Good review mate, very balanced. I still think that windows phones offer the best mix of speed, stability and personalization when compared to android or ios. I think that anyone that does not care about games or fad apps (most adults, especially professionals) should definitely choose a windows phone unless they are already too locked into another ecosystem. I should be getting my 950 XL in a couple of days and I can't wait.
My 950XL is epic! Love it to bits! As for battery life it just seems to get better!! I've gone nearly two days before charging it...and that's with all the apps running constantly updating. Best thing though is just plugging it into my PC (you don't even have enter your pin) pressing file explorer and bingo..you can drag and drop files, music, pictures, files etc in and out of the phone. I have mine set up to sink with new pictures and downloads & I have One drive setup as a tile in my pictures folder so I don't use up much memory. The glass front is great. NO FINGER PRINTS!!! It's light but has the required heft for you to feel that it's something special. The camera & video recording function just works how you hope it should. It's a phone I will keep for years to come. There are new updates all the time and they work. It's a future proofed smart phone. Windows eleven & twelve are just a download away in the future with all the new features that they will bring. One last note. Being able to personalise the tile pictures is great. I have mine set to be completely clear with a background picture of my choice. I have owned all the previous windows phones and this one is truly massive jump over all of them.
That was really well done, thanks for doing...I'm a three year 920 user, but I just got the 640 for $30 and so I'll wait a while for Windows 10 mobile to get up to speed and the price to drop a bit before buying the 950lx.
+jonah travisano Cheers Jonah :) I get the impression prices will drop fairly quickly. Not because they're bad phones or anything but because I think budget/mid-range Windows Phones are a far bigger market than high-end flagships so i would anticipate the sales of the 950 not being 'great', and as such we may see prices fall.
+The Tech Chap TV You can adjust that brightness to the level that Auto brings it to. Go to extras, then click display and click adjust brightness and you will see that the "high" setting isn't all the way up.
I really love the UI of windows phone. it's not perfect and needs a lot of improvement. if the app gap wasn't that big I definitely would have purchased this phone.
I have a Lumia 640 for a year and a half (had an Iphone 4s before for 1 year). The main complain I have is the lack of apps. For example, you no longer have the RUclips app. The thing I like most are the live tiles wich make the windows phone so original!
Great review friend, I'm loving your videos, I really wasn't a Windows phone's fan,I just bought it because I saw your review, and I ended up loving my Lumia 950XL, it's been a great companion since then to get my work done,I work in an office, true it doesn't have as many apps like android and ios but it got what I need, but enough or that, what I want to say is thank you so much, you're doing a great job.
Great vid! I would like to state this though... Living images have been out way before the iPhone's Live Photos. Lumia devices had that feature about two years ago.
Great video, personally the app gap is not a big issue for me and I found all the apps I used on android, migrated from Lenovo a6000 to Lumia 730 great looking phone with excellent build quality
+mohit khubchandani Thanks a lot :) Sure well of course everyone use is a bit different but it's good to see people such as yourself have found everything they need on the Windows Store.
Since it was marketed to be a phone used for office editing and working in general, I hoped you would have discussed more on that because I really wanted a working phone. But besides that, fantastic review! Keep up this good work!
950 & 950XL are indeed the best Windows phone ever, because in 2018 Microsoft announced the end of the road for the Windows Phone platform. These are the last Windows flagship phones. Came out in 2015, started going for half price by end of 2016 and Microsoft published the obituary in 2018. I own a 950XL and yes, it gets very hot even when watching RUclips.
I agree - after taking part in an on-going windows phone developers course and seeing how powerful and free the Visual Studio community suite is, and finding the tiled interface really impressive sharp and sweet; I am slowly being won over from Android as a result . However there are issue that needs sorting out with windows phones and it is responsiveness and maintaining a high level of performance; at the minute Android has been unparalleled in response, speed and regular updates that seem to bring the best of the hardware.
Any chance you could give another look into 950(xl) performance with the latest W10 builds, so we could see how much improvement (if any) has been done since their release? Keep up the good work!
Now it's 2020, and I still have my Lumia 950 XL that I bought back in October 2018. It just need a new screen and a new rear camera module, that's it. Everything else works brilliantly well. Even app gap is not my concern since I have all the essential daily app installed in the phone.
Those apps you cannot get you can get through the Edge browser and then set up a tile for it. I use a Lumia 640 and love it. Got it for £15 and it does everything I want except Instagram which quite honestly I don't need. Google maps, RUclips through Edge browser. What is there not to like? I have also a Lumia 950 without a SIM and use for the great camera functions.
