  • The right and wrong way to do the Charleston.
Phyllis Haylor and Alec Millar demonstrate the Charleston. They are holders of the World's Ballroom Championship (mixed) in 1925 and World's Tango Championship 1924.
"Few dances have aroused so much controversy as the Charleston. It has been both condemned and praised but, like most dances, depends on its exponents. Clumsy dancers will make a clumsy dance. For example -"
A group of bright young things stand around and watch a couple do an ungainly version of the Charleston. Another version is shown - presumably the proper way to do the Charleston but it seems like there is an intertitle missing. C/U of the feet to show the appropriate steps. L/S of the couple dancing. When they have finished their demonstration they bow to the camera and the spectators applaud.
Two safety prints exist - check for best quality.

Watching this without music, I ended up reflecting on the fact that they're all dead. It's a sinister feeling. The dance itself is interesting, though. I think that Charleston is the mother of all "dance crazes" that came later.

Prefer the first 'clumsy' couple dancing the Charleston because they looked as if they were enjoying themselves! Same couple dancing it properly made Charleston look boring !!

There is no "proper" Charleston is a street dance, there are only guidelines.

The first couple is by far superior dancing the Charleston compared to the second couple, who didn't look like they were really doing the Charleston at all, but being stiff and extra cautious not to misstep and step on each others' feet.

There were many wealthy blacks in the 1920s. Don't let the propaganda blind you to actual history.

This song epitomizes what people today want to think the 1920s was like. The truth is that this song and dance was a minor craze in 1925 and was viewed by the majority of people as an amusing novelty at best and vulgar and low class at worst. Most people preferred waltzes and fox-trots. If you want to hear what normal 1920s music sounded like listen to the Colonial Club Orchestra, Regent Club Orchestra on the Brunswick label or The Troubadours or Nat Shilkret on Victor. The real 1920s sound was romantic, heavy on strings with vocals by tenors but I know that isn't what people today want to hear.... since they are obsessed with hot jazz and race music and then project their preferences on the past.
