    One thing I see is that a lot of people treat the new motors like the old ones, plugged emissions canisters soon after. The ones that I see working, run them hard, and start the APU before shutting down the main engine. If you have high idle times in your daily operation, yes, I do not see how you could ever run the new emissions motors. They are not meant to be idled longer than to cool down.
    Best wishes all.

  • @acd1202
    @acd1202 3 года назад +5

    I find these videos fascinating, the difference between operating experiences in the US with European specifically UK in my case is amazing. Yes when emissions first arrived there were plenty of problems but that's all history now since about 16/17, and that you're getting better fuel from a N14 than a MX13 is frankly mind blowing, over here I would expect the difference to be at least 50% in favour of the MX13 although to be fair the MX is the most troublesome modern engine but that's camshaft related not emissions. I remember Commercial Motor magazine over here many years ago saying that the main problem with the 14 litre Cummins is that the original owner never benefits from it's longevity because the fuel usage broke him long before he got the benefit.
    The question is what is the difference between Euro 6 and EPA the makes these differences because excepting the X15 which isn't sold here, all the other engines are basically the same except for the different emission standards and the European tendancy to get more power out of a block than in North America.
    Oh and enough of this talk of 50% residual at 5 years old, try half that, we do well to get 50% at three years old, always been that way, although they are a bit cheaper to start with, as long as it isn't a Scania V8.

      The saying is that your going to pay payments or repairs, most guys figure they can make more money if the truck keeps moving so payments and a new truck is awesome, until you have payments and down time and repair bills all at once, who pays for that, you have to be committed to driving the new truck cause payment never stop, and you know repairs are on there way, you have to make money to keep the truck running, or step back a little, drive a old truck that's paid off, has some repairs but mostly cheap, and put the money where it belongs into your pocket and pay your house off, get ahead in life, you don't work for that truck, it works for you, treat it that way

    The DPF filter should be automatically bypassed whenever the truck is on the open road, known by GPS location and mph. High concentrations of diesel particulates are somewhat a health problem in congested traffic, but on the open highway there is more natural dust than diesel soot. Thank you for putting this video out. I watched the ET video also and couldn't agree with you more. Application for the truck is key. Arctic climates in remote areas with emission truck engines is a disaster, and dangerous. The amount of problems that we have had in the heavy equipment world with emission engines has been outrageous. Down time due to parked regens in the beginning, learning curves for both the operator and mechanic to prevent the final stage lock-out for regen requiring the dealer to come out and unlock the machine and force a regen, emission component failure and diagnosis time involved in figuring it out, DEF issues, etc...etc... JH Diesel and 4x4 who is being attacked by the EPA put out a video the other day breaking down the actual numbers for diesel vehicles, and he thinks its less that 3% of all on highway vehicles are diesel. All this nonsense and political terrorism by the EPA for a tiny fraction of engines being used. Thanks again. Keep up the good work.

Mack engines and rears for the most part, with a mix of Mack and Fuller transmissions. 80,000 was the typical gross weight going into the US, return loads a mix of light (roof insulation, empty shipping containers) and heavier (lumber, and back then crushed cars were allowed on open flatbeds)

  • @charlesstevenson5141
    @charlesstevenson5141 3 года назад +1

    As Curtis Noble stated, it's all about how the trucks are spec'ed. Kinda hard to compare a tractor and a dump truck from two different manufacturers, ages, different engines, one with permanent box vs one that can run bob tail and has a oversized cab protector on the box which acts like a dam thus increasing drag dramatically. One is geared for highway use, the other for off road use. All these inputs will make a huge difference in overall fuel mileage.
    Unfortunately as much as I hate to say it but eventually just like Elogs, we will all be forced over to emissions compliant trucks just as California did. It's inevitable. Fitzgerald and the other glider companies are no longer making gliders with pre emissions engines so once they are gone, they are gone. It's either except it or close up shop. I'm a huge fan of the 60 series but I've not had any trouble thus far with the DD15. Good fuel mileage (OTR), no emissions issues but one thing I have noticed with the guys having problems with the emissions systems is idling to much. I rarely idle at all and don't run in constant stop and go traffic so the system stays clean. You'll just have to make it work and adjust for the newer trucks. Work smarter, not harder.

