For anyone wondering: "Swale" (April 21, 1981 - June 17, 1984) was an American thoroughbred racehorse. He is best known for winning the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes in 1984. He died eight days after his win in the latter race.
Yeah, because horse racing isn't good for horses. Almost all horses haemorrhage blood from their lungs during and after a race. Broken bones and tendon ruptures mean euthanasia 100% of the time. Most countries still don't limit the amount of whipping during a race, and then after their 2 or 3 year career, they are minced for dog food.
Howard was so ahead of his time, no one talked like that on late night tv. Love or hate him he was real af and did his thing. Radio would just be top 40 countdowns if it wasn’t for him.
@@yletteWell, there is always a way you can not look to "feel superior". Actually, there's always LOTS of ways you can not look to feel superior. Hipsters feel superior for not looking like everybody else, and everybody else feels superior for not looking like hipsters. That HAS to be irony.
Watching these two interact at that time, when they were making their bones on their way up the mountain, is fascinating. It’s amazing to see this knowing the at times cantankerous background between the two titans of broadcasting. They just put the pedal down and go for it, despite what may have been going on behind the scenes.
How priceless is the look on Dave's face when Howard said he talked about his circumcision. I loved Dave's expressions when guests would say something shocking.
At the time this aired, there were four different competing AM-stereo systems in use. WNBC used the Kahn-Hazeltine AM-stereo system at that time. That was the system in which one could take two manually tuned radios and tune each one off center to the left or right to produce a stereo image. A bit of a gimmick which introduces distortion and can produce a poor stereo image. On a proper AM-stereo receiver, results are far better. In addition, every factory car stereo featuring AM-stereo at that time (and into the future) decoded only the Motorola C-QUAM system of AM-stereo. So, even though you bought a new car that is advertised as having an AM-stereo/FM-stereo receiver, and WNBC (as well as other non-C-QUAM stations) are airing promos and liners mentioning "AM-stereo"...you're not going to be hearing them in stereo. Confusing for many who didn't know or care to pay attention that there were different AM-stereo systems in use. Of course, Howard Stern is just being Howard Stern here...

He didn't look cool in 1984, but he actually did look current/contemporary for 1984. That knit shirt, the aviator glasses, the mustache and digital watch. That's all current for 1984. Along time ago, I would drive past Howard on my way to work. He used to broadcast his show from a trailer which was parked next to the Belle Isle bridge in Detroit.
It is super sad what has happened to AM receivers in recent years. AM stations do broadcast a decent fidelity mono signal even today. You just need a proper receiver to hear it. A good AM receiver is very rare these days as almost all of them reproduce telephone quality or worse. (very narrow filters) Some music AM stations even use a method to increase fidelity and frequency response that is similar in concept to what 'Dolby' does for cassette tapes. Good luck finding an AM receiver that can decode it. Just too sad.
Actually, this is after he lost a significant amount of weight. He used to be much heavier. Then, he lost the weight. Then, he shaved the mustache, grew his hair to be long, black & curly, and changed his wardrobe, so that he'd look more like a retired rock star than a substitute teacher. I think the changes came as he started to make more appearances on television.
I really expect anyone, including Howard Stern, to stand up and say, "I'm afraid of being fired." because anyone who says that is cutting his/her own legs from under themselves.
