+MusicAndCars1 I had a Lumia 1020, It has an awesome camera but it had trouble focusing , It would take too many tries to focus right plus the flash is always on so some reflective places aren't good when the camera requires a focus light to get clear photos,I have an Galaxy S6 and it's better, Just not as great distance with the camera as the 1020 did. The 1020 is great for dark rooms and long distances but not fast focus or reflective areas.
You just tap the screen on where you want to focus. Easy does it. If not, do do it manually and in far distance, zoom in first(as the phone camera is top brand Carl Zeiss) then focus well and zoom out. Not like other phone, The zooming is not software based. It's real hardware based
This is the reason I have subscribed your channel Dave. Very Precise. You answer virtually all questions I have after watching your review. I have subscribed all major Tech reviewers out there but somehow I comeback to your reviews only.
I really don't understand why u have less subscribers though....your reviews are absolutely well detailed ...straight to the point and no bull crap....you seriously deserve more than 3 million subs man....anyways...keep up what you re doing...hope for the best
i gotta say dave, you cover everything in your reviews, things that even the more experienced reviewer leaves out and yo actually test the devices out as more as a consumer than as a tech enthusiast which is the best approach imo. please keep this up as i loooove your reviews!
I really like the fact you talked about "phone relevant" features of the phone. Most reviewers just talk about the screen, camera, battery life...ect. Not the actual features relevant to using the phone as the phone, such as the microphones Sweet job!
I love how your tone always stays respectful to the device regardless of what it is, yet you still give fair reviews. One of least biased reviewers I've seen. Keep it up!
I've been waiting for a good review like this. Well done. I especially love that you're honest with your opinions of the choices made by these manufacturers with their products. I feel like other reviews shy away from being blunt so that they don't lose their connection to review units. I really like how you display the specs at the beginning, and the recap at the end. My only suggestion is to slow down and allow for small pauses between 'sections' or specific topics within the videos.
+Psymon Wolfe Thanks for watching! Ya I try to make my videos short. This one had a ridiculous amount not stuff I wanted to cover hah. Hope it wasn't too fast.
I've been awaiting the release of this device for a long time now. I was deciding on this for an upgrade and I'm glad I found this video. You just saved me $650. I've been patient with Windows since Mobile 5.0 so I guess I can keep doing that. I'll stick with my 1520 for now. Thanks!
Great Video as usual! I appreciate the fact that you came into this review with an open mind & without any preconceived notions about the phones or the ecosystem they're in.
Good review overall, but I'd like to see more insight as to how the os actually feels. I think that that is the most interesting thing for most of us, since microsoft phones aren't really that widespread.
I've watched a zillion 950xl reviews. This one nailed it. I have a 950xl and I think you covered all the issues and summarised it nicely. I would have focused a bit more on some of the nice features of the OS though like the record features on phone calls, skype integration into messages, glance screen, cortana integration etc. Like you say, the whole thing needs to mature, when it does, I think it'll be more compelling that android or iOS
Just a note though. The brightness setting is actually sensible. They are AMOLED screens, infamous for burn ins. It ensures that for the small duration that you are using the screen in sunlight, it will be very visible. However, if using manual control you run it at full blast, you will quickly burn in the UI on to the AMOLED display. And this is not limited to these phones. Any sensible manufacturer who uses AMOLED will ensure that the maximum brightness that the screen is capable is locked away from manual control, and give then access only to a certain brightness level. :)
You pretty much just said what I was thinking. I wanted to get one of these phones, but I decided that the OS needed to mature, and that I should probably wait for the Surface Phone instead.
Dave, I loved windows. If you have any connections in Microsoft, please tell them to start them again, with same software but Android based... Please please if you can.
You're doing a great job, kudos. I have a Priv and hope you do no review as I love it and I would hurt me if someone pointed out the flaws as honestly as you do. No just kidding, great video! Hope to see more! I even watch gaming notebook reviews even if I'll never buy one just because I don't need but high quality videos like yours are just pure fun to watch anyway!