Great review - thanks for posting!! I was looking for recent reviews to see if the Lumia 950's software has improved since launch. My Lumia 735 is running W10 and has improved massively in the last few weeks to today; March 11th - it is now silky smooth and fast. I was assuming the 950 would be the same but on your video it looks quite sluggish - as you mention! Can you confirm which release of W10 you were using?
+kaizenkowboy Thanks very much, glad you found it useful :) You know what I can't actually remember what the build was and unfortunately I had to return the phones as they were review samples - sorry about that!
Great review. Appreciate it. I have a question. Does it allow the normal downloading of Pc compatible softwares on the phone and installed and run like on a normal PC desktop or laptop? Cheers.
just brought the 950 on monday in canada and found out that in the past few days that the phone overheats. This is due to cortana being enabled and that according to the microsoft store and recommended to disable this which would save some battery life. This would also sacrifices the hey cortana and map notification features. Also found out that theres wireless drops, unstable windows native apps, maps not rendering correctly, etc. Will try to get a replacement phone just to see if its the hardware itself. To me if you are spending over 700 dollars Canadian dollars on this phone that you would at least think that microsoft would have the os stable enough to use the essentials of a smart phone. To me, its not worth the price right now and found out today that Amazon Germany Stops Selling the Lumia 950 XL Due to Possible Issue: news.softpedia.com/news/amazon-germany-stops-selling-the-lumia-950-xl-due-to-possible-issue-498058.shtml Also found out that back in October this year Microsoft Pulls Lumia 950 XL Demo Units from Stores Because of Secret Issue - Report: news.softpedia.com/news/microsoft-pulls-lumia-950-xl-demo-units-from-stores-because-of-secret-issue-report-494658.shtml Come on Microsoft you are competing with apple and android. Why would you rush this unfinished product even to the microsoft fans. Other reviewers such as pocketnow reviewed both lumia 950/xl and wanted this lumia device to be good but with all these instabilities of the phone they too also can't justify on buying this phone.
+Ben Reilly that's interesting you're having overheating problems. As I say in my review I found it got warm but far from hot or overheating (although it may be throttling, i didn't test that). Sorry to hear about your phone though, definitely worth changing it. Good luck
Awesome review!! I am still on the fence though. Lumia 950 or HTC M10?? I have the Nokia Lumia 925, and I don't want to let it go...its design is so gorgeous :D
Thanks for that video - great to see a somewhat neutral review. Having been on WP since 7 I kind of feel indoctrinated now - just picked up a 950xl, having gone through the lumias (1520 being the real phablet) on 8.1. Recent os developments have helped smooth out a lot of kinks but it's still not a complete alternative if one is an app or game guru, or used to the optimised feel of iOS. I hate saying that, because I really love it. Each to their own though. And that is a good thing to have - a proper, valid, choice.
Do you have one? I'm considering that Mozo case for the 950 I just bought. It looks amazing, and the fact it's actually a part of the phone and not some snap-on case is brilliant.
Lumia 950 XL definitely was ahead of their time and definitely they were the best I was actually able when I put my 1tb SD card in it gives you an option to run your apps onto the SD card or the built-in storage which I have never seen in any of my phone's so that is so cool and that's not including OneDrive which could allow me to get up to 1tb add external storage for free and that was back in 2016 this phone has super great potential it was definitely ahead of its time probably even still today ahead of its time the Lumia 950 XL reach up just to 1tb external storage you can also increase it up to 2tb with OneDrive which no phone has still has been not able to do That's not including the SD card storage which it can also increase up to 2tb as well very impressive feat for a 2016 phone it definitely surpass even the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and and the OnePlus 7 Pro when it comes down to storage capabilities even surpassing other phones that does have SD card storage that's also when it comes down to storage capabilities definitely Lumia 950 XL was definitely ahead of its time
Impressive review once again from the Tech Chap. :D The lumia 950 and 950xl are still expensive. Maybe I will wait for the HP elite x3 or the surface phone. :D
Please make a new review "the same phone a few months later" about Lumia 950 and let's make it even more interesting; compare two phones with the similar specs and similar date of release. Two phones both of them 1 year old; android and windows phone. Let's see who will be the winer after a year of every day using. Thank you very much. :)
DEVICE: MS Lumia 950xl dual sim (1.5 yrs. in)EVALUATION (overall): Just ok.SPECIFIC: Glitchy, buggy. Store is sparse, & problems with downloading from time to time. Cortana mostly excellent; recently having trouble hearing me. AT&T will run it mostly, BUT NO DIRECTV--- just NOT SUPPORTED. Windows HELLO (iris scanner) to unlock/use mobile has worked all of THREE (3) times for all my time spent trying to get it to work correctly. FEEDBACK HUB: Report problems easily, BUT not sure if MS ever reads it (bummer). Great camera & video. BATTERY LIFE: Not so good, but I use it alot. Recharging cord too short for me @ about 3.5 ft. AUTOMATIC SPEAKERPHONE: EXCELLENT. OUTLOOK OFFICE APPS (comes ready-to-go), LOVE these. LIVE TILES: Great. That's about it.
I personally think that the windows10 should stop using the snapdragon chip and use the mediatek instead cause there aren't much games and apps in the app store and snapdragon isn't really that useful at this point. And the performance would boost up 👆
