Oh 1000% Kung Fury. I was trying to think of one and this is it. Also kinda in that same ball park: Kung Fu Hustle. Definitely more earnest but still goofy and great.
I feel like Ben is like Stu from What we do in the Shadows. The non-vampire who just is flat mates with all of the vampires and just kind of hangs out with them.
My favorite bad movie of all time has to be the live action Sorcerer’s Apprentice (the one with Nick Cage). It is insanely quotable, and it has one un-ironically great scene.
I unironically love that movie. I see that it’s not good, but I always have a fun time watching it, and I love that guy who voices Hiccup in the show to Train Your Dragon movies as well.
Watching equilibrium as a teenager IN the theater was transforming. Especially the action scene in the dark. He used the sound of their voices to pick up their location. It wasn’t dumb it was awesome!
31:30 Ok, Hear me Out. Here are 10 things you could hire Ben (and maybe a webdev too, I dont know Bens skillset) to do 1. Blaseball (this is spelled correctly, look it up), BUT its Wayne Rules Noseball, maybe toss in occasional other invested persons like a Radient 2. A new Wiki backend that allows for users to pick a selection of books and filterers the content on the wiki to only contain spoilers for those books (I have a full spec, but its too large for the comments) 3. Manage an academia journal about the cosmere that people can send papers too. 4. You mentioned Dragonsteal doesnt yet have the Infrastructure to distribute audio books directly. Sounds like a job for Ben 5. Design the spec for the Awakened, Dor, Harmonium, and Fabrial computers down to the "transistor" level. 6. Build a Cosmere E-reader app where you can buy each premium E-book, and the app contains footnotes and links between the books where there are crossovers (IE, zihel says something about colors, and there is a footnote that colors is a common Nalthian swear), or nightblood has a bio page. maybe add a tree of questions, so you can select zihel and ask "is he vasher" and that will then link both names to the same bio page. 7. The Rithmatist Battle Arena VR/Tablet game 8. Death Stranding, Cosmere Edition (ie, post apocalyptic package carrier running across the shattered planes) 9. The Cosmere Battle Royal game, find beads of Lerasium and say the words to bond the spren. 10. The Whitesand interactive E graphic novel app
God's of Egypt is easily my favourite bad movie, I've never laughed so hard in a cinema. Once you read up on some of the behind the scenes stuff it gets even better. Highly recommend.
I'm gonna second that. There are few things that get a kick out of me like transformers gods. Though I will put the caveat that part of my enjoyment is due to my familiarity with actual Egyptian mythology and seeing them mess it up, so If you don't know that actual myths behind it, it might be less enjoyable.
Eyes on Breen! What a time to be alive having Brandon evangelizing Neil Been movies. Oh, also, go watch Miami Connection. Though our enjoyment of it may be somewhat colored by living in Central Florida, where some of our audience were old enough to remember commercials for YK Kim's martial arts schools, and everyone else just had fun spotting all the Central Florida locations.
#EyesOnBreen And oh my god when he puts the powder in the lake (or any other crazy stuff), it's amazing the man hasn't gotten a visit from Honeland Security or something.
For bad films I really love The Happening, Shyamalan's 2008 film. It works on several levels for me: pure camp, sincere and interesting, and actually just entertaining. There's no doubt the actors are in one movie while Shyamalan might be holding in a laugh the whole time.
My favorite bad movie is Zoom: Academy for Superheroes. It's Tim Allen and some kids genuinely thinking they'll really start a franchise. It's PG so it'll definitely be appropriate for anyone to watch.
Five months late, but I liked The Munchies from 1987. It's about these small-gnome sized aliens that come to take over earth. I remember laughing so hard when I saw it as a kid.