    I think you're straight Hood with no salt trucks will hold their resale value better than other run-of-the-mill nose-down fleet trucks.
    Yah, you can get fleet 2011s-13s Volvo's & Freightliners for about $21,000 out the door at truck sales lots all day long and six ways to Sunday. I know damn well these trucks cost six figures when they were new. So you are correct that they lose almost 80% of their value within a decade.
    I'm not counting Kaiser Transport fleet trucks cuz their fleet trucks are straight Hood Peterbilt 389s

    Greetings from the Ohio Porters. Wonderful topic! I know a guy who bought 6 new rigs in 2014(I believe). All of them spent a good deal of time in the shop for emission issues, except one was sabotaged by an employee who used sugar in the fuel. When the warranties ran out, the owner bought older trucks with Detroit engines and took those engines out and placed them into the newer trucks. He is making more money now and has had FEWER issues than ever. Did he do the right thing…he thinks so. They spend a lot less time in the shop now and they do get fixed when they are in there. He bought a few more old trucks to have the engines as backups even. You have to have a reliable truck! Bottom line! Now all the pre emission trucks are all bought up and can’t be made any longer. The new Fitzgerald trucks are just glorified dealerships now. Everyone likes to have a new rig, but you do spend so much on them. You can’t buy one now with a Cat engine in it, I believe. You pretty much have to take your older trucks, rebuild them to your specs and then keep on using them until the new ones are built like they should be. I love old iron and think more of them! I don’t like Volvos at all! There are too many cookie cutter trucks out there! Thanks for sharing! 🇺🇸😎🥰🤩

    This new emission stuff is depressing. It is hard to justify spending the amount of money on a truck if you cannot make enough to pay for it to run down the road it almost seems they engineer the equipment to last long enough for you to make a little bit of money. I wonder if it is on purpose? I remember the older trucks they were not built to the tolerances that they could in the 90s and 2000s where the trucks were expected to run a million miles and done it with the right Driver. The first truck I ever drove had over a million once I showed the boss I could take care of one. He bought me and almost new one and I put several hundred thousand on it. That was a few years ago. I know this if the bosses are not making money the employees aren’t either. Companies like yours and the the other thousands out is what keep the country going. Keep going!!!!!

    One of the best way I got good fuel consumption was to use the/a boost gage. Each day is different of what the boost gage shows when holding the pedal to the rug depending on weather conditions (air density). [For lack of better numbers] Ok today it shows 30psi when i go full pedal in a pull. Now I know what maximum boost is, I would regulate my lead-foot by running 2 pounds less of full boost. IF today shows 30psi boost, THEN I never let push throttle past 28psi and select a gear in the hill that allowed me 2psi less. The 3406 B&E engines I ran, I could get decent fuel consumption. in 550miles of Lake Superior hilly highway [Nipigon to Sudbury] I could save $160 fuel by being 2 psi out of full boost.

    Keep in mind that it's not just new trucks. Everything made today from trucks, to cars, to cell phones, EVERYTHING is built to fail in a few years so you have to replace them. Around 10 years ago Apple couldn't get people to buy their new very expensive I-phones. So what they did was to stop updating the old ones, and slowing down the speed at which they could surf the web. In essence they were forcing people to buy new phones and they got caught, but nothing changed. Now they and all cell phone makers manufacture them so you can't even replace the batteries which on average last 3 years. The same is true for emission trucks. I own a 2019 T680 and fully expect I'll need to replace it no later than 2023. I live in California, so no gliders available for us out here.

    My dad owns a 2011 Cascadia with a DD-15 and knock on wood, even with just over 1m miles, he's never had to do any major engine work to it. I think it's just a lucky truck or something though. My uncles have had similar trucks with DD-15s and get problem after problem. The reality is that pre-emission trucks are just always gonna be more reliable. The only "nice" thing with the newer trucks is that assuming they're working, the computers and sensors do a good job of leading you to the issue if the truck does have a problem.

Been in my new 2022 389 with same rears 18 speed with 500 performance Cummins. I’m at 6.1 pushing a cigar box compared to a aerodynamic truck. I had no issues after 450k with emissions. Older passive regen trucks have more sensors and larger filters. Sometimes it’s drivers who don’t pay the bills and don’t care if they idol the truck when it’s not needed. Flint Creek runs heavy and off road and has legitimate complaints on trucks that are not made for that. All I can say is I’d love to have my old 84 Ford but you just can’t buy em

    To save time , bad weather and foot leather, invest in a golf cart to ride around the business.
    As much as I love PACCAR products, those emissions engines with tons of sensors and plastic everywhere are a headache for small trucking companies and you can't personalize aerodynamic rigs; in addition glued trucks cannot stand up to the rigors of REAL trucking.
    My cousin used to work for a Volvo dealer and there's so much electronics in it you might mistakenly short out something. If you go by an independent truck repair shop, what truck sits there the most? Volvo. Western Star- uses quite a few Freightliner parts since they're owned by Diamler.
