋 I'm viewing from New Zealand. We never sold Opels here in NZ in the 1980s. The reason being we assembled Australian General Motors Holdens. The Holden Torana was on our car market at the time. I like the Opel Ascona pictured, it was a nice car design.
We had a ‘79 (V) Ascona 2.0 for a while. Not bad overall, apart from a useless auto choke. Benefits of hindsight, we should have had a manual choke fitted. Stayed on far too long after a cold start, with a ridiculous idle speed and hot starting was hopeless. Coupled with it hating autumn mornings because the damp got into the distributor, we ended up walking to school regularly. Replaced by an ‘83 (A) Mazda 626 with a manual choke, which was a marked improvement all round. First car we had with what Mazda referred to as power windows and power locking. The height of luxury!
I had a 5 year old Ascona 1.6 when I was 18, a much better built car than the Cortina’s and Marinas my friends had. Also 100% reliable took us all over the UK in all weathers and never let us down once
My Father bought, through the car auction, an Ascona 1.9SR Berlina in pail blue, I have never seen or heard of one mentioned again. That was one of the best cars we had in the family; it was, and still is, referred to as "The War Horse". If I could find one I would buy it. Anyone got any information about one?
The mark 1 Cavalier never had a 2 litre engine but had a 1.9 litre instead. Perhaps the Opel badge had to be kept because Opel did not want to share their engine.
On the mainland it was also available with 1.3 petrol and 2.0 diesel engines. I prefer the design of the ascona over the cavalier. The boxy front fits perfectly with the rest of the car. There was also an entry-level version called Ascona "J".
In Norway you could get the n, S, Berlina and SR! All with either 2 or 4 doors. The SR had extra instruments, sideskirts, spoilers and sidestrips. They were pretty good liked, not at least as a second hand youngsters car.
It's REALLY STRANGE to think that the same cars were sold in the UK; SOME badged as OPEL & others; Vauxhall... I only remember TWO GM cars being sold here (Ireland) badged as Vauxhall: the Viva & the Chevette. I THINK the Chevette was ALSO sold as an OPEL (Kadett mk1?) Could be wrong about that..
It's too bad that the top of the line 2.0E engine, which made it's way to ascona B at the end of 1979 - start of 1980 wasn't sold in UK and Ireland. It was basically same as 2.0S engine,, but whith L jetronic fuel injestion and 110 HP. Supposedly it didn't fit in the RHD cars, becouse intake manifold was in the way of brake cylinder...

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. All the best.
My Dad had a 1978 Amber Gold Ascona SR Berlina.
Its the car that got me into cars as a kid...loved it.
Fabulous
We briefly had a green auto with light wipers when I was a kid.

Happy memories- thank you for sharing.

I think most cars around this time had the terrible auto choke when the manual worked far better.

After 1978 the 2 litre CIH engine was available in the Cavalier mk 1..it replaced the 1.9
I had a Chocolate Brown '81 W plate cavalier and a red '82 X plate GLS Sports Hatch both with 2.0 litre engines.

Ah, so Berlina was the luxury spec before the CD designation. 😃
i learnt to drive in a white 4 door opel ascona in 1983