Great review. I love the animations as always. I would make the animation to scale of possible as these phones and sized differently. To those comparing the sizes to the iPhone, you are getting a bigger screen in a smaller, more manageable sized phone. Also, continuum isn't just your apps on a bigger screen, the app changes to suit the bigger size. It's like having your app on an iphone morph into your app on an iPad where there is more use of the bigger screen size.
Well I'm a Microsoft fanboy I must admit, and your review is just the best, it only says the truth and it's hard to find these kind of neutral reviews now, especially about anything Microsoft related.
+AlmightyGTR Very few problems on my 950XL I would say it's very close to my 930 on 8.1 and with another few updates will be as smooth or even slightly quicker.
Windows hello is working just fine and quick! The thing is you need to align your eyes level directly at the iris scanner. A tip is using the reflection from the phone to see your eyes slightly below the phone ear piece.
I was a loyal Windows Phone user for years but sadly they left me...I thought the OS was the best of the 3 OSs at the time and they easily had the best cameras on a phone for years. It was too bad they charged manufacturers a fee for using windows phone when Android was free...I felt that really hampered them as well as getting into the smartphone game so late.
In terms of the brightness of the display: Most Lumia's (if not all...correct me if I'm wrong) have a Display setting under Extras that lets you adjust the brightness profile. By default, the high setting for brightness is about 70% of the max possible brightness. The automatic brightness makes use of it because it isn't "restricted" by the profile settings in that way.
Amazing video. Much more of a realistic review than The Verge & Pocket Now. I'm getting a 950 XL regardless of what anyone reviews because it is a solid phone with nice hardware. Almost all the complaints come from the software, Windows 10 Mobile, and I know over time these bugs and problems will vanish. But I agree, the phones shouldn't have been released with W10M in it's current state...it still feels like a beta.
Go to Settings>Extras>Display>Brightness profile..... then you will be able to adjust your brightness level and there is also a color profile option that let you adjust your screens color.
It would be interesting for someone to go back and review it again after nearly a year of updates. All the reviews I've seen basically say, its good but the OS needs some fixes. Surely the fixes should have been done by now.
Lumia 950XL is now 9500 pesos in Mexico, down from 14999 few months back. This is so tempting, I love the camera tech (Pure View) on this device and just because of that I would get this phone at 9500 pesos
Great review You solved my doubts about the new flagships from Microsoft, I'll wait the new release of Redstone package for Windows 10 Mobile, and waiting to have a solid eco system, at least have few bugs to resolve, against the big ones that it has today!!!!, good luck
This is a good review, man. I am currently a blackberry user and I am very happy with the phone. However, it gets really boring because of the lack of app in the ecosystem. I refuse to get an iPhone not because it is not good. It is just that too many people are carrying one. I am seriously considering getting a windows phone but I think you are right. I should wait for a while for the OS to be more stable. Thanks for the review.
I am an Xperia user, a Z series user eversince I switched to Android from a Blackberry smartphone in 2012. I have always loved what Sony has been offering but I am serious in downgrading from a Z3 to a Lumia 640XL coz the phone is stable enough and performs pretty good! I will upgrade again to a high end WP phone ones the latest OS Windows Phone version is already stable and app gap is smaller. I will miss using Sony and Android though.
Did performance & battery life improve now after the recent updates? really good review dude, good job. Would definitely like to see you reviewing the HP elite x3 when it comes out.
When you set up Windows Hello, don't hold it up straight on. Hold it at the same angle you would as when you use it normally. You may have to hold it closer than normal for the calibration, but angle is what's key. When you power it on, it should unlock without having to hold it up at an abnormal angle or high in the air like in your video. Also less is more. You should only need 3 or 4 calibrations (lighted room, dark room, daylight, and work lighting if it's florescent).
i have the phone now for one week. (Lumia 950 XL) it is absolutely amazing. nothing else compares. continuum is amazing. i bring my work home now and take it back to work. i have zero complains
I still want an XL. Yeah yeah shortcomings but I’m just tired of the big two offerings, circa 2018. I think for my usage case, WP would still be dandy, and unique.