I could suggest several hilariously bad movies, most of which are 80s action movies (shout out to Roadhouse, the first bad movie I watched on purpose). But today I will focus on one recommendation: Love on a Leash. Love on a Leash is a romantic comedy about a woman who adopts a stray dog with a secret- every night, the dog transforms into a man. Without spoiling too much, here are some features of the movie: - Easy Access. It can be watched, in its entirety, on RUclips. Or Prime Video, if you prefer. - No score. There is no music, no background sound, just recorded dialogue. When the movie starts playing, you may experience a brief moment of panic and wonder if your speakers are broken. They're not (probably). The movie begins in complete silence. - Speaking of the dialogue, it's awful. - Inexplicable direction. Shots where the focal character(s) are not fully in the frame or are in complete darkness, bizarre camera angles, and plenty of other things that would probably get you expelled from film school. - A lot of green. Specifically, pale lime green. - An unpredictable ending.
when the world yoyo contest was held in Orlando every year, they used to screen Yoyo Girl Cop the night before the contest. I still need to watch it one of these days
Love on a Leash should not be missed. Also, James Nguyen, that Vietnamese genius who did Birdemic: Shock and Terror also did Julie and Jack, a modern take on Hitchcock's Vertigo, complete with all the computer jargon that the Nguyen loves.
My Favourite bad movie is Upside Down. It presents itself as this dramatic science fiction love story in this fictional world with unique world building rules, and it fails at every step, completely unintentionally.
You guys have to watch "The VelociPastor" Its about a catholic priest that turns into a Velociraptor. It is working a bit hard at sometimes but it is golden!
Hey Brandon and Dan, if Equilibrium is Brandon's choices but Dan wants to watch more Japanese movies I would recommend "Returner" as a great fun movie. It's similar to Equilibrium as a movie trying to be the next Matrix but also has bizarre yet fun Japanese sensibilities. The Villain of the movie and the ending has been a favorite of mine since College.
Neil breen is amazing! My friends and I used to have bad movie night once a week. We would all bring a bad movie and then watch them all day. Its so good that you do the same thing 😁
Troll 3: quest for the mighty sword is phenomenal. There are botched lines that made it into the final cut, hilarious action scenes, a guy who is cast both as his father and son and costuming that is just the chefs kiss of dumb.
Listening to this I kept thinking you all need to see "Six String Samurai". Great in so many ways and terrible in so many more. I dont know how to sell beyond the title so just a little: premise is USSR nuked the US in the 50s and Elvis became king of the remains, he has died and now hopeful musicians and traveling for tournament to become new king. Music is really genuinely great. Quotable lines: Lines of dialogue is the highest I ever seen. The lead actor's every other actoring rolls are Thug #3 or similar in Hong Kong action movies.
One of my recent excellent bad movie experiences was Ad Astra. I'm not going to spoil (much, I hope), but the things that movie is blessed with and the formidable way it squanders all of it is nothing short of amazing.
Velocipastor is my favorite bad movie! you guys should check it out! Llamageddon, Samurai Cop, Suburban Sasquatch, and Alien vs Hunter are a few others that are absolutely awesome
I loved all the old Ray Harryhausen model-animated movies like Jason and the Argonauts and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. I haven't seen them recently. I wonder if I can track down copies.
The best example of a media that's deliberately bad yet completely hilarious and doesn't feel like it's trying too hard is "Garth Marenghis Darkplace". Absolutely hilarious English comedy and I wish there was a way I could get Dan and Brandon to watch it
Okay, bad movie suggestion: Battleship with Taylor Kitsch. It is astonishingly bad but in a “can’t turn your eyes away from it” kinda way. The thing is, it’s terribly earnest and you can tell everyone thought they were making that year’s big blockbuster action movie. By the end they’re really trying to skate on WWII nostalgia. It’s so big and dumb and I love it so much. It’s rather long, but I still adore it. I think about the burrito scene from the beginning far too frequently. I find it genuinely hilarious. Also, this movie somehow has Liam Neeson and Rihanna in it. And yes, they DO play a game of Battleship.
Stay Tuned! I forgot about that movie. I need to rewatch it. It's more in the vein of Airplane than Sharknado, so I don't think it's really a bad movie, but it's a lot of fun.
On bad movies, Abraham Lincoln Vs. Zombies is great. It is the B horror vs of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. However I feel Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies is better, it is also fun seeing a 150,000 dollar movie better then a 70 million dollar movie.
The funny thing about Salt is that although all the double-agent-conspiracy stuff seems unrealistic, only weeks after the movie was released the CIA caught an actual ring of Russian spies with a setup almost identical to the movie's plot
I watched any of those 80s movies whenever they were on. We were not spoiled for choice and I took any fantasy movie they would give me. I can't believe we've gotten to the point where there are so many choices in fantasy that I don't watch many shows with a decent budget. Can't believe in a good way.