If it was only about the app gap and plastic built I wouldn't of turned away from this phone. I don't believe in congesting your phone with useless apps, no matter how good the processor and how big the RAM is. It's your phone not your damn PC that you want everything in it. Also I care more about the dimensions of the phones rather than the built material. The plastic used in phones like this and Nexus 6P feels really good in the hand and more importantly it's sleek design makes it very comfortable to use. What is the use of an aluminium or metal body when you can't even swap the battery when you need it? But what turns me away from this phone is its extremely laggy interface. I mean you're selling a phone for $70k, you're supposed to be giving your customers a smooth experience when moving through different apps. How Microsoft has not kept it on par with Android and IOS is beyond me. The time it takes for Spotify to open is ridiculous. You don't expect such lag even from a $25k Android budget phone. Such beautiful Microsoft tiles and live images but such a hollow performance to back it up? Absolutely gutted.
A good balanced review, thanks. I am tempted by this phone due to the excellent camera, as it is supposed to be superior to the Nokia 1020. The app gap bothers me, but I'm more of a pc gamer anyway. i think i just talked myself around to this one - particularly as the price has come down in the uk ☺
+Brandon Dunn Thanks for your thoughts. I did get it as the price at £359 in the UK was just too good to pass on. However, i still have my Sony, so have the best of both worlds. I'm not sure whether I could have a windows phone as my sole daily driver though like i used to when the 1020 first came out. i must say that the shots the 950xl takes are quite spectacular which was one of my main motivating factors.
I like ios, but i am switching to android while wanting to look for dos, too. So, all in all windows is kind of fine, but pepsi can of the left hand side was a bad choice for your health...
Nothing much changed since 930. No fantastic apps. Probably due to lack of developers. I was thinking to spend on the new phone or get a Intel processor i7-4790K, this winter. Guess I made up my mind.
Then download,TubeCast, MyTube, or MetroTube. These are 3rd party RUclips clients that allow you to log into your RUclips account once downloaded. What makes this great is the interface which gives you more features than the official youtube app on Android or iOS. All three apps are outstanding. I personally use TubeCast. It's a Windows 10 Universal app which also syncs to my Windoes 10 PC. You can download video and music in different resolutions strait to the app, play it in the background or cast it to Apple TV, ChromeCast, Roku, or any DLNA enabled TV.
I'm a Win daily user for they hole recent evolution, from 2008/9 and my first introduction to, even then seriously awfull HTC Diamond 2, i hate that OS, buck, i still do and then started with new gen. of devices and win OS with l800, l900, l920, l925, l930, l950Xl ( didn't like the size ) and finally ( present ) i settel with l950..& running on Win insider, release preview OS ( or eraly updates mod. :) ) The problem is ..for all those years my second device is always another platform in hiend package, just cause of three ( 3 ) apps but that giving me the good inside what i prefer and what not and i realized that i just can't switch on childish 2many steps Android or seriously boring ios cause of, read irony, APP GAP :D
I have both phones, and they are junk. I've started out with the first Windows Nokia smart phone which was the most reliable and stable phone I've ever owned. As I kept upgrading over the years, the quality of each new phone was lower than its predecessor. I've had 5 Windows phones so far, and very disappointed with the 950 XL. The phone freezes up when trying yo unlock it. It will randomly shut off when I am surfing the web, with plenty of battery charge. It will reset itself at least once a day. The random freezing and shutting off is the most annoying. I am not getting another Nokia again. Time for an android or an iPhone.
Tried to use it but after few days I have decided to return the device due to lack of apps. Hardware is one of the best but without software it's useless. Top-notch camera but very basic camera app, can't make decent videos. Shame...
something for the apple lovers yea live photos where first discovered by nokia and the first premium nokia phones with windows and now it became popular only because apple anounnced it :P
Just bought the 950XL and it came with free Microsoft dock and keyboard all for only US$225 and I can honestly say it was still a bad purchase! Terrible product in every way!
I have been using my Lumia 950 since August 16 and I love it! Is fast, screen is fantastic and camera is the best you can get!
+Njoi Fontes Cheers Njoi! :) Hope you enjoy your XL!
To each their own, I prefer Android personally, although I'll accept iOS devices a lot more once I can jailbreak them.
I've had my 950XL for a year now and still love it
My 950XL is epic!
Looked at a dozen reviews on the Lumia 950 and 950XL. This is the most balanced assessment of the phone that I found. Great review.
What do you think of Windows Phones? Could the Lumia 950 or 950 XL convince you to jump ship from iOS or Android?
Finally a good WP10 review. Thanks man! Used to have a WP7 before I switch to android and I feel like I was more productive with WP7.
Prices are down now. I just ordered one for £249 with a free Microsoft Display Dock.
That was really well done, thanks for doing...I'm a three year 920 user, but I just got the 640 for $30 and so I'll wait a while for Windows 10 mobile to get up to speed and the price to drop a bit before buying the 950lx.