+digital d0m (digitald0m) Would take a Windows phone over IOS or Android any day. I have the 950XL and have no problems apart from one app crashing everything else works perfect and the app gap is not as bad as people think there are many third party apps that work better than the originals.
digital d0m Windows 10 is one OS across phone and PC now. The app store is united. The only difference left to gap is the fact that phones still use ARM and PCs are Intel. Once they get Intel Atom chips in Windows phones there will be litterally no difference between using a Windows PC, phone, or tablet. They will all have 100% exactly the same ecosystem. And for an OS that just surpassed 200 million installs in 5 months I think Windows 10 is going to be a major app platform. So to say Windows phones are a sinking ship is nonsense. Microsoft now just builds one OS, developers publish one app (that can be ported from Android/iOS) and it works and syncs across all their devices.
the "super bright when using auto brightness outdoor" thing, isnt a bug or an error. its a feature just like the samsung flagships have, and it'll only activate under a very bright environment
Very good review, extremely balanced. I am also puzzled why people harp on about apps. I use very few apps. I pretty much only use Chrome, Gmail and FB apps. Even then, the FB app is pants.
4:50 should have mentioned Rudy Huyin apps, even better than the first party ones :) That being said I liked the review but I don't understand why they're not making cool small phones anymore, I still have the first edition Motorola Moto X and loving it, it's a 4,7" display in the size of a 4,5" and when I'll have to change it I don't know where to look.
+AndreCorner Yeah, I'm mostly a hardware fan. If I ever get one of their phones, I will flash a custom ROM to get as stock as possible. Hope you find something nice!
Young Tai Ahn same here but after modding and loading custom roms since my Galaxy S(the first one) I felt I needed a break and got myself the first gen Motorola Moto X for a very interesting price(250€). It's great, never slows down, it's always acting as it should, the only problem is the battery which can last all day with moderate use but drains in few hours with gps/navigation or if you shoot tons of pictures at events. That's not the normal case but after the battery calibrates in some weeks you get from 1 day and something to having 35% at 5pm so if you're going out at night you know it's 2 charges a day. Other than that it's great and I'm not having any problem with it to be honest so I won't change it soon but when I'll do I hope to find the best phone possibile as I don't wanna mod it straight after the purchase. That being said this Xperia looks very good and they talk really well about it but there's an issue, it still costs around 400€ here which is way too much for what I want to spend for a phone even though I make them last years.
This phones today in October 2017 still have some of the most impressive camera hardware and software for a phone of 2015 or even new ones can't touch this Zeiss beast!
watch this with 950 Contiuum on My TV. I do love the contiuum feature very much , didn;t even need to turn my surface pro on for days during this holiday. you could multi tasking is use one thru Contiuum, the other thru the phone screen. But I do wish the snap will be added later.
Continuum is a great and promising feature: M$ just needs to beef up phone's hardware and get more apps and I'm pretty sure: more than 60%-70% of users simply won't need a traditional desktop PC. Good going M$! I am convinced that Apple and Google need more competitors! Now, when I live almost constantly in Xubuntu on desktop I wish there would be more Ubuntu phones popping-up. Xubuntu is just a great OS: so much better than Windows 10 in my opinion! And you can customize it to your liking much better than any Windows distro. And, of course Linux isn't spying on you as M$ and Apple do. Good review! Thumbs up!
thanks Dave for this review, it is spot on! I think WP need to a huge upgrade for the OS and make it very close to pc win! as most of the users, I am one of, looking to be sync with pc easily, editing office files on the move, and a lot of things that you do on laptop but without bothering yourself to carry a laptop! just like Surface that replace laptop, I thought Lumia will replace my laptop but it was a huge disappointment specially with win 8.1. Its better now with win10 but still need maturation as you said.
switching from Android or iOS, noway! as the platform and its UI is different, apps not available, and 3rd party rules also different. Microsoft will be more open for new 3rd party developers but this is too early unfortunately. May be as a second phone along with iPhone or Android, eg for your work sim, this may be a good choice! cheers
Why am I watching this review in 2019?? I still own a Lumia 950... Sad to see MS drop this project - very disappointing. Great review!