The best part about Yo-yo Girl Cop is the fact that it’s an ongoing series in Japan based on a manga with movies and tv shows, which I guess inspired or created a mini genre about high school girls fighting crime in Japanese media for a while. Good stuff.
Priest (with Paul Bettany, Karl Urban, Maggie Q, Christopher Plummer) is my favorite "bad movie". Lots of quality names in the actors, and the movie takes itself very seriously, but it is a hoot to watch. There is an anime-style intro to the movie where there is some gore, but other than that it has a standard amount of violence/blood for a PG-13 movie. My favorite thing about the movie is that the script, the actors, the dialogue is all serious and supposed to be grimdark, but they just don't quite pull it off, and it cracks me up to no end. Highly recommend.
This is an intereting first experience with this podcast. Was thinking, ooooo Brandon Sanderson, what are gonna talk about? An inspiration for an old novel, the pencil or pen.he used to write in his notepad on his first book. Nope. Yoyo Girl Cop. I now know thats a thing. On the plus side, I have a new movie to watch with my wife that will make her question why she married me, so that will be fun
Any early 2000s spy movie like The Pacifier and The Spy Next Door are cringey but I loved them as a kid and I love them now cuz I can see how bad they are.
Official request: Dan analyzing a bad movie at DS Con 2023. Watching him analyze a 2 hour movie (Crazy Rich Asians) for 4 hours was one of the highlights of DS Con 2022 for me. I can only imagine how much fun a bad movie would be.
I spent the entire podcast thinking that Brandon’s favorite bad move was the animated movie Trolls 2: World Tour and then a few days later I remember there was another Troll movie and he was referring to Troll 2 instead 😂.
“Unicorn City” is a bad movie that is so bad it’s good. I would love to hear Brandon and Dan talk about this one, would make my Wednesday! The other movie I thought of immediately when they talk about bad movies we love is the one Dan already has plans for, “Mom and Dad Save the World.” John Lovitz for the win.
I have a bad movie recommendation. But first I just want to say thank you to this podcast. I am a stay at home mom to a 3 year old girl and you guys are sometimes the best adult interaction I get in a day. 😂 no further comment needed on that. My movie recommendation that you could definitely show your company is called a Borrowed Christmas. It doesn’t have any fancy special effects or anything like that. It is just a movie full of terrible story, script, and acting. Basic storyline premise is a middle-aged single and very wealthy man decides he wants to live out his G-rated fetish/fantasy of the man of the house during Christmas. A real “Charles Dickens” kind of Christmas. Seeing he has no family he decides to rent all of the things needed for this christmas- including a wife and children. It truly is the WORST movie I have ever watched and I almost turned it off so many times but I just kept hoping there would be a redemptive point. There wasn’t. There is no bad movie payoff here- except getting to the end and sitting there realizing that was a truly terrible movie. PS- wait til you learn about the borrowed orphans.
The best part about Googling "suitcase full of meat" is that you will learn of not one, but *two* cases in which the term is applicable. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
"Bad" movie recs: Firstly "The Guyver" and its weird semi-sequel "Black Mask 2: City of Masks". Then of course, the very best of the Full Moon Pictures flicks: "Meridian".
one of the greatest wtf movies I know is "hectic knife". not sure if it's ok to watch with the company though. there's not much gore but it is a bit overly surreal at times.
Priest gets my recommendation. There's so much goodness in it between the world building, the effects, and the action scenes, and it manages to be a campy monstrosity of a movie anyway. Not sure how violent / gory it is, though -- my personal threshold is high enough that I don't register these kinds of things unless they're particularly severe.
I am going to recommend the 1989 sci-fi film Arena, rated PG-13. Its Wikipedia entry has a good synopsis, if you're interested. It has that so-bad-it's-good feel, and it's one of my favorites.
The Lost skeleton of Cadavra, I didn't check spelling but this was a major part of my youth and we all learned the rock dance and the importance of sharing atmosphere-ium so people don't have to marry skeletons
For whatever reason, I actually had a great time with God’s of Egypt 😂 Gerald Butler was a surprisingly fun villain, and it was great to see Nikolaj Coster-Waldau outside of GoT.