Thanks! :)
+The Tech Chap TV You can adjust that brightness to the level that Auto brings it to. Go to extras, then click display and click adjust brightness and you will see that the "high" setting isn't all the way up.
this video really helped me. Thanks. i'm going with 950.
I really love the UI of windows phone. it's not perfect and needs a lot of improvement. if the app gap wasn't that big I definitely would have purchased this phone.
I agree 100%

Wait, there is RAW support on both phones, if I'm assuming correctly that DNG is also considered RAW image file
+Altruistic Yes you're quite right, that's my mistake. Thanks for pointing that out :)

+cdb033 Thank you! Yeah it's true, I just wanted to point out that this 'famous' Apple feature also exists on Windows Phones :)
Great video, personally the app gap is not a big issue for me and I found all the apps I used on android, migrated from Lenovo a6000 to Lumia 730 great looking phone with excellent build quality

btw instagram maybe in beta in windows store, but you can try a third party app 6tag for it,it is very good
+mohit khubchandani I still gave it a 'tick' even though it's in beta as it works well, even though as you say there are alternatives.
Since it was marketed to be a phone used for office editing and working in general, I hoped you would have discussed more on that because I really wanted a working phone. But besides that, fantastic review! Keep up this good work!

Any chance you could give another look into 950(xl) performance with the latest W10 builds, so we could see how much improvement (if any) has been done since their release? Keep up the good work!
Yes it's, but better wait until release Red Stone on 02.08.16
The living images was already implemented on Windows Phone *before* iPhone "borrowed" that feature
+Felix Maughan indeed!
Now it's 2020, and I still have my Lumia 950 XL that I bought back in October 2018. It just need a new screen and a new rear camera module, that's it. Everything else works brilliantly well. Even app gap is not my concern since I have all the essential daily app installed in the phone.
I currently use a 950 and I must say that I am satisfied with the performance I get from the machine.
Realistic and honest review.Combo! :)
+Ela Ju Cheers Ela :)
good review!
after so long
+Deovrat Jaiswal thanks!
Please tell me which heat more and faster or make some kind of heating on daily heavy usage like lots of work running in background
I liked your review; I would love to have a newer windows phone..just loved them; why is MS not going forward with them !Tks
Great review. Balanced and accurate. I'm subscribing.
I'm curious though: don't you ever get any blue skies in the UK?😁
+Bob Mwangi Thank you! rarely :p
well done I can't wait to get 950 :)
Cool :)
Great review tom
I have already bought the 950xl. ; and I love it

how is the earpiece of this phone? Is the in-call volume louder than LG V20, HTC ONE M9, Nexus 6P?
Dual sim also :) great review
+nestoavila Oh didn't realise - thanks :)
Awesome video! Also,There is raw support. U can choose it from the camera settings....

+The Tech Chap TV Thanks for replying.
Do all of those three phones have really good cameras?

Hi, today is 10-18-2018 If i purchased this phone today, will it work properly.
also there is an amazing leather and metal mozo case that makes it even more premium than most smartphones

I'm excited to see what the surface phone will be!
950 is selling for 299€ with dock now in Europe on the Microsoft store. XL for 399€.
Louis Mota 950 is only £189 now! XL is £259 as well.

