Danced to this in the 70s here in deepest Cornwall. Yes, NS reached here. indeed I and along with others were into all things Motown then Atlantic and Stax since the middle 60s. "Tightrope" anyone?
I am down by lands end and northern soul still going strong here. I lived in Cleethorpes when I first heard this fab tune at the wintergardens, happy days x
It just smacks of the Pier it will played at my funeral and when i look down from above I will know the ones that were there by the smile and a tear KTF
Aa I recall 'Elusive' was the B-side on the UK release single (well it was on my copy anyway) so that would explain why it was not a hit. I note on the demo it is the A Side
Just another classic track. We played it everywhere. Mecca/Wigan/Cleethorpes/Peterborough. I thinl mine was £1 from a lad with a pile of them at the Casino. Think Id heard it for 1st time 2 weeks b4 at Blackpool and it went down a storm. But remember it was everywhere. Even the Notts Palais dayers, Ritz/Goldmine/Purley.
first heard this at a northern soul all nighter up north ,amazing song ,changed my direction ,.suddenly i realised there was more to life than just soul music,#inouno
Severely underrated. Especially their albums with founder Alan Shacklock. Babe Ruth recorded so many catchy 3-minute songs as well as extended epics - - this is but one example. Their 2009 release "Que Pasa" managed to recapture some of what made them great.
Wow Tony, this song just came back to me after so many years being lost in my memory bank! This is pure, classic disco, that makes that era so special. Thanks for sharing bro!
Summer jams in St JOHNS park in Brooklyn New York... Our local DJ's Derrick B (RIP) Jammin T and Sonny B would mix the life out of this song...GREAT SUMMER TIME LATE 70's MEMORIES!!!!
Contempo-rock group here. and a god one at that, who's next?? Just shows the diversity of the UK Northern/rare soul scene over the years, I remember this from the Casino Oldies All-Nters...very reminiscent of Dianne Davidson - Sympathy.... another great tune, that I got to know many years later.
The UK single release was actually re recorded as Jenny Hann was signed to a different UK company/label and could not appear on the UK release hence the re-recording, This version is far superior. thanks for the post.
This was probably as commercially-accpetable as Babe Ruth got. Then Janita left... She did ad advert for BASF cassette tapes, which was later released as her solo single. Pity nothing came after that... You are still wonderful, Mrs Morris! :-)
I had a girlfriend who was the best dancer I ever saw. she was from South Emsall S. Yorkshire and her name was Karen and she was one of twins. She could kill this tune.
This song can be found on the Stealin Home Lp. You can find all of their music on the net if you look hard enough. I have everything they did plus some.
This song, "the Mexican", "Bra", "love is the message" (instrumental), where required songs to be played for the huslters. If you knew what you doing you would be the last on the dance floor (as folks conceded your skills ) and the girl ultimately became your girlfriend.
Now this is a great song and its certainly got funky guitar in there but I have always thought of it as pop/rock. My now wife and I frequented the rock nights at the Dixieland Showbar in Southport in the 70's and it was very popular there. It was on the album Stealin' Home and most of the album is rock orientated. We had friends into Northern Soul but this is not what I thought of in that genre. Brings back great memories.
If you look at the length of the single pictured (3.34min) I actually used the Album Version from "Stealin Home" - length (5.03 min) , which I believe to have Jenny Haan credited(don't have it in front of me at present......
The album version is the same as the US release on 7" with Jenny Hann on lead, however when the UK version was released Jenny Haan had left the group and due to contractual arrangements the UK 7" could not have her on the release hence the second version with an alternative lead singer who's name escapes me I'm afraid, still a brilliant record I just prefer the Album/US 45 version.
Love this song! One of very few that successfully incorporated rock guitar licks into a disco sound and beat. Great job Babe Ruth! 🎉

now we are talking Massive Cleethorpes tune, remember this getting the old floor boards bouncing to the stomping. finally getting plays again
Amazing voice and guitar
This was out about 1974 when Disco is said to of started. It was played along with dreaming a dream by Crown Heights Affair
Heard this at the Tyneside Soul Weekender on Saturday night and it blew my mind . Happy Memories

Monster tune just got to be the best funky soul out there ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Agree... was a floor filler last weekend in Doncaster...
There cant be many English Rock bands that had a smash on the Northern Scene.
Janita Haan"s voice makes this record..KTF.
Saw these at Southport in Feb 77( ?) great band. This song is still one of my all time favourites..great guitar too, brings back great memories! Oz
Rock with Soul, Brilliant.

Wow. Wicked groove for a bunch of Home Counties Brits :-)

Ellie Hope or Jenny Haan - wot a song !!!
After Babe Ruth she was lead singer with Liquid Gold (who had a hit with Dance Yourself Dizzy)
@@SoulStrutter Loved that too !!
Wow still brilliant to this day great voice....A1

A BIG CASINO HIT!!!!!!
Remember this so well at the Casino...top tune...
this version is far superior to the Stealin' Home version i grew up with .. "Fascination" was another killer track from the lp 🙂
NO ME CANSO DE ESCUCHARLO !!!! ERA EL HIMNO DE LA DISCO !!!!

I want firestarter at my funeral
This is wonderful stuff...how would you classify this? Disco Rock or something? whatever the case it's very driving.....

Thanks a lot. Do you have Fascination? Another great song from that album.
THE CHURCH
Never in this world is this Northern soul.
Gr8t and was played at all nighters !!! (How I heard it )
I liked this as a rock record in 75 or was it 76, didn't know it was a Northern Soul fav until about 5 years ago.
Of course it is
Damn, Hollywood club in New York City
Alan Shackford was a great guitarist
One of the greats. Fantastic music to dance to at Wigan Casino back in the day.
Should have mentioned , Pic shows single , but song is Album Version... :-)
Sounds a little like The Glitter Band "Makes you blind".
The UK and US 45 versions were different, Jenny Hann was only on the US issued 45 not on the UK which is horribly inferior.
If you look at the length of the single pictured (3.34min) I actually used the Album Version from "Stealin Home" - length (5.03 min) , which I believe to have Jenny Haan credited(don't have it in front of me at present......

It was Ellie someone
well done that man :)
Ellie Hope , I also agree US version better ,
Try dancin' shit hot!!
@joecc6 i would say funk rock
did Alan Shackford ever record any solo albums ??
I don't think Shacklock's ever gone solo.
Was this a macca sound?
the palace rhyl great glider queens/palace 78 ------84 ktf
joe conner id say jazz funk soul equqlly as good@ ritz or shoemakers soul nights rhyl k.t.f
@joecc6
Definitely not a quintessential norther souler, say in the vein of Judy st 'what' ? i'm not an expert though!
Depends where you frequented .... massive at Cleethorpes Pier ..... quintessential there mate!
@@splodgehallcroft3068 bounced Cleethorpes pier into the sand to this track in the mid 70s... Brilliant tune
Prefer the Ellie Hope vocal suprisingly
Nice tune but this was and never wil lnever be Northern Soul.
A Huge part of me would agree with you apart from the fact that the 1st time I heard "elusive " was at a 70's Northernevent LOL !!
Go Figure !!
@GasMaskHeadhunter wtf are u talikng about?