In the Sword & Sorcery genre, I would recommend Hawk the Slayer. In addition to its hilarious badness, it has the feel of a homebrewed Dungeon & Dragons campaign run by an uninspired Dungeon Master. Another film that might be a bit too graphic in terms of violence and nudity for your company, but is still a funny-bad film, is The Sword and the Sorcerer, starring Lee Horsley. It obviously had a higher budget than Hawk the Slayer, but is still entertainingly inept.
that slow mo bad framerate thing is so prevalent in the lord of the rings trilogy. I never noticed it as a kid, but now every time I watch the movies, I can't stop laughing.
Yeah, they should really address that in some new release. I don't even need the CG touched up for the most part, but the bad slow-mo is so distracting.
My recommendation is a movie called 100% Wolf. It's an animated kids movie about werewolves with one of the wildest premises I've ever seen that takes itself completely seriously despite every second being completely ridiculous.
The Salute of the Jugger with Rutger Hauer is my favorite bad movie. Its a mix of Rise of the Titans and Gladiator set in a Mad Max world, I highly recommend it.
Oh I love bad movies, I’ve been doing a bad move club for some time now and I would have to say my top three are: After the Ball, Blood and Chocolate, and Red Snow.
A bad movie I like is Nuigulumar Z. It is incredibly strange. It's both a magical girl movie and a zombie movie, but it's not very gory. It also has a lovely wholesome theme about following your dreams coupled with the most questionable combat strategies I've seen in a movie. Also, sentient teddy bears. I recommend it if you're in the mood to have your brain melted a bit.
There's a movie called The Drawer (at least I think) it's been a long time, but it was bad and bizarre but wonderful and weird. A man appears inside a morgue drawer and it let's him go back in time, and he keeps ending up there and doesn't know why. I only saw it once and have never found it again. If you do manage to find it, you must watch it.
I submit for your bad movie consideration: ---Hudson Hawk. It is a truly bizarre heist movie and one of Bruce Willis's worst-review movies ever. Like your Ninja 3 experience, it was my introduction to the idea of movie-so-amazingly-bad-it's enjoyable. It did help that I watched it in a hotel room in Paris across the street from Louvre and it was dubbed in German (which I do not understand) and subtitled in French (of which I only understand the basics). It was a wild and wonderful ride.
If you love a movie how can it possibly be bad? I absolutley love Equalibrium. I mean it is 1984, Farenheit 451, and Matrix combined, what more distopian vision could a person with for. I tried to think of a bad movie that I have enjoyed, but if I enjoyed a movie I find that I can't view it as bad. Maybe the Trinity series with Terance Hill? Best lighthearted westerns I have ever seen, but definitely a low brow spaggetti western.
As you are looking for bad movie recommendations I strongly recommend The Apple, Knowing and the 2018 Robin Hood. For the reasons you talked about specifically I very strongly recommend Romeo and Juliet: Sealed with a Kiss it is an incredibly sincere and well made movie that is entirely baffling and confusing.
Equilibrium reminds me a lot of the Giver, but intended as an action movie instead of having the movie adaptation of a book force in some out-of-place action.
Gods of Egypt would have been a great movie if only it was any good. For other bad movies, Jupiter Ascending is a must, a true master piece of bad movies. Bright is another one, the live action G.I. Joe movies, and the Kingsman series which might not count as bad but certainly make very interesting choices.
In a past episode Dan promised to watch Kung Fury. This is important. Dan needs to watch Kung Fury.
Oh 1000% Kung Fury. I was trying to think of one and this is it.
Also kinda in that same ball park: Kung Fu Hustle. Definitely more earnest but still goofy and great.
Kung fury is a ridiculous masterpiece
I was also thinking the same thing.
No he needs to watch every episode of one piece
@@reginaldforthright805 oh gosh no. That would take up too much writing time or too my family time. Either way, it breaks Brandon.
I feel like Ben is like Stu from What we do in the Shadows. The non-vampire who just is flat mates with all of the vampires and just kind of hangs out with them.
This is an entirely appropriate comparison.
The magic in that movie was great, and I loved the scene with the song. Honestly underatted actor too.
Talking about Nick Cage and bad movies, I thought his "Jiu Jitsu" movie was fun for how bad it was.