Please make a new review "the same phone a few months later" about Lumia 950 and let's make it even more interesting; compare two phones with the similar specs and similar date of release. Two phones both of them 1 year old; android and windows phone. Let's see who will be the winer after a year of every day using. Thank you very much. :)
Help me out... On the Video Player can you play Next or you have to stop and come back to select a new video to play...
+Kwame Adu I can continue swiping to the next video then press play :)
i thank im get the hawei nexus 6p are lumia 950xl i dont know
I would personally go for the 6p :)
Ok thanks im go with that one
The living image has been a feature long before iphone live photo.
+gfwong79 You're right, Apple just shouted about it more :)
How about an EDIT option for my posts, RUclips? Thanks.
I personally think that the windows10 should stop using the snapdragon chip and use the mediatek instead cause there aren't much games and apps in the app store and snapdragon isn't really that useful at this point. And the performance would boost up 👆
Great review. Thanks.
is this a good phone are the hawei nexus 6p please let me thanks
+Jessica Fisher These are good phones - watch the review heh :P But yeah I'm a big fan of the Nexus 6P as well, I was very impressed by the smaller 5X
Ok thanks
What's an app gap?
I agree, that live tile interface is better than what iOS and Android offer. It will be a shame if Windows Phone gets continued.
I thought the 950 is a hexacore and the XL is octacore
Who is better
lumia 950 or Nexus 5x:))
+Yavor Kovachev Mainly comes down to windows vs android and which you prefer. Personally, I'd opt for the 5X.
Thanks:)
the lumia 950 screen is calibratioin quality
Saya tertarik dengan handphone ini walaupun di Indonesia kurang diminati.
i got Nokia Lumia 930 is it worth to buy Lumia 950 or 950 xl?
I'd done think it's a worthy upgrade -the 930 is still a great phone
Os is not the problem but if my phone can do day to day work I will buy windows phone
Develop some apps I will definitely buy windows phone
I love this phone but its expensive
I am from Myanmar. How can I buy this Lumia phone?
Cool! Not really sure though - Ebay International?
Directly from Microsoft store? Shipping cost is free
It's sold out. Noone could tell me, if to buy any time again.
Amazon? eBay?
950 XL is Octo-Core and 950 is Quad-Core. Otherwise thank you for the review!
Nope. Snapdragon 808 is a hexa core processor not a quad core
I have L730, now I'm thinking to buy Lumia 950. Should I buy it?
Yeah you should while it's at cheaper price
No don't buy! Basically your saying you have pissed your self and now are considering shitting yourself also...its junk!
Ok one question
Will the windows phone release a 5g phone???
Never
Yes Christmas 2020
Nothing much changed since 930. No fantastic apps. Probably due to lack of developers. I was thinking to spend on the new phone or get a Intel processor i7-4790K, this winter. Guess I made up my mind.
Great review! In addition I must say that you are really handsome 😊
I would get the small one
Windows 10 mobile has full featured instagram app
I have a lumia 950 and its the great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a smartphone is useless without youtube
Then download,TubeCast, MyTube, or MetroTube. These are 3rd party RUclips clients that allow you to log into your RUclips account once downloaded. What makes this great is the interface which gives you more features than the official youtube app on Android or iOS. All three apps are outstanding. I personally use TubeCast. It's a Windows 10 Universal app which also syncs to my Windoes 10 PC. You can download video and music in different resolutions strait to the app, play it in the background or cast it to Apple TV, ChromeCast, Roku, or any DLNA enabled TV.
LOL, I never liked the youtube apps, they are quite slow. I always use the browser mobile version
Perfect Tube ! BEST RUclips APP!
Jeffrey Codoy true
So the phones he just reviewed can't have RUclips??
I'm a Win daily user for they hole recent evolution, from 2008/9 and my first introduction to, even then seriously awfull HTC Diamond 2, i hate that OS, buck, i still do and then started with new gen. of devices and win OS with l800, l900, l920, l925, l930, l950Xl ( didn't like the size ) and finally ( present ) i settel with l950..& running on Win insider, release preview OS ( or eraly updates mod. :) )
The problem is ..for all those years my second device is always another platform in hiend package, just cause of three ( 3 ) apps but that giving me the good inside what i prefer and what not and i realized that i just can't switch on childish 2many steps Android or seriously boring ios cause of, read irony, APP GAP :D
I love your eyes ball.color.! 😍
mine heats up a lot and battery lasts like 2 hours lol
Shame...
It doesn't matter how good the hardware or os are if the app store doesn't have most of the apps I need daily it's a no go.
+Liam Ashton absolutely :)
So y its in my recommendation list in 2k19??
Because Windows is coming back by Christmas 2020
Hell no .. windows ain't coming back
Microsoft Windows Dou
it came back and at a very good quality byt uses android

something for the apple lovers yea live photos where first discovered by nokia and the first premium nokia phones with windows and now it became popular only because apple anounnced it :P
+Panoukos A. You're right - Apple simply made it more well known.
Just bought the 950XL and it came with free Microsoft dock and keyboard all for only US$225 and I can honestly say it was still a bad purchase! Terrible product in every way!
Hi, where did you get it for $225? Thank you.
I'm in love.