Hi I'm from 2024😅
nice review. I didn't know the cameras on these phones were this good. I guess people focus so much on Android and ios and forget windows
+LuneTech My Lumia 1020 still holds up XD that 3 years old now
+SpaceKitty Lucky you! They sold out so quickly where I come from, they're only available online now TT_TT
Still love my 830 though n_n

Please guys help Microsoft to come back
We should support as much as we can for this precious os to survive
I can't believe Microsoft are giving up on phones 🤔
@Papa Larren spoiler: it didn't
@Papa Larren Kind of, but at least on Huawei phones you can manually install APK packages
Your reviews rule! You always put out clean and concise videos of what we really wanna know. Keep it up!
+Mendell Alvarado glad you enjoy them =) Thanks for watching!
I love how consistent your reviews remained troughout the years. Always very professional

don't hate the player hate the game XD
Blame the lag.
+Danny Winget Yo somebody is jealous.... ;) Just kidding ur videos are good tooo..
+Danny Winget hah you're crazy dude. Thanks for the love. =)
***** Are there any major issues with build 10586.36? I'm using 950. Also I shouldn't need to be an insider to get the latest build on 950, right?
i gotta say dave, you cover everything in your reviews, things that even the more experienced reviewer leaves out and yo actually test the devices out as more as a consumer than as a tech enthusiast which is the best approach imo. please keep this up as i loooove your reviews!
2015: "The lumias are not cheap, the 950 costs $550"
2021: boy have i got news for you
I really like the fact you talked about "phone relevant" features of the phone. Most reviewers just talk about the screen, camera, battery life...ect. Not the actual features relevant to using the phone as the phone, such as the microphones
Sweet job!
I also creak when I'm squeezed. Thanks for another great review!
You're reviews are great bro. That's the most non-biased review I've seen on the 950. Thank you so much! 1000 thumbs up! lol
I love how your tone always stays respectful to the device regardless of what it is, yet you still give fair reviews. One of least biased reviewers I've seen. Keep it up!
great video dave! i love how you cover up thing details like the white not staining against the denim and everything. it's really cool!
Dave, just re-watched this video. It really is tremendous work. Impressive skills and polish.
One of, if not the best review out there.
+BirhangZ thanks for watching!
Really nice review liked it ..
great review as always

Very good review style. Informative and great attention to detail. Great job Dave Lee!
Watching this in 2018 and I really wish Windows phone had become a thing instead of the duopoly that is Android and iOS.
Yeah these phones had immense potential. It sucks they let the os die.
Very unbiased. I am getting a Lumia 950. So excited to try continuum. And the camera!
This is the best and only decent review I've seen for these phones, awesome job man!
I was looking at getting the xl but I'll wait for the surface phone now. Thanks man.
Hey Dave!! Can you do a 2018 review of this? with all the updates and stuff?
Johnathan Dalipsingh do u currently use a windows phone. I just ordered a 950
@@tats_n_kats6866 no because all that I have is busted because of age, I own a Lumia 535, 650, but I also owned a Lumia 1520, 920, 900 and 800.
Johnathan Dalipsingh grab a 950 and let’s get everyone using this os again 😎😎
@@tats_n_kats6866 I would if I could bro. I love that phone.
Can I use text now app on the 950xL?

Lumia 950XL is now 9500 pesos in Mexico, down from 14999 few months back. This is so tempting, I love the camera tech (Pure View) on this device and just because of that I would get this phone at 9500 pesos

I don't like this phone. But I like your awesome reviews Dave... So I watched it...
This phones today in October 2017 still have some of the most impressive camera hardware and software for a phone of 2015 or even new ones can't touch this Zeiss beast!
And let's not forget that today's phone camera relies heavily on software.
Great review Dave! Could you do one on the Lenovo Y700 please?
watch this with 950 Contiuum on My TV.
I do love the contiuum feature very much , didn;t even need to turn my surface pro on for days during this holiday. you could multi tasking is use one thru Contiuum, the other thru the phone screen. But I do wish the snap will be added later.
+Alexander Long I want to buy it! just waiting for them to release those updates this month!
May be as a second phone along with iPhone or Android, eg for your work sim, this may be a good choice!
cheers
can't believe his videos were just as amazing 6 years ago haha