I’m curious which scene you liked the most, from that description
Watching equilibrium as a teenager IN the theater was transforming. Especially the action scene in the dark. He used the sound of their voices to pick up their location. It wasn’t dumb it was awesome!

“The man who killed Hitler, and Bigfoot” is the funniest bad movie that takes itself so seriously… love it

I have not seen this since I was a child but Surf Ninjas had a special place in the bad movie realm for me.
The Japanese movie with chainsaw girl you are looking for is The Machine Girl from 2008
I have a bad movie recommendation.
I SAID DON’T DO IT
"Bad" movie recs: Firstly "The Guyver" and its weird semi-sequel "Black Mask 2: City of Masks". Then of course, the very best of the Full Moon Pictures flicks: "Meridian".
one of the greatest wtf movies I know is "hectic knife". not sure if it's ok to watch with the company though. there's not much gore but it is a bit overly surreal at times.
The old mortal combat movie is a classic!
"we don't need Ben to ..manage..fix stuff"
*network goes down*
"beeeeeeeeennnn halp"
Looking forward to the suitcase full of meat.
Funny unknown movie is HIGH STRUNG (1991) with Steve Odekerk, Fred Willard, Thomas Wilson and an uncredited Jim Carry. I owned the VHS in high school.
13:35 It looks like Brandon accidentally picked up two pages and only signed one
Dan should watch Garzey's Wing. Let's put this gem on his radar
In the vein of 80’s B movies, I’d recommend “Hawk the Slayer”
Totally agree. Hawk the Slayer with Jack Palance as the villain is the best of the 80s Fantasy movies.
that slow mo bad framerate thing is so prevalent in the lord of the rings trilogy. I never noticed it as a kid, but now every time I watch the movies, I can't stop laughing.
Yeah, they should really address that in some new release. I don't even need the CG touched up for the most part, but the bad slow-mo is so distracting.
My favorite dumb movie is Better Off Dead. It is old enough that a lot of people haven’t seen it or if they have they don’t remember how funny it is.
Never thought I'd hear Brandon say "it was just for the LOL's"

Oh I love bad movies, I’ve been doing a bad move club for some time now and I would have to say my top three are: After the Ball, Blood and Chocolate, and Red Snow.
Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is absolutely amazing!
If you haven't seen it I would recommend "Split Second" With Rutger Hauer. It's on Amazon Prime. Loved this movie growing up.
Time Bandits? Not sure if that one got mentioned as I am JUST discovering this podcast..,which is fantastic btw!
The Velocipastor was intentionally bad and very, very successful. I recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it.
There is a lot of violence but it is VERY low budget and doesnt shock or get gory. It’s all for fun. Maybe still not the thing for a company.
Came to the comments to suggest this movie. My favorite good “bad” movie.
I *love* that Brandon loves Neil Breen movies! I found out about them from Kurtis Conner's channel, and they really are something else 😭💀
One of my favorite bad movies is JSA: World War II. It’s the epitome of goofy, tropey super hero animated movies and it’s wonderful.
Drgonball Evolution, The Last Airbender, and Leprechaun: In Da Hood have to be my votes for bad movies you need to see at least once.
Gods of Egypt is so funny. They made so many bad choices that I can't help but admire it
Velocipastor, Fist of Jesus, and Demons at the Door are my favorite terrible fun movies of all time
A bad movie I like is Nuigulumar Z.
Renee company in equilibrium is genuinely one of the greatest scenes in film. And then everything else happens…😂
A food heist tease is so not fair. 😂
My bad movie recommendation features two teens fighting off evil bratwursts: Yoga Hosers, starring Johnny Depp, Kevin Smith, Justin Long, and more.
Any of the Tremors movies!!! I love the first one.
I wanna have a movie night with Sando and watch Velocipastor!
Ice Pirates is an amazing bad film. Has a young Ron Pearlman and pure 80s sci Fi aesthetic.
The idea actually reminded me a lot of Fahrenheit 451. Just with bullets instead of flamethrowers
Love love equilibrium
i was holding my breath to see if brandon was going to shit on equilibrium, because its such an awesome movie
I know this episode is about bad movies, but Andor is actually really good and if Brandon is in the mood for an amazing TV give Andor a shot
